ABOUT this song:
"If" is a song written by American singer-songwriter David Gates in 1971. Originally popularized by his group Bread, the song charted at number four on the Billboard Hot 100 when released as a single in 1971. The song also spent three weeks at number one on the Easy Listening chart.
It was quickly covered by other singers (including Shirley Bassey, Petula Clark, Cleo Laine, Frank Sinatra, Jack Jones, Perry Como , Telly Savalas, Westlife and Frankmusik).

Shirley is the best pop vocal musician of our lifetime. Fascinatingly lives and physically performs a song from beginning to end.
At 2:40 to 2:45 sent shivers down my spine...truly a rare singer for that era.

That's the best I've ever seen anyone sing that song. Maybe people will start to see how powerful those words truly are. David Gates comparing the love of his life to that of the universe is truly a poetic masterpiece. And wouldn't it be heavily, when the world was through, that you and the love of your life would simply Fly Away. Wow! How do you top that? The song is genius.
Absolutely! Very poetic.
It's a defining song for a vocalist. There are a few like that, they draw out the gifts to live up to the melody which is a rare and unique one. Not sure what was in the water at that time in the 70s but the most personal love songs were written then. They seem to transcend genre as you see here. Belting this delicate of a song works for Shirley.

Wow. Back in the late 60's my neighbour was a huge fan of this artist, and I ignored him until 2023 today, and only to find one of the best vocalists ... it seems we never get to hear it all.
Your neighbor had great taste in vocalist/performers, that's for sure. It's never too late to take a real listen and watch this lady perform. When it comes to a performance, few have been able to imitate the way she moves on stage. Her eye, facial, hand, arm, body movements are one-of-a-kind.
