Simon, this is a terrific tutorial; for both the shatter effect and for designing the pane of glass. I'm finishing up a project with a static multi-pane glass window. I wrestled with the glass effect and made something that worked, but it doesn't work as well as I want it to. So, tonight I will re-do the glass window panes. Many thanks! Bill Milbrodt
Bill Milbrodt Yes, glass is generally quite tricky - unless you can see an edge. If you think about how it looks in the real world, it's clean, unfrosted glass with no texture or abberations, it will be completely see-through when seen flat on, to the point where it will usually look as though it's not there at all. It's only by seeing an edge (or bevel), a reflection or a specular highlight that it's visible at all.
Merci
Great as always. I especially liked the tip about transforming a path so its position is unaffected. I've flubbed that a few times when keyframing and it gets ugly. Thanks.
Design Your Own Card Thanks. Yes, I'm a bit OCD about having everything centred up so I thought this would be a useful tip to share - not that it's really necessary for this project ;-)
Hi Simon, I'm trying to find a tutorial you had done in the past that mentioned something about adding grain to a project to help eliminate the rings caused by placing a gradient or a vignette effect. Can you expand on that or give a full explanation of how adding the grain eliminates those rings?
Is there an easy explanation on how to do the little particle shards? I followed your tutorial exactly and it turned out pretty good! I just really want the little shards to be the final touch. Thank you for such amazing tutorials!! It's much appreciate!
+Rachael Weinstein I'm afraid I can't remember exactly what I did with those tiny particles but you can download my project if that helps: tokyo-uk.com/Motion/Glass.Shards.TUTORIAL.zip
I really wanted to make this tutorial, but at 5:35 my viewer screen went black and only the clone was showing. The only way to get the background back on it to uncheck the group that has bezier, clone, and caustics.
Emmaus Vanderbilt Sorry, I can't imagine what you've done wrong, but if you'd like to send me your project (email address in the About tab above) I'll troubleshoot it for you.
When I apply the linear dodge to the replicator, nothing much happens apart from getting an adjustable box on the screen - not shown on the tutorial. Any thoughts?
Super Mega Epic Bash! Motion doesn't have this lens flare - what you see in this video (and also in the new Power Matrix demo) is something I have been working on for a while now and I do have a tutorial planned to show how it all works, but it's a very big project.
Yes, that's right - I simply made multiple instances of the shard ... I started to show the process but then explained that I was skipping forward so you didn't have to watch the slightly painstakingly slow process.
Hi, I know you made this a while ago, but I was trying to create it now for a school project I'm working on and got to making a second shard, but whenever I move the anchor point, the shard moves too. Do you know what I did wrong? Thanks.
***** Hi, Yes, I'm afraid I've taken down both Visualizer tutorials as they were a magnet for people who didn't actually want to learn to use Motion and just wanted an instant effect - which was not the point of posting them at all. There was only ever one version of the Weld Cutter tutorial and that is still there: ua-cam.com/video/scbXhiZy8uA/v-deo.html
I think I have the same problem. It happens in blend mode on the Clone Layer when Alpha Stencil is selected. If I uncheck the Bezier Layer it acts as a mask and I can see the video within the shape. Unchecking the Clone, the shape and Caustic filter remain over the video. Is there a box I'm missing? Thanks
Meteoroz The background is just a rusty metal texture from me own library of textures and the text is generated using the Text Tool in Motion - I set the blend mode of the text to overlay to create a more natural look. There are millions of textures online, a lot of them free, and your digital camera or phone is another great way of acquiring them - keep your eyes open when you're out and about and grab any texture that looks interesting. That way it's yours and unique - as well as free ;-)
It should be ⌥⌘⇧T ... don't forget the alt(opt). (I maybe I forgot to add it in the commentary, I can't remember.) Or you could use the right-click shortcut in the Canvas. You must have the points selected though.
You, Sir, are a genius. Everytime I watch one of your tutorials, I learn a new trick or two. Thank you very much.

Simon Ubsdell That's extremely helpful. I'm better at it today than I was yesterday. Many thanks. Bill
Bill Milbrodt Hope it goes well - I know how frustrating it can be to recreate a material that most of the time doesn't appear to be there ;-)
Just bought Motion 5 and these video are amazing. Thank you very much for all the time you put into these tutorials!
Amp Snappers Thanks very much. Motion is simply incredible value, and really crazily powerful once you get used to it..
fantastic tutorial!

invaluable as always. Learn so much from your tutorials. Thanks so much
Can't wait for the weekend, so I can follow along....THANKS!!!
it's Me Justin Hope it's worth the wait ;-)

can you tell me what that shortcut is? my cmd shift t doesn't work

That is so nice of you. I really appreciate it!
Simon Ubsdel, i hope you get paid well for what you have done. thank you mate.
whenever I use the bezier and try to hit stencil alpha, it removes my entire background ...? How can I fix this?
I really wanted to make this tutorial, but at 5:35 my viewer screen went black and only the clone was showing. The only way to get the background back on it to uncheck the group that has bezier, clone, and caustics.

Emmaus Vanderbilt Same thing happened to me!

when i create a replicator at 8:09 i can't see the shard, i tried the Fixed Resolution but nothing..
“Which I’m sure you know how to do”
Me: completely lost
brilliant
When I apply the linear dodge to the replicator, nothing much happens apart from getting an adjustable box on the screen - not shown on the tutorial. Any thoughts?
It seems there is a lens flare there as the shards on the left break. Does motion have this or does it have to be constructed?
Super Mega Epic Bash! Motion doesn't have this lens flare - what you see in this video (and also in the new Power Matrix demo) is something I have been working on for a while now and I do have a tutorial planned to show how it all works, but it's a very big project.
at 18:16 I don't understand how you made the whole thing glass? Are those more shards??
Yes, that's right - I simply made multiple instances of the shard ... I started to show the process but then explained that I was skipping forward so you didn't have to watch the slightly painstakingly slow process.
Thank you.

Are you sure you are using the Anchor Point tool to move the anchor point? It sounds as though you might still be using the Transform tool
Hey Simon did you take down the Visualizer TUT, and I can not find your New improved weld cutter TUT. any info would be great..

Simon Ubsdell Sorry, I mean to add ... If you'd like to email me (address in the About tab above), I can let you have a link to the unlisted tutorial.
walterbkr822@gmail, Thanks
Just to add that I've put them both back online - I hope I don't regret it :/
Loved it (:

Try setting the Group to Fixed Resolution - that should sort it out.
Simon Ubsdell That did the trick. Thank you so much.
If you don't mind me asking, how did you create the initial text and background? I know nusssing :(

Where can i get the audio of the glass shattering ?

Command shift T does'nt work? 2.35
