I liked the end story on how you were able to find your dads helmet you remember from years prior. That was interesting to see the progress on the SW helmet from start to near finish.
Sorry about your dad passing before he got the helmet. For those who can not find the donor military helmet, if you look around you can easily find older motorcycle helmets that are close and very cheap, that are fiberglass. They are not exact, but cheap enough. The plastic helmets are more available, but are usually scratched or deep cuts that are hard to get out... but you can often find those for free to about $12... I would not pay much at all for those myself. Trying to find an original military flight helmet is starting to get expensive even for just the shell. I restored a bunch of the flight helmets. I got a few complete sph-3's that I started. I got a shell that was similar but it may have been a single visor, that I want to try and make a master replica with.. I probably have enough electronics to make it a working helmet! Lol. I just need an amber shield. Wonder if Gentex still sells them? Lol
I don’t know where you get your information, but you cannot get prop helmets from the first Star Wars movie, or any Star Wars movie for that matter, for twelve dollars.
@michaelsmulkowski5088 I did. I just sold mine it had the color re done with green and white. I took me around 7 to eight days, and I did the inside head liner with that foam like spongy gray stuff you from a fragile shipping box. It was like a gray soft foam. The helmet I used was a gutted ex airforce flight helmet and the lens was clear but I had a dark one that fit it too. I had 8 helmets that were just the fiberglass shells. I hot two Gentex SPH3 helicopter dual shield helmets that were nearly complete that I am keeping to rebuild with civil aviation communication guts in place of the military electronics. The chin strap was from a bicycle helmet with a chin cup. My helmet after the build minus paint, and some saddle nuts and screws was $27, a little more after the paint and stickers I sold all the shells for $100, and sold my helmet to a girl that goes to those comic con things she lives in Washington state. I'm keeping my two helicopter helmets and they will be completely stock except the microphone and possibly the speakers, and I might replace the single headset plug with a civil duel plug. If you can not find the flight helmet... although I have not had any problems with it.. older motor cycle helmet are every where. I got three now I'm making some display helmets for my hot rod shelf. I paid $2 for all of them and a leather coat from a yard sell.
