For me, mic 1 was best, really felt like I was right there with you. Although I must confess that often I watch your walks with the sound muted, listening to music with maybe a glass of single malt, puts me right in 'the zone'!
Yeah I liked mic 1 also. I prefer to hear all the sounds as that you hear, as loud as they actually are. Immersion is better as I take these on a walk on the treadmill ^_^
I can see where you'd use all three modes, but for normal filming I think Mic 2 is the best, though I like the "warmth" mic 4 brings. Mic 3 would be great for IRL or commentary.
for me Mic1 was by far the best, nice bright audio and good stereo, I really felt as if I was really there. Mic 2 - 4 were more muffled with less hf response, felt a bit dead. mic 4 was the best of these, Mic 3 had a weird noise or echo going on. Mic 2 was ok, picked up less of the background conversation, which I know some will prefer as its less distracting. listened using JBL earbuds - so Mic 1 might be better for countryside or night time walks, 2 or 4 for noisy street walks. 3 did not work at all. Good to see you back..
Gracias!!
Professional audio guy here with a high-end setup. The AT9946CM (Mic 4) still sounds more natural and immersive than the M1 in its most natural mode (Mic 1). However, those practical advantages of the M1 are substantial. I don't think most people will care, especially if they're using laptops/tablets/phones to watch. No need for LC mode (Mic 2) on the M1 since it already has a weaker low frequency response compared to the AT mic. NC mode (Mic 3) adds a ton of artifacts (predictably) and kills immersion, but I'm sure it would be great for making speech clear in noisy environments. The AT mic (Mic 4) really does capture the atmosphere in a more believable way, but it would also require the right kind of audio setup to appreciate, so I think you shouldn't hesitate to switch to the M1. It's perfectly good for this content, and the convenience/versatility will be great.
PC-Soundcard AXAGON ADA-71 + HeadPhones Audio-Technica ATH-A550Z Mic 1 and 4 are clearest. Mic 2 capture a lot of city noise hum, not plesasant for my ears :) TV + Samsung HW-Q60B 5.1 setup Mic 1 and 4 are pretty similar. I also like mic 2, sound pretty realistic and noise is a lot less obvious, maybe even add to realistic. Mic 2 can be interesting at countryside, capturing more "nature" background. Best Japan walking channel, thanks for your work.
Дорогой Rambalac, oчень приятно снова слышать Вас! (Продолжаем in English... 😁) The ECM-M1 in normal stereo mode is an improvement over the AT imho. I see less low-frequency rumbling out of the box (no need for the less natural-sounding low cut filter in the tested environment) and also I can hear and see a much better correlated stereo signal (good for summing to mono and good for joint-stereo compression, commonly used by lossy audio codecs). Compared to the AT it is a bit more on the warm side sound-wise (without a loss in the highs) which may also prove easier on the ears, especially at 2-3 kHz. The noise-cancelling mode is outright terrible, it relentlessly produces tonal artifacts, even low ones like @21m46s. (A distraction even from a voice one might want to be listening to...) So - congratulations to the new normal, the ECM-M1 pure stereo mode. ✨🥇✨ Желаю вам добра, любви и счастья! 🙏🙏🙏
My take is: Mic 1: To much feed sounds Mic 2: Had a "whine" to it all over in different areas so not part of background noise. However, not to bad for a cityscape or ASMR type feel Mic 3: Going to sound off but prefer this to most due to it cuts the sounds that a normal ear hides for us. So sounds a bit more natural. Though it did have a few drawbacks Mic 4: Was a good mix of all the mics in one spot. Probably what a listening junkie likes since it picks up all the noise even if a human ear would ignore it and plays them. The closest to what most think is "Natural Sound" My .02 cents whereas I'm just glad you are posting!
Mic 3 seems definitely the worst to me, so maybe 2 and 4? We'll listen once more at night (using my son's ''better'' equipment 😅) I really enjoyed this ''walk around the clock💚'', and its timing 🏙 !!
Thank you for showing my favorite corner in Tokyo. The Nissan Crossing in Ginza. My absolute favorite! The Seiko clock and the Nissan show room and the mysterious gorgeous bldg directly across from Seiko and Nissan. I finally found out it holds a fish museum and it is as gorgeous as the bldg itself. Pewdepie toured it and I'm putting it on my bucket list. Thanks for all your ramblings across Japan Rambalac! I'm a devoted fan. ❤❤❤
Добрый вечер, Rambalac! Спасибо за прогулку, с удовольствием покружила по кварталу, рассматривая витрины и фасады, и открытые лица людей) и слушая микрофоны) для городской прогулки мне больше понравился первый - там все шумы - как есть)
In these conditions I prefer Mic 2, it captures ambient sounds without capturing as much nearby private conversation. Mic 4 is also good but sounds slightly more compressed. The noise cancellation of Mic 3 seems more suitable to videos where you intend to record sounds from a specific person or thing and want to eliminate the background noises of the city. I am interested in your findings when you test in a more windy environment to see how the settings compare.
Mic3 - показалось, как будто уши заложило при посадке самолета :) Mic1 - все отлично, только чувствительность очень высокая и в тихих местах слышно даже дыхание, Mic2 наверное для меня оптимальный вариант. Thank you!
I prefer mic2 cuz it sound more detail in the surrounding. I like to listen the..."live sound?" I'm not sure how to say that in English, it like people's footsteps the sound of chatting or the car drive etc. It make me feel like I'm at that place, and relaxing enjoy the video. Thank you for bringing us great videos
Mic 1 mode, hands down, is the best. On monitor headphones, audio of cars passing in front of you at a crosswalk going from right to left, as well as people talking with different conversations on either side at the same time - was all perfect. Just my opinion! Keep up the great work! 👍
Mic 1 seems clearly the most true to life / realistic and captures far more detail in background noise which really adds interest to the video. If you're going for realism then definitely Mic 1 in my opinion. However if you want the slightly more dreamlike style of floating through a city without needing to be 100% authentic I'd say Mic 2 followed by Mic 4. The sound is less natural to my ears and cuts out more background noise but they do seem to accentuate the bass a bit more. Mic 3 is too muffled underwater sounding for my liking, background noise is almost non existent. As an example Mic 1 at 8:50 is FAR more realistic than Mic 4 at 40:20 to my ears. For most vehicles in a city environment the dominant noise is that of the tires on the road and air flowing over the vehicle, Mic 1 captures that perfectly. I also for example, love the details like the crazy laughter picked up round 9:02 by Mic 1.
I really like mic 1 because it's a familiar sound and I like all the details it picks up. Mic 4 is a good option for something that picks up almost as much but is softer and has less noise. I think I might still prefer 1, even though it can get tiring, but I'd be happy with 4.
In my very cheap headphones, I liked 1 the best, then 4, then 2, then 3. (Really, 1 and 4 are both great, 4 is a more "sophisticated" sound, but 1 seems closer to "as is") Bf listening in much more advanced setup gives slight preference to 4. Hope this helps!
Using a pair of AKG's (my favorites). Volume (loud) the same for all four tests, Mic 1 seemed filled with sounds I would expect to hear, especially backgrounds. The voices behind you were good, ambient sounds came at me from all directions and yet were distinct as far as direction and of the 4 Mic 1 pleased me the most. Second was Mic 4. The other 2 not so much as they seemed to mute or miss a lot of ambience. Thanks for the video :)
For me, mic 2 had a different atmosphere and better suited for noisier areas by focusing mostly on what was in front of you and dampening the wider ambient sounds. Perhaps mic 1 is better for less urban areas. Mic 2 was definitely more pleasant comparing the atmosphere in the last 2 mins of walking for either. Thank you for sharing this.
Tx Ram for doing the hard yards in equipment selection. I really like the current setup you have from gimble mic lens and camera body you spent the big dollars so we can buy knowing that it's going to perform . Love you video and audio quality top job buddy. I'm for mic 1 wold be good for the windy Forrest test to see how wind noise effects the quality but the first set up sound great for me
for me it's a mix between mic 1 and 4, I like how you can hear everything with mic 1 but I also like how while you can't hear as much it's super clear in comparison, though that could just be since the walks were recorded at different times leading to varied results
Glad to see you testing new equipment, does this mean you plan to continue making videos? Mic 1 and mic 4 were best for me - as they capture everything and don't overly compress and distort (like mic3). - 4 is probably my favorite as it's the least overwhelming whilst still capturing everything mic 2 is good but takes away so much background noise it makes the city seem like a ghost town
Hi Rambalac, I continue to love your channel and appreciate greatly all the hard work. Mic 4 is my overall favorite, it has a spacious sound with natural low bass extension. Mic 1 is very detailed but somewhat nasal? Mic 2 as well. 3 has a very easy-to-listen-to nature, but is less sensitive perhaps to quieter environmental sound? Mic 4 is the best of all on my home theater system that is better than average.
Mic 3 has washed out background sounds, but like you said, it does make human speech clearer. Mic 4 seems too bassy which doesn't seem normal. You know the sound the car tires make when its at speed? I like Mic 2 better because it cuts that tire sound out, seems to me it's something we can do less with. Thank you for letting us participate in your testing.
Granted I have a tin ear but to me MIC 4 setting was the best. Both 1 and 2 there was this 'humm' or 'hiss' that was more prevenlent. 3 isn't what i'd want in a walking video.
I think I like Mic 2 the most. Mic 1 is really bright, almost too much so. I initially didn't like Mic 1, but I also feel like it's kind of genuine to how the background chaos in a city feels. Mic 3 feels very muffled, it's my least favorite. Mic 4 is a little like 3, but it's doing a better job and yet I don't feel as if I'm hearing thing that are close, only farther away things.
mic 4 seemed to pick up the city ambience in a nice tone the best, which is the main appeal to me for these types of videos. mic 1 seems to be more clear but everything feels higher tone in my opinion, at least for the city videos i prefer mic 4 the best realistically though i feel like if you didnt label the microphones at all itd be VERY hard for me to tell any differences haha
I am interested to see which you prefer in the end! I liked number one- it felt like really being there. I almost turned around to see if anyone was behind me lol Number four was also nice, open but not too open.
Hello 😊 mic 2 is maybe a little more detailed….. (open) but mic 1 is also very good. Mic 3 is no good. I use 5.1 speaker setup , with mic 2 , I got very good sound in all speakers. 😊👌 Thank you for sharing . Best wishes Ivar (Norway)
mic1 is what i think we're used to hearing in your vids. it's nice and clear, but the stereo image is a bit hyped. i heard cars panning across the speakers before the car actually moved across the screen. mic2 makes the street sound a little lifeless. the HPF setting would be good for windy days or locations like the beach, but it takes some life out of the city. mic3 has that unnatural underwater noise cancellation artifacting i don't like. my least favorite out of the bunch. mic4 sounds pretty good. it's doesn't have the top end of mic1, but still seems to have enough detail and sounds a little smoother than mic1. i think i'd like to hear more with this mic vs mic1. :)
Noise canceling is always a funny thing. Your eyes see something that should be making noise but you barely ear anything. Recently i walked by a man mowing his lawn with electric lawnmower and my mind seemed to take a minute to make out what was going on. I can see a purpose for each mic mode.
In my opinion, mic #1 was the clearest sounding microphone with the most transparent stereo panorama. Second place for me was #4, third place was #2 and mic #3 really sounded bad. It sounded like a noise canceling microphone, but it garbled like recording under water. A very unpleasant effect.
Both mic1 and mic4 are great and sound as if I am there, but my personal preference is mic1. With mic1, the sound of cars driving is not as loud as with mic4, and the sound of people talking can be heard more clearly. Mic4 might be better suited for other shooting scenes, but for Ginza, mic1 is more suitable.
I must admit, I much prefer Mic 1. It seems so much cleaner in quality and warmer in tone. Mic 2 seems to have the gain turned up too much. Yes, I realise I am about to use the wrong phrase here - I am much more used to dealing with photography, so I am using a term from there, rather than videography or audiology - if it were a photograph, I would say it had "too much noise". Mic 3 seemed muffled - as though the mic had a sock over it, or I was listening to it through a wall or something. Mic 4 seemed to be between 1 and 2.
please use noice cancellation mics its really good i regularly watch your videos and they are amazing thankyou for giving all your audience japan free from their home arigato
What polar pattern did you use on the Sony please? edit: I see now that you use stereo. I would like to know how the walks would sound with bi-directional L/R pattern to get somewhat binaural experience.
I think the noise cancelling is great when you need your voice to be heard more clearly. However for your walks you want ALL the noise in the surroundings, every cricket, every footstep, every scraping sound of the city.. Appart from that i think mic 1 was the winner, it picks up tons of sidenoise, voices and the immersion gets more real. BTW, i agree that more testing should be done, and windy situations is important for mics.. so look forward to that
That's a very good comparison, on the field testing, I like it. Here's my two (hundred) cents on it: The AT mic may be old, and its frequency specs are not great, but Audio-Technica is not to be underestimated. The AT mic is fire, it produces a very clear stereo image. The Sony mic has much wider frequency range, but it is designed as a directional mic, meaning its main point is to only capture sound coming from certain directions. Noise cancelling would greatly assist at making the speech clear. However, as mics are placed flat, there's no chance of getting anything resembling HRTF from it, making for a washy stereo. That stereo image is what gives the AT mic sound the feel of presence, as directions are separated by natural filtering. Sony almost sounds like it's mono. However, for speech recording ECM-M1 is the way to go. There's also a huge difference in how those mics approach the equal loudness target curve. This largely depends on the output device. The Sony mic sounds better with front speakers or headsets with emphasized "front" frequency response, which is more modern approach. That doesn't cancel out the washed stereo image. The AT mic sounds better with left-right stereo pair, or monitor type headsets with more flat frequency response. The best sound imho is the middle-ground between those mics. Regarding the cut, the point of low cut, analog or digital, is to do two things only: - cut everything below 20Hz, removing inaudible part and increasing average loudness for free with no drawbacks in typical scenarios; - cut below 70-150Hz to eliminate sound of wind blowing into the mic, but at the price of removing the natural bass and hum from the recording (for example the sound of a thunder even with a subwoofer won't be anywhere as impressive as without the cut). To compensate for the wind there's a puffy glove that often comes with the mic which is designed to resist the wind, but it's not perfect. Also, ECM-M1 is too good at capturing high frequencies, at 37:44 and beyond I could clearly hear the mosquito alarms.
mic 1 and 4 for me. mic 2 seems to have too much of a background noise. mic 3 seems to have the background noise suppressed? Just my opinion. Anyway, Glad to see you testing different equipment Rambalac!
Mic 4 was the least distracting while still feeling like you were there. Your decision Ram as you're the expert. Totally love your work. It's a lovely gift to so many people.🦘🦘🦘🐨🐨🇦🇺🇦🇺
Mic 1: I feel like you can hear more detail/more sounds, but it is a little harsh on the high end, and maybe less dynamic range? It would get tiring to listen to for a long period I think Mic 2: Feels less detailed than Mic 1, but more range. The louder/closer sounds stick out more against the background drone. Nicer to listen to over a long period of time Mic 3: Worst by far. Digital sounding artefacts in the audio. Mic 4: Similar to Mic 2, but with more pronounced low end? I thought it was too much bass, but then when I swapped back to Mic 2 it felt a little hollow, so both good/maybe personal preference
I wish youtube would step up the game and implement 6.1 surround. It is possible to record with a panoramic mic. I do have to give youtube props for video HDR if available it really makes colors look a lot better.
I'd say 2 is best, you can hear alot more detail in things going on around you 3 is worst which sacrifices small details in sound for noise suppression
I'm not sure your tests are very valid; mic 3 does sound a bit 'dead' but of course you were in a much quieter environment. A better test would be the four mics in the same place. That said, I always enjoy watching your videos (and I too sometimes have them muted!) and am always interested in how to control the sound. Always a fan!
The same route was walked with each mic at intervals of approximately 10-15 minutes, allowing for equipment changes, to help reduce as best as possible any differences in crowd noise levels.
Mic 1 feels like it is capturing too much but not well enough when I listen to background noise. mic 2 is my preference since it has a good range, nice full sounds and spatial sounds are better. 3 is the worst to me as it feels like I am waiting for an echo that never comes. 4 is my second favorite, it feels very natural but something sounds 'off' to me.
Thank you for sharing these sound tests with us. In my humble opinion, micro number 1 is the most appropriate, as it captures ambient sounds more accurately and is more realistic. The other 3, have some kind of background noise that bothers my ears. It is clear that hearing capacities are different among people. Take care and keep up your great work. ✌🏻
3rd one definitely sounds the worst, the noise reduction is too aggressive. I like the 4th one the best, it has the best tonality to my ears, sounds the most natural. The first two are a bit too "sharp", with a lot of treble and not much low-end.
mic4 the widest spectrum, with more low frequencies than AT and the same amount of highs, very clean base maybe even better than AT. mic2 strongly cut low frequencies but not spoiling the listening of the base, better for interviews than for broad spectrum. mic3 they overdid it, it distorts the sound certainly the worst choice.
For me, it would have to be MIC 2 I have to say. I think MIC 3 and MIC 4 sort of dampen the sound a lot. I like being able to hear footsteps more audibly. It just feels right, since when you're walking, you do hear that stuff. So for me MIC 1 and MIC 2 would have to be the winners. I think they feel more authentic, personally!
#1 even though it seemingly picked up sound from all around, sometimes listening to conversations originating directly behind you were distracting. But the sound quality was crisp and clear and did not devolve into a constant "whooshing" ambient curtain of traffic and crowd noise.
I am from Mexico I love your videos 👌🏼 Mics 1 crisp sounds, it’s feels the surrounding, the atmosphere of the city 2 was more muffled on the details if the traffic and ambiance I watch it wit headphones 🎧
I like the fact you still experimenting your audio quality. That means the passion is still here🔥
Yeah, he has some of the most crisp video of all - one of my absolute fav 'walking' channels. He has the best audio and video, hands down.

Mic 2 es mi favorito, es un sonido suave sin perder lo escencial de la caminata.
Mic1 might be the best. I’m not that confident about my decision. I hope the choice I gave could be helpful
Even after the 2nd watching and listening on better speakers we still liked Mic 4 and 2 best 🍀👍

for me it's a mix between mic 1 and 4, I like how you can hear everything with mic 1 but I also like how while you can't hear as much it's super clear in comparison, though that could just be since the walks were recorded at different times leading to varied results
To me with headphone, my favorite is Mic1, I can feel the surrounding, I can hear someone talking behind me, feels like I'm really at the place!
Спасибо за прекрасное видео. Успехов в творчестве и всего самого хорошего.😊🚶🌸🍀
Спасибо за видео!
Mic 1 and Mic 2 for sure man!
Mic 1 for nature will be awesome....
Mic 2 for general use
Mic 4 sometimes seems off.... don't sounds natural.
Glad to see you testing new equipment, does this mean you plan to continue making videos?
Mic 1 and mic 4 were best for me - as they capture everything and don't overly compress and distort (like mic3). - 4 is probably my favorite as it's the least overwhelming whilst still capturing everything
mic 2 is good but takes away so much background noise it makes the city seem like a ghost town
Love it. Keep them coming 😘
我更喜欢1和4,1有更多细节,立体感强。4有更多低音,比如汽车引擎声更还原。🙂
I like the test videos. I think mic 4
Mic 1 sounds the best. But I can hear the noise floor on all the mics. What preamp are you using?
🎤 Mic 2 🙌
mic 4 seemed to pick up the city ambience in a nice tone the best, which is the main appeal to me for these types of videos. mic 1 seems to be more clear but everything feels higher tone
in my opinion, at least for the city videos i prefer mic 4 the best
realistically though i feel like if you didnt label the microphones at all itd be VERY hard for me to tell any differences haha
Love it!!!!
mic1 is what i think we're used to hearing in your vids. it's nice and clear, but the stereo image is a bit hyped. i heard cars panning across the speakers before the car actually moved across the screen.
mic2 makes the street sound a little lifeless. the HPF setting would be good for windy days or locations like the beach, but it takes some life out of the city.
mic3 has that unnatural underwater noise cancellation artifacting i don't like. my least favorite out of the bunch.
mic4 sounds pretty good. it's doesn't have the top end of mic1, but still seems to have enough detail and sounds a little smoother than mic1. i think i'd like to hear more with this mic vs mic1.
2 I think but it’s hard to tell.
please use noice cancellation mics its really good i regularly watch your videos and they are amazing thankyou for giving all your audience japan free from their home arigato
I like the wideness of Mic 2. Mic 4 also capture wide but nearby noise is a bit too loud.
MIC2和MIC4我都很喜歡。
What polar pattern did you use on the Sony please? edit: I see now that you use stereo.
I would like to know how the walks would sound with bi-directional L/R pattern to get somewhat binaural experience.
Mic 2 was better imo, it didn't sound so high pitched and is easier on the ears 🙂👍🏻 awesome video
Here's my two (hundred) cents on it:
The AT mic may be old, and its frequency specs are not great, but Audio-Technica is not to be underestimated.
Regarding the cut, the point of low cut, analog or digital, is to do two things only:
- cut everything below 20Hz, removing inaudible part and increasing average loudness for free with no drawbacks in typical scenarios;
- cut below 70-150Hz to eliminate sound of wind blowing into the mic, but at the price of removing the natural bass and hum from the recording (for example the sound of a thunder even with a subwoofer won't be anywhere as impressive as without the cut).
It's a lovely gift to so many people.🦘🦘🦘🐨🐨🇦🇺🇦🇺
I will watch it on my cinema sound system 1st so then i will add comment .I enjoy this channel not on mobile but on TV 😋
Mic 1: I feel like you can hear more detail/more sounds, but it is a little harsh on the high end, and maybe less dynamic range? It would get tiring to listen to for a long period I think
Mic 2: Feels less detailed than Mic 1, but more range. The louder/closer sounds stick out more against the background drone. Nicer to listen to over a long period of time
Mic 3: Worst by far. Digital sounding artefacts in the audio.
Mic 4: Similar to Mic 2, but with more pronounced low end? I thought it was too much bass, but then when I swapped back to Mic 2 it felt a little hollow, so both good/maybe personal preference
mic 4 for my preference
I wish youtube would step up the game and implement 6.1 surround. It is possible to record with a panoramic mic. I do have to give youtube props for video HDR if available it really makes colors look a lot better.
I like the 3rd mic
I'd say 2 is best, you can hear alot more detail in things going on around you
3 is worst which sacrifices small details in sound for noise suppression
😅i found mic 4 to be the best to capture the city noises more perfectly!
ชอบ mic 4 ฟังสบายหูดี
se você está fazendo testes com microfones, imagino q vai retomar as filmagens do canal. ou eu estou errado? 😅
Mic 1 seems to be the best than all the other modes. Mic 2 and 3 sounds muffled and compressed.
Is this outputting digital or analog to camera? I've seen some Sony camera and mic configuration support digital
Mic 2!
#1 even though it seemingly picked up sound from all around, sometimes listening to conversations originating directly behind you were distracting. But the sound quality was crisp and clear and did not devolve into a constant "whooshing" ambient curtain of traffic and crowd noise.
I hope to compete with you one day! hhaha Maybe with a smaller less expensive set up tho. 😅
Like an Osmo Pocket, or something.
I am from Mexico I love your videos 👌🏼
Mics 1 crisp sounds, it’s feels the surrounding, the atmosphere of the city
2 was more muffled on the details if the traffic and ambiance
I watch it wit headphones 🎧
