I had an NES growing up, but I can vividly remember the day my friend told me there was "a new Nintendo" at the toy store. I went: "What do you mean, NEW Nintendo?" to which he replied "I don't know, it's there, it looks awesome and it says Nintendo on the top, so it must be a new one." We were blown away, even though we didn't really understand the concept of console generations at that time.
I remember when I was a kid my friend told me about the super Nintendo as well. I used to play with my dad all the time the NES. Which I have lots of fond memories. Throughout the years I have played pretty much every Console with a few exceptions. I remember when my friend told me about the super nintendo I was like what? Super Nintendo? Lol. Yeah right! I swear I did not believe him lol. 😂
We south Asians never got hands on 16 bit because 16 bit has no bootlegs consoles back in the day like nes. So I didn’t know anything about 16 bit snes until smartphones arrived through emulators 😅 so my all childhood is belongs to nes only 😅.
@Daniel G I'll be 45 this year and I love both systems. Although, I do have more nostalgia for the NES and it's gamepad. Early on, the big deal games for me was SMB1, Zelda 1, and Metroid. Later on, I got into Pro Wrestling, Tetris, Double Dragon 1, Goonies II, Life Force, Contra 1, SMB 2-3, Legacy of the Wizard, Dragon Warrior series, Bionic Commando, MTPO, Ninja Gaiden 1, Ninja Turtles 1&2, and various others. On the SNES, it was SMW, Zelda3, Metroid3, SF2's, Bomberman 1-2, Secret of Mana, Final Fantasy 2-3(US), Paladin's Quest, Mario Kart, Street Racer (for it's 4 player capability). Later on I got into DKC1, SMW2, SFA2, SMRPG. The thing I think is funny is that the NES was actually capable of using the SNES gamepad and all it's buttons, yet for some reason, Nintendo chose to use a different shape for the plug on the SNES gamepad to make it physically impossible to plug it into an NES. I feel kind of cheated, but think I get why they did this. Probably for the same reason they chose not to release Star Fox 2 and their Super FX2 chip. They wanted their customer base to have a clear distinction of the power and capabilities of their newer systems being vastly superior to the older ones. More buttons was one of the mind blowing features that made the SNES more appealing than the NES. If they shared that with the NES, then both fans and developers wouldn't have as much urgency to rush over to the SNES right away. That still doesn't make me feel any better though, figuring this out decades later. Sega at least had the decency of upgrading their gamepad on the Genesis, and not making their fans wait for the Saturn to get more buttons. Although, they were probably forced to because their next-gen system was far from being complete when the Street Fighter 2 craze hit. That could have been curtains for Sega at that point if they didn't figure out how to add more buttons to their gamepad pretty quick. Too bad they didn't give us more buttons at the beginning of the Genesis' life. All they did there was match the same number of buttons as the NES, moving the Select button over and making it 1 more action button. Woohoo! One action button more superior than the NES! Not very innovative for it being more powerful system than the NES if you ask me. Don't even get me started on the Master System's measly 2 button only gamepads. It's great that it used a better processor and had more colors, but that wasn't enough for me, because the NES had more buttons, a much more comfortable directional pad, and I think even 1 more sound channel. The SMS was released years after the NES. I find this failure to meet or exceed the competition in these 2 important areas (more importantly the buttons) to be inexcusable. The Genesis 3 button gamepad would have been more fitting for the Master System, and the Genesis should have started with double that. If I were a developer back then, I would gladly sacrifice developing on one system with better graphics, for one that had more buttons so I could provide more control options to the player. -_- Heh. That's quite a tangent I went on. Oh well. Posting anyways.
I was 6 when I got my brand new NES! Chip & Dale, Mario/Duck Hunt, Marble Madness, Skate or Die, Bayou Billy were my carts. Great times with some "bad" games.
My buddy gave me his SNES as he went full on Extreme Sega in the 90s. Now I needed games. So I looked at it like a restaurant if you go to a pizza place you get pizza as that is what they were known for. So I did the same with the SNES & bought a few titles that started with SUPER in them. Man what joy it was as all the titles with SUPER in them just hit it out of the park...Home Run! Not one bad purchase did I have with the SNES & just recently with internet I can do the same again, but nothing will beat buying blind in the 90s just because it had SUPER on it.
The original NES will always be my favorite because it's the one I grew up with, but I'd say the Super NES is hands-down a better system. It could do everything the NES could do and more...just as an upgrade should!
Yeah! I tend to get that same stride when I wear a pair of women’s PANTIES !!! Definitely gives me more pep in my step…along with a little bit of bouncy-ness. The silky, satin ones feel the best…especially if they are really, REALLY TIGHT. My cock and balls look like a tiny jumbled stub…all squished and pressed up against my groin! Wow!!! Wearing them makes me feel totally A-MAAAA-ZING !!! You should definitely try wearing a pair sometime…you will absolutely love it !!! 🤗
Let’s not forget about the “dogbone” controller that came with the nes top loader, they rounded the edges before the snes. Love your videos, it surprises me that your channel didn’t blow up (yet)
yeah, had I gotten one of those I might have loved the nes... but the brick controllers were always the bane of my experience whenever I rented an NES or played at my friend's house. so many of the games were so hard too... they wanted to force you to call the hotline or buy nintendo power. the games were contests of sheer memorization to win in some many cases. you memorized the game then showed off to your friends who came over who didn't have the game so had no hope of competing because they couldn't master it in a few hours when you days/weeks/etc to do so. if I had bought an nes instead of a genesis I would have made it my mission to track down a game genie and a pair of dogbones and had a blast. another thing I loved with video games was multiplayer. so many console games were about taking turns or just single player. drop in, drop out coop or vs. were something arcades did so well. consoles that embraced couch gaming as much as they did online multiplayer have kept me using them. like on my 360 that's mostly what I do. there's only so much I can do playing a game that feels more like an interactive movie that I never want to touch again once I've beaten it once (and I can't be bothered to grind through it and get every last item or achievement). so much more fun to enjoy with friends far and near, much like the arcades of old where you got together a pick up game with some strangers or gathered with your best pals and took on the world together
The Super NES is the best console of all time, in my opinion, edging out the original Playstation...but the NES is the most important console of all time.
I don't like most of the iconic titles it had to offer, but it has some great games. Most of my favorite titles are on Super Famicom, that we didn't get over here.
Both consoles are amazing, though I prefer the Super Nintendo. It was the console I grew up with and I'll never forget playing classics like Super Mario World, Street Fighter II Turbo, Killer Instinct, Mortal Kombat II and Super Widget
I grew up playing pc games until I got an N64 - but I did, mostly as an adult, go back and play a SNES and loved it, but the NES is much harder to love. The games get the same amount of playtime but the NES does it by making you die and die again until you adapt to it's levels and memorize it and play it expertly. After playing modern games, and not having nostalgia fueling me, it is difficult to play but so far I've at least beaten castlevania 1. Hoping to finish more in time
NES was my first console, I got it at the age of 3 and it kickstarted a video game obsession for me. Christmas of 95 I got exactly what I asked for: a Super Nintendo. It still is my favorite Christmas memory ever. I love both systems and really couldn't imagine giving up one completely. SNES was obviously an improvement over the NES(or "Regular Nintendo" as we once called it), but so many NES games are must plays for anybody serious about retro gaming. As much as I love Super Mario World, Super Mario Bros 3(NES, not the allstars) will always be my favorite 2D Mario. The NES revived the American video game industry. On the other hand, the SNES is an improvement in just about every way over the NES. Games looked, played, and sounded better. The controller was a stepping stone to getting us to modern controllers. The console war between the SNES and Genesis(I had one too) made for some great games and defined what a console generation actually was.
the snes charm and 16bit gfx is just enough where you can do a lot of really well done art without being so limited, the nes i felt had a lot of black screens due to gfx limitations and just kind of gives me bad vibes sometimes, so overall i enjoy the vibrant colors and palletes of the snes, tho i do love the nes charm sometimes when used right it can also be very vibrant and very nice but wasnt done as much. also the depth of story, difficulty decrease and access to saves on most games is very nice on snes
I'm in the SNES camp too. My first 8-bit console was Sega Master System although I asked Santa for an NES, Santa thought the Master System had better graphics and brought that instead. Actually, because I had a Master System I moved to Genesis first then got a SNES later and fell in love with it. I still think it's the greatest console of all time. That said, I still like the NES, I played it a lot at friends' houses and I'm still getting into games I missed out on now. I also like Genesis too, but my answer is SNES all the way!
I underestimated the importance of this until I finally got my hands on a Super Famicom controller which doesn't have the mix of concave and convex buttons.
@@FeralInferno I wanted a Super Famicom controller for years due to the cool looking colored buttons only to find out the North American SNES controllers were actually better, lol.
The Super Nintendo will always be my favorite gaming console, just because I grew up with it, and it was my first console. But I have to say, the NES is also a great console with some great games in it's library.
@Retro Bird thank you for cleaning your systems before closeups. Many retro gaming channels look like they haven't cleaned their systems in years. It bugs the hell out of me. It 's a small but important detail that I'm sure will help to channel to greater success.
That is something I definitely try to be very mindful of, though I always wonder in the back of my mind if I've ever missed it in a shot somewhere in my videos. There have been times where I've filmed something and then upon playback saw that something had a bit of dust on it... I was like "UGH" and then cleaned it off and filmed it again.
I'm 42 and had both NES and SNES as a kid. I view them as having a shared identity, the SNES just looks and sounds nicer. They both played the same sort of games and a backwards compatible SNES model would have felt completely natural if Nintendo had developed one back then. I'm really surprised at how Zelda: Link to the Past's reputation has become some great over the years. Back then it struck me as a good SNES game like Super Castlevania but not a system seller or a super prominent game. I've always considered the NES Legend of Zelda the superior game. Similarly Super Metroid struck me as a slightly improved, prettier version of the Gameboy's Metroid 2. NES gamepad corners absolutely will dig into your palms if you play long enough. Or played too long really if I'm being honest with myself. I still remember the aches from long hours of twitch games. The SNES dogbone style came as quite a relief to me.
My first console was an snes (technically Gameboy) and whenever I went to another kids house who had the NES and they wanted to play it I begrudgingly stood by. I’m sure there are some games I could find and play for it that I’d enjoy, but for me as a kid it always felt like “good” video games weren’t released until the Genesis and then SNES were released.
The interesting thing with both NES and SNES was that the cartridges was kind of a part of the hardware. The hardware/electronics inside the cartridges got improved a lot! So that's why it was possible to make games like Super Mario Bros 3. Just compare the earliest and latest NES games. Such a big difference! And this for the same console. I wonder how great NES games it's possible to make today (2021) if some gaming company would do their best. I love both NES and SNES but I have a little bit more and stronger feelings for NES actually.
I can't remember seeing an NES vs SNES video like this before. Awesome!! For me, it's SNES but I think it's because I was on the young side when NES was around. When I had an NES, I was so young that the games I played were the games I got for Christmas or birthday, or the games my friends had. In contrast, since I was older with the SNES, I just played so many more games since I had a flyer route by then, and I could go to the local video store to rent games. I think for now, I still prefer SNES games, but the Mega Man series is one of the games that just seems better on the NES. I'm now curious if I would prefer the NES if I just played more NES games. :D Thanks again for the great video!
Dude @8:39ish, the expression is Oscar worthy!! I fucking LOVE the tiny clip things expressing emotions through quick body/facial language. No joke man, its some of the funniest shit on YT gaming vids. Keep it up!!
The NES was one of my first home consoles and it was a fun system. The standout games for me are: 1. Target Renegade 2. Ninja Gaiden 3. Ninja Gaiden II 4. Little Nemo and the Dream Master 5. Super Mario Bros. 6. Super Mario Bros. 3 7. Duck Tales 8. Contra 9. Super C 10. Tecmo Bowl 11. Megan Man 2 12. Mega Man 3 13. Wrath of the Black Manta 14. Double Dragon II: The Revenge 15. River City Ransom 16. Chip ‘n Dale: Rescue Rangers 17. Jackal 18. The Legend of Zelda II 19. Dragon Warrior 20. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Arcade The SNES was a highly anticipated home console for me. The standout games for me are: 1. Super Punchout 2. Super Metroid 3. Killer Instinct 4. Mickey Mouse and the Magical Quest 5. Super Mario World 6. Super Street Fighter II: The New Challengers 7. Mortal Kombat II 8. Contra III: The Alien Wars 9. Final Fantasy III (VI) 10. Secret of Mana 11. Megan Man X 12. Mega Man X2 13. Mega Man 7 14. Super Double Dragon 15. Donkey Kong Country 16. Donkey Kong Country 2 17. Top Gear 18. The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past 19. Super Mario Kart 20. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Turtles In Time If I had to pick just one, I’m definitely going with the Super Nintendo! Whereas the games for the NES were absolutely great, the SNES games took it up a notch and gave me an almost arcade experience mixed with cool adventure games and sequels that are far more than just enhancements. Plus, the whole SNES versus Genesis just made that generation more eventful.
@@RetroBirdGaming - I was with family and one of them was nice enough to buy me Little Nemo and the Dream Master. I knew absolutely nothing about it, but just about any game that had CAPCOM’S name on the game box was something you just don’t question, you just buy. I was not disappointed! That game was EPIC!!! The music, the game play, the graphics, everything. I had a good time with it. To me, it felt like an interactive storybook. Well done CAPCOM!
I grew up with the NES as a child and later the SNES, but I'd give a slight edge to the SNES. Don't get me wrong, I love both systems, but I generally go back to SNES games more than the NES games. I'm not sure exactly all the reasons why, but I think one of the reasons may be the wider game library and game design. SNES had such a variety of titles and just seemed to have tighter controls in many games. I love Super Metroid and Link to the Past, but not fond of the way The original Legend of Zelda or original Metroid played. Also, I appreciate SNES games being a more comfortable challenge compared to the NES ones. For example, Super Castlevania IV features a gradual difficulty curve whereas the original NES Castlevanias never hesitated to throw you in the dirt constantly. 😅
Hey there, Retro Bird! It's the Super Retro Bird here! Just wanted to say you fly like a fledgling! Just kidding! Speaking of which, I appreciate your sense of humor, and it's part of why I'm drawn to your channel! Birds of a feather flock together! I prefer the Super Nintendo personally, but the NES is fantastic as well and, of course, helped to pave the way for the Super Nintendo to reach the greater heights that it did.
As a piece of hardware, Super NES hands down. To me, it boils down to power. The power of the SNES in comparison to the NES allowed, in my opinion, a quantum leap in the type of gameplay that the system could handle. Try telling me that you could have had something similar to Turtles in Time on the NES and I will laugh. The different styles of gameplay, as well as the sophistication of the game mechanics that were possible on the SNES, just couldn't be matched on the NES. The NES was quite good at particular genres, especially platformers, some kinda rudamentary 2D bmups like Black Box Kung Fu, basic RPGs, etc. It really sparks the imagination of a developer. The SNES allowed those developers to bring to life the kinds of games they could only imagine during the NES era. Rad Racer is cool, but I will give it up any day if it's between that and F-Zero. Same goes for SMB3 vs Yoshi's Island, SMB1 vs Super Mario World, Zelda 1 vs Link to the Past, Metroid vs Super Metroid, etc. It's not just a matter of graphics. It's a fundamental difference in the kind of gameplay that's possible.
Another awesome video. There are channels with 500k+ subs that have a fraction of the entertainment and production value. You’ll get there quick with stuff like this.
Stumbled upon this video and your channel after doing a random 'super nintendo' search. I'm kinda surprised that your channel isn't bigger considering your quality and presentation style. As for NES and SNES, they're both a little bit before my time, but I got to play some NES games like 1942, Battle City, Bomberman, Super Maio Bros, Tetris on VCD/DVD players with those SunPlus chipsets in the past and had fun despite the terrible controller. Got to play other NES and SNES games later on through emulation and SNES would be my preference now as it had more power and the games tend to be more polished as developers got better at making games.
Related to the NES, it was years later that I discovered there was a Famicom at home that was left by a relative, but I never got it to power up as it was only the console. No games, no power adapter, and I don't even have any working CRT tvs anymore. So I just cleaned it up and discovered that membranes for one of the controllers were falling apart. Didn't bother with the repair as it'll be only used for display and I'm not nostalgic about it as I didn't have any attatchment to it. But I wouldn't dispose of it.
Glad you found you the channel! I'm also happy to hear that you care about the Nintendo and Super Nintendo despite them being a bit before your time :)
In terms of games, Super Nintendo is when I believe gaming got good. I love some of the NES classics, but the Super Nintendo is such a remarkable improvement. Still love Super Mario Bros 3 and even Kid Icarus to this day though.
I played my NES so much that I never even knew that the SNES released until it was too late. I just went straight to the N64 after playing the Mario 64 demo at Blockbuster.
I’m split, NES was my first system and definitely most nostalgic. Plus with songs like double dragon, moon theme on Duck Tales, palace theme on The Adventures of link and so many other iconic toons it’s hard to go wrong. On top of all that it got me started on RPG’s with the original Final Fantasy the first game I ever beat. On the super Nintendo side you’re right they did really improve on so many aspects of gaming. Games like Donkey Kong country and a link to the past and Final Fantasy three Bing prime examples of taking an excellent game and improving on almost every aspect of it. The music here was also iconic bowser‘s castle theme in super Mario world and Donkey Kong country in particular had amazing soundtracks. Plus we got introduced to fantastic games like Mario kart and Star Fox. I’m sorry but I just can’t pick. I love them both
This was a fantastic video! NES for me because I tend to prefer the games on it: Castlevania 3 over Super Castlevania, Contra and Super C over Contra 3, SMB 3 over Super Mario World, etc. The SNES is still an incredible game console though. This is truly a match off between titans.
I like the Snes more than the Nes but still really like the Nes. I find that the Snes has the more overall better known titles but I find more and better hidden Gems on the Nes. Cool little games that I didn’t know existed that turn out fun. I don’t find as many of those with the Snes.
I had more games for the NES than SNES. I also go back and play the NES more often, as SNES feel more slower paced. However, if it's fighting games, you will have to go w/SNES.
I was thinking the same thing, I love the pace of Super Mario Bros on NES, Super Mario World is fun but there's no comparison IMO. Mega Man 2 also feels faster than Mega Man 7 although Mega Man X feels fast still, it was clearly a design choice on SNES.
Retro Bird you are literally the best thing to happen to UA-cam Retro Gaming in years. You're channel imo is VASTLY than even the bigger ones in the space like RGT85, Metal Jesus, Dreamcastguy, etc. You're genuinely funny, passionate, and most of all you have actual talent. I never see you shill, or promote cruddy products, or beg for money - or divide you're viewers between a paywall. You don't do lame top 10 lists of games you clearly care nothing about just for ad rev, and I cant think of literally a single bad video on you're channel. I've been on here for a long time, and honestly you're channel is not only a Dimond in a sea of bland, uninspired, click-bait, soulless gaming content (usually to fill space or designed to sell products) - but a nuclear radiant Death Star Core whos blinding light reminds me what gaming channels and youtubers used to be like all those years back. I've been singing the praise of you're channel to others for months now, and I always recommend people check you're stuff out.
Wow! What a compliment :) I really appreciate that. It's been great to make content for people I care about without ever even meeting them. That is, my fellow retro gamers! I'm just so thankful that there's people who care about this stuff as much as I do. BTW, I have done top 10 lists before but I swear that it's because I just really want to talk about those games!
SNES is the pinnacle of 2D gaming in my opinion (although the Saturn was very good at that as well) so I'd have to go SNES. I also think its so-so to average games are better whereas the *best* games on each system are pretty comparable if that makes sense
Another entertaining video Retro Bird! It has to be the NES for me. It wasn't my first console (I had the Atari 2600) but it still feels the most important. When I got a little bit back into retro games about 12 years ago, my only thought was the NES. I didn't even remotely consider collecting for the SNES or Genesis and when the mini console craze started if the NES classic didn't get so much attention I might have ignored the whole scene. It's funny because my NES classic gets the least play time of my consoles now but it was absolutely necessary to pull me back into the hobby and I'm so glad it did.
The NES is one of the few Nintendo consoles I never owned because the Super Nintendo had already been released by the time my mom decided to get me a system, and she thought it was better because it was newer (understandable a non-gamer would think that). For similar reasons, she got me a Sega Game Gear instead of a Game Boy for my first hand held (she thought it was better because it had color).
A agree, the NES had some sadistically hard games. When I got my Game Genie that one fine Christmas everything changed, though. :p I grew up with the NES, but the SNES really drew me in, and the majority of my most memorable gaming experiences were on that console. IMO the 16-bit era is really where 2D gaming hit it's stride even though next gen consoles has some pretty memorable 2D titles as well (looking at you, SOTN). The NES in comparison holds more of a nostalgic place in my heart. Some of my most beloved games on the NES are special to me because of the sheer mystery of game play exploration. Non-linear games like Metroid, Zelda/Link and Legacy of the Wizard - games where you could truly get lost and have no clue what to do without the help of a magazine of the Nintendo 1-800 hotline - they really set the stage for non-linear exploration and progress based on item acquisition. There were no in-game maps to help. In fact, IIRC the manual for Metroid actually recommends that you DRAW out a map with a pencil and paper to track your progress. Compared to today's games that basically hold your hand through the whole experience and provide checkpoints every 30 seconds, the NES days churned out some real alpha gamers. Love the channel, by the way!
My first memories of my life are of my older brother playing super Mario world at home and on family vacations over 30 years ago so while I did finally get an NES years ago never had that many games for it so its always been the SNES that had my earliest gaming memories.
I had a super nintendo as a kid so I'm super nostalgic about that console and it's games. My best friends family had a NES so I played that too but then and now I found it way to hard to be enjoyable. I love that games have become easier to play since then. I hate dying constantly. I don't demon souls games
NES for the WIN! - In fact, I went from NES to Sega Genesis and completely skipped Super Nintendo...Except for when i was at my buddies house who had it. I do appreciate the Super Nintendo however. It did have some good games
That exact thing happened a lot back in the day. There were even news events based on interviews with parents about how they would boycott Nintendo products instead of buy a SNES.
I'm snes all the way, I wish I could get into the nes. I love the history and watching other people play but it's a difficult barrier for me to get into, mainly the lack of direction, I love games but I'm not very good so I usually skip the nes games your humor makes these so much better, I love it
I love both consoles, but the SNES just has a greater number of awesome games, and in fact, it is my favorite console of all time. My second however is the NES, followed closely by the Genesis. I've finished at least very close to 500 games on each of those three consoles and over 4,500 games all total in my life. There just isn't a better console than the SNES.
I prefer the NES because I never owned a SNES. I simply don't have nostalgia for the SNES like I do for the NES. I always enjoyed playing the SNES when I went to a friend's house that had one but I never got to experience the same level of love/frustration with those games. I did own a Sega so if you asked if I preferred Sega to SNES it would definitely be a yes. I would also say I preferred Sega over NES but it would be very close. Also if I could strut like you in sweat pants I would walk everywhere I went.
Even though I have collections for both, I'd have to say NES since I have more childhood nostalgia for it. I didn't buy a SNES until after I got an N64, not that I hadn't seen it or played it, I just had the NES at home and enjoyed the heck out of the comparatively small collection, renting new games and unowned favorites, trading games with friends, losing good games in trades and then having to rebuy them years later and going to a friend's house to play SNES. You know... the things. I didn't have a problem with the controller when I was a kid, but now I find it uncomfortable due to a hand injury or two. It's the worst with Smash TV when you have one controller in each hand! But, a nice workaround is the Dogbone controller which I got a pair of with a top loader a couple years ago. I started recording some game footage and the classic NES works better for that so, now I have both. Hooray! Also in all the years collecting, I've just been more likely to grab an NES game than a SNES one. It's 148:81 on my shelf. Do I have too many games? (That's just 2 out of 25 console/handheld collections!) Love the channel! Catching up on some of your older videos since I only discovered your channel in the last year probably and you have a great entertaining formula and easy familiar topics that are very relatable. Keep up the great work!
NES for me... I went to Sega after the NES, but I Played the SNES at my friend's houses many times. I Didn't have an SNES, until I was 12. Way Back in 97. By then I already had a Sega Saturn and a PS1, so didn't play that, as much as I do now.
In my opinion I feel like i have much more fun playing nes then the snes the Super Nintendo is still a great console but I feel like NES is better in my opinion
The worst thing about the SNES is how every game now has some story part that you have to skip through. And you can't just get to the game. Plus the slowdown on SNES games. That slow processor!
Yeah NES is great, and while I enjoy the SNES, when I look back on the games libraries for the respective consoles, the NES games always get me in my feels.
For the NES, The Legend of Zelda and Super Mario Bros. were a blast! Absolutely loved the Super NES and Street Fighter 2! For me, both systems are fantastic and were a huge part of my childhood. NES Hard - Ghosts ’N Goblins - rented that game a ton until I finally beat it…then had to beat it again…thanks Capcom!
It's too tough to choose for me personally speaking, for every SNES game I love I can probably choose an NES game I enjoy just as much. I think what would have cinched the SNES as my favorite is if it had just a few more 16 bit remakes like Mario All-Stars or Dragon Quest I+II in the library. But as far as I'm concerned, I can't have one without the other.
Loved the video man! I thought that you explain things so very well and I agree with you on pretty much everything! Keep playing Battletoads because one day you will beat it and it took me 10 years so don't feel too bad! I literally just beat Snake Rattle 'n Roll the other day and that is a game that took me 30 years to finish! In any case I don't know which of the two consoles is my favorite because I always lump them together when discussing greatest consoles of all time. I would probably go with the NES if I had to choose one but with that being said I believe that the Super Nintendo library has greater strength at the top with games like Chrono Trigger and Donkey Kong Country 2 being the best of the bunch.
I collect for the NES and play it often. Nesrgb is great. My kid navigates the maps for metroid and zelda which I printed out. But the SNES is what I grew up with so I played it so much that I can't see collecting for it again. I just use the snes mini and put a ton of games on it. Like em both but went with NES for physical collection.
Ghost and goblins is the Mack daddy of nes hard. Another awesome video. I can’t choose between the super nes and nes. I love them both. Nostalgia for both, both have awesome titles and I have fun playing both. If I had a gun to my head and made to choose I would just say one but couldn’t really choose. Lol. I can always count on getting a good laugh watching your video. The blade under the controller was a good one. Haha
im still on my way to getting the famicom, i already got the super famicom (europe snes) and nes and snes famicoms are never onsale for no reason, but good video, motivates me to get more retro consoles
Cool vid man. I really wanted, but missed both systems back in the day. I know both are icons, but it's all about the SNES for me. The 16-bit era was just magical imo and the jump from 8-bit the systems was night and day. Looking at the games, the graphics, the sounds, and the even the control pad it's easy to give the nod to the SNES.
In general, I think the NES excelled at fast-paced, challenging action games, while the Super Nintendo's library skewed slower and gentler. Castlevania III versus IV is my classic example. I'm a NES guy first and foremost, but I can still acknowledge the greatness of stuff like Chrono Trigger.
The SNES has masterpeices like Super Metroid and Zelda, but something about the pickup and play games like balloon fight or bubble bobble are much more satisfying to me.
SNES was my second console (first was Master System) and I absolutely loved it and still love it. Super Mario World was a colorful joy, DKC2 was a mix of magical soundtracks, beautiful levels and amazing secrets to discover, etc. So far, I've only played NES games on Nintendo Online, and I do like many games there, but SNES wins my preference.
My first console and video games in my life childhood, was an Atari 2600. Once the Nintendo Entertainment System came out and i had the chance to have my NES; the Atari became too obsolete and replaced in no time. And never missed for him anymore ( even to remember it ) For me, the NES it's the best console of all time in everyway. However, i know the Snes. It's a great Machine, Superb Godly kind of games. No matter what to say. No excuses, the Snes it's and still the best system and games ever created so far, and not even the same Nintendo cannot matched it's greatness. Asuming for myself. I still prefer more the NES rather than the SNES. The Nes was my first great real Adventure ( even to this day ) And it's so Special to me.
NES because I owned the console as a kid and, more importantly, it was my first experience playing any kind of video game ever. (I may not have even experienced arcades by that point, hard to say) I cannot forget how novel and new it was experiencing the world of video games for the first time. From SMB1 and Duck Hunt I was hooked.
The importance of the nes CANT be understated at all for saving gaming in the U.S and quiet possibly in other nations too! The nes in my opinion had the best games of all a time at the time and really made the idea of a console itself a must and less of a thing just to buy for just entertainment or a novelty! The nes did everything well and quiet perfectly tbh although it was a learning period for developers I think games tended to be unfairly hard but the games that are fairly hard like battletoads my god they are good ! With all that being said thought I think the snes was just a better and bigger continuation of what the nes started.
I had neither system, so my favorite was the one at any friend’s house who would invite me over for a sleepover. We could never stay awake long enough to beat Mario 3, though.
retro collections, emulation and backwards compatibility proves that "old" doesn't mean "not as good." and compare that with the endless sequels and lack of innovation in so much of the games industry and boom, there you go. old gaming is just new gaming done right. there are fresh new games but not as often as people want to admit.
as a young gamer I started out with arcade games, so they were the standard by which I judged everything else. to me the atari 2600 was nowhere close to arcades. the games were fun but they just kind of generally reminded you of a game. the nes fell far short as well... hardly any colors, very pixelated, really primitive sound. the closest conversions were the oldest ones. games that were a decade in the past were closer on the console, but arcades were always ahead. when the sega genesis came out a lot of games were starting to look closer to their arcade counterparts. the super nintendo also was getting close on some of these, and the older games were almost perfect in both cases. of course the neo geo was arcade perfect because it was arcade hardware! but nobody I knew could afford such a beast with each game costing as much as a whole regular console! eventually arcades were in decline and many would say by the time we got the n64 and the playstation the 3d arcade games were more or less what you got at home. that wasn't entirely true of course but getting harder and harder to find superior arcade games in terms of graphics, sound, and overall pizzaz. then we got the dreamcast with all its gimmick controls (a trick that the wii was also pulling off albeit in limited form). and by this time load times in disc games were tolerable instead of being completely annoying. now suddenly the graphics were the same (sometimes even better at home), and even the special control gimmicks could be had at home... other than the disco lights and smoke machines, you had the arcade at home. and arcades were dead at that point. sad for arcades... and yes I know we have the nostalgia museums and barcades but it was over. still, when my favorite arcade games were at home the graphics had to be pretty close and the gameplay had to be as good or better than what we got there. sometimes the gameplay was achieved better on the inferior hardware. look at kung fu master... way more colorful graphics in the orginal but the gameplay was much tighter and I think more fun in "kung fu" on the nes. in the end it was about the fun you had even if all we ever talked about back then was graphics and what was the newest thing.
There's no separating them in my mind. Both lead down deep rabbit holes. You learn about how much better both were in Japan, and then import a Famicom and Super Famicom and then games. and accessories. and controllers. Then you learn about high end video - RGB. Then you learn about PVMs. Then you learn the NES can't do RGB so you look into how to mod it. All told, you've put in thousands of dollars over the decades. And I don't regret it at all. wait did I say "I"? I mean, uh, you.
My favorite video game system is the NES. If I could only have one game system, then I'd pick the NES. Though I'd prefer to play the NES games on the Switch in handheld mode like on the Switch Online service. Though I will say the NES and SNES are my two favorite systems. My 3rd favorite system may just be with Switch, only because I can play many of the old NES and SNES games in handheld mod. Which has become my preferred way to play these games. And that means I could play in handheld mode while watching a TV show at the same time. Haha.
Well, it’s common sense. The SNES is more Super than the NES. Super Retro Bird Spin off channel confirmed? Amazing find: I bought a big lot of GB games and got my hands on a Not For Resale Pokémon Crystal, original battery still working!
I’m closing in on 40 so I’m old enough to have played the NES as a kid, but the SNES was actually my first childhood console so it has a ton of nostalgia for me. It’s also got some of the most iconic games (with equally iconic music). Zelda, Mario, DK, Mega Man. It also has Mario Paint and the Super Game Boy! Super (see what I did there?) unique accessories! The winner goes to the SNES.
NES for me because Its the first memorable gaming memories I had as a young kid. I have the same found memories with genesis and snes but something about the original nes I keep going back to those games the most over the years. Such nostalgia. ❤
I know this is a bit of a cop out answer but I love both. Both consoles came out before I was born. Generally I like the SNES more than the original although I do prefer the asethetic of the Super Famicom & Super Nintendo in Japan & Europe that we got here in North America.
SNES but it's hard to explain how amazing NES was. You'd need to go back to 1986/87, play LoZ, Castlevania, and Metroid with your only frame of reference being Atari 2600. Two different universes
I love the SNES, but Christmas of 1985 will forever go down as my favorite ever. I opened up the NES with ROB and never looked back. I love the SNES more then NES, but the NES is undoubtedly the most important console of all time. Without it, who even knows if we’d have gaming today.
Although NES gameplay was usually more difficult, I prefer the NES. Difficult but less complex than most SNES games. I like simplicity in my video games. But both are enjoyable.
It's just so cool that you could find out about a new console in a way like that. Practically impossible nowadays.
Since my neighbor wouldn’t shut up about how much more awesome the Sega Genesis was vs the NES, I figured a Super NES was coming sooner than later! 😄
NES, but I'll be 40 in October. I had the SNES also, but I'll never forget my first love.
Heh. That's quite a tangent I went on. Oh well. Posting anyways.
It’s hard to top that feeling unboxing the NES and firing up Super Mario Bros for the first time! 🙂🤯😍
I was 6 when I got my brand new NES! Chip & Dale, Mario/Duck Hunt, Marble Madness, Skate or Die, Bayou Billy were my carts. Great times with some "bad" games.
@@anderxale1 haha everyone had that darn bayou billy cart it seemed!
NES, and I turned 40 in Sep. Atari 2600 was my first crush, but it was fleeting. NES was my first true love too.
That walking part got me pretty good haha.
Thanks. I've been walking for quite a few years now. So, I'm pretty good at it.
@@RetroBirdGaming I hope I can walk just as good as you some day!
The stride...the confidence...
I own and LOVE both!!! I prefer the SNES to NES, mainly because it sparked my love for gaming, great controller, outstanding sound, etc.
Let’s not forget about the “dogbone” controller that came with the nes top loader, they rounded the edges before the snes. Love your videos, it surprises me that your channel didn’t blow up (yet)
Yes, the dogbone is very similar to the SNES controller in a lot of ways. Thanks for the positive vibes about my channel!
The New NES came out after the SNES.
NES 2 came out in 93. The NES-039 controller took inspiration from the SNES.
Am I looking at the WordPerfect?!
yeah, had I gotten one of those I might have loved the nes... but the brick controllers were always the bane of my experience whenever I rented an NES or played at my friend's house. so many of the games were so hard too... they wanted to force you to call the hotline or buy nintendo power. the games were contests of sheer memorization to win in some many cases. you memorized the game then showed off to your friends who came over who didn't have the game so had no hope of competing because they couldn't master it in a few hours when you days/weeks/etc to do so. if I had bought an nes instead of a genesis I would have made it my mission to track down a game genie and a pair of dogbones and had a blast. another thing I loved with video games was multiplayer. so many console games were about taking turns or just single player. drop in, drop out coop or vs. were something arcades did so well. consoles that embraced couch gaming as much as they did online multiplayer have kept me using them. like on my 360 that's mostly what I do. there's only so much I can do playing a game that feels more like an interactive movie that I never want to touch again once I've beaten it once (and I can't be bothered to grind through it and get every last item or achievement). so much more fun to enjoy with friends far and near, much like the arcades of old where you got together a pick up game with some strangers or gathered with your best pals and took on the world together
The Super NES is the best console of all time, in my opinion, edging out the original Playstation...but the NES is the most important console of all time.
I would say the games on the SNES have aged better than on the PS1 as well.
I don't like most of the iconic titles it had to offer, but it has some great games. Most of my favorite titles are on Super Famicom, that we didn't get over here.
PS2 too me is the best ever, but NES has nostalgia factor. SNES was dead to me since I was a Genesis kid by then.
Another great thing about the SNES controller was the mix of convex and concave buttons on AB/XY. Gave you a nice tactile feedback for your fingers.
I underestimated the importance of this until I finally got my hands on a Super Famicom controller which doesn't have the mix of concave and convex buttons.
@@catsaregovernmentspies same here! It really was a genius idea. I wish it would've carried over to future controllers.
@@FeralInferno I wanted a Super Famicom controller for years due to the cool looking colored buttons only to find out the North American SNES controllers were actually better, lol.
@@FeralInferno The difference in touch helps a lot, I agree.
NES only cause it is the console that got me into video games and collecting. I love collecting NES games more than. SNES.
Yes, I'd imagine it's a huge sentimental favorite!
I'll never forgive Lance Barr for adding the knife to the back of the controller.
Thanks again for the great video!
It can hard to know which console you prefer until you've played enough games on it. Glad you like you the video! Thanks for watching :)
Dude @8:39ish, the expression is Oscar worthy!! I fucking LOVE the tiny clip things expressing emotions through quick body/facial language. No joke man, its some of the funniest shit on YT gaming vids. Keep it up!!
Glad you like 'em! I have a lot of fun with it :)
Your vids are too good man 👍

If I had to pick just one, I’m definitely going with the Super Nintendo! Whereas the games for the NES were absolutely great, the SNES games took it up a notch and gave me an almost arcade experience mixed with cool adventure games and sequels that are far more than just enhancements. Plus, the whole SNES versus Genesis just made that generation more eventful.
Good stuff! Glad to see Little Nemo on there.
I never had a NES. My first system was the SNES. What a wonderful console.
Ahh, that Super Retro Bird with his smack talk :) Thanks for the compliments! Your opinion of the two consoles is pretty similar to mine.
Thank you so much! I appreciate that a lot :)
NES was my first console from about 4-7 years old, then I upgraded to a SNES. Hard choice but I think I’d rather play SNES games today.
Ok. The comedy is Golden in this video. Nice job sir
Thank you my friend!
I love them both
Some of that music really is just so dang iconic. I can respect your "no decision".
This was a fantastic video! NES for me because I tend to prefer the games on it: Castlevania 3 over Super Castlevania, Contra and Super C over Contra 3, SMB 3 over Super Mario World, etc. The SNES is still an incredible game console though. This is truly a match off between titans.
Thanks Jake! Yes, two titans indeed!
I like the Snes more than the Nes but still really like the Nes. I find that the Snes has the more overall better known titles but I find more and better hidden Gems on the Nes. Cool little games that I didn’t know existed that turn out fun. I don’t find as many of those with the Snes.
Let me educate then, since the SNES has a rather large number of "hidden gem" games. Are there any genres you prefer?
I had more games for the NES than SNES. I also go back and play the NES more often, as SNES feel more slower paced. However, if it's fighting games, you will have to go w/SNES.
I was thinking the same thing, I love the pace of Super Mario Bros on NES, Super Mario World is fun but there's no comparison IMO. Mega Man 2 also feels faster than Mega Man 7 although Mega Man X feels fast still, it was clearly a design choice on SNES.
I love that you film the gameplay on a crt. Gives it a more authentic look.
I was going to leave a ‘Super underrated channel’ comment for this vid, but I think this pretty much covers it!
SNES is the pinnacle of 2D gaming in my opinion (although the Saturn was very good at that as well) so I'd have to go SNES. I also think its so-so to average games are better whereas the *best* games on each system are pretty comparable if that makes sense
Music genres on older systems for me:
NES music: Chiptune
SNES: Orchestral/Rock/Jazz
Genesis: Metal/Grunge/Rock/Hip hop
Yeah, I can understand how for some people the decrease in difficulty is welcome :)
Had a SNES in the 90s but I am willing to try both now.
My first console was NES, second is Sega Genesis
Awesome content, man. I love your wacky sense of humor.
Thank you!
NES for the WIN! - In fact, I went from NES to Sega Genesis and completely skipped Super Nintendo...Except for when i was at my buddies house who had it. I do appreciate the Super Nintendo however. It did have some good games
I think there were actually quite a few people who did this, since the Genesis came out two years before.
just imagine that kid who asks for a super nintendo and gets the classic we already have a nintendo response. bb-b-ut it's SUPER. no son it's a scam.
That exact thing happened a lot back in the day. There were even news events based on interviews with parents about how they would boycott Nintendo products instead of buy a SNES.
My mom was dead set against getting me one until she saw one in action at Walmart one day and was wowed by the graphics.
Or you get the Top Loader NES when your old Grandmother thinks it’s the same thing! 😄😡
I'm snes all the way, I wish I could get into the nes. I love the history and watching other people play but it's a difficult barrier for me to get into, mainly the lack of direction, I love games but I'm not very good so I usually skip the nes games
your humor makes these so much better, I love it
The lack of direction definitely creates a curve to get over. Glad you're enjoying the vids :)
Nostalgia for the NES is huge for those who had it. I've noticed that maybe more than any other console.
"Super Nintendo Sega Genesis when I was dead broke man I couldn't picture this"
50 inch screen money-green leather sofa i got two rides a limousine wit tha chauffeur
A classic song :)
I had (still do) an Atari 2600 and was jealous of the NES till I got one. The NES was my gateway drug into what I’ve become today as a collector.
(That's just 2 out of 25 console/handheld collections!)
Love the channel! Catching up on some of your older videos since I only discovered your channel in the last year probably and you have a great entertaining formula and easy familiar topics that are very relatable. Keep up the great work!
I wish you had a second channel called super retro bird lol I cannot get enough of your content
I love the NES, but if I had to choose between the two, I like the SNES a tad more.
I like hearing when people say they prefer NES more, even though I like SNES more myself. Probably because I still like the NES a lot!
Good ol' Capcom!
NES vs Super NES. The answer: both!
Damn Right!
Thank you! I revisit Battletoads every once in a while. So, it's just a matter of time :)
The NES dog bone controller is pretty great. I need to pick another one of those up. Thanks for the video.
Thanks for watching. Yeah, the dog bone is for people who love the SNES controller!
I still remember the first time my dad got me the super nintendo when i was in cuba for 20 bucks with a bunch of games
Wow. What a deal!
Genesis does what NintenDON'T
In general, I think the NES excelled at fast-paced, challenging action games, while the Super Nintendo's library skewed slower and gentler. Castlevania III versus IV is my classic example. I'm a NES guy first and foremost, but I can still acknowledge the greatness of stuff like Chrono Trigger.
The SNES has masterpeices like Super Metroid and Zelda, but something about the pickup and play games like balloon fight or bubble bobble are much more satisfying to me.
Eventually this guy will end up starting the Nintendo Civil Console War
The New Style NES top loader came out late in 1993 on my birthday, 2 years after the SNES released.
And never missed for him anymore ( even to remember it )
For me, the NES it's the best console of all time in everyway.
He said cut off at 16-bit and I was like thats me! But he meant the other way.
hahah it exists as a cutoff the way you're talking about too!
They're a pretty pivotal part of retro gaming in my opinion.
Haha.
great vid
hope your channel grows more
Thank you! Appreciate it :)
Well, it’s common sense. The SNES is more Super than the NES.
Super Retro Bird Spin off channel confirmed?
Amazing find: I bought a big lot of GB games and got my hands on a Not For Resale Pokémon Crystal, original battery still working!
Good job on those finds! Also, not sure what Super Retro Bird has up his sleeve.
@@RetroBirdGaming Hidden Lore confirmed? Game Theory? Film Theory? They will all be on it
I’m closing in on 40 so I’m old enough to have played the NES as a kid, but the SNES was actually my first childhood console so it has a ton of nostalgia for me.
I'm a fan of all three but Genesis is where my nostalgia hits the hardest.
I'm partial to the NES because it was the first console I've owned. My NES library is up to 165 games, while my SNES is only around 20.
Yeah, I think it's fair to say that you prefer the NES!
Great content!
Thank you!
I know this is a bit of a cop out answer but I love both. Both consoles came out before I was born. Generally I like the SNES more than the original although I do prefer the asethetic of the Super Famicom & Super Nintendo in Japan & Europe that we got here in North America.
Nothing wrong with that answer!
I've seen this same opinion from so many others!
Although NES gameplay was usually more difficult, I prefer the NES. Difficult but less complex than most SNES games. I like simplicity in my video games. But both are enjoyable.
Definitely NES because it re-started the game console industry in the U.S. and it had R.O.B. Never again will a console have a robot operating buddy.
Nintendo LABO is kind of close to having a robot operating buddy though!
