  • Oregon State and Washington State have not formalized their schedules just yet, but have made it clear what their plans are. What does that all mean as they look to build rosters in 2024?
    On today's episode of Locked On Pac-12, Spencer McLaughlin also looks at more potential QB movement for current Pac-12 teams. Will one-time starting QB at Arizona Jayden de Laura soon hit the portal and look for a new home?
    Many starting quarterbacks have already decided to enter the transfer portal across College Football. That reality is reflective of another broken element of the greatest sport in the world.

We are on the verge of having two super conferences. Those schools will split off from the NCAA. Ways things are going I don’t see how Big 12 and ACC remain power conferences. Only have two power conferences Big Ten and SEC. If the ACC does survive this realignment it probably be group of 7.

Oregon State also announced Ben Gulbranson as quarterback for Notre dame. He was the final quarterback in the 2022 10 game winning season for the Beavers.

    I don't like the transfer portal in December, either, but there is actually a good reason that it opens in December. The reason is that most schools start a new semester in January. Players transferring need a couple of weeks to pack their bags, leave one school, transfer their credits, and enroll and get settled in a new school. That's the reason for the December portal. It's also probably the reason for the early signing date, though I actually think that the early signing date could and should be moved to August.

    speaking about Oregon St and Washington St's future football schedule, a similar model of what BYU football did for 13 years as a football independent, would/could also work for OSU and WSU for the next couple years. In 2022 BYU even had a schedule where they beat 5 Pac-12 teams and Virginia from the ACC and ended up ranked #13 in the final college football playoff rankings that year. Had BYU not suffered an upset home loss to Boise St then BYU would have been in the top ten and playing in a New Years 6 game. So, could following a similar model to what BYU, also work for Oregon St and Washington St?

  • @stuartmisfeldt3068

    You’re totally right about the CFB schedule. One point though is to start the HS commitments stating after college regular season ends, to allow the coaches to focus on the base rebuild, then the grad portal will be effect as well, for the possible one year placements. Transfer portal for everyone else in late January though February and then again after spring ball is better for keeping interest in the off season.
    The biggest problem, IMO, is the firing and hiring of coaches. The timing of these hires when the season hasn’t finished is driven by recruiting and the transfer portal now. It’s ridiculous that a coach doesn’t finish their season with the team they have a contract with. Don’t get me started on guaranteed money!

    Great response on the Transfer Portal.
    My thoughts:
    Until and unless employment becomes an option and a CBA is on the table, we need to do the following:
    1. Turn the Transfer Portal into an Opt Out, not an Opt In.
    I am so very tired of seeing 1500 "Good Bye" graphics from players. It's become almost required, and is such an inefficient process. Just have everyone automatically be eligible for contact once the Portal Window opens. Have an Opt Out for players that are happy where they are. This would stop a lot of tampering issues out there where you aren't quite sure if someone is in the portal or not.
    2. Move the Transfer Portal window to the day after the natty.
    With everyone entering the portal unless they Opt Out, let's stop having a two-tiered recruiting off season. One for those that make bowl games and one for those that do not. This basically creates an exclusive negotiation rights window for current teams to try to keep their own players until the season is actually over. Talk them into Opting Out.

    Good call on Jayden De Laura. Not sure if he has many options. Barnes from Utah going to a G5 team is basically Oregon St. at this time and would be a catch for the Beaves. He would help them immediately as well.
    I'm guessing Washington being in the Big 10 will be an asset to recruiting the WRs next year. Telling a kid he will get Big 10 exposure is appealing and playing certain top tier Big 10 schools with the new Big 10 west schools which are appealing to play against.

    Think about it, if this season's OSU team was to play what their 2024 schedule is expected to be, they'd likely win 11 games. If Smith had stayed, with Chiles as our QB, Martinez returning, the Beavs are a contender for the 12 team playoff next year. Power 5 or not, who wouldn't want the opportunity to play for a national championship?

    • @baileym4708
      @baileym4708 9 місяців тому +1

      What are you smoking? You understand they won't be able to recruit any talent right? 11 wins? Contenders for the 12 team playoff? Dude. IF they kept Smith and Chiles (they are gone) and Martinez (straying), they still can't replenish those who left as they are not in a Power 5 conference or have an independent reputation like Notre Dame. They are done even if they coach stayed. Dead man (team) walking. You don't know how hard it is to recruit without the Power 5 conference and get money. Corvallis isn't a destination place as well.

    • @mcvapid
      @mcvapid 9 місяців тому

      @@baileym4708 Bro, I completely understand they aren't going to recruit at the P5 level. But, that's not to say they can't out recruit Mountain West schools. The point is, if you can succeed at the Group of Five level, you're gonna get your shot. Even now, you got Liberty in a New Years 6 bowl. When the playoffs expand, a G5 team is getting in, whether it's a Fresno State, Tulane, or App State. Why can't OSU, a school with a leg up on most G5 schools, be dominant enough to be a perennial G5 power for the immediate future? Whether it happens or not, only time will tell. Ultimately, if the Beavs can continue to win, under these circumstances, moving back up to a Power Five Conference in the future, is not out of the question.

    College basketball is now in full swing and I know you are a big college basketball fan, so after beating UCLA and USC so far this year, Gonzaga now has a 16-game win streak over Pac-12 teams with a game at the U of Washington on Saturday. What sort of chance do you give Washington to pull the upset at home against #7 Gonzaga? Also, if Gonzaga beats Washington and extends their Pac-17 win streak to 17, will there be any future Pac-12 teams for Gonzaga to play, or will Gonzaga's Pac-12 win steak be permanently stuck at 17?

    OrSt schedule is clear - 1 FBS, 6 MWC, 5 P4 while on the WSU front I did get the sense they were just going to play their already scheduled G5 games adding more WMC games. Dickert mentioned Liberty as a comparison from this year, suggesting going undefeated gets them into CFP ... not so sure with that schedule. Beavs take is a heavier P4 schedule increases chances doing similar (going undefeated, 1 loss) get them to CFP.
    On TV deal its was my interpretation the P2 are paying MWC for those games where the MWC will leverage their CBS/Fox broadcast for all game either home or away. OrSt will gang up on as many P4 away games to get paydays and leverage those teams Conference Media provider for TV coverage.
    OrSt reported ranked 20th in viewership, 2 behind Oregon at 18th. Cougs were 42nd and Arizona was 71st/last in the Pac12. More eyeballs were on Beavs in 2023. A tough schedule and winning will be required to do it again in 2024.

    Actually ND no longer needs a game for next year. The Bowl people announced that ND was playing Army at Yankee Stadium as part of its Shamrock series. It hasn't been officially announced, but the bowl people let the cat out of the bag to explain how the Sun Bowl snagged ND. (The delay in the ACC announcing its bowls was the Pinstripe Bowl debating whether they wanted ND, because they knew that ND was coming in September against Army.)

    Disagree with the transfer portal moving to January. The are college students wanting to move from one school to another. Most schools with the semester schedule will have already begun the 2nd semester by the end of January. How does a player transfer from Pate State to Spencer U when he can’t even enter the portal until after he has to enroll at his next school?

    In these times, independent status is a losing proposition. If BYU thought it was so great, why did they join the Big 12 conference? Notre Dame is not a good comparison - they have their own stand-alone TV deal with NBC, tremendous alumni support, location in the middle of B1G country, storied reputation, culture, etc. The PAC-12 put a gun to their own head, but the bullet only struck OSU and WSU. That sucks, but going independent is not a solution IMO. Without a soft landing for those two schools, good luck in the portal. Most players in the portal are trying to improve their situation, not going from the frying pan into the fire.

    Given the statement the CFP made about FSU’s schedule, nobody is playing in the playoffs who aren’t B1G or SEC. More spots in the playoffs doesn’t mean the system becomes fair. Just means there is even more reason to rig the system for money.
