  • In this 5-part series of videos, what I might normally call an 'odyssey', I present scenery from my 2-day drive on highways in the north-Colorado section of the Rocky Mountains on September 23 & 24, 2023.
First, I drove westbound on interstate highway 70 (I-70) from Denver to view some of the Grand Mesa area near the town of Palisade (just east of Grand Junction), passing through the spectacular Glenwood Canyon en route. Then I drove back eastbound on I-70, once again passing through Glenwood Canyon, as far as Silverthorne, then north on Colorado state highway 9 to Kremmling. From there, I drive eastbound on US highway 40, passing through scenic Byers Canyon, and on through Rocky Mountain National Park on US highway 34. I stayed overnight at Estes Park, then continued the second day on highway 34 through Bog Thompson Canyon, ending in the city of Loveland.
Part 1 is westbound on I-70 from Colorado highway 470 to the est end of Glenwood Canyon.
Part 2 is westbound on I-70 through Glenwood Canyon, continuing west to the Grand Mesa area near Palisade.
Part 3 is back eastbound on I-70 (through Glenwood Canyon again) to Silverthorne, north on state highway 9 to Kremmling, then east on US 40 to the southwest entrance of the national park near Granby.
Part 4 is US 34 through Rocky Mountain National Park to my hotel in the town of Estes Park.
Part 5 is eastbound on US 34 from Estes Park to the conclusion of the drive in Loveland.
Keywords: Interstate 70, I-70, Grand Army of the Republic Highway, Idaho Springs, Silverthorne, Colorado, Vail, Avon, Gypsum, Glenwood Canyon, Glenwood Springs, Silt, Rifle, Parachute, Palisade, Grand Mesa, Beavertail Mountain, Colorado 9, Kremmling, US highway 34, Byers Canyon, Rocky Mountain National Park, Estes Park

Thank you for your teaching us the video technique. I’ve tried it and it works great. It does however take a little practice. Thanks again for your hard work.

Great video series. If you would’ve stayed on US34 east, you would’ve ended up back in Chi town. It loosely follows the Cal Zephyr, Fort Morgan eastward.

Motel prices have been killer in the last three years.

Might want to google "Estes Park pronunciation" 😊

Crynolyn, I just pronounced it the way that the hotel reservationist pronounced it.
Checking online just now, I found about equal amounts of references promoting two different pronunciations. So it seems there is a general disparity in this pronuncation, not just with me.

@youtuuba I've lived in Colorado for 26 years and I've never heard any locals pronounce it the way you did in the video. Have multiple friends who grew up in Estes. My Grandmother's family had a cabin in Estes Park in the 1920's. I'm going to assume your reservationist isn't from around here. Found a thread on FB and everyone says S-tiss, including a person who's last name is Estes.

@@crynolyn, this kind of thing comes up all the time. I have visited many places where event the locals don't agree on how to pronounce their own place name. And living in the same state as a place in no way guarantees that all those people have it right either; I have lost count of how many times when people all over an area pronounce a place different that its denizens, and even the denizens have more than one pronunciation.
I just looked online again, and found at least four different pronunciations for this town. And don't count all those UA-cam "how to pronounce" videos, which are mostly 'AI bot' things of who knows what level of veracity, or else people in some far removed place who are getting monetized to record their voice pronouncing something, right or wrong. And a theatrical group I know visited Estes Park for about a week a few years back, and they all came back with a bunch of 'takes' on the pronunciation. Who's right?
Can't be too much of a concern. Even the town's official website does not address the pronunciation.

@youtuuba It sounds like you are unable to admit that you are wrong, and you're making up excuses. Has this been a pattern in your life ?

@@crynolyn , it sounds like you have the problem you accuse me of. At least I did some research and put some effort into how to pronounce the name, while all you have is what you have heard some friends say. You might still be right, but not for the reason you claim.
