In Mass Effect 2, right at the start, walking through the catastrophically damaged Normandy, music and alarms blaring, opening a door into the vacuum of space, and complete silence... I got chills.
The return from Guarma in RDR2, when "May I? Stand Unshaken" played blew me away. It perfectly portrayed the defeat felt upon returning to the US with even less than any other time in the game.
Seeing Hyrule Field for the first time in Ocarina of Time. The camera sprawling, showing the, at the time, enormous world with the music playing.
Finally reaching Hela’s domain in Hellblade!!
The sense of scale in seeing Hela; the endless white space contrasting the oppressive darkness of the whole game; the sheer emotional recoil of the last couple levels! Whether it’s from the beauty or the anxiety, it’s definitely breathtaking!
Climbing your first Tallneck in Horizon Zero Dawn. This was the moment that made me fall in love with the franchise.
My immediate first thought with this was the moment you leave the vault in Fallout 3. The screen being blinding white because you've never seen the sun first-hand, and then as your eyes adjust, the wasteland coming into view and all this emptiness stretching out before you. One of the best lighting effects I can remember in gaming.
And honestly, that opening FMV in the original FF7 is one of those that just sticks with people of a certain age. I remember first seeing it over my friend's house, him turning the lights off so we can watch it like it's a movie scene, and all of us just like "Holy crap, this is amazing." Things have come so far since then and the visuals have gotten better, but the feeling never went away.
And yes, I have to agree with a number of other comments: The bathysphere in Bioshock. Coming around that corner and seeing the city of Rapture spreading out in it's impossibility at the bottom of the ocean is an all-time great.
Another moment not included here. The Ghost of Tsushima title card sequence.
for real, been gaming since nintendo 90s and this moment lives rent free in my head. literally made me pause in awe.
Thanks for mentioning this. I just started playing again last night and it still hits me in feels when the music starts and riding through the field on your horse. Masterpiece!
Just some of my unforgettable moments:
- Lich King fight and the scripted event at 10% hp, WOW WotLK
- Battle for Shattrath cinematic, WOW WoD
- seeing the Citadel for the first time, ME1
- Johnnys "It's been a good day Valerie/Vincent" in the Phantom Liberty Ending, Cyberpunk 2077
- Vesemirs death, WItcher 3 (actually it's the bath scene in Witcher 2 ...)

Similar to Red Dead Redemption, there's a moment in Days Gone in which Deacon and Boozer are on the road to a place, and it's a shifting moment in the story. During the trip, they're chating about life and stuff, then "Soldier eyes" starts playing. It's a well constructed scene and the song makes perfect sense due to Deacon's past and how it shaped his personality
Bioshock 1 & 3 world reveals were incredible.
Assassin's Creed 2 when Minerva looks statraight at the camera and addresses Miles was a huge WTF at the time.
The openeing sequence of death stranding, and first time you cleanse a check point in Control (watching the oldest house shift and everything) are both visually stunning moments
It's only short but the Forward Until Dawn dropping down out of orbit and flying across the desert to come to a stop above you in Halo 3 was jaw dropping as a kid and still just as impressive now, the music, location and special were all 10/10
Leaving Vault 101 in FO3. Walking out of Fort Hagen and seeing the Prydwen and its fleet arrive in the Commonwealth in FO4. The wonderful realization that you could look up, unlike other first person shooters at the time, in Dark Forces.The train level at the beginning of Uncharted 3. Your first view of Rapture in Bioshock.
My personal favorites would be exiting the starter dungeon in Oblivion and entering Tamriel for the first time and leaving Vault 101 and entering the Washington Wasteland.
I personally found the 1st time going to the Citadel in Mass Effect was incredible. Another moment will be leaving Earth in Mass Effect 3, having to leave earth and adding that sad piano music really hits hard especially when you get into space and see all the debris of what was once Earth's defense, its sad and impactful.
Another i will like to point out is Rean having full control of his Ogre powers in Trails of Cold Steel 2, we had a taste of it in the 1st game but it was the 2nd game that allowed us to fully use it.
Entering the Las Vegas level in Horizon Forbidden West was another unforgettable one for me.
Skell test flight in Xenoblade X. Getting a Skell was awesome, but the test flight was stunning. You pilot a new prototype skell and are tasked to fly to the highest point of the first map. Don't Worry is playing in the background as you rise higher and higher, seeing the whole area growing smaller and smaller until you reach the peak, look around and realise how massive the world is, and now it's your playground.
Quantum break's bridge scene is another one where you just go "woaaah.." and Detroit; Become human's scrapyard segment where you crawl around as Marcus is obscenely disturbing in a creep under your skin way
Leaving the sewers in Oblivion and the journey to Rapture in Bioshock. 😊
THIS! I'd pick anything from this top10 list for these two moments.
Clicked on the video wondering if BioShock was on here, because that first time you see Rapture man... Whoo.
How is Bioshock not on the list? All three games are loaded with amazing moments.
An underrated and criminally not talked about moment comes from Starcraft 2 Legacy of the Void. Artanis is with Raynor after a battle, beside a row of rifles with dog tags. As Raynor looks at one, Artanis asks, "Did you know this warrior?"
Raynor replies, "No. But I know his story. I know all their stories."
It moves me even now thinking about it.
The beginning of Resistance 2 when you emerge from the bunker in the second level and the entire enemy fleet is in the sky above slowly moving by is an incredible moment
The Reaper invasion in Mass Effect 3 lives rent free in my head.
The simple opening of Breath of Fire 2 where the song Memories play as you go looking for your sister 8n black and white brings a wave of nostalgia as the symphony blossoms and the color fills the world around you. One of my fondest memories of gaming.
I'll never forget the first time you get flown over the wall to Anor Londo in Dark Souls 1
For me the best Last of Us moment is when Ellie has escaped from the cannibal,Joel finds her,hugs her,and calls her "baby girl",just like his daughter. It was at that moment that everything changed: the characters,the dynamic,the story,everything.
I think that dark cloud 2 impacts me the most. I remember watching the waves on the beach while i fish... watching sunsets and sun rises in different dungeons.
Ff8 opening made my blood pumping. Persona 4 made me cry happy tears. Crash 2 was the first platform that i beat. Of course, that led to more platforms. Ratchet and clank series while didn't have visual impact (don't get me wrong...they are impressive) but an emotional one. The series is like visiting a pair of old friends. It is bittersweet when you have to say goodbye, but you can't wait to meet them again to hear (play) about their next adventure.
Dark Cloud 2 is still one of my favorite games to this day. And that opening theme just has had me hooked for decades.
In my opinion, as much as I love stepping foot onto Alpha Halo for the first time in Halo CE, I'd say the Prepare to Drop cutscene in ODST is absolutely amazing
The stained glass scene in El Shaddai.

Mine is still the Aerith death scene from the OG FFVII. I can still see the scene pay out in my head all these years later.
May be recency bias but Herald of Darkness in Alan Wake 2. If you managed to play that section before everybody started talking about it then you remember just how perfectly strange it was for everyone to break into a recap musical. It was fun, it was goofy and it was brilliant! Also the song is an absolute banger
The entire ending sequence in ABZU. Especially grabbing onto a blue whale and jumping out of the water. I don't know how many times I said 'WOW!' out loud. Absolutely beautiful.
Most breathtaking moment for me has to be in The Legend of Dragoon.
When we get our first cutscene of the Dragon Campaign, it starts in this dark building/temple. Then eventually the character (no spoilers) flies up through the midair battle and suddenly breaks through the clouds to see the absolutely awe-inspiring view of Kadessa (the ancient wingly city in the sky). The music softens for a moment before you dive back into the action, but that brief moment was just incredible. Always takes my breath away
The death of Arthur in RDR2 will always make me cry 😭😭😭
Limgrave is 5 seconds of graphical beauty before you're cut down by the tree sentinal and instantly humbled.
FFXIV Shadowbringer, the scene where Tsleen is transformed into a Sin Eater while Halric stares on blank faced. Then realizing she is the first mini boss in Holminster Switch, the first dungeon of the expansion. Especially if you take Alisae with you in a trust party because Alisae has to fight and kill a friend.
Another is Rost carrying baby Aloy past all the machines on his way to the cliff for the naming ceremony.
On my first play-through of The Last of Us; I had to take a break from the game when I came across the Giraffes! I thought for sure someone was going to come in and start killing the Giraffes and I just didn't have the heart to experience that after what I had already experienced in the Game. It was months before I went back and finished the Game! I hadn't realized the end was so near!
The moment in video gaming that gets me is the FF7, FF8, and FF7 remake intros :3
The vistas and landscapes you mentioned in those games are grand to see especially for the first time. I have to mention Elder Scrolls Online (ESO) From The Aliki'r desert. With it's sprawling desert, including rolling hills and ruins as well as abandoned castles. To Gratwood's immense wooded area. Spanning from a central tree. Reminiscent of Avatar's "Tree of Souls" the varied "zones" AKA different biomes. Are truly a sight to see for the first time.
Late 90s and witnessing sephiroth murder aerith built walls walls around my heart.
RDR2 ride back to Beaver Hollow near the end. Or the Lenny mission.
The end of Brothers and A Plagues Tale Requim😭😭
MGS 3 Climbing The Ladder with the theme playing quietly as you climb. Sticks in my mind anyway.
Keep in mind I say this having gotten a literal siren tattoo full sleeve tattoo.
When Lilith phase walks sanctuary, chills! Played her first go and was amazing arc to see.
Opening of AC 2. (roof top climbing with your brother).
THAT final action in Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons,
Ginso tree in Ori and the Blind Forest
Walking out the Vault in Fallout 3
Seeing your first Supermutant / going to the Glow / meeting the Master in Fallout 1
Working out your first environmental puzzle in The Witness (i.e. not the screen based ones)
Surprised no Uncharted moments were in here. My favourite ever gaming moment was in Uncharted 3 and you've just been saved by Elana and you're driving through these lush green fields with swelling music that gave me ALL THE FEELS!
Probably a niche one..
But I suppose, the train crash in Uncharted 2 at the start of the game is another (less niche) moment!
The opening scene of Mass Effect 2. The Normandy a drift limping after a surprise attack. You, as Sheppard have to walk through the Command deck in the dead silence of space to get Joker off the ship. There is a massive hole in the hull above your head and you can see the blue white of the planet that will be the final resting place for the SSV Normandy SR1 and many of her crew. I stare out every time.....
If you want sadness, Before Your Eyes is one of the toughest. Even hearing the title makes me tear up.
People say Zelda mechanics are amazing but I don't see that. Sure wet people attract lightning, fire keeps you warm, etc but diving that high into water with no damage...unreal!
Stepping out into the world for the first time Elden Ring>>>
Or entering the final boss room/transition to phase 2
Ghost of Tsushima title sequence, Aerith's death, first time playing Gokden Eye, reveal of Rapture, reaveal of the wasteland in Fallout 3, Finding Altair's body in AC Revelations.

TLOU for me. Whole game is just pure emotion but the giraffe scene will always be the one for me.
Dead space: first time stepping onto the bridge of the Ishimura.
My first Holy S**t moment in gaming was probably the level of destruction in Red Faction and then Mercenaries.
In all 3 Mass Effect, when you arrived at the citadel the first time
Those giraffes die when winter comes around since they're probably not suited for such a cold climate.
So why have they obviously survived every winter before that then? Or do you think Giraffes grow from birth to full adulthood in less than 12 months?
The giraffe scene literally had me laughing at how ridiculous it was. Nobody who has spent a winter in Denver would believe for a second that Giraffes would survive there. Art design was great, but it broke immersion for me in a big way.
They're migrating through, not living there.
Halo reach the moment u blow up the corvette and Jorge sacrifices himself only to see more ships pop up as u fall to reach and watch the covent in full force whip out the population
Uncharted 4 has some beautiful locations that are an impressive sight

I actually did feel genuinely bad after I killed the first colossi because of their lack of Defense

The build up to TLOU giraffe scene, after winter scene ellie being distant her dropping the ladder being genuinely concerned for her, then the giraffe scene its such a solidly executed scene ❤❤

aw come on - nier automata: being helped by people who sacrificed their savegame jsut to be asked to do the same
totk was kind of a disappointment to me. dont get me wrong, the game was fun, but with the amount of time they spent making it, it felt like a DLC than a new game. id rather them using that 7 years to create a whole new experience for the switch 2, than making what they did. it was still fun, but i always wondered "what if"
