I can't think of any woman who has the intriguing mix of vulnerability, beauty and underlying fierceness Amanda possesses. Her song writing, singing and playing are beautiful, but I'm utterly fascinated with the complexity of her personality. She's a definite one of a kind.
You are absolutely right in that assessment, Scott. She seems so vulnerable, then so strong and "fierce," as you suggest. In any case, she is a supreme talent, likely better than Jason. But she is also a mother and partner, the strong part. She is complex and one of a kind, as you say.
That fiddle solo in the train song (10:17) is amazing. It ends in a locomotive shriek that she silences by singing the next verse. Crazy good acoustic moment.
Amanda is a wonderful artist Her writing is very interesting, thoughtful and beautiful - her voice has a halting and vulnerable quality that draws you in and is wonderfully fascinating Her albums full of magic and 'when you need a train ...' is a brilliant song
I'm late to the party Jason brought me to Amanda- I just saw him (them) the other night and I became curious about her. I love their story, love him and now.... love her!
Victor Edwards I hear a faint sound of Dolly come out from time to time, but you're right about Melanie. It's been a long time since I even thought of her! Amanda is one of her own though, a new style with I feel a great future. And her with Jason together are magic! :)
@joeyford HAHAA nice catch...i wonder if there are others that listen to great music like this and great hip-hop as well like MF Doom..now i know theres atleast one
I really want to like Amanda Shires, and keep trying. She's a fantastic musician and very good singer. I just don't hear songs when I hear her solo stuff. It's a lot of strumming and singing with no melodies or hooks, and instrumental playing that doesn't advance in any particular direction. When it's over, I can't remember it. I guess I just don't get her.
This is 11 years old. Can't believe I'm just hearing it now (10/23). I find her voice/song writing/fiddle playing to be exquisite!!!

This is about the 10th time to watch, I cant not get enough of Amanda, Jason Isbell is the luckiest man alive.
This woman deserves way more attention. Wonderful sound and talent!

I could listen all day to her voice and inspired fiddle moments!
Such an unusual voice. Love her vibrato with the southern accent. Great artist and songwriter. 😀
I think I could watch and listen to Amanda forever. Such an expressive voice and what a great fiddle player.
Oh wow! Thanks to NPR Tiny Desk Concerts, I have now found another amazing voice to love!
I have never seen Amanda look the same twice. She is always beautiful though.
she really is though eh?
Very talented and beautiful lady. Great whistler! ❤❤
one of a kind! thank you for this music Amanda
Pretty much every album that I've actually paid for in the past year has been an artist I've heard on tiny desk concerts.
I had to watch this 5 times it’s so special
If you enjoy this, you should absolutely look up her performances with her husband Jason Isbell. He is an absolutely incredible singer/songwriter.
Phil Campeau Ditto!!!
Phil Campeau Listening to Jason is how i got here Phil...I concur ~peace & blessings~
I'm late to the party Jason brought me to Amanda- I just saw him (them) the other night and I became curious about her. I love their story, love him and now.... love her!
Gorgeous little concert. Of course, I say this about all NPR Tiny Desks but I really mean it this time.
Her voice sounds so fragile... and her fiddle sounds so fierce!
Neat contrast - hadn’t thought about her that way, but she seems to embody opposites somehow.
oh boy, she whistles? I'm in love. Her and Andrew Bird should make a collab; if they haven't already.
That is Rod Picott with Amada. Both are very talented people.
Victor Edwards Rod is always a pleasure to see -- I rarely miss a chance to see him.
Outstanding. Tiny Desk never disappoints.
"Would you like a song about suicide or love? Alright, we'll do the one about trains." So good.
best train song I ever heard
wow, would not have thought of that but you are 100% correct. The linear "progress" in the melody is undeniable
oui it s love at the first hearing ,,,, j aime beaucoup , album pleeeaase , j achete de suite
Awesome! We were looking for a new artist to listen to. So happy to find Amanda.
Wow .. Definable channeling a bit of Melanie and that’s a compliment .. This lady is awesome
Been on an Amanda binge for months. Am i Wrong ???
Tom Hamby nope. Amanda and Jason binge for... 6 months?
and how about 2yrs hence?
Thanks for highlighting such a great artist.
Fantastic Fiddling and Vocals!!!
love her
Great stuff. Carrying Lightning is an excellent album.
caught that too! i like how versatile NPR can be.
Amanda has the voice of angels...
Loving her music more and more! Would be cool to hear a duet with her and Andrew Bird...
whats not to like about this lady ,she is amazing
If there was ever a angle on earth, here she is
She is channeling Melanie!! Wow! This is new, this is fresh. You go, girl.
Victor Edwards I hear a faint sound of Dolly come out from time to time, but you're right about Melanie. It's been a long time since I even thought of her! Amanda is one of her own though, a new style with I feel a great future. And her with Jason together are magic! :)
Hi Mr. Edwards, forgive my ignorance. I don't know the "Melanie" to whom you refer.
As in "A Brand New Key" Melanie? Sorry if I'm off!
her whistling lol so adorable
LOVE LOVE THIS!
I think I love her.
Her beauty is certainly dynamic :)
so beautiful
Her voice reminds me of Agnes DeMent's. I like her writing too -- I hear she's rocking harder these days, and that's a good thing.
Iris Dement perhaps? Yes i agree. Both endearing singers. Cheers!
It would be great to see her and Andrew Bird have a fiddler / violin player's whistle-off.
That would be incredible.
Should have looked at past comments before I spoke. You are correct, sir. That would be exciting!
Live in Paris and NPR is al you need to survive
Amanda is so good.
She has a beautiful voice. Go check her out with the Highwomen band nowadays
I think I'm in love...😂
Triple like.....This is music.....not like the crap that the suits at Sony and the other big business music corporations crank out!
You had me at "Would you like a song about suicide?!" Awesome voice and presence.
AMAZING
Love it, thank you!
wow!
Wow 😍
Freckles :-)
What is the make of the mic NPR used for this recording. Great stuff
interesting. like her fiddle.
rabismenow Agree - LOVE her fiddle, it's always perfect!
Can I hear the crowd talking in the background at the beginning or am I losing my mind?
thank god im not the only one perving on here .lol
2019
Hot Amanda. Jason, you lucky....d!
Just discovered you, I was missing out
I love the pj harvey album in the bg ;)
Get yourself a man that looks at you like Jason looks at Amanda
@AHopefulRomantic At about 300 views it stops updating for the day. The actual count will show up tomorrow.
I think she is channeling Axl Rose
I want that shirt....
Oh, you clicked :)
What song does she’s start with? Thanks
Ha I like the capo on the ukulele.
Isnt the train song about suicide too?
Isn't that Rod Picott??
DawnVita
Yes
😎👍😎
I adored her before she got too big. Rod Picott is a great song writer.
Got big?
Got. Too. Big? Excuse.
@joeyford HAHAA nice catch...i wonder if there are others that listen to great music like this and great hip-hop as well like MF Doom..now i know theres atleast one
ElmerDurrer
I prefer music rather than hip hop.
now i see what draws me to the blues instead of folk.
Holy balls
Isbell

smart people? how hard are your jobs?
joseworldofwarcraft
There are different types of hard.
I hate seeing Amanda with anyone but Jason
Johnny Cash with a cute face and a ok body. Gotta cut out the whistling though or get someone that can whistle to do it.
Bonniville Black Cherry 🖕
I actually really like this version of “Swimmer”, because of Amanda’s whistling.
Before she got those awful tattoos.
wow!
