I've been meaning to do a tribute about Theon for awhile. I think the character arch of Theon is by far one of the best ones in the show. I don't think we really appreciate him as a character and I hope with this we can all see where he comes from and where he'll end up.
and we must also underline Alfie Allen's acting. He is just amazing.

Theon is such a strong character because I think a lot of people have been in a similar position. Realizing that you made the wrong choice and that you are truly paying for it. That you are truly unhappy with your mistake.
I love how Ned Stark was killed in the first season but his morals, his teachings and his way to keep honour still lives among the Starks. RIP Theon you are a good man

I definitely agree with you. People dismiss Theon as a character so easily when in truth he has such a great character development.
I agree completely he such a complex character if u think about it. He a person who grew up always fighting himself cause he always felt tore between being a Greyjoy or a Stark. Then when he picks he loses everything he holds deer only when he gets footing again he feels horrible cause he has to live with himself for making the wrong one then he does leaves his sister to die in the hands of uncle like he did back when she tried to save him. Only for him to try and successfully save her.
He's one of the most complex characters in the entire series. His story arc has always been my favorite.
Alfie Allen is one of the most under rated actors on the show. He has had one of the most complex character arcs to tackle, and he nailed it, going from a cocky young lad who sought glory, to a tortured prisoner who has lost his mind and lost free will, to someone who has finally found themselves and knows their true allegiances.
And his acting has been terrific.
Tbh I think the writers kinda shafted him till now. When a character always loses all the time it just kinda gets boring, which his arc has been since season 4. Never cared about his scenes since. And he kinda saves Yara really easily and really fast, you can't really enjoy him finally succeeding, hell even he looks miserable. Its just...weird? If Jon had a rescue mission it'd be the whole episode, but Theon I guess only gets 5 minutes after 4 seasons of beatdown?
Next to Jaime, I feel the show gave Theon the 2nd best character story arc. He will always be a Starkjoy.

Grey Stark, for sure. It's even a potential new name for him, depending on how things shake up in the Great War. If the karstarks is any indication of how the name would be written, it would definitely be Greystark or Grey Stark and not Starkjoy.

He was Zuko of Game of Thrones. His own father and sister despised him, and they were vicious. He had to live in enemy lands, yet his life in there was better than his life in his home. He had a better sister figure than his own sister. He tried to please his father, so he betrayed the people who were closest to him. He regretted this, and swore to change for the better. He was lost for years. And most importantly, he took his honor back.

Theon died more a Stark than any other Stark. He never felt comfortable been a Greyjoy, he always had Ned & Robb in his mind; he missed the direction along the way, but rose to be the Stark he was always meant to be.

Sansa has good development too but theon, jaime, sandor have more interesting development.
He is my favorite character....he has the biggest character arc in the show. He was a huge failure. He was castrated and tortured . He was outcast. He did not have an identity, and then stripped of whatever identity he had. And then he redeemed himself. He will be one of the unsung heroes of the show.
I literally get triggered when people hate him....he is one of the best characters imo.
Just like Jaime you can't ignore all the bad actions he's done despite his justifications. They want to redeem themselves but you can't say others are wrong in getting angry based on their past actions (ie Jaime attempt to kill Bran or Theons betrayal of the Starks). Just because you say you are a change person, doesn't mean people will forgive you
I agree with you. He lost his focus. He always felt confused and tried to redeem his confidence with prostitutes. But he saved the Starks. He had hoped Robb would win and he could get a decent place, I think. But it became a disaster. I respect him for choosing Yara as thr Queen and convincing the masses of it. Not once but many times over and over again. Good that he abandoned the ship otherwise Yara wouldn't have been saved. He is truly a Stark and a Greyjoy. He has the goodness of both the sides.

@Super I get the feeling that Theon falling into the Starks hands was just an unfortunate result of the failed uprising. Robert being the bull-headed prick he pretty much was all the time, having it his way, Theon would've suffered a worse fate if Ned hadn't intervened and taken him as his "prisoner". The reality is that Ned simply gave Theon the best life he could without betraying Robert.

One of the best actors on this show, I don't defend with what his character did but I do think he had awfully hard choices to make in a very very cruel world

You have to feel sorry for him. Despite living among the starks basically all his life that he can remember, he‘s still treated like an outsider, and even though him and Robb are like brothers, Robb does remind him how winterfell is not his home. Then when he comes home to his father, he is greeted with no warmth, and his father even seems displeased to see him. He just wanted to belong somewhere, and he ended up rectifying his mistakes in S8, one of the few characters d&d wrapped up nicely.

My poor Theon, so fragile, so insecure, so confused. He only needed to be accepted and loved. His redemption at the end has meant everything to him. I'm agree with the person who saying that he was the most underrated character on the show and Alfie is still too much underrated too about his acting in GoT, he was great..

Oh, it's not over yet, not until he is dead. I hope he'll get the chance to return the favour to Jon, help him realise he is Targaryen and Stark both, and that Nedd WAS his father. Jon's likely going to need that with the revelation he's just been given. And even from there, I imagine Theon will have to put his blade behind his purpose too. And probably die for it.

just saw theons death , may he rest in peace , he was really a good man but he was also vulnerable . he wasn't respected by his father or people (the ironborn) and even though the starks loved him as one of their own, as their brother, they kept reminding him that he really wasn't one of them. Theon was lost because of this , he knows that hes a prince but yet hes not sitting on a thrown he was being another lords ward. He was just looking for his place in the world, for the respect that he deserved but was not given. And even though he betrayed the starks, got tortured physically and mentally and was still disrespected (and then hated) by many he still faced all of his obstacles , mistakes, fears , regrets and amended his wrong choices and died a hero in front of the knight king while defending the starks. RIP Theon you died as a prince, a hero ,, a man.
My favorite character. What a character ark. A stark by loyalty but an iron born by unbreakable strength. One mistake he made doesn't define him. He is a true friend, an honourable man and mist importantly a man who will rise no matter how many timhe falls down.

This video really made me realize just how bad Theon really had it. I was upset when he betrayed Rob but looking back the Starks never really treated him that great either. No wonder he's confused with his identity. Great job on the video 👏!
Cat and some of the Stark kids, yes. But Robb treated him like a brother and Ned treated him like his own son. I think Theon wanted to be a Stark more then he wanted to be a Greyjoy. He saw the loyalty, love, and warmth in that family.

Theon was much closer to the starks than to his biological Family. No wonder why he said that his real father lost his dead in King's landing and No wonder why He was so loyal to the Starks ( until He betrayed them to make his father proud ), because He felt actually home at Winterfell, that's why it hit him so much, when he heard this words from Robb, who was like a brother for him. Even when He betrayed the Starks He realized He chose the wrong side and should have been with Robb instead. Ned was more of a father to him than his biological father ever was. Ned threated him kindly and with respect, unlike his biological father, who saw him as a stark in the first place and not like one of his own. And just because Robb was mean by saying "it's not your House" doesn't mean he meant it this way. They grew Up together and were close. Theon was the one, Robb trusted the Most, that's why He was so mad and upset about him that he betrayed the starks. He saw him as a part of the starks, and when He said " it's Not your House" he meant by blood, which is obviously true. Robb wasn't the one with the biggest empathy anyway. He also called Jon "Snow", reminded him often that he is not a stark. But He still loved him as his Brother, just like Theon.
Will yeah but Robb was his brother from another mother and eventually the starks accepted him as one of there own he may have been born a Greyjoy but he died honourably and a hero like a stark would and he died a stark and proud who just wanted to defend his brother bran stark.

And here probably the best written character in the entire series. Putting internal conflicts and more complicated issues than the typical heroes in the series
Can we just appreciate that even the name Greyjoy seems hint at somebody who's stuck between two separate identities? Grey being the color that is both black and white, and Theon being the character that is both Stark and Greyjoy.

Totally I thought he portrays a more real personality and development than other characters.
Theon was taken as captive in house Stark in his childhood. He grew up with the Starks , he loved them and respeced them but was always told his real identity. And when he went to his family, his father despised him for something he was not responsible for. So he decided go build his own identity and as a result ended in Ramsay's dungeons. Was tormented both physically and emotionally. Still he mustered strength and saved Sansa. He went back to his family, supported and saved his sister and finally died for the Starks. He was confused about his identity and helpless due to the his circumstances. You gotta feel for Theon. HE WAS A GOOD MAN.
S8 was horrible in my honest opinion, but Theon was its best part. What a great character and a great portrayal by Alfie. Great video mate!

All the arcs in Season 8 were terrible even. Yeah including Theon, he was a hostage not a Stark. The Hound was kept around for fanservice. Jaime's arc went into the dumpster. Sansa got away with stupid shit because of bad writing. And Jorah was fine I guess.

The ritual itself reinforces the idea that once you've experienced death, or in this case drowning, nothing is to be feared. Essentially, the speaker of this phrase is saying he/he has nothing left to lose. As German philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche says: "That which does not kill us, makes us stronger." (Also paraphrased by Kelly Clarkson lol)

Everyone goes on about Jamies development as a character, but I think Theon's character, hands down, has the best development in the series.

Last night's episode really put an awesome bow on Theon's arc, getting his sister, now queen's, approval to help defend his home. It may not be his birth home, but its the home he grew to love.

Theon was always my favourite character - I empathised with him the most; I was brought up between two divorced parents that used me a weapon. I was made to choose and feel like a prisoner at home as a child - now I am older and wise enough to decide who and what I am. It's hard to understand how much damage a dysfunctional family upbringing has on a child; we have trouble understanding our own feelings and struggle to form relationships.
Theons story full of love, sadness, revenge and vengenance. After all of the terrible things he did and others did to him, he still fighting deep inside. Thats just so touching. He is a great character. I really want to see his reborn.
Theon has come so far, I actually don't get all the hate towards him. I always liked him. He made mistakes like an ordinary person but came through it, survived and feels both a Greyjoy and Stark! Amazing tribute!

They ruined it if you know anything about Theon and like stories beyond bullshit fairytale storytelling. Theon's arc is about identity not redemption, because he truly didn't owe the Starks anything to be honest.

Family doesn't end in blood, and it doesn't start there either. Theon learned that the hardest way anyone possibly could.
The Starks weren't his family however, nor did they treated like family, Theon was completely justified in taking Winterfell. In fact he should have set it ablaze and take Bran and Rickon as hostages, his pride got in the way of that.
Cant watch this without crying in the end. Theon one of the best character development of the show.

I love how early on in the series, Theon took insult when people implied that he's more Stark than Greyjoy but began carrying his Stark-ness as a badge of honor towards the end.

I felt more for Theon than most the other characters in the whole show, simply on the fact that he was the most honest story out them all.
One of the best character arcs in the whole series as well as one of the best actors. Alfie Allen did a more than amazing job with this role.
I loved the scene with Theon and Jon because of the similarities between them with neither of them being Ned's sons but both having him as their father figures. Best character development I've ever seen, period. Such a realistic character just trying to do right by everyone. Making mistakes and fixing them. Hes come so far since season 1 and will always be my fav character.

Honestly Theon's story is the main reason I couldn't re-watch GoT.

You can't understand Theon's story if you only saw Game of Thrones once... Theon is not the character we focus during our first watching, but he became my favourite character when I rewatched it, because you notice things thats you did not, and you have a fresh point of view on him.
I watch full GOT 4times and u need to watch again because it's a good serie 😊

Theon is my favorite and he went through so much and I always understood his POV and his motives. It sucks that people bash his character and cant see everything he went through.
I loved his story and his journey though, it was so well fleshed out imo and he truly redeemed himself in my eyes. Alfie is phenomenal.
