- The Republican presidential ticket will visit North Carolina on Wednesday to speak about national security, returning to the battleground Tar Heel State as Vice President Kamala Harris rallies Democrats and accepts the party nomination in Chicago this week.
Former President Donald Trump and his running mate, U.S. Sen. JD Vance of Ohio, are set to deliver remarks in Asheboro.
It marks Trump’s second visit to the state in a week, and Vance’s first North Carolina stop since his selection. A prior planned visit was cancelled due to Tropical Storm Debby).
Harris, who set out her economic agenda in Raleigh last week, is in Chicago this week for the Democratic National Convention.
For Trump, the subject of “national security” is likely to focus heavily on immigration through the southern border and America’s place on the global stage.
At a Tuesday event in Michigan, Trump told reporters he was doing well among suburban women.
“I keep the suburbs safe. I stopped low-income towers from rising right alongside of their house. I’m keeping the illegal aliens away from the suburbs.”
The former president has repeatedly gone after Harris and the Biden administration for their handling of immigration policy and international affairs. He has pledged a “mass deportation” operation across the U.S. if elected to a second term, and declared the he would have prevented conflicts in Ukraine and Gaza.
“President Trump and Senator Vance know that America cannot take another four years of weak leadership and a careless approach to our national security,” the campaign said in a news release announcing the Asheboro event.
The Harris-Walz campaign has sought to hone in on Trump’s domestic and economic agenda, highlighting the conservative policy blueprint Project 2025 and arguing that a second Trump term would sow chaos abroad.
Harris will officially accept the Democratic nomination this week in Chicago.

There was over a thousand people seated and several thousand standing behind the media box. Due to a lock of speakers those behind the media box could barely hear or see Trump which sucked. I was there live but I didn't watch it on TV so not sure what media showed.

Local news reported over four thousand people despite this event being announced at the last minute and taking place on a weekday out in the country. Line was over a mile long and took over four hours to get from the back to the metal detectors. People were still coming in at the end of Trumps speech but some people left due to the long wait, no shade, lack of speakers and unable to get a good view of the stage.

I got in right when trump took stage but i couldn't get within 50 yards of him because of the way they had him boxed in and the crowd size. When Trump was on stage the line leading out was still about half as long as when I got there but people started leaving probably realizing he would be done before they could get in. The media box was directly in front of Trump and most of the crowd was stuck behind the media box.

Surely the people in charge of coordinating the police presence/security should have had a National Guard presence there, we just had a summer filled w/ politically charged rioting/violence, and then a very contested/volatile election season and election.
