Thanks 4 giving my pops (Howard Davis) props on his hands. Til this day Mayweather Jr. is the only one I see with that kind of hand speed. My Bro Dyah Davis is a hot prospect now training under Mayweather Sr. in Vegas now. Same speed as pops with a lot more kick, He's fighting at 178-180 Light-Heavy weight.
McGirt was something back in the day. Very good feints and evasive head movement, unorthodox style, but very effective. Had a head like the Queen Alien's though.
Howard Davis is my father... and you are right it was a big issue with training and management which really hurt his career. He is still an Olmypic gold medalist. He took most of his title fights at short notice, that seemed to be the way the business was conditioned back then...it was to keep certain fighters from getting that fair chance at winning titles. My Brother, Dyah Ali Davis is boxing Pro now out of Las Vegas. His record is 14-1 lose by decision. He's sparred with a lot of 2days greats.
Growing up I big fan of your father. In his prime. I always felt he had his prime robbed from him by being the most ducked fighter in his day. Devin Haney reminds me a lot of him. Rest In Peace.
I remember Davis growing up watching his fights. He would have been world champion but Edwin Rosario threw that desperate Haymarket and Edwin got a lucky decision. But back then Ray Leonard and Howard Davis both had everything in common except one thing many people then said about Davis. Leonard at times was a killer when he had to be. Davis wasn't. Davis had gifted hand speed. Foot speed. High IQ. And good power. But like some people in boxing say about him in those days " If I was as talented as Davis I would be sending people to the hospital or humiliate them so they never come back. Davis didn't seem like that kind of person in the ring. Davis was a Boxer, not a savage.
Howard Davis is from Glen Cove but resided in Hempstead,NY since the Olmypics, he now works with American Top Team training extreme fighters the technique of boxing.
Howie and I were Sub-Novices together in the '73 Golden Gloves. Never got to fight him in the ring, but had a couple rounds in the gym in Huntington with him. I was fast, but he was FAAAAAAAAAAAST! Nice kid, class act. Best of Long Island!
Hey Carlos, I remember you. I was there at the Garden with the Huntington AC (Gerry Cooney, et al.). Howie was always the one to beat since before the Prelims, but you made him work.
My Brother Dyah has a fight next week on the 8th of July Vs.Dante Craig. Dyah also has a site on Myspace...No footage yet but he will soon we are putting something together for UA-cam and for his Myspace.
Actually, the last 15 round fight was the following week in Mexico when Jorge Paez beat Calvin Grove for the IBF Featherweight title via 15 rd majority decision. The date was 8.04.88
the last 15 round fight was Jorge Paez vs Calvin Grove in mexicali Mexico Paez was trailing on all cards going into 15th round and knocked down Grove 3 times to win close decision with 10-6 round on all cards
it just wasnt meant to be for davis he had quite a few chances to be a champ but just couldnt get over the hump . but just think he beat thomas hearns, hilmer kenty, and aaron pryor all in the same olympic trails. great amateur. but as a pro a good contender
Howard had no business taking this fight on short notice. Some more preparation, and he would've put in a better effort.Arguably the fastest fighter in his day.
@@joeygonzo He was at that point in his career where that was the weight class he was in. Granted, if his career had went like it should of, He would definitely have pulled a world belt there.
Dyahs my brother....Howard Davis is our father. We just got back from Puerto Rico late last month. We were in San Juan helping Edison Miranda prep for Arthur Abraham. Dyah is now under Mayweather Sr. in Vegas. I was born in Glen Cove. I use to live in the projects out there also. Check Dyah's myspace 4 his fight info.
He also beat Aaron Pryor in the tryouts to make the 76'Olympic Team. Look out for my Brother LightH/ Dyah "ALI" Davis-Myspace-. He has a lot of my Fathers skills, but he has KO power to stop a fight. His last fight he won 1 min. into the 1ST rd. I talked to my Father yesterday he told me that he was collecting some more of his fights to create a highlight reel. I have all of his Olmypic fights on tape they have to be converted from VCR 2 Disc. When I went 2 PR,they all said my pops beat Rosario.
Howard's problem was his trainers. They wanted him to be the next Ali. Howard would never commit and therefore by not commiting yourself to the fight(Never Trying To Get Hit) When the time came and he did get hit he wasn't condition for it. Believe it or not folks you must get hit inorder to grow as a fighter the time will come when you get hit alot or take a solid shot if you never had to deal with that you'll fall flat on your face when hit. Just ask that track star Roy Jones Jr
The last scheduled 15-round fight? I always thought the last 15-round fight ever was between Evander Holyfield and Dwight Muhammad Qawi (nee Braxton) for the WBA Crusierweight Title.
The man calling the fight is the late Don Chevrier, who was a well known sports broadcaster in Canada. It sounds like Alex Wallau is doing the color commentary.
It happened after Duk-Koo Kim died of brain injuries in his fight with Ray Mancini. This fight was for the WBA Lightweight title. This was in the early 80's. The WBC continued with 15 round fights. They shortened them from 15 to 12 rounds for safety. The WBC soon followed the WBA. 15 round fights were pretty much done with around 1987, 1988. Around that time.
@@Belburg From personal experience, absolutely; kid had a jab from outer space. You'd swear it came from outta orbit. And like trying to hit a jackrabbit.
buddy mcgirt was one of the most underrated champions in the last 30 years.he also beat a great champion at the time in simon brown.
Feels weird watching this while having Buddy sit next to me and him not knowing I'm watching it lol
RIP Howard Davis.

Thanks for posting this...
the last 15 round scheduled fight in the usa was vinny pazienza vs dan sherry in 1993 !!
Howard was one of my all-time faves.
Was Howard Davis Jr's deveolpment held back by Howard Davis, Sr?
Oh you said in the US but I was responding to the title, I wonder what was the last one to actually last 15 rounds.

yes. that was the last of the 15rd in the US.
I believe that Paez fight was in Mexicali, Mexico.

No I found out it wasn't true there was a fight with Jorge Paez and Calvin Grove a month after this.
That isn't true, is this really the last scheduled 15 round fight ever?

I think you hit Howie on the button. FAST fighter but played safe. That generally doesn't make a champion and it certainly doesn't make another Ali!
Yes,fastest hands I have ever seen.

Holyfield vs ibeabuchi
Wow they were just talking about Davis Jr's chin problem and then BLAM! Who were the commentators? Props to them they were right on the money!

Two Long Islanders.
los 2 peleaban con la guardia toda baja, algo tenìa que pasar
I loved Howard. I always felf he was the best boxer on the 76 team. Just not toooo gooood as a pro.
I was at this fight I was probably was 10 years old.
Aaron Pryor used to beat the shit out Howard Davis in sparring sessions.
Wow. Spoken like a true 18 yr. old boy. Show some respect, son.
Davis ultimate divide between his amateur and pro selves

I hated that Howard had to lose to Jim Watt.If the Rosario fight was a 15 rounder, Howard would've beaten Edwin.
Howard would've beaten Edwin if the fight was 4 seconds shorter!
