GAME: Persona 3 Reload
AUTHOR: Atlus
As with the original Persona 3, the protagonist is a high school student returning to his home city a decade after his parents were killed in a fatal car crash. He soon gains the potential to summon a Persona-the physical manifestation of his inner spirit, and joins the Specialized Extracurricular Execution Squad (S.E.E.S.), a group of like-minded Persona users. Together, they are tasked with defeating Shadows and uncovering the mystery of the Dark Hour.

So if you didn't complete Bebe's social link by now, he actually would tag along for the Kyoto trip. Needless to say, he has an absolute blast during it. He specifically remarks how impressed he is about a mini pagoda made of matchsticks the hotel is selling in the gift shop, about how he tried to put on a yukata and got so caught up in wanting to look like an evil magistrate he saw on TV that the strings got tangled and he got into a wardrobe accident, and even about how excited he was visiting some of the temples and shrines. It's one of the few social links I regret finishing early, because Bebe is adorable and deserves to have gone on that trip 😢
I held off on Bebe's rank 9 just to make sure he would be part of the school trip. XD

As you can imagine, FeMC's version of the hot springs event is pretty much what you'd expect. You can either hunt the guys down, be lazy and give up, or they can get away because you decided this is the perfect opportunity to troll Yukari and/or Fuuka. However, P3P also added more options to the Male MC's version. Like this exchange for example:
The towel around Junpei's waist is about to fall off...
At this rate, it might fall off right on top of Yukari...!
Male MC: Fix his towel

I think that if you're the FeMC in a relationship with Akihiko and let the boy get away with it, Akihiko will be so ashamed that when you get back to the dorms he'll just say he doesn't deserve to speak to you if you try to talk to him.

I wish they kept some of Portable's options for the hot spring scene. Like for example Minato having the option to imitate a cat noise, and when the girls mistake it for a fox You can have Minato stay quiet. Or just have him yell "IT'S A CAT DAMMIT!!!"
I'm just glad we could avoid getting beaten up. It's why peopke tolerate this hot spring

The amount of comparisons you can make between Jojo parts 1-5 and Persona 1-5 is scary
so the reason why junpei and p3 protag were holding onto ryoji is because of the temple they were at in Kyoto, called kiyomizu-dera temple. which has a myth during the edo period that if you jump off from the stage and survive the fall from it a wish will become true, so in other words junpei and bizzle stopped ryoji from almost killing himself
The Blue Haired guy on Tv is Eikichi "Michel" Mishina from the Persona 2 duology. He's of the Death Arcana, his starting Persona is Rhadamanthus, he hits people with his guitar case, and he's voiced by Troy Baker. He acts completely narcissistic but actually has very low self-esteem from both being bullied as a kid for being fat and by being terrified of his dad who once claimed to know 18 types of martial arts to intimidate Eikichi.
Also, his guitar case has a machine gun compartment, and his second-tier Persona is Hades.
He doesn't hit people with the guitar case, the guitar case has a built-in gun.

I have always found it weird how Ryoji immediately becomes your new best friend. He is seemingly completely unrelated to SEES's mission and yet he quickly integrates into the friend group and is treated as if he has always been one of the boys. Ryoji is plenty likable and it is nice seeing Junpei having fun with a guy friend, so it is not bad, just weird.
Yeah, makes me wonder what an AU would be like where Ryoji was introduced earlier in the story, or was a member of SEES.

According to the manga, 'execution' is 'freeze you in a block of ice and leave you there to think about what you've done'. Of course Akihiko's scared, he's weak to ice!

Fun fact, in the original games Mitsuru was only available three days a week (Tues, Thurs and Sat) but in Reload they doubled it and made her available everyday, except Sunday of course.
So, yeah if you level Mitsuru's Link up a bit, you can completely finish it in the week leading up to exams (which I strongly recommend doing), where it won't clash with the remaining school Social Links.
AND she's the only school SL available during exam preparation week, that's 5-6 free ranks!

The Han honorific is a "Kansai" thing. Kansai being the region of Japan that includes, Kyoto, Osaka, and Nara to name a few.
Yeah I learned that in nico’s LP yakuza 0 when u play as Majima they do use « han » that’s why he said it’s familiar
i gotta say, i heavily disagree with the cotd. I *really like* how much of a mundane down to earth problem keisuke has, and that its about him being unsure of his future despite having two possible bright prospects ahead of him because hes not sure if its based on his decision or if hes just following his parents will.

It's not that there's nothing to like about it. Most people feel it's boring compared to all the others. It's kind of relatable, but people are looking for something more, generally.
Amidst every Social Links that related to the lost of someone or things close to you, I'm glad that at least the game has one SL that are "normal" for once. It's been dark enough 😢
@@linhlenguyen1749 Well, "loss" has many forms in this game, not just mortal death. In Keisuke's case, is "loss of opportunities" aka which one he has to let go of for good.
In case you like to know, in the FeMC's route, they actually stop around Yasoinaba, the same place in P4 and there's a cameo place of Yukiko who's currently in middle school since this takes place two years before P4.
They even bring up how you somewhat resemble Chie in personality
"GODDAMMIT WHY CAN'T I BE CANONICALLY BISEXUAL" because NicoB, we can't have nice things such as romancing Ryoji. Papa Atlus said no even though he has stated during the FeMC route that he'd be attracted to either of the protagonists in Portable. Please don't let anything bad happen to this sweet, wholesome sunshine boi game.

@@DanielPereira-ey9nt Truee, I forgot all about that. I'm glad FeMC gets same-sex romance options, I just kind of wish that also applied to the male MC as well. Also might be since in my run, I didn't complete all of Elizabeth's requests or hang out events simply because I forgot all about it. May do that in a second run, though!

If you're curious about why Ryoji was jumping off that balcony, there is a temple in Kyoto (Kiyomizu-dera) where it's said that if you survive jumping off the 43 foot balcony then you would have a wish granted. In Japan the phrase, "to jump off the stage at Kiyomizu" is analogous to the English phrase, "take the plunge". Around 234 people are recorded to have jumped, with 85.4 percent surviving. The practice has been prohibited since 1872.
So, what I'm hearing is junpei & Mc are trying to prevent ryoji from a: doing something stupid and b: being bloody arrested since it's prohibited by law.
I went there once - was crowded so much - also pinnacle Detective Conan manga case took place at that location.
Just a reminder that the Persona 4 Arena games show the Persona 3 cast can use their Personas in the real world. So, in other words, when Mitsuru catches and executes the guys, she's canonically (and hilariously) using her Theurgy/P4A Instant Kill on them. I guess when you screw around a lot, you can take finding out a lot.

@@MaxusFox23 Since they didn't put the trope in P5 (base or Royal) that gives me hope that they won't put it in, at the very least, the main game future installments. They might still stick it in spin off stuff, which is annoying BUT I'd take it over putting stuff like that in the main game.
I don't really mind it here, i feel it's one of the few times it's done well/ everyone is in character in either scenario.

An interesting fact is that every character that's interviewed in this segment shows up on their respective birthdays, except for this one, who's birthday was stated to be on November 15th previously. The reason why his birthday was moved forward a day is probably because otherwise it would fall on a Sunday, when the TV in the dorm plays episodes of Phoenix Ranger: Featherman R.
Didn't Mitsuru's dad say something about their family separating from the Mishina group ?

If you're struggling to think of what to do in your free evenings, there's a trophy for earning a total of 50,000 yen from part-time jobs. So that could give you something to do :).
So, I did some calculations, adding up how many school days you need to finish all the school Social Links (including Mitsuru and Aigis) vs how many school days are actually left in the game. You should have enough time to finish all of them, and there are a couple days wiggle room for Linked Episode/s. But I forget how many of those are left so it might be pretty close on fitting everything in, you might have to sacrifice one or two hangouts with Social Links (and not complete all of them) to finish the Linked Episodes, or reload some of the final episodes after seeing them. It'll be up to you on what to prioritize at the end, but definitely make use of the dating site notes to help any lagging Social Links.
Even Kenji? Wow. I figured Kenji would be left hanging by the end of the LP.
@@ekimmak Unless Nico completely ignores him, he should be able to finish him too. I didn't work it all out to a tee, like what's the most optimal character for each day. Just that the overall number of school days left in the game is higher than what he needs to finish in time. Since Nico is slowly working towards Kenji's now and he knows that Mitsuru is free during the lead up to exams, he should be able to pull it off I think.

57:40 Being in full control of that sequence was just in the FES version, but I’m pretty sure the original & portable versions were text-based, so I guess this game decided to go with the format that was in more versions.
Full control for the hot springs was in the original as well, I believe. It's just that Reload has a tendency to favor the P3P script's interpretations. If we're being honest though, the controllable version was super clunky and figuring out what you were supposed to do to escape was not at all intuitive, so the change is probably for the better.
The games script is based on the portable's so I guess why they kept it choice based cause that's how portable was.
@@p.j.3578 not really. It was pretty clear what wanted you to do the evade them in the fully controlled version. They say their going left, you go right and vice versa.
@@jadendobson9614 The main issue is that the game doesn't fully articulate that your goal is to just hide rather than actually sneak out, and the top-down perspective makes it so you don't get a good lay of the land to tell that the paths to the exit are constantly under watch.
The Trish segment was about Eikichi from Persona 2, you could say he's the original Junpei/Yosuke/Ryuji. And the lady with the blue hair is also a character from P1 and P2

Many years ago I found a himdaisy comic, thanks to that I found out what Mitsuru's execution is. when Mitsuru executes you she uses MaBufudyne on you. Guess who is weak to Ice on the team! And if you fail the girls just give you stares and ........... until you get home.

You're not misremembering, you did indeed control Minato during that hotspring scene and had to maneuver yourself to the exit.
The funny part about if you fail, the girls will straight up not talk to you, Mitsuru will just ignore you and walk past, and even going back to the dorms, the girls will still feel like not talking to you, while Mitusru completely avoids talking about it altogether
I genuinely love the difference between the beginning of the game and now for Yukari and Mitsuru.
In the beginning of the game Yukari did not trust Mitsuru. She had tied Mitsuru and her motivations very close to her suspicions regarding the Kirijo family’s involvement in her father’s death. Understandably so. This led her to being very distant, awkward and even sometimes hostile toward Mitsuru and assuming the worst in her even when Mitsuru hadn’t actually done anything (see the beach saga for an example of this).
Mitsuru, likewise, was kind of indifferent to Yukari. Yukari was just a means to an end, another warm body to help fight the Shadows and maybe solve the mysteries of Tartarus while correcting the mistakes of her family. She didn’t dislike Yukari, and obviously didn’t want her to get hurt, but saw her as little more than an asset.
Flash forward to now, where Yukari is actively reaching out her hand to Mitsuru, pulling her back from a depressive and defeatist spiral. Not only because they are now Dead Dad Buddies but she sees now that Mitsuru is also just a scared teenager with so much on her shoulders and just wants to fix things. While her methods may have been a bit much (Yukari loves to hit people I guess) it’s enough to snap Mitsuru back to her senses and get her to see that she’s not in this alone, that she doesn’t have to carry the burden by herself. She has the team, but also Yukari who has now promised to fight to the end with her and to face whatever comes next by her side. Which leads to the first time Mitsuru has actually called Yukari by her first name in the entire game.
It’s all just really good and I love the way their bond has developed.
Also, after that cutscene if you look out the window to the hot spring you can see them both standing out there on a date *cough* I mean, hanging out. Yeah. Totally. Just gals being pals.
What I really like, that really shows how their relationship has changed is that, from this point on, Mitsuru calls Yukari by her first name now. She calls everybody by their last name except Akihiko (and of course Aigis and Koromaru who only have one name), so it's really sweet to see Mitsuru start to open herself up more to others now.
You really dropped the ball with that last part
Romance is not the end-all be-all of relationships, Persona more than any other series shows how people don't need to be in love to have a strong and meaningful bond with each other

Fun facts about the Kyoto trip:
-As someone mentioned in the earlier comments, the UI for the shop changes to Makoto wearing a yukata, but this isn't the only time it's changed, as he has a different sprite for each outfit (summer, winter, casual, and yukata, I believe)
-I don't think they make it super clear here, but Keisuke and Odagiri went to elementary school together! Also, they had another conversation on the last day of the trip in Portable that didn't make it into Reload; basically Keisuke wanted to ride a deer and was going to lure one with a treat, only for the treat to be eaten and Odagiri to have to save Keisuke from getting gored by deer horns lmao
-They did have photos from the trip in both FES and in Portable, Ryoji was just significantly less unhinged in the previous versions and did not try to jump off a temple
-Everyone below has already covered everything about the hot springs and how it works with femc, so I'll just say that anyone who hasn't seen the hot springs scene from portable for male mc and femc absolutely should watch it because it's hilarious
-The song from Ryoji's music box has no confirmed name, as far as I've found but it does have similarities to Tsubasa Wo Kudasai, which was originally created in 1970 and is a popular folk song in Japan. However, it's most famously known from Neon Genesis Evangelion's 2009 movie. While the lyrics are relatively hopeful, in Evangelion specifically, it's one of those "sounds nice but is depressing af" songs, which fits Ryoji and his overall arc pretty well imo
Also, this is less game-related, but in the future, maybe try not to describe something as oriental - it's just a pretty outdated term and has some negative connotations associated with it. I know you definitely were not intending anything with it, but I just wanted to try and be informative! Thank you as always for awesome videos - it's been super fun to watch your playthrough of Reload!
Persona 3: Protagonist is able to come up with a do or die plan that would potentially get his men to live another day.
Persona 4: Protagonist didn't go to the baths because of misinformation from a girl who literally lives and works there.
Persona 5 Strikers: Protagonist and his friends got their asses handed to them because a simple misunderstanding which the mature girl didn't let them talk.
I wish Strikers also allowed for an escape, considering both P3’s & P5S’s Hot spring scenes take place in Kyoto. I wouldn’t even mind if it was just one chance, with one text box having you choose from 3 options.

Man, Kyoto is just the city for gay dates. Mitsuru and Yukari, Protag-kun and Ryoji, somehow Odagiri and Keisuke getting in on that action. Wonderful.
Nice! The school trip to Kyoto was a fun event and the hot spring bath scene was a good fan service event, too. ^_^
Yes, in the original game you can move around and have to hide from the girls, while in this new P3R game (and in P3P game, too), you decides what you should do by choosing the right options.
There was even a new option/scene in that "escape from the girls in the hot spring bath" in it, because the "use the duck as a red herring" is a new option which the original game did not has. The P3P (male side) game had some funny options, too (like imitating a cat and fix Junpei´s towel which were quite hilarious, because by "imitating a cat", Yukari thought it was a fox and the male MC was upset about it and by "fixing Junpei´s towel" when you noticed that it could fall off, Junpei was upset and yelled "why are you touching me?" or something like that and of course the girls heard that. Also in the FeMC route, you can decide if you stil searching with the girls and catch the boys or let them go/escape, too. ^^
Keisuke social link illustrates a good point about dealing with expectations of a path that's been built out in front of you by someone else and being expected to do it because someone else decided that's what you have to do without any consideration of what it is that you really want to do. Everyone expects him to do it, as mentioned during the social link both by a girl during the second rank when fuuka starts to feel ill and by himself, with the art classes you can tell that he isn't particularly confident about it nor doing in as something the future and he mentions this when he thinks about quitting the art classes, the social link makes it clear that he's mainly doing the art classes to subvert everyone's expectations of him becoming a doctor
So the game has a stoic protag whose hair is swept over one eye and fights monstrous enemies with a sword while contemplating the inevitability of death... Everything that lives is designed to end.
I do recommend seeing what Yuko says if haven't friendzoned her before the trip. It's very cute, but also gives more insight on the bond between the MC and his classmates and the members of SEES.

Not gonna lie, the hot spring events are usually what I dislike from Persona games the most, usually it involves pushing for dumb situations really far beyond what would happen there.
It's just a stupid excuse for the guys to get beat up.
I think one of my favourite things about P3 is how they don’t make the protagonist the most important person in everyone’s story. Persona always makes the protag the most special boy the world has ever known, regardless of the game, but P3 let’s the fellow party members breathe with each other instead of leaving it all in the hands of the protag. Yukari being the one to help Mitsuru makes the group feels more cohesive than just centring around one single protag; a problem I think P4 and especially P5 suffer from sometimes

This conversation with Odagiri and Hiragi were actually untranslated in P3P (may have been FES I didn't actually find it so I heard it second hand am recalling from memory). So if you go back and play it and find Odagiri and Hiragi their lines in Kyoto are still in Japanese.

For those asking about the music box song: Nobody's actually sure of what song it is.
I've heard claims like it's "Tsubasa wo Kudasai" (that song Junko made Mukuro sing during that one bloody episode of DR3 Despair Arc) or even Persona 4's "Never More".

In Japan, it's considered disrespectful to use a person's name (let alone their first name) without an honorific unless you're _at least_ really close friends with them. Even then, you have to have the other person's permission. So the fact that they're both now on a first-name basis is AMAZING!!! (Yukari still uses the -senpai honorific, but I believe, prior to this, she mainly called her Kirijo-senpai. Again, still a pretty major milestone.)
From what I recall of the original school trip, instead of the snapshots, it's just various sprites walking around a Kyoto-themed area as the camera pans over.

I think the main problem with Nozomi's Social link, rather then the stuff with the cult is the fact that the game kinda tries to insert three different stories in one Link, not allowing any of them to feel fully realized.
You have one about just eating food with him, learning how some foodstuff is the best and just a general spending time between friends.
Then you have the story with the dead brother and how Nozomi feels insecure due to him and how he seemingly badly deals with how his death affects him.
Then there's the whole deal with the scummy cult and ascension to a higher state.
While there is some mingling between those stories, it's not nearly enough to make it feel like now cohesive story but 3 different stories that are told with not enough time to flesh them out.

Each person gives a different type of extra crop, if I remember correctly, junpei always give a bunch of weaker versions of the crop, Aegis makes a extra plant that affects the whole party, but I can’t remember the others
Iirc, shinjiro gives enhanced plants that increased the benefits in general, either the amount of healing or the length of a buff. Idk what fuuka does to the plants off the top of my head.

TBH, I disagree with people's views on Keisuke's route. His route is about an overbearing father of a rich kid. Keisuke wants to leave his parent's shadow, and do what he wants and needs, all by his own merit. The issue, of course, is that no matter what path he goes down, his father eliminates all possible obstacles in his path. He WANTS the struggle, and that lack of struggle is what has caused his disinterest in what he likes, leading to him not knowing what to do, and his major aversion to his father's will.

I agree with Nico, Mitsuru and Yukari's friendship is very nicely written and endearing. There's this whole arc where they start out with a lot of bad blood but eventually become friends over their similar life experiences. And we see in P4 Arena that maintaining their friendship requires a conscious effort from them, which is more realistic and relatable than the naturally inseparable buddies we tend to see in anime and games
Bebe definitely would've enjoyed the Kyoto school trip if he was allowed to stay in Japan.
It's nice that you're given a chance to escape the worst case scenario in this version of the hot springs scene.
Hey Nico, I'd suggest fusing a few more personas when you get a chance, something cool may happen if you fuse certain personas
I think Keisuke serves a thematic purpose as well. Bearing in mind that the majority of the main characters don't have parents, including the protagonist, and thus can't relate to his frustration. They'd do anything to have people in their lives that care that much about them and their future. He is a grounding force that reminds you of what they lack, that these are the problems that most kids their age have to deal with.
The honorific -Han is commonly used in the Kansas/Kinki region of Japan. You heard it many times in the Yakuza series with many of the Osaka-based Yakuza (Ryuji Goda for example) use it as Kyoto and Osaka are in the Kansai region and are a stone throws apart from each other.

Mitsuru is avaliable on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays (same schedule as Chihiro), while she'll be avaliable during the whole exam preparation week. That's 5-6 secured ranks.
You could hustle the later bulk of hers during that week and since there aren't many SLs left to push to complete (only one more to unlock in the final month of the game), you should have just enough time for them all.

So as you where walking around the hotel on the school trip you can talk to all of your school social links. However, since you finished Bebe's social link he didn't get to come to the school trip, if you didn't finish it before the trip he would have been hanging out in the store area. So congrats Nico, your love for Bebe made it so that he couldn't experience a Japanese School Trip, I hope you're proud of yourself.

When I got the hot spring section, I made the same choices as you did. That aside, I really wish that the game had added a little more to the consequences of failing that part as it feels a little hollow in my opinion. Like, you have to give 3 gifts to each of the girls that you have a social link going with. At least, the gifts would have a little more role than it does.
