  • Here's a complete install video of our new Cape Horn Wind Vane
    capehorn.com/
We probably should have gone over this in the video. We've spent the last two years, researching and looking into pretty much every brand of vane out there. I think our decision boils down to 3 main points.
    1: Aesthetics.
We LOVE how clean and well designed the Cape Horn is. No external lines, no extra pipes and hardware hanging off the back. It just looks GOOD and functions even better. Sure, that means it takes a bit longer to instal, but, you only have to install it once! Each unit is custom made to fit your boat like a well tailored suit. They can adapt them to mount on any transom in almost any position.
    2: No external rudder.
There is a running myth, that if you have a vane with it's own rudder that it can act as a "back up" if your main rudder is ever damaged. But, to us, that logic doesn't hold. Because unless the vane rudder is removed when your main one is damaged, it will most likely get damaged as well. Our rudder has a full skeg, and several is a full foot or two above the keel, so we would have to drift backwards into a cliff in order for it to be damaged. In which case the wind vane would be gone too!
    3: Others reviews.
We've read many blogs, forums, comments, and listened to people talk about their own wind vane experience, and we've heard many people complain about how their wind vane functions. "It's picky", "it only works in certain conditions", "it's hard to adjust or trim properly". Most of the boats we've talked to who have a vane installed never seem to use it, because an electronic pilot is so much "easier". Now, we haven't seen as many Cape Horns out there, but the few people we've talked to, and the many comments we've read about them, not one complaint or trouble with them. That to us may have been the most important factor in our decision. They just seem to WORK! If your sails a well balance and trimmed, the Cape Horn will steer you though anything.
If you enjoyed this episode, please give it thumbs up, it helps us out a bunch :)

I'm surprised you didn't build a wooden donut where the big tube goes through the transom for added strength and peace of mind. Is there not much force on that tube?
Checking with only a 1/4" hole through the transom was genius. Making a wood plug to neck down the hole size on that rotating piece so you could check accurately, priceless. Dude...you have the skills of 1% of the 1%. It's crazy how good you are. Being mechanically inclined is critical to being able to do what you guys do. It's either that or be very wealthy!

Really really love and benefit highly from all of your DIY videos, & DIY moments within regular videos! Because of you, I've got a better drill & have made my first bolt holes in the aluminum of my solar panel rack! Adding a new pair to my 20-year old Siemens panels... And, an oscillating multi-tool for attacking gelcoat stress fractures around the stanchions when the panels are up & running! I wonder how far the ripple effect from your demo videos has gone... We wouldn't be Us without You guys! Much love & gratitude!

Is it weird to comment on something loaded almost five years ago which hasn't had any other comment in two years? I found your channel a few months ago. After watching a couple of recent steps, I rewound the tape and started from the beginning. Since this is my first comment/contact, let me say I watch a fair amount of UA-cam content and your channel is my favorite. Truly. Now for the reason of my comment. Tell me I'm wrong here, but when you were installing the last piece, the cap over the aft end of the shaft, you referenced the thick section goes to port. Said it twice while pointing to starboard then installed it with the thick side to starboard. I read through previous comments to see if anyone else asked about this. Is my perspective off here? Just good natured ribbing if I'm right. In Dan's defense, he was pointing left when he referenced port, but he was facing the stern.

With the combination of the Cape-Horn and Dan's video instructions, one should have zero problems on this installation. These instructions took extra work while doing this installation. so thank you guys. I checked this unit out when you first mentioned it and I compared it to other brands.....I would chose the Cape-Horn unit as well. I really like that you can attach a small inexpensive autopilot control arm to this units servo rudder and use its power to move the main rudder.

Not fair, you made it seem so easy ! With that said, it was worth every drop of our nervous sweat when we cut the huge hole in the transom and installed ours. Like yours, ours has been flawless. The only issue we have ever had is that the top of the tower (the plastic ring) can get loose in really bad chop and start getting pushed up. After consulting with Yves we just retightened and now we keep an eye on it (with a screwdriver by the helm to be able to fix it rapidly if needed). After ~7000 NM we are still in love with it !

Great video, love you tinkering with the boat. Also windvanes are amazing to me, "simple" mechanical self steering without electronics. Only downside, they make the stern look a bit cluttered which I could live with (though your Cape Horn looks quite clean for a windvane install).

Awesome install video and very well explained.
I had one of the first Cap Horns 20 yearsago when Eves was just starting out. I installed it on my Hans Christian 38. It worked great upwind and downwind in all wind strengths. I think my installation might’ve taken four days and I was at a dock. But working up to drilling that first hole in the hull is what took me the longest amount of time.
You can also hook an electric tiller pilot up to it to steer when motoring, but I guess you don’t need that feature.

    • @SailingUma
      @SailingUma  6 років тому +1

Yes, the build up to drilling that hole was definitely the hardest part.

Excellent episode. I installed a windvane just over a year ago (different brand, but exactly the same 'servo rudder' principle). Expensive, but the best upgrade I have even made to the boat. I did a solo 550 mile trip earlier in 2017. I used the windvane all the time, at all points of sail, and it made the trip a real relaxing pleasure. I only steer to park the boat nowadays. Looking forward to seeing it in action.

Stevie FordRanger just watched theirs back to back with this one. Interesting to see the difference -my gut feeling is that although this is a more complex design, it would cope better if you were caught with too much sail up. Id be worried that the boat would round up too easily with the other type. Anyway great vid :-)

Great video. I'm trying to decide which self steering unit to invest in, they are very expensive for what they are so that's why I say "invest in". Your's seems simple enough to operate and install. I'll be very interested in seeing how she works on a long passage and how much fiddle you have to do to get it operating correctly underway! Again, great video!

Dan, I Hate/Love watching you work because of my problems. When you held something over the transom, I was sure you were going to drop it; because I knew I would. That being said I take back the hate because I don't like the word or the feeling. Keep up to good work, I am back sailing (vicariously) through you guys.
