Rugby Coaching: Gloucester Lineout Play Variation

  • A nice variation from Gloucester Rugby at the lineout.
First of all an accurate throw to the back of the lineout ties in the Quins defense. The extra ‘sell’ is the fake setup of a maul. Meanwhile, the front pod players of the lineout are working their way around.
A neat pass from the top of the lineout to hard-running No. 8 gives him a chance to build momentum. His supporting player does enough of a clear to get him over the line.
Give this a go with your team!

Would love to see some forward analysis on how Gloucester set up their maul to make it so effective.

That would be well worth a look at. This play developed on the back of Gloucesters strong maul that Quins were focusing on. Also Quins had a forward in the bin so they might have been over committing in anticipation of the maul.

It's great that george skivington identified Gloucesters set piece was poor and rectified it :-)

It worked because of the mismatch the forward basically took the two backs trying to tackle him along for the ride
