    If you want to save some weight off your saws try the Oregon versacut bars. They are light and inexpensive, not tip maintenance required either. Skip tooth chain is lighter and works better for noodling. You just have to find the best setting for the depth gauge and the cut fast. Less teeth to sharpen too

    I'll take a stab at it. The reason why you run three saws, always need one backup in case you pinch a bar hard, is so that you can sharpen the saws in the shop/garage than in the cold wood yard?

    • @InTheWoodyard
      @InTheWoodyard  3 роки тому +3

      Yes that is part of the reason. It is better for the saws to cool down and they will last longer if they are not run to hard. Also I like to have three or more sharp chains ready to go so I don't have to spend time in the woods or wood yard sharpening, I can do that at night or over a lunch break. Or if I have a breakdown or problem I just grab the next one.

  • @thefirewooddoctor
    @thefirewooddoctor 3 роки тому +1

    Where did you come across the chainsaw method called "stand up and buck"? Got the idea of using a long bar to reach the logs on the ground from a Buckin Billy Ray video. A lot of people prefer a shorter bar versus a short one, with many citing that beginners shluld stick to a short bar. What are your thoughts on the "stand up and buck" method versus the old way of bucking logs? Would make for good video content and discussion. Going to save up and get a semi load of logs this coming late spring to early summer.

    • @InTheWoodyard
      @InTheWoodyard  3 роки тому +1

      Mainly I can cut for longer periods of time because I don't have to bend as much to cut, so my back is not as tired. Also, a longer reach is nice. But I would not go much longer for moving the saw around gets trickier in the woods and wood yard with a real long bar.

    • @aldredske6197
      @aldredske6197 3 роки тому

      @@InTheWoodyard I usually don't use bars longer than 24 either. I have 1 saw with a 28 inch just for the the occasional 4 foot diameter tree I come across. Otherwise I usually run a 20 inch bar while limbing and bucking our midwest hardwoods. If the tops are up off the ground I actually like a 16 inch bar on a 70 cc saw with the rakers set a little lower. It's a little grabby but man can you ever make blocks in a hurry in 16 inche and under sized wood.
      It always depends on what kind of wood I'm cutting as to witch saws I take with me. I usually have 5 or 6 saws with me just so I can give them all some running. I think I have around 15 running saws right now and a few old Homelites that need a little work. TTYL!!
