#NHL #Relocation
Thanks for watching fellas!!
Thanks for posting! Love the videos
Also, could you make a part 2? This was extremely interesting, cuz I knew nothing about this stuff happening
As a Houstonian, I remember when the Oilers almost moved down here. It was funny considering we lost the football Oilers to Tennessee a couple years earlier. Headlines would have been like.
THE OILERS ARE BACK! Sorta.
😂😂😂
Honestly houston would of fall in love with the oilers.
Glad it didn’t happen. Not saying Houston doesn’t deserve an NHL team (you do), just not my beloved Oilers.
I was a teenager at the time, and spent a lot of nights crying and praying that the Oilers stayed in Edmonton.
Imagine that, the Houston Oilers in hockey
Another fun fact about the Saskatoon Blues move, or lack thereof, it was the actually the ownership group of the Blackhawks that fought to keep the Blues in St. Louis. They spearheaded the movement to keep the Blues here because of how great St. Louis was
That almost happened in football. The Steelers and Bengals ownership groups were the only ones to try and block the Browns being moved to Baltimore.
It was also the Blackhawk ownership that helped St.Louis get the franchise back in 1967. The final 2 spots were down to St.Louis and Baltimore. But Bill Wirtz owned the depleted St.Louis Arena because St.Louis was Chicago’s minor league affiliate at the time, and he wanted it off his hands. So the Blues ownership group said they’d buy the Arena from Wirtz if they would convince the other owners to vote for St.Louis as the final of the ‘67 expansion teams.
@@Pensfan5919So was the ownership of the Washington football team because they didn't want another team in the state of Maryland
Imagine being handed the reigns to a dog food company, and an NHL team, and your more excited about the kibble. That's dedication, I guess...
Pet food Industry worth like $87B so I get it.
I'd take the dog food company any day. Consistent, evergreen income from a business that will always be in demand, vs. an American hockey team that may or may not lose you a lot of money in a given year.
@@theevilascotcompany9255 hindsight really is 20/20. Minimal loss of revenue in the pet food industry during a global pandemic
@@occams_chainsaw True, but you don't need hindsight to figure that a company that deals in commodity-like products is going to have more consistent business than a major league sports franchise, especially an American hockey team.
Ralston-Purina didn’t just make Dog Chow back then. Before the division was spun-off and then sold off to General Mills in the late 90s, they also made breakfast cereals. Chex and Cookie Crisp? They were originally produced by Ralston-Purina.
I remember the Blues almost relocated to Saskatoon and when the NHL intervened and said no. I didn’t know about Edmonton and Toronto what they could have been. These are great videos as the past can be revisited. Thanks for showing
Ironically the cup winning blues team had like 13 players from Saskatchewan!!!
If only
It was three (Bozak, Schwartz, and Schenn), but they also have Kelly Chase and Bernie Federko still in town and close to the organization.
The North Stars almost moved to the San Francisco Bay Area in the late 80s. The NHL instead allowed the owners, who were the former owners of the Oakland Seals/Cleveland Barons before it was absorbed into the North Stars, to sell the team and gave them an expansion team in that market.
Long story short: The San Jose Sharks are the yes-it-is-no-it-isn’t phoenix club of the Oakland Seals.
Fun Fact for Tkachuk: In 1995, Nashville tried to get the New Jersey Devils to relocate to Nashville after a lease dispute happened with their arena, they were offered $20 million as a relocation bonus if they were to move.
Realistically? The devils used the offer to get terms they liked in NJ.
Winning the Stanley Cup that year kept the team in New Jersey winning cures everything
Nashville Devils...nah that is cursed 😭💀
I remember during the Balsillie Nashville thing there was a lot about how existing owners have to approve new owners - that a majority of the NHL governors had already declared they'd vote against Balsillie joining their ranks.
Man you could make an entire video about every time Peter Pocklington threatened to move the Oilers. Heck even when Darryl Katz bought the team they tried to use Seattle and Hamilton as a threat in trying to get a new arena.
one team you missed was Vancouver before a built what is now Rogers arena back then it was known as gm place they were struggling to get an arena deal and were pretty close to moving to Portland just thought I'd throw that out there🤔
It's funny how the Coyotes almost went 1st to Minnesota from Winnipeg and then nearly returned to Winnipeg before the city bought the Thrashers. The Northstars nearly became the LA Stars until a deal was done to move to Texas to leave Disney the new Anaheim franchise instead.
Great video man! I never knew the blues missed a draft pick over some crass ish 😂👏
The coyotes did move…..into a 5000 seat arena 😆😆😆😆😆😆😆😆
Don Cherry went on Hockey Night In Canada somewhere around 1986 and said the Blues were "signed sealed and delivered" to Hamilton lol. Even when he said it on live TV everyone in Hamilton knew somebody or something was going to screw us out of a team, whatever team it might have been lol. The best though was the NHL guaranteeing a team IF an arena was built. Of course one was built, 18,500,000 seats later and the NHL expanded 3 teams but Hamilton got left out lol. We all knew Toronto and especially Buffalo blocked our bid but what a disgrace lol
Hell yeah , once again another amazing upload dude you’re awesome 🍻 hopefully hockey gets back to normal soon sick of these postponed games lol
What a lot of hockey fans refuse to understand is, that just because Hockey is a Canadian sport and rooted there, American markets will almost always be a more attractive destination for the NHL. This is a Major league. Canada has a smaller population than California does. There's way more money to be made in the US where you can spread and grow the game more than you can in Canada. Way more untapped potential, way more people, way more money, and a stronger economy. That's why places like Quebec city, Hamilton, and Saskatoon will almost always lose out to American markets. It's also why Houston is next in line for a team at the moment. The Houston Metro area alone has almost as many people as the entire province of Quebec, and people actually think the NHL would rather go back to Quebec city where a team already failed? Makes no sense.
And Montreal really missed an opportunity. They could have approached the NHL about buying the rights to the Quebec Nordiques name, and made so much money off of that- plus, they could've put their AHL affiliate in Quebec City, call them the Nordiques, and it would've been a win-win situation. An entire generation of fans in Quebec City has grown up as Montreal Canadiens fans, and rebranding their AHL franchise as "the Quebec Nordiques" would give the Centre Videotron a stable client. Also, they'd be the most popular AHL club,as merchandise sales, both in and out of Quebec would go through the roof
I was in the middle of a hockey tournament when you posted this amazing vid
Thanks man!!
You should do a video recapping the last few seasons and going into detail about everything a new fan should know that is trying to become a big hockey fan!!
I think Saskatoon needs a team and would do really well with one. We already have facilities big enough (SaskTel Centre, which has a capacity of 15,000), and the fans. Almost everyone I know is interested in hockey. The Blades and the Rush (Lacrosse) have both been doing well with attendance, sometimes with 100% capacity. Even an AHL team would be great.
Moving any team to Hamilton, ON would meet strong resistance from two teams - the Toronto Maple Leafs and Buffalo Sabres. The Maple Leafs argument is that Hamilton is in the Greater Toronto Area and the last thing they want is a team right at their doorstep potentially losing fans to the new kid in town. The Sabres don't want a team there, because they'll lose a vital fan group from Southern Ontario (Rochester and Syracuse are too small and they mostly support the Rangers). Don't know how naïve Balsille was when his chances of getting a team in Hamilton, ON were slim to none and any plans to move a team there would meet strong resistance from other teams.
I'd also have included the Flames to Portland during Calgary's awful Young Guns era. Ownership and fans were done with a poor performing team, and the NHL was in full on "grow the US market" mode.
Were it not for an aggressive season ticket push, it felt pretty likely that the Flames were moving.
If that happened, the battle of alberta would have been dead
The Oilers would have changed their name upon moving to Toronto. Had that happened, imagine how history would have changed.
Gretzky and that dynasty in Toronto flourishes. He never gets traded to Los Angeles. Messier never leaves.
If there was an NHL team in Saskatchewan the rink would be packed every game and merch would be through the roof
Super Mario...the Savior of Pittsburgh...Le Magnifique!!
I'll always remember the NHL Awards show where Ron Maclean joked that Jim Balsillie had bought the awards ceremony, and was moving it to Hamilton. The camera then went to a slightly amused Gary Bettman.
If these moves actually happened we could have had a much different NHL
It’s wild to think of an alternate NHL!!
Never heard of the Leafs/Oilers move before.
Love the content! Keep it up!
Thanks sm man!!
"Congratulations, you get to move to the greener pastures of SASKATOON?!"
-UrinatingTree from The St Louis Blues: A Legacy of Failure
"2 HOURS LATER. Never mind, the NHL came to a consensus and are forcing you to stay in St Louis."
nice touch with the last clip
The Blues were 10 days from folding
Shoutout to the boy for the amazing content!! Best hockey channel on youtube
Thank you so much!! This made my day!!
This is buck wild
Winnipeg never made sense to me. Great video. Cheers
The Atlanta Thrashers couldn’t survive where they were.
We also have the richest man in Canada who bought the team and helped finance the construction of Canada Life Centre.
Cheers
But Florida, Tampa, Carolina, Dallas and Nashville do?
Why don't current Canadian NHL teams try to put their AHL affiliates in cities that want, but can't have,NHL teams? Montreal could have theirs in Quebec City, Toronto or Ottawa could have theirs in Hamilton, one of the Alberta teams in Saskatoon...it's just practical, especially in light of the pandemic
Sounds great in theory. However...
Quebec City and Montreal are rivals. I remember hearing how an alumni game between the Habs and Nords got a record number of viewers on TV... this was a while back too. Besides, the AHL team is in Laval which is very close to Montreal as it is. Also, they would have to fight for customers with an entrenched QMJHL team in the Remparts who got 10,000 in the stands on a regular basis before the last couple of years. They were getting 6-7000 before the break this season.
Toronto's team is in Toronto (much like Winnipeg's team). Ottawa is in Belleville, ON which refreshed their arena in 2016 to get the team (they used to have the Belleville Bulls of the OHL... who coincidentally moved to Hamilton into the FirstOntario Centre (formerly named Copps Coliseum) and are called the Bulldogs like the old AHL teams... the second are the Laval team now.) They have a lease for a few more years with the city owned rink.
Edmonton has Bakersfield (the original Hamilton Bulldogs AHL team) and Calgary is in Stockton. Both are members of the Pacific Division (9 teams) which do not play any outside the division games until the Conference Finals. I think they need to stay put.
I also do not believe that a team that has a parent in Alberta would do that well in Saskatoon. There is a rivalry between Alberta and Saskatchewan and it goes to their sports teams as well. See the rivalry between the Saskatchewan Roughriders and the Calgary Stampeders (and to a degree, the Edmonton Elk previously Eskimos). The Blues would have an instant double rivalry with the Flames and Oilers. Maybe more with the Oilers since Saskatoon is northern Saskatchewan, but the Flames would be major rivals as well. Also, Saskatchewan is in the Jets TV region... not sure if that means a whole lot, but there's that.
Vancouver is near them in Abbotsford in their first season. They had Calgary before and that did not work out very well.
@@mrmoose6619 The most popular NHL team in Saskatchewan is easily the oilers. If the oilers put their farm team there the arena would be packed ever night, I guarentee.
@@iem123 I like your logic. It would allow me to bring out my OKC Barons Sweater I got when I attended school in Oklahoma, before they moved to Bakersfield.
Saskatoon is a nice place, but not a place for a big league franchise.
There never would've been an Edmonton Maple Leafs and Toronto Oilers, they would've kept the franchise name, uniform etc in the city but the owners, players, staff would all swap cities
My dad saw Wayne gretzky first home game as a blues
Good Video Paul 🔥🔥🔥
Thanks sm man!!
3:10 Very bold of Hunter to apparently not only want to move the Blues to Saskatoon, but to apparently fill the roster with dead-eyed Freddie Mercury blowup dolls...
Oilers almost moved to Hamilton in the mid 90s too
As someone who grew up in Saskatoon. Having an NHL team would have made life considerably more interesting. And also they missed out.. Here in Saskatchewan, we don't care if our teams are good or not, we will still sell out arenas and buy all the merch. Just take a look at our CFL team, the Saskatchewan Roughriders.. And their insane amounts of merch and money they make.
We love our blues
The roughriders are third in all of canada for most merch sales, only behind the maple leafs and Canadiens
I’m from Saskatoon and wish we could have had our team for longer
Wait, what? There was a team there at one point?
@Michael Scott what I mean was I wish it would have stuck around here for the short time that we were going to have one
I hope Saskatoon gets a team some day
It’ll never happen, the residents just argue amongst themselves on where to put the arena. I believe back in 2014 the city had like half a billion for an arena, and well… that was 8 years ago now - Former shittoon resident
Saskatoon's metro population is less than 300,000. That is way too small to support the NHL. The smallest NHL market is Winnipeg with over twice as many people and is also the only metro area under 1 million.
@@LeanMrfuzzles Saskatchewan is not too small at all. More than half the province loves hockey so they’d more then likely constantly be selling out. The Roughriders sell out nearly every game of more then 30’000 people. Half the nhl teams can’t even sell 10’000 seats.
The penguins tried to relocate to Kansas City around 2007 I think it was
2006 was the bid, 2007 was when they successfully got the arena deal so technically we’re both right lol
Great vid👍😂 I actually learned something new...I didn’t know about the Saskatoon Blues lol oh what could have been eh. Prob a good thing Balsille didn’t move the teams cause blackberry is a joke now lol
Oh yeah, it’s quite the legend in Saskatoon, and the arena bill hunter was talking about building. Ended being built in 1988 and still being used today
Who else got baited by the saskatoon blues
That's it that was the only team
There should be more NHL Teams in Canada as there are Markets that could definitely support one like St. John’s, Halifax, Fredericton, (it’s a crime that Quebec City doesn’t have a team again) Hamilton, London, and on the west Thunder Bay could have one, Saskatoon could, Regina could, Red Deer could and Victoria too! (Hell Montreal, Toronto & Vancouver could support 2 NHL Teams like New York City)
Just think, the Toronto Oilers would have been a dynasty in the 80s!!!! Meanwhile Edmonton would have been well, what Toronto is even to now!!! The thought is insane and funny to picture!!!!
Leafs, which control the NHL screwed Balsillie, no competition and lose revenue to a close market
Basically, and it shows you what a bunch of douches that organization is. If they don't want rivals possibly moving in,they could've put their AHL affiliate there, instead of still being in Toronto. Lord knows MLSE has more than enough money, where they could upgrade or replace the old Copps Coliseum, and put their affiliate there. They could even buy the rights to the name "Hamilton Tigers",to give Hamiltonians a sense of their own identity, make even more money, and revitalize the area around the arena,at least
@@henrymanzano9168 exactly. New York has several teams in a close proximity
@@peterfets4799 Yup. As soon as the Hartford Whalers moved to Carolina, the Rangers put their affiliate in Hartford, and they've been there ever since. Also, the Islanders' affiliate is in Bridgeport,CT, a suburb of NYC. Both teams made a smart move, and grew their own fan bases, along with expanding the rivalry to another state (although Connecticut is technically New England, they still tend to cheer for New York teams)
I can’t imagine if the blues weren’t in st.Louis … the passion… we have for our hockey club… is out of this world.. when we won our first cup.. the whole city showed out… not just the die hard fans.. st.Louis loves our sports teams!!
There were discussions of moving the Blues to Nashville since that's a blues town in terms of music and the Predators would come to St. Louis due to the number of predators there. It never happened but there were discussions between me and my dog about it
So which side came to their senses? The dog?
I had no idea the Maple Leafs and Oilers could have easily swapped cities.
I doubt there is any truth to that story.
Or the Jets going to Minneapolis
If I bought a team I would not be like him but I would be surprised if a nhl team moved to my hometown
North Stars almost to Anaheim
saskatchewan deserves a team tbh
Love the lady mannequin with a mustache lol
😂😂😂
Looks kind of like Freddie Mercury.😁
Noti gang wya 😤
🔥🔥🔥🔥
I love your vids
Thanks sm Kelly!!
Love the video
Toronto could've won more Stanley cups with a different team
With Wayne Gretzky Mark Messier and the rest I would think so
Does anybody know where the animation at 0:59 came from?
I think the Coyotes or the Predators should have moved to Hamilton, Hamilton would have ate them up
Devils to Nashville
So if Arizona doesn’t get a arena deal will they be forced to move? Or will the play where the Phoenix Suns play?
Honestly no clue. I would assume they'd move elsewhere
@@idontgivetkachuk Like Quebec
@@justinganz1173 nah, hell would freeze over before quebec gets a hockey team. They're gonna move to houston, most likely
I think if possible, they could play at Arizona Veterans Memorial Coliseum at Phoenix...
Should move yotes to saskatoon. And not only did houston lose out when edmonton ownership group came up with last minute $$$'s to keep oil there houston lost out on bid to re-locate failing cleveland barons there in '78 as well. nhl citing failure in atlanta to draw fans as reason not to put another nhl team in the south. And blues by passing on '83 draft missed out in the sixth and 27 picks. But those picks had already been previously traded away to then rockies for rob ramage (first) and habs for guy lapointe (second) in '82. Blues wouldn't have gotten a future hall of famer like yzerman or lafontaine who were gone by then but could have taken john maclean at six (nj pick) or even the guy at eight that canucks took, a future hall of famer in cam neely. If it is any consolation for blues they did use ramage as part of the '88 deal with flames to get their own future hall of famer-700+ goal scorer brett hull. And the second they gave up to habs that they used to take momesso later was traded to blues as well. Also ask yourself how isles coming off of a fourth straight cup had the third pick of the '83 draft and gave isles lafonfaine? Well thank col. rockies for that one.
Hamilton needs a team. Everytime I go it’s so empty and deserted and full of homeless people. That city is dying and needs something to bring it up
Agree but no way in Hell that The Sabres and Leafs allow that to happen!
@@dondavis7687 ye because it’s to close which sucks
@@dondavis7687 I don't think the Leafs would really care as it wouldn't hurt them even a little but a Hamilton team would bury Buffalo. Being from Hamilton we'd go to Buffalo 4 times a year to see the Habs and Gretzky if he visited Buffalo but you could never get Leaf tickets even when they were the wort team in hockey for a solid 15 years straight lol
@@K131399 ye I live in the GTA but a lot of my family is in Hamilton. Whenever the leafs play there it’s a literal home game
Kansas City really almost had Sidney Crosby and Patrick Mahomes.
Love this
Is 600 euros enough to buy a nhl team?
If it's Montreal, the answer is yes.
Great content as always and definitely some interesting ideas. It's a really good thing none of Balsillie's schemes worked out, only God knows what Capt. DingleBerry would've done to those teams. And if anyone ever really considers moving the Blues, I'm all for it. I think Antarctica would be a good fit. Or the moon. That would work, too.😁😆👍
Which team do you root for?
@@giantfactory CLEVELAND BARONS ALL THE WAY, BABY!!
@@CommodoreFloopjack78 Huh? I thought you might be a salty Dallas fan. Why the StL hate then?
@@giantfactory No, that was a joke, the Barons were a failed expansion team that folded long, long ago. Truth be told, and much to my dismay at times, I'm actually a big Blackhawks fan.
@@CommodoreFloopjack78 I honestly have no hate for the Hawks at the moment, not since they've fallen on hard times. Surprisingly, I hate the Avs and the Stars more in the division.
Love your videos just a bit of critical thinking maybe speak up a bit it’s a little hard to hear but otherwise have a great day love the videos
The audio is super loud when I record it, but I compress it all together so it sounds consistent. But thanks sm man!! I appreciate the support!
"With the first overall pick in the 2015 draft the toronto oilers are proud to select. Conner mcdavid"
I always finding it interesting when a team either moves or almost moves
3:10 Saskatoon Blues also had a theme song. I copied an ancient video (which hundreds of other UA-camrs of course pirated). "Have you heard the news, we're getting the Blues"
I wish the blues would of moved, I'd have the oilers on one side and the blues on the other, that would of made for some great rivalry.
FYI those blues jerseys are 🔥🔥🔥 they should bring them back
Nah, they're much better off where they are.
The Coyotes should move to Houston
Too late now they're done
A Saskatoon team would of been cool
TV markets made Saskatoon and Hamilton a no-go especially the way things turned out.
A winter in Saskatoon?
Well that was funny XD
Hi
Is there anyone in Saskatoon willing to pay $500,000,000 US or more for a franchise?
Who's here from Utah HC
Whalers almost to Hampton Rhodes
Arizona needs to move
I agree. The franchise has always had troubles.
NHL will don’t like team moved to Canada anymore 🤷🏼♂️
Unless it's Winnipeg.
I can see a team moving to Quebec City if the conditions are right. It would have to be an Eastern team though.
St Louis is a pretty darn small market... It's a bit of a lateral move. The NHL just didn't want a team in Canada end point.
Much bigger than Saskatoon.
Having the blues is Saskatoon would have been awesome! Maybe they can get the coyotes? (Probably not)
Balsille wasn't wrong
7:37
This Preds fan would like to chime in here and say, "fk Craig Leipold...he almost cost this city its franchise and sacrificed its assets in Kariya, Hartnell, Timonen, and Vokoun in 2007."
The NHL seems to hate Canada, would’ve been interesting with teams in Saskatoon and Hamilton
Ok guys here’s the plan, we will all donate money to me to buy the coyotes and move them to Hartford… I just had to buy textbooks so I’m pretty broke atm, we only need a couple 100,000,000 we got this 👍
KICKSTARTER, HERE WE COME!!👍
Lets do it 🔥🔥🔥
Is half a ham sandwich enough to bring back the whalers
Brilliant idea, have 18 teams in the Eastern Conference 16 teams in the Western Conference, makes sense doesn't it?
No way they would stay in the Western Conference if they moved to Hartford
They should move Montreal to Wyoming, that would be amazing
It is a shame the Blues never went to Sask because it was there only chance to get an NHL team.
I'm going to guess that you are a Sagittarius.
Why are you saying Saskatoon so weird
I’m saying it 100% normally lol. U just gotta find something to nitpick I guess
I'm so glad the blues didn't move to Saskatoon. They belong here and now they're definitely not going anywhere
Honestly the NHL does seem Anti Canada now. Them not moving new teams there does seem questionable in recent years. But the money just isn't there. Hamilton has had an NHL team wayyyyyyyyyyyyyy back in the day but, not in the last 75 years obviously. Maybe not even in the last 100.
Hamilton lost their team in 1925. 99 years and counting.
Based on how the Canadian Dollar is struggling that they should move every single Canadian based team to the United States and have Canada make their own league and besides majority of the NHL is located in America anyway
Toronto Maple Leafs > Orlando
Vancouver Canucks > Salt Lake City
Ottawa Senators > Norfolk
Calgary Flames > Portland
Edmonton Oilers > San Antonio
Montreal Canadiens > Louisville
Winnipeg Jets > Atlanta
If the Coyotes move, bet on them landing in Houston.
