- Melissa’s Passionfruit Planting and Growing tips
- Plant in spring for autumn fruit
- Choose a grafted plant with a good growth tip
- Plant it level in the ground and don’t tease out the roots; they don’t
like disturbance
- Water in with seaweed solution and mist the foliage with a half
strength brew
- Water every day during the first week
- Water in a wide area to encourage roots to spread
- Passionfruit will twine itself around a string
- Remove any growth from below the rootstock
- Plant two vines to improve pollination
- Don’t over fertilise or over water your vines
- Regular applications of compost and seaweed solution is enough
to ensure a good crop
- Mulch well
- Pick fruit when ripe - it will fall from the vine to the ground
- Prune back to a 1m diameter crown in spring, making sure you
leave some good growing tips; it will quickly regrow and reward
with fruit.
Troubleshooting Q&A
Why is my passionfruit flowering and not fruiting?
Answer: A lack of pollinators. Best not to use insecticides, and plant herbs that attract beneficial insects.
Why does my passionfruit look sick?
Answer: It’s probably too old. They need to be replanted after about 6 years. It might also have a fungal disease if it has brown spots on the fruit or yellow mottled leaves.
How do I treat fungus?
Answer: Spraying with a horticultural oil seems to supress mites and the fungus.
How do I control fruit fly?
Answer: Use baits in areas prone to attack.

Yea I love that one dog has one very happy lucky dog
Yep..thats a gorgeous pupper right there :-)
Having grown some passion fruit from a piece of fruit I bought at the local supermarket here in Pennsylvania I'm going to attempt to grow passionfruit here in zone 6B. This video has been a fantastic tutorial and I thank you. Wish me luck!
Thanks for watching and sounds like a great plan. Good luck Chris!
I'm doing the same, also in Pennsylvania.
Passionfruit native to North America is called maypops. In PA, good luck beating squirrels to them :)
My neighbour is from Sri Lanka. She said the young leaves r used as salad in their culture, sprinkled with desiccated coconut. I will try that one day.
It's called as "kola malluma"
5:52 UAAUUUUUU, JUST LOOK AT THAT, SIMPLY BEAUTIFUL!!!!!!!!!!! 6:05 And that, just dogs being dogs, noddy, and funny too! HUGS from Portugal
Very good video thank. Could you please do a demonstration of the pruning that takes place on this vine.
Volleyball nets are great for them to climb on. Mine grew over an inch a day during rainy season!
"they don't like frost and they really don't like wind". Me in Tasmania on a rocky valley outlook exposed to the western wind "eh, she'll be right" haha
Thank you Melissa! Well done! Love your dog!
Love Passionfruit it my favorite fruit....I really want to get into passionfruit farming.
The caption for this video should be "How to make your dog happy"😄😀
Excellent video, very informative.
Really nice and informative!
Wonderful and mind blowing garden
What do you mean cut it back to the crown? I have looked up this term with no results. We have three main stems. They have been flourishing for 3 years, then an unfortunate wind storm has killed quite a few branches. We are using magnolia trees for a trellis. It's been working like a charm until the storm. I can't reach the top of the trees but try to keep the dead branches pruned off the best I can. I am in Southwest Florida, my neighbors love the passion fruit. So do the squirrels, unfortunately. I don't mind sharing but they have figured out the ripe ones are the best. Thank you for this awesome video.
Probably should of watch this video 4 years ago. We have had only one passion fruit from it. But it has grown beautifully
Better late than never! :)
Love this dog.
That was so lovely!

The video is worthy to be seen unlimited times . Thank you for your efforts. I would like to ask this question:what is the highest degree of temperature that the passionfruit can bear? What is the secret beyond the dog holding a stick all the time, have you trained him? I look forward to an answer to my first question sooer no later. My best regards. I am from iraq.

I am red passionfruit keeper here in mycountry. Red passiflora loves mild climates. 15C to 26C.
Where do u live
My favourite fruit. I've just planted a Nellie Kelly, I think the most common backyard variety. I know it's late summer but I found a great place for it on my property and just HAD to plant it. Coincidentally it's a full moon. I wonder if that will make any difference...
The dogs are so cute!!
Excellent garden. How did you prepare the cake.please explain
Wow passion

Please reply as summer months are approaching.
Videos are very informative.
Thanks.
best food in the world
I have a home vine, with two good size branches at the base. Is it possible to separate and move one of these? Maybe air-layer it?? And can you propagate from the primings?
Can you share the recipe Malish , how you make with seeds. How to use userds by themselves.
I live in Bali. Do you think I can plant my vine in a big pot (or big planter bag) and still get fruits?
What's the best root stock for grafted passion fruit please?
We have lots of passionfruit in our yard, but my mom pluck and just throw it away, now I'm realising the uses of this precious fruit.. I'm gonna grow it in my garden 😇
you can eat the flowers too
.@@knowledgewillincrease7508 Then you have no fruit. Silly to do.
@@linmal2242 True but you don't have to eat them all and they are eaten for Medicinal Use, Good for sleep and more..
@@knowledgewillincrease7508 What you are talking about is Passiflora Incarnata, Blue Passionflowers, in some Areas of the world its smoked and has effects like Cannabis.
Funnily enough, my 2-3 year old passionfruit started flowering since lunar new year. Maybe its the full moon, or maybe its the rain.
lunar new year is ''the first/ the head of the month'', that's when there's a new moon
''mid month, the 15th day'' on the lunar calendar is when there's a full moon, hence the mid-autumn festival---where people would look at &appreciate the full moon, and celebrate their bontiful harvest
Loved your video.. would you expand more on the seaweed compound you use. Can I just extract this from collecting seaweed myself. I live on Vanc Island .. so? Thanks so much.
Chop up your sweed and soak it in a drumm. Then dilute and spray/water in.
Lin Mal thank you . I appreciate you sharing this. Norine
How often do I use liquid seaweed, daily, weekly?
I have grown mine from seed😁
Nice, passionfruits are true to type, that means the seeds you planted will give the same fruit as the mother.
@@easygrows2699 yes they will! One of my plants died after 3 years i dont know if that is a good lifespan or not.
the ones i grew from seed never flowered once
That’s the dog that’s picking up sticks.
My zone is 9 - 11 and I buy a small plant on z
Summer and by fall I had flowers everywhere the plant was uncontrolled!!!!
Then my step dad kill it, the end 🙃
Would like to know what kind of seaweeds they fertilize?
Do you know if all the kinds of passiflora, are suitable for food?
*is that cake? What you do to it? In last scenes*
How do you prune and could you please make a video
Is that a passionfruit cake? What's the recipe? It looks yummy!!
Indeed
iam sorry for my folt iwant thank you for your information thank you
Help planted two different Passion fruit in very large pots. Full of good looking leaves, growing well. Came out today to find..... all leaves gone. Still have steams . Help please
She said to plant two vines at home - do they have to be the same variety? I have Panama Red but I'd like to get a Nelly Kelly.
They don't have to be the same variety.
I have a huge problem with gophers so I'm growing my plants in pots for now .. they are only about 8 inches tall .. does anyone have any suggestions to get rid of gophers ?
I live in Arkansas zone 7b, I bought a non hardy snow queen variety. I plan on putting it in the ground but can I take up up in the winter to save it? We get snow and cold temps here.
You can prune back passionfruits pretty substantially I think. Look into it first but you could probably cut it back enough to fit in a tree blanket and string it up with a few strands of christmas lights for warmth.
If my passionfruit vine doesn't start producing in the next year, my eclectus parrot is going to the farm!
Passionfruit doesn't need a year o fruit. Me and my grandma planted a passion fruit from a small cutting and it flowers in 8 months
I plant my passion fruit but it does not produce fruits
@@nelsontan8328 I had the same problem with my first passionfruit. Lots of flowers, but no fruit. The flowers kept dropping off. Discovered that I needed to hand pollinate it with a paint brush and then I got fruit. It was a black seed grown variety from Bunnings. I eventually got sick of hand pollinating and pulled it out. I put in a Nelly Kelly grafted one and a seed grown variety from my grandparents that I knew would self pollinate. Have had no problems since.
Hello! Do you have any ideas/suggestions for if passion fruit will grow in a container garden? I live in Los Angeles and know passion fruit will grow here (my old apartment had some planted in the garden) however, I'm not sure if it will do well in containers. (My current apartment doesn't have a garden, but I have a patio on the top floor that gets plenty of sun)! Any thoughts or suggestions would be appreciated! Cheers!
John McMahon If you have a large container, 20 gallon pot, it should do well. All it would need is an organic fertilizer and regular watering
Thanks so much, @@elginb ! I can definitely do that. I've had them on the porch and been watering regularly and they have been growing quickly. I'll be sure to keep in mind the ultimate size container I'll need!
Did yours succeed in pots?
@@sharronharding8112 - somewhat. :) I haven't gotten fruit from the plants yet - but they're growing strong and healthy. I expect fruit this year or next. Very excited!
What kind of passion fruit I can grow in Uk I love this video very nice
What does "cut the crown back to a metre diameter" mean? What is the crown of the plant? Would have loved a bit more info there.
In the United States, crown is usually referring to the root cluster but I believe in Australia they are referring to the branching canopy diameter from the trunk
Talk about a good boy
My passion plant has flowers that are tuning yellow and fall out .... any help .... or suggestion ....
Not getting properly pollinated is the most common reason. You should handpollinate your flowers, i did this too and had some of the most delicious maracujas :D
Easy Grows that must be delicious. Can you plant maracujas in a pot?
@@ygmarte5884 yes, we can !!! It works very well.
how many months start fruiting passion fruit from seed
i haven't seen fruit on the ones that grew from seed, two years now. bought and planted a grafted one 3 months ago, it's now spring and i'm getting flower buds
What was that dish?
I so want that dog's life... hahahahaha
Hi im Filipino i have red yellow grapes fruits in front of my house it's my first to plant... what should i do now its more that 3 meters and i put a bamboo for scattering ng branch... do i nee d to change it.. and do i need to pruning to bearing fruits
Im sorry but this is the wrong place to comment this, look for grape growing videos and question there, you will get your answer there
Can it be growing in hot weather?
Yeah people grow it in Arizona you just have to water it
I have 2 healthy plants of Passiflora caerulea ("blue passionflower") here in Texas. They have beautiful blooms, but no fruit - even after 2 years. Any advice in regards to fertilizing? I pick off the Gulf Fritillary larvae and eliminate them manually. The plants are growing in clay soil with little possibility of "good drainage", so I am working with what I have. Of course, it is Spring here.
Ryan, I have noticed that the blues passion will fruit it is cross pollinated with a different variety.
Passiflora Caerulea does make fruit, but its taste is awful, if at all unedible. It makes a small orange peeled fruit, with bright red flesh inside which tastes horrible(ive tasted it). Its actually a Passionflower rather than a Passionfruit. You have to handpollinate the 3 pistils, then you will get fruit. But i would advise you to plant Passiflora Edulis forma Edulis, or forma Flavicarpa, or Purple Possum variety.
@@easygrows2699 Thank you!! I was suspecting that Passiflora Edulis would be better. Now I see that Passiflora ligularis (Granadilla) is what I really wanted. It produces delicious fruit. I would not grow P. caerulea in the future.
Is ok to grow passion fruit on wire netting fence
Yes, but pruning will be hard work.
Do I have to prune after fruiting
Yes prune right back to the ground
😁😁😁
Will it grow in Melbourne metro area ?
I live in Scandinavia and managed to grow passion fruit plants from seeds, don’t let the climate hold you back. Try it out ;)
If I had my time again (in my garden) I'd plant in large pots (or bags) so the root system is restricted. They throw up rootstock type of useless growths all over the place which need removing, so the roots must travel a fair way.
Happy doggie
Hi can I havea recipe cake please
6:05 Doggy be like "YUCK"
Can we contact this farm to get info on the trellis construction?
Plenty of sites show how to make hops yards like this. Looks similar, these are just shorter.
The runners have taken over my yard, even growing up through asphalt. How in the hell do I kill this thing?
that's the spirit
Now imagine what it does to Rainforests when its left to spread.
Eat The leaves
Mine get eaten by possums ☹️. The young new growth
Catch the small ones, cut their tails off and sell it to the Chinese,
current price is 55 dollars a gram for each tail.
And - the possums won´t come back.
Try sprinkling the area with blood and bone

I have one passion fruit but is not look like your plant or any other passion fruit just street growing up 😳😳😳😳😳do you know why?
I growing inside my flat in big pot and have lots of natural sunlight
Theres so many varieties of Passionflowers, its really hard to tell without knowing the color of the flowers. And people dont seem to know, Passionflower is not = Passionfruit.
Great segment, but definitely do not spray leaves with fertiliser
seaweed is not a fertilizer
فاشىن غخع بخق شمم امهن غخعق قثحخقفشل
DO NOT ! put water on the leaves it burns the tree
