  • www.tedxlausanne.org. Shane is a REconomist, entrepreneur, environmentalist and dreamer. He left the UK at 17 to discover the world, without money, direction or date of return -- just a fascination for big questions like "is a better world possible?" 20 years later, his current work with the Transition Network's REconomy Project (www.reconomy.org) exposes him to the rise of the new economy and a possible answer.
In his talk, Shane explores the rise of seemingly unrelated new economic trends that are global enough in scale and are evolving at such a rate that they could trigger a positive economic systemic shift. Cooperatives provide 100 million jobs worldwide, 20% more than multinational enterprises. Online collaboration techniques (open source and peer-to-peer systems) -- are spreading. Niche groups experimenting with cooperation-based economics are outperforming competition-based enterprises.
At a time when mainstream confidence in the old economy is at a low Shane provides hope in a plausible and positive vision of the future based on present and credible economic trends.
In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations).

Utterly brilliant. Ties together many intetesting concepts in the most legible form I have encountered anywhere. Will definitely watch again.

HI Joel, the simple answer is, yes. things like participatory budgeting, placemaking, creative commons on plans and drawings, collective building, asset transfer, permaculture design at a planning level, localism (type devolution) and many many other forms are all dissolving the old ways of doing, these new ways are such that we the community are increasingly becoming producers and creators of our own communities rather than just consumers...

@@bouipozz for a revolution to be succesful, you need new institutions to replace the old when the dust settles anyway, otherwise the tendency is for a system similar to the old one to regain power. Economic democracy is the most important kind, although governments can curb its power by creating laws to prevent certain kinds of activity so its important to fight on all fronts

5:17 I never have seen a better explanation of the main differences of the old industrial economy and the new information economy and why networks and collaboration/sharing are such important elements in the new economy.

This idea often gets confused for "sharing". Not quite sharing - there are still owners- winners and losers.

+Miketar2424 Question:Did you choose to be born or did your parents "share" it to you? Do your parents still "own" you? Why do we think we have to "own" everything? so frustrating

Thank you for sharing these great ideas.
I'm an architecture student, do you think this new model is changing/will change how we create our buildings? There are some community focused practices out there but they seem to be few and far between. Architecture is certainly advancing towards sustainable design but I fear it is very technology focused, which justifies buildings as 'sustainable' but doesn't address social factors and is still deeply embedded in the corporate model.

I agree with Shane that the p2p/information economy is displacing the industrial/institutional model, and I agree that it doesn't matter unless it facilitates sustainable practice. However, there is also a worldwide renaissance of genuine community as the appropriate economic base for sustainable practice. This kind of reconomy works because local empowerment is key, and p2p economic activity also facilitates this transformation. For more info visit reconomy dot net.

Sorry that's probably a bit ambiguous.
I guess I'm trying to say, with your alternate model, can communities take control of their own built environments rather than them being at the mercy of developers as they are now? And combined with sustainable design, will this present a more sustainable development model for the built environment because it speaks for the community it serves, rather than the predominantly profit/incentive driven centralised powers of development?

Private property is not abolished but is redefined as to what "private" means. The criteria to do this is a "dependency test". If you own a private business that provides a product or service in a community where the community becomes dependent upon that product or service and without which would upset the balance of this community, the business would need to become a democratically operated public affair. Any time you sell something to someone that becomes dependent on you for that transaction, this is not a private affair but a public affair. Hence in this circumstance, your business becomes a cooperative thus ensuring that personal whim and fancy don't screw the people out of their required goods and services. Now, if you keep your business just under this radar, you can be as private as you please. The gist here is the smaller your foot print in the public, the more private you can be. Most all family owned and operated businesses are of this caliber (mom and pop) and is why they are small and operate privately. Capitalism works if it's "scale" is kept small. However, once it scales out and into public dependencies, it should be slated for conversion to a cooperative. Socialism and its foundation in democracy doesn't discount capitalism, it just makes sure it doesn't get too big for its britches. 🙂. The same dependency test can also be used successfully with "intellectual property" and patents.

Another model that involves money. "Sharing economy" can be another exploitative economy Many have to work several jobs in this economy to make enough to survive.
Not relying on your tax money, money from government funded charity organization and money donation from people is the real sustainable movement: unlike some of these models under "sharing economy" that rent something in exchange for your money is just another profitable form of capitalism in disguise. Do some research on who they took from to start their company.

He says capitalism and hierarchies are ok and then talk about climate change and local transition towns... really? He seriously doesn't see the connection between the structure of organizations and the problems we face today?

+Nelson Guedes Just out of interest, what exactly is the connection between the structure of organizations and the problems we face today? I'm asking as I'm currently writing an essay on this and am looking for all the help I can get haha.

    • @NelsonGuedes

+Adam Lord sorry I missed your message. Wow, a whole book can be written about it. From a functional level, the uneven distribution of power in governments and corporations prevent the free flow of information which is required to make effective decisions based on accurate data. Then there is the social-economic competition which those hierarchical systems create, which decreases trust and increases the level of conflict within and between organizations, thus slowing down and often impeding progress. From an economic point of view, the hierarchical structure tends to favour those higher up the organizational chain because those people possess the power to determine the distribution of wealth in the organization, thus those higher up tend to game the systems in their favour. The power structure within organizations then is mirrored in the larger society. The internal economic hierarchies, from schools to corporations, replicate, and are a reflection of, the external reality of social hierarchies.
