Brilliant!!! Great underwater footage. When visiting my daughter on Vancouver Island I saw a salmon run. I had been used to seeing salmon running in big wide and deep rivers in Scotland, so it was a surprise to me to see these big fish in a small shallow creek that you could easily jump over. Somehow to me that was a disconcerting image...for the usual images we see are of majestic salmon leaping over a raging torrent to make it upstream, yet here they were with their bellies scraping the gravel and their backs out of the water still struggling upwards and onwards.
+OldGardenerGuy Ya, some of them spawn on some crazy places. If I'd been filming a bit later in the year, I could have gotten some of that footage, but I wanted to get this done by Halloween. Thanks for watching.
Thanks. I've been laying low for a bit. I'm hoping that by slowing down my video output, I will have the creative energy to do some more creative educational stuff like this.
Great video, I mean really well done and very informative. I love the full cycle that the salmon bring to rivers everywhere. Thanks for taking the time to make this video.
5:26 ha! i knew this zombie fish thing was real. great job on the documentary. i learn something every video on this channel. don't forget to set that clock back.
+smetlogik Thanks! It's always good to know people are learning something from my videos. Thanks for the reminder. I didn't notice the time change in the Spring. My phone/alarm updated automatically. I just noticed that I was tired and that it was an unusually dark morning.
Great video. Very informative... Do they really start to rot as soon as they get into fresh water? Fascinating, but grotesque might be an over statement. What did this pink hump back salmon ever do to you? Lol
+John “survivor johnny” Tewelow On my first day of working for the Department of Fisheries and Oceans, a salmon I was trying to tag jumped off the tagging table and hit my in the eye with his snaggly teeth. It got me a big cut on the eye. That was a coho though.
+The Last Grownup in the Woods LOL I saw this before I saw your message, Sorry about that. I am getting this in the playlist right now. When I watched this the 1st time I was really wanting to add this. Its that good. :-)
+Madison C Iowa Thanks! I should also thank you. If it wasn't for you spooky video playlist, this would have been a regular old salmon video. I'm pretty happy with how the zombie theme worked out. Thanks for inspiring this video.
smetlogik sent me. May I ask what microphone and recording devices you used for your voice overs? I dig the "swimming dead" angle. This video is also dense with information and a good educational piece. Really fantastic stuff here I'll sub and watch some more. I did some snorkeling in the puget sound in a bay with a stream that empties into it that has some salmon (coho?) that spawns in it (ua-cam.com/video/b6hRRasmB0g/v-deo.html). I'm hoping this year I'll get my timing right and be able to swim with them as they school in the bay before going up into the stream to spawn. I've been to other rivers and seen spawning behavior, seen reds, and everything in your video is spot on and well done.
+technoendo I use a ZOOM H1 Handy Recorder. I have a lapel mic that I bought to use with it, but I prefer the mic that comes with it. In videos that I'm actually in, I'll duct tape it to my selfie stick or to the camera. I've been pretty happy with it. I was a pretty decent price too. I also dropped it into a merky pond. It spend about a minute in there, turned on. It still works just fine. It's indestructible.
