- The rare full-length performance of Byker Hill by Martin Carthy and Dave Swarbrick live on 'Once More With Felix', BBC Two, December 16 1967. They are then joined by Julie Felix for a version of Gordon Lightfoot's song Early Morning Rain.
This video was originally on another channel which has sadly been taken down altogether by UA-cam. I'm only putting it up here now because of that very unfortunate event, as it definitely deserves to be seen, but I claim no credit for it.
Delightful. A fine looking lady singing smilingly, unpretentiously, with unrestrained fulness of voice; just seemingly being herself and enjoying every moment of it.
What a charming young lady and talented too. Bob Dylan tipped me off to Martin Carthy. You could live several lifetimes and need never stop learning about and discovering new music.
Simply wonderful to see the lovely Julie Felix and then Dave and Martin, just as we want to remember them - in their prime and never to age. What joy they brought us and now blessed we are to have known their music. When they are joined by Julie we are reminded of the beauty of her voice - as was the norm in those days, just sung straight with a purity now lost in an age of absurd and incoherent vocal histrionics.
Gordon Lightfoot’s “Early Morning Rain” is one of my favourites, but it is a sad song and has been jollied-up too much here.
RIP Julie. I first heard heard her as a 5 year old in the mid-60s, my dad was obsessed. She may well have been the first singer I knew by name. Her version of Masters Of War used to scare me rigid, I remember that. I always asked my father to skip it when he played the LP when I was in the room.
❤Gudomlig vacker kvinna fantastisk sångröst from Sweden ❤❤❤
😢RIP Julie ❤
All flowers sadly fade in time 😢
What a gem. Beautiful voice of Julie backed by two of my favourite musicians doing a song of one of my favourite song writers.
Not seen this one before - wonderful - only Martin left now, RIP Julie and Dave

Just found this thxs to algorithm (Early Morning Rain) and now I know of the phenomenal Julie Felix. Doing my research on this unique talented beauty.
Incredible footage. We forget Julie was very popular in the late 60s. My wife remembers seeing her solo show at the Royal Albert Hall around this time.
Amazing 👌I remember watching this on TV in black and white🤗
Magic!

Wow - never heard of her - seems like lovely lady. She sounds GREAT! When songs were songs with great stories and depth
I'd forgotten about her and found her again by accident when searching for songs by the Incredible String Band.

On Early Morning Rain is that bass I'm hearing Danny Thompson?
Back when singers sang without needing autotune
Millions of us sing without autotune. Look around.
@@AndrewCalhounSongs Granted, but look at the ones who get into the charts that do use it.
✨💙✨
when folk musicians wore ties!
That was the chaps! The girls wore mini skirts - good of them!
I wonder who the out -of-shot double bass player was?
I think Martin lowered his tuning to make the guitar sound like a bass. Just watch his picking and match it to the bass beat.
Sounds like Danny Thompson
How did that survive, and is there any more from Julie's shows? Also, who was on double bass?
What double bass? Martin Carthy on the bottom strings.
Plenty if you tube 'once more with Felix'
No, there's a double bass sound in it, and it's not Carthy playing.
David Frost got in with Julie, Completely ruined early morning rain which deserves a bit more emotion when singing it as opposed to Butlins holiday camp!
Agree. Beautiful smile, but not appropriate for this song.
Sagolik gudinna fantastisk sångröst Slava Ukraina ☮️❤️❤️ 😍 Slava Ukraina ☮️❤️😍 hälsningar från Sweden
Martin and Dave great together but failed with Julie who gave all only to be backed by weak guitar and mandolin folksy picking and no harmony vocal.
This powerful Gordon Lightfoot song deserved better, a lot better.
