  • Our Carnatic Music has been enriched by the compositions and the inspiring lives of many composers.
    The nucleus of this star , formed many many centuries back, was increasing in effulgence with each century and reached a peak during the 1700s with the advent of The Trinity of Carnatic Music
    Sri. Shyama Shastri, Sri. Thyagaraja Swami and Sri Muthuswamy Dikshitar .
    A confluence of spiritual thought and Bhakthi that abounded in our country and the sheer genius of these composers saw an era that was very well demarcated. This is a humble attempt to help Students and Rasikas dwell on the greatness of their compositions and lives.
    A vast volume of literature, painstakingly penned by many dedicated authors, is available. The salient points of which have been invaluable in the preparation of this episode.
    We are aware of the fact that, the sheer volume of the achievements of the Musical Trinity is exhaustive. How much ever we try, there still would be areas which need elaboration.
    I am indebted to Sri Venkaiya Raja and Anagha Nadig for all the hard work in putting this together.

    Ma'am, Can you do elaborate session with just one raga say, Mohanam and give a sample of all genres in Carnatic music ? Not just RTP or Keertana but Swarajati, Thillana, Jatiswaram and scores of other types - may be in two parts with each genre for 5 minutes. This will be a contribution to the Raga Devathai herself! I think that will be a complete Carnatic world tour and not just a journey! :)

    Akka, is there any difference between pUrvikalyANi n gamakakriya.. name alone varies between Tygarajar n dikshitar composition . Will be happy if u share those details too.. sorry for my ignorance

    • @gvcarnaticmusic

      Namaskrams . I spoke to some elders in this regard and i got the following answer. The use of s r g m d s is typical of Gamakakriya and srgmpdps is common in Poorvikalyani. This is why the prayogams in Dikshitar Parampara are different . Esp in Meenakshi memudam Dehi.
      There are some unique prayogas in the Dikshitar patadaras. I will see if i can sing a song and load it in the glossary.

    Namaskaram Akka, one question. Is there a specific reason why Shyama Shastri has composed so many krithis in Aananda Bhairavi? Was he one of the foremost to explore this raga? Thank you 🙏🏼

    • @gvcarnaticmusic
      @gvcarnaticmusic  4 роки тому

      Anandabhairavi is said to have been dealt with only as a folkish Raga till then, I have read that Shyama Sastrigal used the henceforth unexplored contours of this Raga and made it a classical master piece using this raga in many kritis. I will try to add this info from my book in the glossary within a couple of days.

    Shyamudu sang mostly on Devi / Kamakshi. Do we have other deity krithis which are not popular ? Just curious.

    • @gvcarnaticmusic
      @gvcarnaticmusic  4 роки тому

      He sang on Brigadamba of Tanjore and Pudukotai, Neelayatakshi of Nagapatnam and Madurai Meenakshi ( Navaratna Maalika) too.. As he was engrossed in the Puja of Kamakshi being his family niyamam and inheritance his travel may have been restricted is my Thought on this .

    Namaskarams Akka... Could you pls briefly touch upon on different Pancharathnam like Kovur, Srirangam, et all... how those were grouped and was it Sri Thyagaraja Swami himself grouped or by his Desciple’s...

      What a lovely question . These Kshetra kritis were sung by swamigal when he visited the kshetra so yes they were kind of grouped as they were composed as far as I know. Also in the next episode we have covered some of his illustrious disciples who welcomed him to their Towns and sing the praise of the dieties in those temples . Kovur , Lalgudi pancharatnams were all born thus.

    Also, can you experiment the solfa notes with different frequencies? that is sing ri solfa with ga frequency in a popular geetham like vara veena - eg: ga ga pa pa - sing ga frequency pitch only but utter ma ma dha dha...is that something very polluting? I am trying to understand why the solfa syllables sa, ri, ga, ma..etc carry so much value in carnatic (not just because it has its origins in animals)....there has to be some more reason...
