Great episode Nigel! This goes to show us all how we need to be patient, make some tough decisions that will make the end result worth the risk, and wait. I like the character of the trunk on this tree and it should look great with even more time. Love it!
The root system looks so much better now! Can't wait to see it with a nice jabari one day. Isn't that what we bonsai growers love? imagining and picturing how good it will one day be?
So impressed at how quickly that has developed. It was not happy when it arrived in your care haha. That said - they're great trees so it was a good gift to receive
You have your own rythm for growing bonsai. I find myself trying to grow the most vigorous tree possible before doing this type of work. I would have simply repotted it pruning out any rot and focused on getting it vigorous to hard prune later.
thanks for my breakfast :) Love the pot..... :) very interesting ....Having my "fat' cuttings with no "nebari" at all; one of them is basically the base of a 8 years old trunk; it looked like a piece of wood at first ! NEVER thought it would actually root out !!
I love this style of showing the development through the years! Please make more videos like this. My big question for this particular tree is that it seems to be developing strongly to the right, especially with those two new branches. Do you have a plan to compensate for this or are you just going to wait and see what happens? Cheers, and Happy New Year, Chris
They grow roots easily, but the roots can quickly grow out of shape, they tend to fatten up to anchor the tree in the ground. In nature this holds the tree upright in hurricanes.
Yes, it has been working really well for all my trees. I would add some composted pine bark to the soil used for the coniferous trees. Maybe 10 to 20 percent.
I have been looking at Ficus, cuz they are nice little trees. I read that they dont like to be moved around a lot. That really doesnt suit me. Anyone know how serious this issue is?
I have a tiger bark Ficus and they can handle pretty much anything in my experience. Better not to move them around too much either, but mine has handled it really nicely the last few years

The master of making great root systems
All those looks back in time are really interesting. Your channel now has so many trees with detailed progression on record and it's awesome!
Hi Nigel, really been enjoying your update series, look forward to it everyday

Nice to see how this former stone age tool is slowly developing into a tree.👍
I really like what you’ve been doing with the look back at the development of the trees . They’re amazing tutorials to be able to access. Thanks
The tree is looking so much better than it did, when you got it. I'm liking it!
A great job you did there. The development of the roots is really very impressive. The rest will be there too, I'm sure of you.

27F here in Chicago, cloudy and a great morning to watch a great bonsai video with a cup of tea.
I like how you included the history of tree in this video. 😊👍✂️🌳
Looking good! I learn so much from watching these videos. Thank you!
Another very satisfying video! The tree will be a gem in no time!

Really unique ficus there
Bonsai is a time play game and you are doing a fantastic work with your Natal Ficus. I'm looking forward to see its future. Congrats.
Wow! The Ficus has come a long way, as much as you are hectic with the root pruning it was necessary, well done!
Magnificent little tree.
Looking better already. 👍
This is what I love to see! Chop those roots 💪

It appears your bold approach proved right!
Hi Nigel, I like the Bonsai Zone t-shirt. I figured it would be red though. That little Natal is looking very nice.
Good work Nigel..inspiring🤩
beautiful, art!
Neat evolution!
You love your. African trees very interesting to see what people outside Africa do with ouer trees keep well from south africa
Thanks Micheal, I love the African trees!

Is that a Bonsai Zone T shirt? I could go for a few (dozen) of them. Is there a link?
I think your right. That root looks cool now but will cause problems later.
Thanks Ellis and you are Foist tonight!

Hi Nigel, do you have a video explaining the benefits of root pruning and why it helps the tree?
Loved watching your video.
I do, so here you go....

Root system has grown really healthy , whats ur furture plan for this tree, an umbrella canopy?
Nice!
Very interesting, are ficus difficult to root prune because of the roots?
They grow roots easily, but the roots can quickly grow out of shape, they tend to fatten up to anchor the tree in the ground. In nature this holds the tree upright in hurricanes.
I wonder if you would get another tree from an areal root? Might be worth a try to see if a nice tree would develop from it.
See my missed this video
You must build one more plant room heh
Do you still like turface/perlite mix for your bonsai soil? Do you also use that for conifers?
