- The fascinating story of the North East's very own Gertrude Bell is brought to life on the small screen in a BBC Inside Out programme.
Narrated by Helen Berry, Professor of British History, filming took place at Newcastle University's campus and featured the Special Collections in the Robinson Library as well as in the School of History, Classics and Archaeology. Prof Berry interviewed Dr Mark Jackson lecturer in Archaeology, as they examined selections from the archive chosen from Special Collections with the help of Dr Melanie Wood.
Looking through the photographs and letters, Prof Berry and Dr Jackson, who has responsibility for the Gertrude Bell Photographic Archive, helped to show how the archaeologist Gertrude Bell came to play a leading role in the making of the modern state of Iraq in the early 20th century.
Three postgraduate students from Iraq discussed with Professor Berry their impressions of Gertrude Bell and her legacy for people in Iraq today. Their very candid and eloquent views add depth to the feature.
Interest in the University’s Gertrude Bell archives has remained high in recent years because of the changing political situation in the Middle East. In 2013 a major conference - Gertrude Bell: A Life and Legacy - was held at the British Academy and the Royal Society in London. It was hosted by the British Institute for the Study of Iraq (Gertrude Bell Memorial) in collaboration with the Gertrude Bell Archive at Newcastle University.

The movie was extremely disappointing. The scenery was lovely but the acting left a lot to be desired. Many of actors did not fit the parts, especially Nicole Kidman and Robert Pattinson.

هذه رسالة قوية لكل شرقي طاح في حفرة هؤلاء، هؤلاء أكذب الخلق وأشدهم نفاقًا، يقول لسانهم الأمر لكن فعلهم يقول لك لا تصدقهم. استيقظ ولا تخجل من تاريخك ولا أمتك، فهؤلاء لم يتركوا لك عذرًا.
ما استضافتهم الا العرب والمسلمين انفسهم لكى يطردوا الاتراك من ذاك المنطقة فاستغلت البريطانين ذاك الفرصة

Based on hers and colleagues recommendations and advise to British government the middle east is shaped the way you see today. The mess you see today in the area is partly caused by the people themselves and partly from the way the borders drawn and the governments established by British and French. The result is death of Hundreds of thousands of Kurdish and Shi'it civilians in the hands of minority Suni Governments. Iam not sure what legacy she has left other than been a strong woman

Have read a fair bit of her stuff, I must have missed the reference to her carrying a bath around.
Most of her books & diaries describe her staying in pretty rough conditions most of the time.
the three Iraqi Kurds i the interview mentioned only the Kurdish respective because she recommended that the kurds and shia should not rule Iraq

No chance, apparently, to just tell us about Gertrude Bell in her own right . . . without repeated references to her being a Woman . . .
All men know that when a woman involves herself in any project - be it great or small - it goes pear shaped. Gertrude Bell was a mutant - an immensely rich spoiled brat with family connections to influential and powerful men but intelligent... to a degree.
Unlike TE Lawrence who rose to prominence in spite of his family background which was unfortunate, Bell was able to inflict herself into foreign affairs because of her family's obscene wealth. Churchill would be easy to buy - he always was - so Gerty was allowed to tinker on the fringes of the Sykes/Picot carve-up of the middle east.
If you are thinking of watching the film - don't - it is terrible. Kidman trying hard to look intelligent... oh, come on... should have been called Snogging On A Camel.
