    Yes, I'm fully aware that there were a few errors in this video. (Metric system, 10 yards for a kick, missed field goal is live, Alaska is not part of Canada etc.) I corrected these with annotations, which you should be seeing in the video as the errors come up. Can people please stop pointing these things out, as they appear on screen and it's visible enough to read?
    This was one of my first attempts at video production and have improved massively since 3 years ago.

      Perhaps this individuals that are pointing out these errors watched the video on a mobile device (like myself), or a system that uses the UA-cam TV app, in which annotations do not appear, so we can't read those fixes. I'm impressed with the overall quality of the video though.

    As a die hard NFL fan I can honestly say I enjoy the CFL and don't understand how a true football fan could hate it. Despite the differences it doesn't interfere with the NFL season and is a refreshing resurgence of football during the dreaded offseason. Excellent video btw as I learned a lot

      +Matt Laq I used to watch when they're were US franchises, the most successful was the Baltimore Stallions who started as the CFLColts until the NFL stopped that and were known as the CFLs, until 1995 when they were renamed the Stallions, after they won the Grey Cup, Modell moved the Browns to Baltimore, and the league pulled of the US, the Stallions became the third incarnation of the Montreal Allouttes, They became successful once they left the Big Owe and moved to Molson Stadium at McGill University.

      I dislike it because some teams refuse to run the ball in the CFL. No hard, tough, physical running game to be found in canadian football.

      ???? Please explain how RB's have 800~1,000 rushing yards seasons then? Here's the top 4 rushers from 2013, for example. It's just ignorant to say there's not a running game in The CFL. Yes, it is pass-heavy compared to the NFL. But the running game is very important for any Cup contending teams in the league; without one, teams rarely win The Grey Cup.

      It has quite a following in the US and has always been on ESPN just never publicized. My dad use to watch it all the time in the 80s when I was a kid. The CFL also had a hand in the rise of the Baltimore Ravens. When the owner of the then Cleveland Browns saw that sell out crowds were drawn to the CFL team Baltimore Stallions, he abruptly moved the original Cleveland Browns to Baltimore. So it just showed the following of football in general whether Canadian or American.

      One major aspect of the waggle is that it really changes the technique of the Defensive Backs. it is virtually impossible to jam a receiver who is coming to the line at speed and has a two way go. So DB's give the motion receivers more cushion and this makes coverage more difficult.
      It is one of the reasons why a tight end is rare in Canada Why use a receiver who is frozen until the snap? and more easily jammed.

      Ninh Ly By the way union is much better than league. Union although it might have some breaks they're aren't as long as football breaks. Also league is too repetitive and union actually is quite fast now. Just watch some six nations and compare it to state of origin. Union has more diversity as it has more kicks and passing although the hits aren't as hards. Them scrums,the mauls, the competitive rucks,and the tension leading up to a penalty goal is what makes union far better. Don't forget the classy lineouts.I've watched both league and union and those were my observations based on that and I'm American so I did not really grow up with a certain code.

I personally like smaller fields like you, i do not like higher scores since I'm more fan of the valuable scoring, i like more passing, and i also like that athletes are a little bit smaller since they are more nimble. and ofc i like that there is much more motion before the snap, however i like "Chess" like tactics that American football personally has.

      The 5 yards are given cuz of no fair catch

    • @reelkonversationswithryank4945
      @reelkonversationswithryank4945 4 роки тому +2

      "No yards for punts" is true, except for the punter and anyone else who is behind him at the time the ball leaves his foot (they are said to be "onside").
      The reason the no yards rule doesn't exist for Kick-offs is that everyone from the kicking team is behind the kicker (they are all onside). If anyone gets ahead of the kicker, they would be offside, which is not allowed, and would result in a penalty.

    • @CanuckGod
      @CanuckGod 2 роки тому

      Also, the no yards rule has changed in 2022 to where the penalty being assessed for no yards in all instance is now 15 yards, whereas it used to be more or less depending on whether or not the ball was caught off the bounce or in-air - the same 5 yard halo still applies. In reality, both American and Canadian codes have some way to protect the returner, this is just the alternative to having a fair catch.

    I've always live in the Chicago area, so my frame of reference is the NFL. But I agree that Canadian football is an interesting and lively variant with its own intrigue. Love the CFL field goal rules. For a while when I was a boy in the late 1960s, a CFL game was broadcast weekly on TV. My Dad gravitated to the Hamilton Tiger Cats because of his regard for his in-laws, the Hamiltons. Now in my early 60s I find myself pulling for the Tiger Cats. Maybe a psychiatrist can explain it all to me, but I should think it's harmless, and it is fun. I'm trying to manufacture a good reason to be in the area so I can take in a Tiger Cats game.

NFL players make so much more - so why would anyone leave that league to player in the lower-cost/lower-popularity league? - so, the talent won't be as comparable, even if the game is better in the CFL...people are sometimes corrupt, like that. take for example the Democrats vs. Republicans. one party is seriously corrupt...but, they're so well established, they can't be taken off their perch. think about Islam, and how obstinate Muslims are...they won't convert to a peaceful religion...same reasons. corrupt.

      +Nicholas Garcia It was invented first, but in its original iteration it looked a lot more like rugby union than it does today. Eventually, it adopted many of the American rules, which is why the two sports look very similar today.

    • @stonecoggins107
      @stonecoggins107 8 років тому +21

      silkentresses There is no denying that the Harvard-McGill game is very important in the history of American football, as it signaled the point that Americans began to shift away from association football type rules to rules that more closely resembled rugby union. So Canada was instrumental in introducing rugby to America. But it was an American, Walter Camp, who took those rugby-like rules and altered them to make them more closely resemble the games we know today. He was responsible for adding the line of scrimmage, down-and-distance, and blocking to the game, as well as standardizing the points system and the size of the field. Canada adopted the Burnside rules about 20 years after Camp made most of his innovations - the Burnside rules are very similar to the brand of American football that Camp pioneered.
      I'm not sure where you found that quote, but it doesn't gel with any of the history I have ever heard. I have always heard that it was Camp that reduced the number of players to 11 in 1880, several years after the Harvard-McGill game. Also, there wouldn't have been any downs used at all in 1874, since those were also added to the game by Camp in the 1880s as a direct response to teams abusing his scrimmage rules and holding on to the ball for long periods of time. He originally suggested three downs to move the ball five yards, which he later changed to four and ten. The Burnside rules introduced a similar setup - three downs and ten yards - to the Canadian game.
      So if the question is, "which nation played football of some kind first," the answer is Canada. But if the question is, "which nation introduced the rules that make gridiron football unique from soccer and rugby," the answer is the U.S.

Great video but I would like to point out another difference. The fans. In the NFL all of the stadiums are packed. Not so much in the CFL. I saw EDM play a few times, easy to get a good seat. Pretty good summary actually. Each code has it's strong points/drawbacks. I like that US football has sustained drives and less kicking (they go hand in hand) and the smaller field makes stadiums feel more intimate (small field, big stands). I like Canadian football for everything else: higher scores, more passing, nimbler athletes, late game comebacks are possible due to how the clock works, and I like that there's so much motion before the snap.

    CFL Players usually become late draft picks as they are older and have less of a 'shelf-life' than a college kid. They also question whether a Canadian Footballer will adapt back to the American Game. The CFL has it's own draft and some players are picked twice, once by both leagues. Either way, you won't find a CFL player in the first three rounds of any NFL draft.
    As for the veterans of the NFL playing in the CFL: a lot of them struggle to adapt to the 3 downs, wider field and various nuances to the game.
    Most recently former Heismann Trophy winning QB Troy Smith signed with the Montreal Alouettes and absolutely stunk up the joint.
    Chad Ochocinco is doing okay with the Allouettes, but the people who find the most success tends to be in a specialised role. I.e. Kickers, Special Teams, etc.

      The wide open nature of the CFL game means that 4 downs would be a nearly insurmountable advantage for the offense. The use of 3 downs fits the balance between offense and defense. When you think of it; after 150 yrs, the game has evolved to a place where all the rules more or less mesh sufficiently for the game.
      The statement in the video appears to be a bit of a mistake.

      I prefer the CFL but after joining an NFL fantasy league have come to like the NFL as well. You're right that an NFL all-star steam would likely destroy a CFL all-star team, but that's not because the CFL game is inferior - it's because the US is 10 times larger than Canada and the NFL makes billions of dollars more than the CFL, which it invests (some of) back into the game. Comparing the two leagues is like comparing apples to oranges. Personally, I think you can enjoy both (I also enjoy NCAA football quite a bit) without getting into a dick swinging contest about who's players are "better".

    Excellent video. The only (minor) error is that a missed field goal is a live ball in American football - it can be picked up and run with by the other team. The reasons this almost never happens, however, are that most kicks either hit the ground in the end zone (which makes it automatically dead) or it is declared dead because nobody touched it in the field of play (usually after a block, where neither team has any reason to touch it). However, on really long field goal attempts, especially to end halves, teams usually have a returner back to try and make a return (Just last year there was a college game [Auburn-Alabama] where Auburn won by returning a missed field goal for a touchdown). In Canadian football, however, the other team has an incentive to make sure it doesn't go out the end zone (to not concede the point), plus the end zones are longer and the goals are on the goal line, meaning there is a better shot for a return.

    • @NinhLyUK
      @NinhLyUK  10 років тому +2

      Hey Eric.
      I'm pretty sure the NFL rules the missed field goal as dead. But you are right, in NCAA it is ruled live.
      Because a live missed field goal rarely happens, I had to make a few sweeping generalities with regard to some of the rules.
      Explaining the rule differences between Canadian Football, NFL Football, NCAA Football & International American Football would have confused the crap out of everyone!
      Thanks again!

    • @bjdon99
      @bjdon99 10 років тому +2

      Ninh Ly Because the goalposts are at the back of the endzone in US football, the ball is rarely in play on a missed FG. Usually the only time you see it is at the end of the first half (or in the Auburn/Alabama game at the end of regulation.) In most other occurances, either the ball goes into the stands, or if it is caught short, it would actually be a better outcome for the team to take the ball at the point of the kick instead of try to run it 55yds out of the endzone.

    • @goodmaro
      @goodmaro 9 років тому

      Ninh Ly The ball on the kick becomes dead in both codes on hitting the ground in the end zone untouched by a player, but otherwise the ball becomes dead only at the regular termination of play regardless it was an attempt at goal. In Federation rules (played by most high schools in the USA and most children's football) the kick becomes dead at the plane of the opposing goal line (if failing to score), but otherwise regardless of whether it was an attempt at goal, just like a punt, the spot of the next snap is according to regular rules, and does not come back to either the previous spot or the spot of the kick. NFL distinguished play from a field goal attempt from that of a punt in 1974, and NCAA later, while the Federation never did.

    • @markdewald5323
      @markdewald5323 6 років тому +1

      No Ben it's not. Go compare an NFL roster to a CFL roster at the skilled positions and you will see that NFL players are faster and bigger than their CFL counterparts. The CFL simply appears faster because it is played on a bigger field with smaller defensive players in a game that favors the offense. Pretty easy to spread the field when all receivers are allowed to be in motion before the ball is snapped. This of course prevents the defense from being able to stack the box and forces them into zone defenses. The biggest difference is the defensive secondaries. Canadian defensive secondaries are very undersized compared to the NFL and are not among the most talented or best paid on a CFL roster. This is totally contrary to the NFL where some of the best athletes and highest paid players are on the defensive side of the ball. There is a massive talent gap in the CFL when it comes to receivers versus defensive ends and corners. This is why the CFL APPEARS to be a faster paced game, but the reality is they are slower than NFL players. Actual game time is comparable between the 2 leagues and actual number of plays is also comparable for both leagues (135-160 total plays per game). So OBJECTIVITY speaking, it is not faster paced at all. It's all perception my friend.

    • @Benjiefrenzy
      @Benjiefrenzy 6 років тому +1

      Mark Dewald The NFL has 40 second timeouts between each play, the CFL only has 25 seconds. 3 downs in the CFL means that the ball needs to move up the field quicker. CFL players are smaller and therefore faster and have more finesse. CFL games regularly go into the 50+ point range, NFL games are more in the 30 point range. There are more possessions in the CFL. The CFL is a faster paced game than the NFL.

    You can't really say football originated in Canada. It wasn't like football was in Canada THEN the US started playing it. That's what it seems like you're saying. It was a long evolutionary process based on other sports. Besides Canadians and Americans are closely related, for back then anyway. Half the Canadian team could have been Americans or 1st Gen Canadian. Like how basketball started by a Canadian American. It's hazy. But I agree you cannot say Canada stole it.

      The point I was trying to make was to dispel the myth that Canadian Football blatantly copied the rules and changed them to form their own game. There are people out there that think that Canadian Football was invented in the 1980's or later!!! (See Austin White's comments for a prime example)
      Yes, you are correct that they have a shared origin, but even then Canadians played their version of football (which was more like Rugby Union) in 1861 before the Americans adopted Walter Camp's rules in 1880. Canadians then adopted the Burnside Rules in 1903 which made Canadian Football more like what American Football is today.

      I always thought the Grey Cup has been Canada’s version of the super bowl. But there have been 51 Super Bowls and 105 grey cups. So does that mean the super bowl is America’s version of the grey cup?

      Agreed - both these sports are different to each other. If you want a cheap laugh, take a read at some of the comments comparing one to the other ... especially the narrow minded ones. Hilarious.

    Great job!!! Is this the only video on utube without a single thumbs down? One hundred years ago, todays CFL rules were called "The Boston Rules" The making of the rules was shared for the first 40 years after the game was invented in Canada Thanks again for sharing this video

    2:12 THat's the only rule I think is really messed up. Think about it if the game is tied toward the end, the team with the ball is guaranteed to win, can just run out the clock and kick a FG from any distance. I would hope there would be an exception to this rule under those circumstances.

    while the CFL should be proud of its game I believe there are a lot rules they could revisit to make the game more enjoyable to watch. my biggest beef with the CFL is the stoppage of the clock on every play once the each half hits the 3 minute warning. the last 3 minutes of each half take excruciating long to finish and slow down the momentum of the game. I find the managing of the clock in the lady 2 minutes of NFL games the most exciting part of the game. because of the stoppage of play on each play after the 3 minute warning cfl games tend to take longer to finish than NFL games.
    I also don't understand why you would get rewarded a pt for missing a field goal. makes no sense to me. you miss, you get nothing, period.

      the thing is, its not only field goals, it is punts too, but I'm canadian and i still dint know exactly how it works. the rule is in place to stop teams from simply taking a knee in the end zine in order to gain yardage

    • @abesKIA

      The goal of the game, is to get the ball across the goal line. How you do it depends on how many points you get. Pass/Carry 6, field goal 3, kick 1. The decision to run the ball out or concede the single adds another layer of strategy to the game for the coaches.

      your not watching the last three minutes properly, try again. The single point ( rugby related) is a simple exchange of a point for field position and rather than reward a team for missing a field goal it actually provides the receiving team the opportunity to run it out or give up a point and take the ball on the 35. It can be very interesting in a defensive game

    A famous Canadian sports columnist used to say: "The NFL has better athletes; The CFL has the better game." - Today, the first part may be true still (to some degree), but athletes have become much closer in talent, due to EVERYONE having access to superior training methods, and the propensity for The NFL to almost REFUSE to let a "small" athlete play in their league, no matter HOW TALENTED they are! (See Doug Flutie, for example, who ended up one of the greatest players in the history of The CFL, but would have easily developed into a superstar in The NFL too, had anyone given him the chance). But smaller stature does not equate to less talented an athlete. The speed needed to cover the field in the CFL means almost all the players need to be more stream-lined. Yes, the O-Line is obviously one area where the NFL "excels", if you want to call drafting and keeping all the players over 6'5 and 450 pounds "excelling". As for the 2nd part of the Jim Taylor (the columnist) quote, there is NO QUESTION CFL football as a game is only about 1,000 times a more entertaining, flowing, exciting, action packed game, period, than the NFL (for SO MANY REASONS it would be a long time at the keyboard to explain...) GO LIONS!

      I think the 20 second play clock is a big reason for that David, and if there were CFL rules the NFL should adopt it would be: time management
      no yards for punt returns
      Move the ball back to the 35 (25 NFL) for extra points CFL Overtime Rules (which apparently are similar to US college ball)

      Chris H While I agree I do just love the game itself too, NFL is just SO boring, very often, and one of the biggest reasons is this: qz.com/150577/an-average-nfl-game-more-than-100-commercials-and-just-11-minutes-of-play/
      The 40 second play clock is stifling. It's not needed in any way, and just that alone, as the CFL has only a 20 second play clock, means there'll be an average of TWICE as much actual action happening in a CFL game over an NFL game.
      Also, I hear all the time that the running game is so limited in The CFL; but I know it's not. It's certainly less used than in the NFL, obviously, as going from 4 to 3 downs means, very often, you don't have many 2nd chances to get the job done. But that doesn't mean the running game is any less important, and there would be only the very rare occasion that a championship team in the CFL is a team without a significant running game; it's all the difference.
      Statistically, I back that up with league stats, and going over any number of years, there remain 1,000+ Yd rushers throughout the league, and the best teams almost always have one. Virtually can't win the big game without one. So that argument, which like I said, I hear all the time, is pretty much a fallacy; you're pretty dead in the water without a running game.
      Finally, as mentioned, the difference in what you can do, the variety of plays that can be called in the CFL, just because of the size of the field (and even the 'one yard off the ball' rule), is extraordinary. It makes every down less predictable, thus, the whole game way more exciting from a fan's entertainment point of view. There really is no comparison to the excitement level between CFL and NFL (which, honestly, I almost never bother to watch any more; I used to as a younger man). On the rare occasion, you get an exciting game, but for the most part, I fall asleep watching it. HEY, it's not as bad as trying to watch baseball !!!! Hahaha, so, there is that!

    • @davideaston6944
      @davideaston6944 7 років тому +2

      darren abrey Yes, agree strongly. As I just described to Chris, the 20 second clock means at least twice as much actually play time. That's a HUGE difference. If I could get twice as much ANYTHING for the same price, OF COURSE I'm going to take it!
      The kicking game is a bigger part of The CFL too, not because it's utilized more (as some people will argue: Throw, throw, punt; throw, throw, punt. Hahaha... it's just not true. But the no "fair catch" rule, the rouge point, the placement of the ball after a rouge or missed/made field goal, even going back to (again) the size of the field allowing for the potential of SO MANY MORE 'special plays' (fake punts/fake field goals/on-side kicks/short kickoffs) etc., while at the other end, the width of the field makes for way more impactful kick returns possible, all play into a far more dynamic kicking game. There just is no comparison when it comes to fans' experience.

      so your saying that they have no people in the NFL that is shorter then 6 foot 5 but they have a player that is 5 foot 6 and he is one of the best football players in the lead it is just that your CFL player is not good enough to be in the NFL and if every body in the NFL was 450 pounds then thay would all be fat so get it right football has the most insane games in the world you should of saw the seahawks vs patriots or the saints and broncos game i have so many reasons why the NFL is better
