Steph Curry has been speaking to the media lately because he’s promoting a kid’s book he wrote but he let a huge statement slip about his ex-teammate Kevin Durant. This is a look at what he said but more importantly, why he said it.

it's not as cemented as you'd like to think. At least not top 10 like all the overreaction.Steph now tacitly admitted what many have said, his first 3 rings were not that special at all. The first came with huge injuries to the cavaliers. I don't want to hear that "all teams have injuries" bullshit because the 2nd and 3rd best players were out. The next two, if KD's rings have an asterisk, then so do two of Steph's. He was crying because he himself knew how legitimate the criticism was. Three easy ass rings and one legit one .

Takeaway is it dont matter how many rings, it matters how you won them. Nowitzki won one ring. Stayed with the team that drafted him. Willed his team to a ring eventually. Didnt go ringchasing. If Giannis never wins another ring but stays with the Bucks, it dont matter. He brought a ring to a city that hadnt had one in ages. Rings from guys who didnt just join a regular contender mean something that cant be accounted for in numbers.

I don't blame if Steph actually prefers his FMVP champ over two team rings. After all, fans and media are more interested in the GOAT *players*, not GOAT teams. And they talk non-stop about those BS everywhere even at the players themselves. Why would anyone call or even think of Curry as the bonus when he was the one who brought the dubs to 2 straight finals appearances before KD came. For stat validation, you can compare their win-lose percentage when Curry is on and off the court vs when KD is on and off the court on the years KD was on. So Curry passed the eye test and the numbers. I wouldn't say that the dubs would've definitely won those 2 rings without KD, but they sure as hell would've got to the Finals again without him.

As a long time Dubs fan, the KD years were awesome but high stress. It felt like they needed to win every game or they were a disappointment. Even though they won a lot, every game that wasn’t a blowout was high stress. Every loss felt so painful. I was actually thankful when the playoffs were over so I could focus on other things. My impression is that they all felt that way and by the 3rd year, it just wasn’t as fun anymore. This last year was awesome because the expectations were so much lower. I asked myself what I thought would be a successful season, and it was getting Klay back and making it past the second round. Admittedly I started to get greedy after that, but it’s nice not to have a championship or bust mentality. These are definitely first world problems, but I can understand why Steph likes his 4th ring more than 2 and 3.

He was just being authentic about how he feels about winning this one, that doesn’t mean that his intention was to throw shades at KD. It definitely means a lot more to most people when you overcome big challenges/obstacles against all odds than to achieve something that’s easily achieved, and even sweeter when basically everyone (apart from the GSW fans that always knew they could do it ;)) was doubting them. He probably realized later that people including KD could have taken it the wrong way, that’s why he had to make sure people know how much he loves and respects KD.
Anyhow, on a different note, as much as I love your content, I have to disagree that KD is the better player. If you purely talk in terms of physicality & iso game, then yes. But if you factor in the other aspects that is not so easily measured such as leadership, team player, or impact to the game, his ratings would go through the roof. If you don’t consider those aspects of the game as part of being a great player (like a lot of people), you won’t understand how amazing of a player Steph is. I would always take someone selfless like Steph on my team who cares more about winning than his own stats over someone who has the best offensive numbers but can’t get his team to perform. This is why we have seen so many super teams failed in the past. Steph is so underrated because he doesn’t get enough credit for opening up the defense and allow his teammates to get easy buckets due to his great offensive range that no one have ever seen before. Who else can do that in the league…not now or EVER. It’s because he can cause so much damage at such a long range, it’s his ability to weaken the other team’s defense. How do you rate that??? Wouldn’t that make him a great player?? Who else can cause so much damage to the opposing team’s defense as much as he can the way he does???
If you look at the stats of how much he impacts his teammates when he is on the court vs off the courts, his ratings is higher than everyone else including MJ and LJ. That easily makes him one of the all time greats in my book. Should check out the vdo by this guy to see the stats of how much he’s impacted the game whenever he steps on the court:
    ua-cam.com/video/4zxq70PjnC8/v-deo.html
Anyway, great content as always. Just my 2 cents, and hope that maybe it can somewhat help you make even better content in the future. Cheers.

Yo Casey! I think you make a lot of good points. But I think in some of the excerpt quotes from Steph, he kind of grouped the rings in a very deliberate way. He said the 1st they didn’t know what they were doing. Then the next ones were validation. Steph being that humble player you described… realized that the 2 rings did not validate the 1 they won already. He wasn’t finals MVP and a lot of talking heads got on him because of Andre getting the award. So I don’t think it’s really talking about the ease of having KD and winning but that this one was the real validation of ring 1. The catharsis of struggling and being injured over 3 years. The narrative of the 1st never went away for him and looking back I think this one he’s the most appreciative of because of the journey. And unlike KD, his journey only solidified his faith and belief in himself and the team that was built around him.

I hate how they say "If KD wouldn't have gotten injured they would've 3-peated" nooo if KLAY didn't didn't get injured they would've 3-peated. We didn't lose hope at all when KD got injured, it was when Klay did that shook up the franchise.

Everyone who overcomes adversity will tell you that the success afterward is much sweeter than if you had all the cards stacked for you. That's why Tom Brady's ring at Tampa was so sweet. KD will likely continue to struggle with his ego, and Steph's remarks. That's the sting of losing and reality. He should be happy for Steph's continued success and inspired by it. It should be humbling. Great commentary.

I love the consistent production value of your videos, but the content is hit-or-miss: I love it when you do deep dives with solid stats to back it up & potential trade mockups (also that stupidest injuries video was pretty funny not gonna lie), but then you'll release a video like this where it's basically water-cooler gossip, making mountains out of molehills. He made a one-off comment, does it really need 8 minutes of coverage? I'm sure I'm not the only one who would prefer it if you did a video or two covering EuroBasket 2022 currently happening: that tournament is bananas this year. Please don't take this as hate, I'm a huge fan of your channel, just thought I'd chip in as this has been a recurring issue I've felt with your channel. Thanks for all your hard work!

I think this last one only meant so much because he stepped up and carried his team like an unstoppable monster when it mattered most on the biggest stage against a strong healthy defense. The peak of his evolution you could say while his core of Green/Klay seemed to get weaker, he went to a whole new level.
Like if Steph is in that mode and your defense can't slow him down significantly or stop him do you even walk away with a series anymore?

  • @AndyPresto75

Both things are true in that Steph values the latest ring most due to the doubters and being in the middle of a rebuild after 2 years in the wilderness, plus he genuinely loves KD and would've happily teamed up again. It was never going to happen with the Nets' ridiculous trade expectations and the Dubs unwilling to totally trade away the future and their young core, but it's still fun to think about KD returning to the bay and making us unbeatable again, while exploring the possibility was simply due dilligence by a front office that is arguably the best in professional US sport for good reason. Go Dubs!

Not a dis at KD at all. In fact, the opposite. Steph was saying the 2022 one was so much harder. It is more valuable because of the extreme effort he had to give to get it. In turn, that would make the 2 with KD easier, and that is because of KD's greatness.

i don’t think either of these theories are spot on. i think curry values this last chip more because of the hell the team went through the last 2 seasons before with klay missing both seasons and then losing in the play in.
i also believe he knows that KD pushed them over the top for sure, hence the “hell yeah” but of course he’s gonna say that he thinks they can win again as presently constructed. curry is smart enough to know that he needs to instill confidence in his young teammates by saying this instead of doing the lebron thing where you think you’re about to be traded to get a veteran on the roster. we don’t know if curry advocated the front office to trade for KD but for sure he’s not so stupid as to let the likes of poole, kuminga, wiseman, or moody know what he really wants.

Such a "slow news day" kind of story to report about. Re: keeping the 2022 ring it makes sense, the chip is sweeter having come from the bottom to make it to the top of the NBA standings, and I'd be like "what are they gonna say now?" too if it was me, since they were doubting him since his draft. It takes a lot of extrapolation to think that there's beef with KD if he would rather trade the chips that they coasted to, instead of keeping the one they earned through adversity.
