- Here is a look at how I make this yellow and green cold process soap. This layered soap also has pencil/mica lines. In this video, I use a tall slab mold that my husband and I made using an E-book by Benjamin and Amanda Aaron. (Link below) This allows me to make 40 Tall & Skinny bars.
Stick around until the end of the video for the “What I Learned” section! Scroll down for recipe and supplies.

Yes, larger batches go through gel phase more readily simply because there is a larger mass of soap creating and retaining heat as saponification progresses! I'm a small-batch hobbyist but I notice the larger my batch (even just a 1000g batch) heats up much more easily than my 400g tester batches. Also, I find it helpful to use a little Crisco or palm oil to stick my silicone liners to the sides of my molds if they start being naughty.
I adore your videos and your teaching, your voice is calming, and your soaps are SO beautiful!! They're so inspiring to look at, and your process is so clean and soothing. When I soap, it looks like a bomb went off. Can't wait to continue seeing more and more amazing creations :)
Thank you for the info, Stephanie! Good to know! I will try that trick with my mold next time. Thank you for responding to my question!
Thank you for your kind words about my videos. Lol, did you see that I made a mess with the middle layer too?
@@TreeMarieSoapworks No problem at all!! Oh girl, you should have seen the mess I made of the soap I did this morning. I almost knocked half the batter on the floor, and did not wait even remotely long enough between layers. Mica lines are not for the impatient - and I am VERY impatient. It's gonna look like a hot mess XD I definitely feel the struggle!! As long as it makes it into the mold MOSTLY I'd say it's a success lol
I'm totally addicted to your videos! Hands down the best soap technique tutorials on UA-cam. Keep up the great work! 💚
Aww...thank you so much, Crystal! 💚💕💛
Great tip about the Mica oxide and neons.
Thank you, Audra! 💛❣💚
Love, love your videos!! When I started making soap several years ago, I spent hours looking for information & making spreadsheets trying to learn/understand the process. Your videos are so detailed! Your explanations and your “what I learned” section are wonderful . Like your spoon! What a great idea!! Thank you!!!!!
Aww...I appreciate this! Good to know! Thank you! 😘💕
I have to say you have the most elegant Soaps on UA-cam.
Wow, that's a very high compliment! Thank you so much! 💕🌼💕
I love how thorough you are☺️ Beautiful work!
Thank you so much! 😘💕
BRILLIANT idea to keep smaller amounts of each oil in a smaller container for topping up just at the end when approaching nearly enough of your target of oil weight! Thanks! Never thought if it, despite HATING fighting with gallon jugs FOREVER! And having tried a bunch of different things. Including one fluid ounce pump dispensers, but they just weren't quite the thing. 10Q again. BRILLIANT idea! Forest and trees, again.
I am so glad you are learning little tricks! 🌳💕
I used your technique to mix colorants and it works great to insure all the colorant is mixed. Thanks for sharing that.
Good you know Bee! Thank you! 💝
Amazing. Congratulations! Also your UA-cam skills and self confidence have increased, it's all very professional.
I appreciate your opinion; thank you so much, Adrian! 👍
You spend so much time patching up the little holes at the end it's so charming a true artist
Lol! I can't help it. 😊💝💕
Thank you for watching, liking, subscribing, and sharing! 💕🌳

Ahh! You have a site! Looks beautiful
I would like to buy this soap recipe. I looked for it in the shop, but I couldn’t find it…
YAYYY!!! You’re back! Missed your videos~~~ and what a beautiful bar and color scheme!
Aww...I hope to produce more videos now that the kids are back in school. Good to know that I was missed! 😘💕💖
Thank you so much. I come back to you time and again for inspiration and education as a new soaper. Your detail has always impressed me.
Aww...thank you so much, Michele! 😊
Thank you 😊. This soap is beautiful & thank you again for sharing this tip about colure.
Also, so cool you are making larger slabs! I think in the lot swirls and drop swirls always turn out better in big slabs. I think it’s because the added space allows for more turbulence in the pour. Can’t wait to see what you create!
Thank you, Kelley! I can't wait either!
These are just beautiful, crisp, clean and refreshing looking! I also love love love Wasabi FO!! Can't get it any more - so very sad about that. It was one of my top favorites! I bought it hesitantly, but, oh my! Wah! Thanks for another great video.
Yes, Wasabi was the best! It was so fresh and wonderful. I did get one last pound of it before it was gone. 💚
I like all of your little neat tricks and ideas! I have a bad wrist too so thanks for that tip!
You are so welcome!
I love your soap and I dearly love that fragrance oil too! It just reminds me of a walk in the woods-crisp and green! Thank you for the tip about using a bent spoon. I really struggle with the spatula method, so I am excited to try that out.
Oh, yeah, I just love that fragrance! So glad you are learning! 💚💛💚
So happy to see you are back, have missed you..very pretty soap
Thank you, Gretchen! Good to know I was missed. 😘💕
Your colors are AMAZING! Thank you so much for creating & sharing your Colorant Calculator. That’s incredibly generous of you. I always learn so much about custom blending colorants from people like yourself who have a background in the arts 😊
Thank you so much! I love experimenting with color and the colorant calculator makes it so much easier. Stay tuned! 💕🎨💕
I agree about not trying to get every last bit of soap once you go beyond a light trace or have a beautiful swirl or marble effect and want a flat top. And I always like to have a little "me soap'. Your soap colors are gorgeous. Will definitely check out the color calculator.
Yes, so true! Thank you so much! I hope find the colorant calculator useful. Let me know if you have any question. 😘💕
Beautiful soap! And such a soothing voice.
Thank you so much! 💕
These are very nice, I love the Colors!
Thank you so much! Hey, I saved you a bar from the Taiwan Circling Swirl Variation video. It's white, purple, and white. Do you still want it?
@@TreeMarieSoapworks sure, do you except visa?
Amazing! I started soap making about 3 months ago and I just bought a tall mold for 8 bars. I'm going to have to research on calculations for this Wasabi soap, I love
Wonderful! I use 26.8 oz oils for my 8" Tall & Skinny mold, and use a 25% "water as a percentage of oil weight" in soapcalc.net
Wow! You are so talented!😍 I love how you mix your colors! The soap turned out beautiful! Love the color choices!❤️ Congratulations on the website!!
Thank you so much! 😘💕
Your soaps are so beautiful! Your vids are so satisfying to watch.
Thank you so much! 💚
I love how you do soap like it art ! Youre amazing
I love the narration, very informative.
I'm so glad, thank you!
💖💞Really pretty and bold colors. Love that design!
Thank you so much! 💝💕
Love all the soaps you created😍
Thank you, Aaries! 😘💕
A loud HI from Croatia, we are on vacation and I just watched your new video! Congratulations to your website, I‘m going to check it out immediately! Thanks for sharing all the tricks and the making of your beautiful soap! Best regards, Diane
Hi, Diane! Have a wonderful time! Thank you! 😊
Hi my dear friend and teacher
Me and my family were so happy to find the notification of you tube for your new video, we missed you soooooo much❤.
Your soap was amazing 👍❤🌹we wish you all the success in your life 🌸
Thank you, Rawa! Hello to your family. 😊💕
These bars turned out so lovely 💕
Thank you so much for saying so! 😊
As always awesome video. Love your tips. Inspiring.
Aww...thank you so much, Allyson!
That is a great looking bar
Thank you so much! 💚❣💛
If you bend the spoon the other way, then it will be less likely to introduce bubbles, because the soap won't hit the spoon and go up its sides, but rather flow over it, breaking the fall more smoothly.
True! Thank you so much!
Very informative
I really really love your Chanel
Thank you so much! 💕
Love the narration!
I appreciate that; it's a lot of work, but so worth it. Glad you are finding it useful. 💟🌼💟
Beautiful soap!
Thank you so much Shannon!
Very nice and I have smelled the wasabi, it's a wonderful fragrance.
Is't it great! Thank you Renee! 💝
Great video. I use a 40 bar mold and never put it in the oven. Yes get a wire cutter. I got one on Etsy and one from Workshop Heritage.
Love this bar!
Thanks so much Kim! 😊
What lovely soap! Also, I really like your video style
Thank you so much! 💛💕💚
Woohoo! I've been wondering when you'd have a chance to post again...:) It looks gorgeous.
Hello There! Good to hear from you! I am hoping to post a little more often now that the kids are back in school. Thank you! 😊
THIS IS AMAZING 😍
💚💛💚💛
Thank you so much! 😘💕
I feel as though whenever I see one of these beautiful soaps (on this channel and other places like gift shops), I want to buy them, but then I wonder how I would ever use it because it's too beautiful.
Amazing work, this batch turned out wonderful!!
Aww...they are so fun to use. I usually tell people to buy 2 and use one. I think you will fall in love with it! 💗
So fantastic!
Thank you so much!
These are beautiful! 😍😍😍
Thank you so much! 😘💕
Your soaps are beautiful :)
Thank you!
Thanks for the tutorial.
You're very welcome! 💚💛💚
Thank you. Your videos are very informative and helpful! I am a hobbiest, and enjoy trying new techniques. Love the tip about mixing with the micas! And such a bummer that BB discontinued their Wasabi FO, I too liked the freshness of it. Hope we can find a substitute. Keep up the great work:-)
Hi Barb, I think Green Fig is similar, but not as pleasing to me. Thank you! 😉💚
Amazing video once again
Thank you so much! 💚
Thank you for sharing
You're welcome! 💗
Gorgeous
Thank you so much! 💚💛💚
I think it would be great if you also made videos with your husband of how to make the molds!!
Lol! I don't think he would want to be in my videos. 🤭💕
My bigger batches do gel easier, yes. On your mold flopping a bit.....try smearing a little of the palm oil on the sides (inside) and press the silicone against it. Love this one!
Thank you for answering my question Sherry, and thanks for the great tip! I am going to try that next time. 💚💛💚
Green my favorite color ) I like these , very uncomplicated basic n simple n sophisticated like Japanese style , I Love ! Also the Green n Back combo n the Yellow n Black combo too .
Wow Wasabi ? I cant imagine the smell , I do required it with my vegan Sushi . Does it have a tingling affect like Peppermint ?
My favorite color is Green too, Nanette! I love Japanese style as well! The wasabi is just the fragrance oil that I added. It smells so green and fresh, not like cut weeds or grass. I am not a fan of those scents. 💚
You have me intrigued with the scent more Maybe BrambleBerry will bring the Wasabi back . I really want a Natural scent of it though .
I call my Sons Cat Wasabi " sometimes when He was acting spicy ' | wlld . His name had a similar sound effect 💚
This is so perfect! I like how the black line makes it look like a drawing. I wonder if its possible to get that black line around the perimeter of each bar. Then it could look like a drawing of a bar of soap.
Thank you! That would be great to try a mica/alcohol spray before cutting. I what to cover that in future videos. Great idea!
Perfect
Thank you, Melanie! 😘💕
I was wondering where you got your small tools for filling in where the air bubbles were? Thanks for the video 🥰 I love learning from you!
If you are referring to the palette knife, here is the closest one I could find. www.amazon.com/dp/B004O7CFT4/?coliid=I3CGDMQODBIK01&colid=186158P92HKGJ&psc=0&ref_=lv_ov_lig_dp_itcrid=W0CTWBOHGF0N&keywords=anchor+hocking+batter+bowl&qid=1552845540&s=gateway&sprefix=anchor+hocking+batter%2Caps%2C196&sr=8-1-spons&psc=1
Love your videos ♥️ just a quick question which soap do you use to cut the big loaf before the bars ?
I used my wire cutter, but I have recently purchased a log splitter form www.workshopheritage.com/collections/soap-cutters
I'm curious, I see other soap maker's end up with bars that seem to have a lot of white specs in them. Are those air bubbles, unmixed ingredients, etc.? Yours seem to have far fewer white specs/spots/bubbles, which makes your colors look more consistent and vibrant. How do you do it? (is it thoroughly mixing your colorants with oil first?)
It could be air bubbles, stearic spots, or unmixed ingredients. I talk about how to get a smooth looking soap in these two videos.

Also, when you force gel, just to clarify, you turn the oven off right when you pop your soap in and leave the soap in overnight? This is such a cool idea! Thinking I should have skipped on buying that heating pad 🤦🏻♀️ could have been using the oven!
Yes, turn it off right away. Over preheat for 30 seconds or so. This is to warm up the air that surrounds the batch. I do prefer using the oven.
let me say that I am not a soap maker HOWEVER I love watching soap videos
I wanted to know about that silicon rash thing too. BTW: I was using a freezer paper liner. I got that when I did a oven gel and I thought that was why it happened so I never oven gelled my soap since. Can you elaborate a bit more on why this happens?
For splitting your batch and working with layers, am I understanding this correctly that you would take the mold’s capacity and divide it by however many times you want to split the batch into (ie: 16oz capacity divided by 4 would equal 4oz mini batches of soap) that you then run through soapcalc with your oil percentages to find out the amount of water and lye for those mini batches and then proceed with your design? Is there an easier and more accurate way to calculate what you would need to do if you want to work with one layer at a time, especially if you have a fickle fragrance oil? If you have a video on this I’d love the link. Thanks!
Create the entire batch and divide by four....then take your total fragrance and divide by four.
Hi teri am gonna try to make your soap bcs I admire it but am wondering at what degree do you mix your oils and lye solution ?
And what you do if they cooled more than they supposed to while you are making the 1st layer ?
Thank you in advance
I like my temps to be between 85-95 degrees F. For a layer soap, I would try for 95 to start with. I use clay and a fragrance oil that has a slight acceleration to help the layers set up more quickly. That way there is usually only about 15 minutes between pours. I don't worry about the temps. I just cover my oils and lye in between use.
Thank you so much you are such a good inspiration
what is the block you put your soaps on to cut them? I kind of want something like that to cut my soaps, but I'm having difficulty find one similar to yours...
We made ours, but it was roughly based on this one. Hope this helps.
global.rakuten.com/en/store/cafe-de-savon/item/f3081202/?s-id=borderless_browsehist_en
I noticed you didn’t clean the AC off of the silicone liner side walls. So my question is how come we aren’t seeing the residue on the sides of the cut bars?🤔🤔
For how long I need to wait before pouring the next layer
Wait until the soap sets up enough so that the next color can be added without breaking through the layer below.
Hello, may i ask why did you add kaolin clay? Is there any specific function adding it in the soap making process? Thx b4..
Kaolin clay firms up the layer quickly. Also it helps with the lather.
@@TreeMarieSoapworks thank you for the info! 😊 I'll try this in the next batch!
Do you had the kaolin to help fix the fo? If not, what is it’s purpose ?
I usually use it in layer soaps to help it set a bit faster. I probably didn't need it for this one since the Wasabi FO accelerates. It helps with lather too. I find that it helps whites become whiter. It is not great with swirls because it absorbs moisture and causes acceleration.
I tried one of your tutorial, and tried making one. I used coconut oil, but instead of lather, it is just sticky and has a weird oily slippery wax like texture when rubbed on hand. What did I do wrong? Did I put something more of?
My recipes turn out as you see them, never oily. Maybe if you give me a little more information, I can help you trouble shoot.
Sometimes when people cut soap they get little white bubbles almost on each slice. How do you keep your soaps from getting that bubbly surface and keep them looking so clean?
Hope what I'm asking makes sense
tigerlilley Not teri, but I get bubbles if I forget to ”burp” or tap my stick blender inside the soap mixture before I start to blend :-)
Yes, it makes sense. Most of the time it's from air bubbles because of the stick blender not being burped like @tellervo said. Sometimes it is due to fragrance. Sometimes it is just blamed on the wire cutter. I find that waiting 48 hours before cutting works well. If you have those problems when cutting with a wire, a knife usually works nicely to "smear" those spots and they don't appear.
Why do you avoid heating your cocoa butter too much?
When working with cocoa butter and shea butter I try to keep the temps between 85 and 95 degrees. I learned about chocolate and that you get "fat bloom," a white film that develops when you don't temper chocolate right. I don't know if it has anything to do with it, but I think that film looks a lot like soda ash. The "magical temperature" for tempering chocolate is 93 degrees Fahrenheit. I try not to get my temps. too much above that. On the other side of things, I started soaping at room temperature and was getting stearic spots, so I don't soap at room temperature anymore. The ideal temperature for me is 85-95 degrees. Hope that makes sense. 😊
@@TreeMarieSoapworks Thanks for the info! Do you heat cocoa butter in the microwave? That's what I do and I find it takes longer to melt than the coconut oil. I think I may melt them separately now so I can monitor them better. Thanks again.
Why do you place the ruler at an angle?
If I need to divide my loaf by 10 and the loaf is slightly smaller than 10 inches, I slant my ruler and put the 0 on the edge and the 10 on the other edge and mark on the inch lines. I get 10 equal bars. 💚😊
Will this soap be available in your shop?
There are not quite cured yet, Dustin. They will be in a few weeks.
Yes, bigger batches do gel easier. If you look at Ravensongs Soap on Instagram, her huge slabs always gel with no applied heat. Less surface area/volume ratio means more heat retention. 😀
As always, love you new video! I so thrilled you have a website, too!! I’ve got to come down and visit you sometime soon!
Thank you, Kelley! I suspected as much! Hope you are like your job. It would be great to get together some time. 😊
first!
