Allan was the sweetest guy… Met him a few times…Shared drinks and food with him. He will go down as the John Coltrane of guitar and as time goes on I truly believe he’ll be more and more appreciated for how great he was. Thank you so much for sharing, you sound amazing.
The John Coltrane of guitar. Never thought of him that way, but having seen it put that way, the description fits perfectly. As with Coltrane, his contribution is massive and will change the way we think of his chosen instrument. Very few people like him. It's a blessing they exist.
Definitely a Coltrane of the guitar, as Allan was known to be a frustrated saxophonist, as that's the instrument he wanted to play when he was a youngster.
Allan personifies love to me.. He flew me across the country twice to audition with him.. The first time was just moments before Chad walked in the studio and the second time just after Vinnie became available.. Playing drums with Allan was an incredible experience as well as meeting and playing with Jeff and later Jimmy.. However it was the man himself that I carried back east with me.. Deep in my heart I knew I had touched something precious that to this day brings a joy unequaled in my lifetime.. Even as I write with shaking hands there is an inner knowing that I touched heaven and that what I came away with far exceeds anything to do with drumming or music.. I know you know exactly of what I speak.. Thank you for sharing this and reminding me that there is goodness beyond measure in this crazy realm.. Peace
If i may add my own Allan story to the mix; I'd seen Allan live a half dozen times in the last 40 years of his career. Starting in 1976, with the New Tony Williams Lifetime . Then, in Germany a few times. One show in particular stood out...i think 1986. Touring with Stanley Clarke, they played in Nuremberg, at the SportsPlatz where the infamous rally was held. The stage was in an old bombed out Nazi bunker that happened to have great acoustics, with the roof blown off... I know...insane. There were maybe 50 people in the crowd, and watching Stanley and Allan duel with each other .. well, the crowd was electrified. I had perfected this Tarzan yell, and let it out during the applause. The band got a kick out of it. They were staying at a hotel near my office, so a group of friends drank and dined with them all night long. More than 10 years later, i saw Allan for the last time, and he remembered the whole thing. Such a sweet and humble man. You could discuss anything with him. I cried when learning of his passing....
I had the great privilege of seeing your play with Holdsdworth in LA, one of his final shows. You fit right in with all those legends - Donati, Holdsworth, and Hunt! We are thankful to have you creating new content for us.
In 2008 when I was 18 I was lucky enough to stumble into Allan Holdsworth at NAMM. I had no idea who he was at the time, but he was one of the kindest people I've met. It was a spiritual experience. RIP to Mr. Holdsworth!
Allan is “the one” if you ask me. In 50 years he will be recognized as such. I saw your performance of letters of marque and your bass solo was incredible. Even Allan seemed intrigued. I usually dread bass solos, except yours and Jaco obviously. Your tone is also spot on, I can’t stand too much treble or a slap type sound.
The first time I ever heard Alan play was on UK's 1st album. I was overwhelmed by his guitar playing. Just brilliant. Never heard anything like it before or since. Sure there's been imitators. There always is brilliant and original musicians but he surely was one of a kind that the Gods surely gifted. Well of course everytime he would be performing in the NYC area my long time friend and I would go to several shows and we would try to sit by his side of the stage. Our jaws would always be dropping with every solo he would perform. My friend and I were very lucky to met him several times and get pictures with him and his autograph. We were looking forward to his next album and tour when he suddenly past away. What a great loss to music and his devoted fans like me. It will never be the same for us without him. May he rest in piece and I still silently thank him for sharing his extraordinary gifts with us.
First time I listened to Allan Holdsworth was in 2018, shortly after starting college. I began studying and listened to The Sixteen Men Of Tain and instantly became a fan. In part, that album pushed me to explore more jazz fusion/progressive genres and I'm thankful for that. Sadly, I won't ever be able to see him perform but his music will carry on in his absence.
Glad to see you give Allan a hug. Sort of in place for the millions of hugs that I and many of his fans would have given him for the music he made and shared. Thanks for sharing your story.
Stumbled on this video after listening to Elisian for the first time. If you ever get down realize that your music speaks to so many people. Allan’s music is my go to when I’m feeling low because it helps me dig in to the complexity of my feelings and how I see the world. Your music does the same thing.
Brother, even though we've only met a few times, I still consider you a friend, and I am honored to be able to do that. Keep being beautiful and doing what you do. You are one of the holders of Allan's legacy, in addition to your own. Just keep doing the right thing with both. Don't ever give up.
Love Allan Holdsworth and love your bass playing. Lovely video. I met him once, in a pub in Wales. But as you said, he was a lovely guy and made time to talk to me, and I’ll never forget it.
Thank you so much for sharing your time with Allan. I love the man and his music. His inspiration is always with me. I started playing at age 19, way back when playing by ear and improvising was the way to go. Like most I did Rock covers in and out of many bands. But when I heard Allan all that changed. It inspired me to go in many directions, that have helped me find my own voice. I am now 69. Like you I am in burn out mode. Which stared when I lost the hearing in my left ear because of Meniere's disease. I have found, for me that most self-doubt is in comparing ones-self to others.
Bro. I was about to buy tickets for that tour. You three were probably my favorite iteration of AH. I was devastated I never got to see you three. As a musician who has felt exactly the same way, THANK YOU for this story.
I’ve had more than a handful of encounters with Allan, and I can testify that he was always a kind gentleman, with a disarming, wry, self-effacing sense of humor. It saddens me he’s not with us any longer, but he left us such a treasure of his art. Yes, he was an amazing musician, but he was just a regular guy with all of the baggage any of us have to deal with. Never forget we all stub our toes, or get our hearts broken and make mistakes or have bad days.
Beautiful Evan, beautiful, and I always loved your work with Dana. PS : every bass players who played with the late LEGEND/PIONEER Allan Holdsworth, should take a bow to the criminally underrated Jimmy Johnson.
Wow, what a heartfelt story. Thank you for sharing something so personal to you. I admit, it's hard to believe that someone with your extreme talent was having doubts and actually quit playing. I did the same. Stopped playing because I was not happy with the music business and trying to get a good gig was difficult. My friend met Allan after a show in the parking lot one night. My friend went over to congratulate him on a great show. But, Allan was very upset and actually crying about how badly he played that night. My friend was shocked that Allan was that upset with himself. Just goes to show that we never know what's happening inside folks sometimes. Evan, you are one of the very best electric bassists we have on this here planet. Your musicianship is superior and most of all a very down to earth and kind person.
Allan and Virgil are my favorite guitarist/drummer respectively. Mad respect for the sheer level of musicianship you attained to gig with them - not to mention the deeply personal and relatable story you shared with us. Thank you for this anecdote and for carrying the torch for high-information improvisatory music! 🙏
I got full body shivers listening. Amazing. Please keep doing this, speaking as one who also once fell into die Hoffnungslosigkeit. Allan's music goes beyond the confines of language to describe it.
The end of this video made me almost cryin. I love Allan. His music helped and helps me alot. Thanx Evan, And thanx to him for helping me seeing so young talents as you are.
Thank you Evan for sharing such a beautiful and uplifting story, Allan was truly special🎸❤️ I am old enough to have bought Allan’s first album, Igginbottom, when it came out, and have followed him ever since. Like so many his unique music spoke to me at a deeply spiritual level and in time I have no doubt it will achieve the full recognition it deserves. And that beautiful clip at the end of the video is so touching, truly special, thank you for sharing it.
I understand the self-doubt thing (seems to cripple a lot of musicians including me), but honestly, any musician that is able to share the same stage as Alan has got to have some serious ability. You rock!
Thanks for sharing Evan. Extremely open of you. It’s been Virg that’s helped me to believe in myself again. Nice to know other people have the same struggles 🙏👍
Damn bro…I remember when I saw you with Allan. I was shocked but to me it made sense. Where you were before that gig I’m at right now. Frustrated. And I stopped for well over three years and now am just getting the fire back to keep pushing. Now I’m just playing to simply get better and more expressive and if this goes in another direction I just can think about. Ultimately I play because it’s my language. Plus…as a drummer I think Allan has had the biggest influence on me more that any drummer. And that’s just real.
Lovely and beautifull playing over that chord progression !! I saw Allan twice both times in London 20 odd years ago he's one the best of any era in music and will probably be reconginsed for that more generally well after his death, beautifull you said yes!!!
There’s a unique beauty in a lot of Allan’s music play some piano and guitar keeps one sane in this mad world play by ear so to me Allan and people like Errol garner are heroes fave pieces zarabeth tullio 16 men of Tain and Allan qui nice memory for you working with Allan andy (bob )yates
Hey man, i can only say thank you! i'm not at the same level musical as you, but i'm in the some situation as you were some time ago. thank you you for sharing your story, i fully believe thats this will help many people as it helped me! thank you once again.
I had no idea you played bass with Holdsworth, until I saw this video. Saying YES is scary. Thank you for the re-assurance that YES is usually the right answer, especially if it forces you to do the impossible.
I stopped playing guitar for a short time after seeing Alan live in the early 90s. Granted I suck so no loss but man Alan is probably the best of all time. I don't really pick a best in art but nobody did it better. Fantastic bass playing and tone. Every note is so clear.
Last time I saw AH was at the baker potato with bunny Brunel on bass and chad Wackerman on drums. Shortly after he died I drove down to Kissel and bought a one off H2 headless in Koa wood as a tribute to him
Playing and performing music, especially in front of others, requires a far bit of confidence, which can often be in short supply, but I'm pleased you said 'yes' to Virgil and Allan, and found your feet again. Thanks for the inspiring story and wonderful playing.
That was a superb solo, dripping with feel and emotion. The good stuff. I was privileged to see Allan play in the Iridium in NY in ‘09 or ‘10. He was amazing. Cheers.
That's a beautiful and encouraging story, Allan will always be missed but musicians like you are making sure his legacy lives on, thank you for sharing this story!
What a great story to share! Holdsworth has always been part of my musical life. And dude...your just killing it. That Virgil album is one of my favorites too!
Used to see Allan at the San Juan Creek Golf Course. He was there all the time. Ran into him at the Mission Viejo mall food court. He was such an amazing talent. Never to be replicated.
I've been following you for pretty much your whole career but I have to say this video resonates with me so much in terms of self doubt and pushing yourself to accept gigs with people when you may be struggling for confidence. Great story, thanks for sharing and keep inspiring us bass players! 👏🏻
Incredibly touching and open video. I'm so glad you crawled out of the abyss to have this experience and come out stronger. Needless to say, Allan was among the greatest of musicians and an incredible human being. I was fortunate to have spent some time with him and can only imagine the depth of wisdom he passed on to you in that personal moment. For those that know and understand, there's very little to compare his legacy to. I'm so glad you shared this story, had this experience, and grew as a musician and a person. Thank you for this video!
Great story Evan... takes a lot to share our own insecurities and life trials publicly. So glad that this story has a happy ending and your music and playing has been inspiring to me for sure.... keep on man!!! ❤️
Thanks for this story. I'm sure you have some 'Allan' stories, and many would love to hear them. Allan was a beautiful unique soul. I miss him. His music will live on, hopefully more will understand and appreciate his genius as time passes. Zabareth.
What a amazing story. I'm so glad you found your passion again with music. I found Allan Holdsworth from a UA-cam comment to a Secret of Mana Video. I was listening to the tune Mystic Invasion and somebody commented that if you like this song you should listen to Allan Holdsworth Looking Glass and that's how I begin going down that rabbit hole of amazing tunes by Allan. I found your music Evan from Allan's Music and I'm so glad i found your videos evan. With your music you can definitely keep Allan's music alive I love your unique type of music evan, it's like the perfect blend of Video games music and Allan Holdsworth unique style of progressive rock/jazz fusion
Evan you really moved me 😢. Allan is my favorite artist and i can't imagine how lucky you were to experience it and play with it. Always carry it within you, you are great
What an incredible video! Your opening up about self doubt is SO much appreciated Evan - and along with your uplifting music - so inspirational. ❤ I've loved and marvelled at Allan's music ever since I first played Guitar Player's flexi-disc of 'Devil Take the Hindmost' - my jaw literally dropped on hearing it. The clip of you and Allan at the end brought a tear to my eye too. btw I just can't stop listening to (your track) Waves - it's soooooooooo good! Play on Evan!
Beautiful video, very touching... Thanks so much for sharing this. Your playing is unbelievable by the way. Incredible sound, lines and musicality. Thanks for this powerful message.
I can really feel the love and the utmost respect to the guy in your words… that experience must have truly been life-changing… please continue your beautiful path of music, honoring the Maestro and bringing us Joy and pleasure for the heart and the mind 😊
I only just found your channel and this video now, thank you for sharing this story. As a classical violinist it is only too familiar! Hope you’re putting the enjoyment of music above everything else! Love your playing.
Such a great story and perspective you share. Great music makes the world a better place and you & Allan both have shared your gifts and talents for good.
Thanks for sharing your personal stories about Allan. Hearing Allan changed my life forever. You are doing a great job of keeping his memory alive in music.
Gr8 video and story Evan. my introduction to A.H. was in 1985 with metal fatigue. I'd been playing since I was 14 in 1976, and the album blew me away, took me in a whole new direction for a few more years to about 1992 when I was 30. I decided that the musicians life wasn't happening for me, and I'd already been in high tech since 1977 so I sold all of my equipment for pennies on the dollar and rededicated myself to me alternate (but very profitable) tech career. its only been over the last few years that I've rediscovered my old passions and noodle away the evenings more and more. everyone's directions and roads in life are different, and time is often the director our fates.
Yes! First saw him perform in 1985 opening for Jeff Lorber Fusion. He was a hard act to follow and enjoyed a bit of conversation and beers with him and pretty much over the years that was the case when I went to his gigs. Always very open and warm. There are occupations where you can be invisible go to work for years in annonimity but as a musician ultimately you have to perform not the easiest thing and something most struggle with! Keep on Evan!
Hey Evan, I was the one that filmed the one song at Alva's show room which I believe is the video you showed at 2:52. It was my first time ever seeing Allan live as well as you. I remember walking out of the venue that night in awe of the performance from you all. Little did I know it would be one of Allen's last performances. You continue to inspire me with the music that you release. Looking forward to hearing more from you and Dana or whoever else you decide to work with. If anyone is interested in watch the entire performance, here it is ua-cam.com/video/LKiq1e40CIM/v-deo.html
Haven’t gone through enough of Holdsworth solo/leader records to really comment, but *any* sideman appearance I’ve heard from him he been absolute *magic*. Any incredibly unique voice.
It's great coming back to your video Ev, after a fortnight of listening, transcribing and watching Allan play. I've had a big Allan week starting last week, at the anniversary of his passing, which hasn't stopped. Your vid gave it another personal touch. Thank you again, for sharing your experience with so much openness and honesty. Lotsa luv. Stickrad
Wow,i really like your sound.Congratulations, and your talent gave you the opportunity to meet and played with Allan.....what a lucky guy.Keep it up.Best wishes from Los Angeles California.
lovely video evan...thanks for remembering & honoring dad
There are so many of us who remember him and honor him every day. He will always be loved and we will make sure he's remembered as well.
ALLAN HOLDSWORTH = A MOST MAGNIFICENTLY UNIQUE EXPRESSIONIST , COMPOSER , INTENSE & BEAUTIFUL HUMAN
Peace
Wow: thanks for sharing - missing out to Chad and Vinnie is some kind of grand honour in itself
Why am I crying.. 🥲 beautiful video

This may be my favorite Allan story. That was beautiful. Great playing sir.

Love Allan Holdsworth and love your bass playing. Lovely video.
I met him once, in a pub in Wales. But as you said, he was a lovely guy and made time to talk to me, and I’ll never forget it.

Man, you've made me cry. Just the vision of you with Allan Holdsworth was so moving, so tender. Your soloing is beyond this dairy World. Congrats!!
A fantastic story!!!!! You were obviously the right bassist for the Allan Holdsworth gig which is why Virgil recommended you!
Absolutely amazing Evan! Thanks so much for sharing your story and of course the music as well.

Great story, Evan. You're also a total beast on the bass, 99.999% of the players out there wish they could play up to your skill level.
I got full body shivers listening. Amazing. Please keep doing this, speaking as one who also once fell into die Hoffnungslosigkeit. Allan's music goes beyond the confines of language to describe it.

We are all very happy that you said yes Evan!😃

So glad you said yes and are making videos and music. You rule!
Zabareth.
Ho man, I never knew you played with those people, top of the world artists, congrats.
Allan was truly a breath of fresh air in a guitar world, where musical clichés are abound.
Always carry it within you, you are great
wow. Evan.. very nice video....
What an incredible video! Your opening up about self doubt is SO much appreciated Evan - and along with your uplifting music - so inspirational. ❤
I've loved and marvelled at Allan's music ever since I first played Guitar Player's flexi-disc of 'Devil Take the Hindmost' - my jaw literally dropped on hearing it.
The clip of you and Allan at the end brought a tear to my eye too. btw I just can't stop listening to (your track) Waves - it's soooooooooo good!
Play on Evan!
Crying listening to this... I miss Allan so much!!! Thank you Evan for your wonderful music!

Love this story!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! And that SOLO !!!!!!!!!!!! Burning!!!! Just wow!
Thanks for sharing this beautiful story and opening about your self doubts. We need to talk a lot more about these issues. Truly inspiring.
Man i love your playing, your note choices and tone, super classy fusion. Best if luck with your projects.
Allan was special. His musical genius is way above me but he was and still is an inspiration to all of us.
Such a beautiful and touching story! Thank you so much Evan!
The human mind is so cruel, to play at this level and still have doubts is so unfair. Awesome vid :)
Men, 😢😢😢😢Thanks a lot for share this lesson of life🎉🎉🎉🎉
It's great coming back to your video Ev, after a fortnight of listening, transcribing and watching Allan play. I've had a big Allan week starting last week, at the anniversary of his passing, which hasn't stopped.
Your vid gave it another personal touch.
Thank you again, for sharing your experience with so much openness and honesty.
Lotsa luv.
