This is exactly what I was looking for to separate my lettuce seedlings! Thank you so much. Now I know a new term: pricking. 😀

Thanks, Lori! I don't have that grow room anymore, unfortunately, but I did start my lettuce in a low tunnel and use the same principle of moving it to a new location.

I separated out my lettuce this year for the first time and it did so well! This was my first year sowing it thickly and separating it out.

Well done. Clever of you to use a mix to make it easier to separate the roots for pricking. Great shot of the lettuce bed in your garden too.

Thanks, it's just coco coir and worm castings, but it's surprisingly fluffy and easy to work with.

Great video! I didn’t understand what the phrase “pricking out” meant until I saw it in action. (I thought it was just the British gardening term for “thinning out”, but this is obviously somewhat different!) Thanks so much for sharing.

Thanks for watching! I hope you find this method useful, I think it's much better than direct sowing or sowing lettuce individually in cells.

This is very helpful, but I wish it included some info about watering & misting.

    Thanks.
I’m curious to know why don’t you just direct seed into the 72 cell tray?

Mainly because of unpredictable germination rates, plus they tend to sprout leggy, so this way when I move them to trays I can get them nice and deep.

I’m so happy I found you! I recently moved back to Romania and I also garden in Transylvania, zone 6”ish”. I’m relearning to garden as all of my gardening experience is from gardening in the desert, gardening here is a bit different. I keep saying that my new garden is on steroids because the growth rate of almost everything in the garden is 10 times higher than what I was used to. The rain here works magic and I love seeing everything explode after a rain. I do organic gardening and I have hard time finding some products here, I have no idea where to look. Can you recommend some trusty websites where I can buy some good quality seeds? Also, I can’t find real vermicompost here. Is it because I don’t know where to look or it’s just because it’s not used here? Btw, I love your blog ❤️ you have priceless information there, keep up the great job.

Aww, thanks so much for appreciating my channel and blog! Welcome back to Romania, gardening here sure is exciting, but can get overwhelming fast if we don't stay on top of weeding :) I don't have great sources for organic seeds, but I did find some success with semintelegumeflori.com and gradinamax.com. I actually order a lot of my seeds from dutchgardenseeds.co.uk, they take about 2 weeks to arrive, and they're high quality.

Oh, and for worm castings, you could try Norofert. I use it, but so far can't really tell if it's that effective. I mostly buy manure and use my own compost. But with the weeds in cow manure, it's a constant struggle...

@@tinygardenhabit Thank you! I’ll look into Norofert and those website for seeds. For now I’m using sheep manure I get for free from the “next door” shepherd and I had to weed a lot last year but this year I mulched heavily with hay and it was a game changer. I rarely weed now and when I do it’s so much less than last year.
