      ***** You don't need to be. The beautiful hymn along with the dream-like visuals paint a really masterful picture. In fact the majority of the commentary of the game was about the evils of organized religion and the countless atrocities it justifies.
      You play as an anti-christ that the antagonist made up to control the population of Columbia through fear and lies to benefit his own ends and subjugate it's people for power. It's a beautiful lesson but, unfortunately, one that most won't pick up on, willingly or otherwise.

    Video games need to be recognized as art. People love to hate on video games, claim it makes people violent, waste time, etc. Masterpieces like this need to be brought to the spotlight. I will never understand how people can scapegoat video games when the film industry comes out with the brainless trash it does these days.

      It's all art. Movies are beautiful for their cinematography and story telling and smart use of audio. This game is an amazing example of a video game being portrayed artistically. The colors, the music, the characters, the "constants and variables" idea. It's amazing, this song alone basically describes the entire plot of this game

    • @hawaiiansouljah
      @hawaiiansouljah 10 років тому +41

      Molle You Levine is shutting it down partially because of (maybe more than partially) money but essentially he is going to focus on download driven games with a narrative (in other words, making games with a story). Levine's sentiments echo that of Cliff Bleszinski. Bleszinski has himself stated that he feels that the gaming industry is doing nothing more than chasing profits and foresaking a quality gaming experience. Now if the creator of Gears of War is saying stuff like....trouble is on the horizon.
      With regard to Irrational though, I can only agree with gun1987 here....and this song is actually a fitting albeit hauntingly accurate send off to it.

    Bioshock infinite is a highly emotional game which etches itself into your memory because of the brilliant, moving storyline. Even this song has a great meaning as you understand that the 'circle' is the multiverse theory. Booker will never stop going back to Columbia, finding Elizabeth and learning about his past. Maybe not in one universe, but in infinite other universes, he will keep doing the same thing...over, and over, and over again. The circle will not be broken. Circles are INFINITE.
    Great work, Irrational Games. I'm so sad that you aren't around anymore, though. :(

    CHORUS:
    Will the circle be unbroken
    By and by, by and by?
    Is a better home awaiting
    In the sky, in the sky?
    In the joyous days of childhood
    Oft they told of wondrous love
    Pointed to the dying Saviour;
    Now they dwell with Him above.
    (Chorus)
    You remember songs of heaven
    Which you sang with childish voice.
    Do you love the hymns they taught you,
    Or are songs of earth your choice?
    (Chorus)
    ---
    FYI: Omitted are the leading verse and 2 afterwards..
    There are loved ones in the glory
    Whose dear forms you often miss.
    When you close your earthly story,
    Will you join them in their bliss?
    .
    .
    .
    You can picture happy gath'rings
    Round the fireside long ago,
    And you think of tearful partings
    When they left you here below.
    (Chorus)
    One by one their seats were emptied.
    One by one they went away.
    Now the family is parted.
    Will it be complete one day?

    It's funny how everyone's talking about Bioshock but don't think about what the song is actually saying. This song came out in 1907. It talks about death and heaven.
    It makes sense that it's in Bioshock infinite (I loved the game btw, excellent storyline) because its set in 1912 and talks of Booker's conversion and then creating a place that tries to resemble heaven. Even though those were not his real intentions. There were several remakes of the song but in Bioshock, it plays the original.

    Basically, it talks about loved ones passing away saying that the immediate family circle here on earth has been broken but will it be complete in heaven?

    It's not asking whether heaven exists but rather acknowledges that it does and will we join our loved ones in heaven? In parts of the song, it says "Do you love the hymns they taught you,
    Or are songs of earth your choice?"..."Here the circle has been broken-
    Will it be complete one day?"
    Probably hints do we love God more or the things this world and that based on our choices will we be reunited with our loved ones in heaven after we die. Because obviously, we all will die.
    I just thought it was an interesting song when I read the lyrics. Here's the lyrics btw:
    There are loved ones in the glory,
    Whose dear forms you often miss;
    When you close your earthly story,
    Will you join them in their bliss?
    Refrain (Chorus):
    Will the circle be unbroken
    By and by, by and by?-
    In a better home awaiting
    In the sky, in the sky.
    In the joyous days of childhood,
    Oft they told of wondrous love,
    Pointed to the dying Savior;
    Now they dwell with Him above.
    You remember songs of heaven
    Which you sang with childish voice,
    Do you love the hymns they taught you,
    Or are songs of earth your choice?
    You can picture happy gath’rings
    ’Round the fireside long ago,
    And you think of tearful partings,
    When they left you here below.
    One by one their seats were emptied,
    One by one they went away;

    I just finished this game this week including the dlc's and I was blown away by this game. I never felt anything like it before. When I first saw the floating city of Columbia I was so amazed that I wished the I could've been able to control the floating machine that brought you to Columbia. It was so beautiful, and when I thought it was over because when I was descending, then there comes the beautiful music and the beautiful church with lights, candles and the water at your feet, everything was perfect. But now, everytime I go here to listen to this song I can't shake away the feeling that its already over. I hate and like this feeling, when you finished a game where you get attached to the characters that when the game is over, you still want to see more of them, you want to go for more adventure.

    The feeling I got from the whole beginning segment is something I don't think I can describe here. I knew immediately I was going to love this game. Four years later, this still gives me chills.

    This was an old American civil war hymnal that gained in popularity until it was written in 1908. The song isn't very dogmatic, and by that I mean it's not shoving religion down your throat. Instead, it's just a... a recollection, a thought of olden days, those simple existential questions that we ask our selves from childhood that haunt us for life, an homage to those that have passed and desperate curiosity to know where they are... Yeah I kind of agree with you there. This game was very close to being perfection for me. There were just a few story elements that didn't sit well with me. They had everything there.... it's just that some of the story was pulled off kind of sloppy. For example (this is my biggest gripe with the game) why the hell did they make booker's birthday in 1874? He was only 16 at wounded knee, and 18 when he sold anna. Same goes for Comstock. He was only 19 when he founded Columbia. That just makes no sense to me. The developers should have made booker's/Comstock's birthday in 1864. Sorry just had to get that off my chest.

    • @PapaBadDadcumsuckgod
      @PapaBadDadcumsuckgod 9 років тому +2

      Rafael Lechado For me it comes down to how the story has an insane amount of plotholes, based entirely on the fact that they said there are infinite universes. There are infinite universes where comstock wins, there are infinite where none of this ever happens, yet them killing one booker is a huge deal? People being dead in one world being something that affects the others makes even less sense. If there are INFINITE universes, EVERYONE has died at least once, meaning everyone would be in that half dead state you see the soldiers in when you change universes, including booker. The story makes 0 sense, and on top of that the combat system is straight trash. They went from the health system, where if i take a hit thats an issue, thats permanent, i have to find and use med packs, to the Oh i got hit by a rocket? Let me just crouch over here and full shields. Carrying 2 weapons ruins the game as well, before i felt limited in ammo, sure id love to use the shotgun all day but i have to conserve my ammo, so ill use a gun that isnt quite my favorite, the other games made me use every gun just to conserve ammo, where as in infinite, i can just use the same 2 guns for the entire game. And the vigors seemed really underpowered and useless to me, i beat the game without ever really touching them.

      Well.. the sense of everything is that killing the "original" comstock all it will end, and for me, that makes sense, because well, he's the origin of all the story and drama, and in this scenario, if he never born, all will be erased

      @PapaBadDadcumsuckgod 9 років тому

      Rafael Lechado But with infinite universes, there are infinite more where the exact same events happened, with small changes, as well as universes where there are huge changes, like comstock winning. You can't change the story for an infinite string of universes, because every scenario exists.

    I’m 32. Been through a lot of shit in my life. But when I first heard this song I just sat there for 30 mins fascinated by the visuals and the music. Then I went straight to UA-cam and searched it because I knew there must of been many more people feeling the way I did and needed to hear it again. So thank you to the uploader for this wonderful piece of music and the visuals to go with it. Even more respect to the beautiful set of people that sang this song. I feel like this is what I would want my family to play at my funeral and I hope to god I hear this music as I enter heaven. Hopefully I get there. Or get to where ever I’m going. Anyway I’m high. Stay safe everyone. ✌🏽

    It's rare that I enjoy the intro/playable cutscene portions of a game more than the actual fighting. But damn if I wouldn't play a game that was nothing but exploring Columbia (or Rapture) during peacetime.

    • @Derrickstare
      @Derrickstare 9 років тому +4

      Wonka0111 absolutely. I'm hoping they create games like that some day. I love action, but personally I wouldn't mind if there wasn't any murder or killing or constant fighting and stimulation, but just exploring a detailed world like Columbia or Rapture. And if they spent less time working on combat mechanics, spells, and fighting, they'd have more time to spend on graphics and decorations haha.

    This game and the original Bioshock were two of the most phenomenal gaming experiences I could ever have imagined. Sure they both had their flaws but in my mind they're perfection. Thank you Ken Levine and your entire team for giving me two games I will NEVER forget.

    This is one of the few games i played not only for the genre (I'm not a big fan of Fps) but its story and the soundtrack, it makes you feel like you're playing with a movie. It's a perfect game, how i wish the next bioshock's will be as good as this and the first but i doubt it: Without Levine would be hard.

    This game is amazing, and the moment the parachute opens at the beginning I had chills from every cutscene and major event. Years later, after many awesome releases like The Phantom Pain, Fallout 4, etc this still ranks as my #1 pick as the most beautiful game in every aspect. My gf, and my brother and his gf would all watch me play like it was a movie. It's a legendary game and here's to a hopeful remaster for Xbox One.
