How Much Slower are Gravel Wheels on the Road?

    I have a regular route that I ride from home that uses roads, paths and bike ways. It has tight turns and pedestrians so with those variables I wondered which bike would be faster - a road bike or a gravel bike.
    The results might surprise you - they certainly surprised me!

    The best test is to put a road wheel on the front and a gravel wheel on the back and see which wheel finishes first

    I expect on an open road time trial the road wheels would be much faster but around town it is good to have the strength and durability of the gravel wheel.

    I am not surprised. I have road touring and gravel. 27mm 35mm 40mm all 700c. No more than a minute or two difference over 1 hour. The road has a special buzz about it. Touring has ability to carry stuff and do paths. Gravel for comfort safety and versatility.

    Great real world, real city riding experience video. Thanks!

    Actually it should be the tire not the “wheel” in the title. In my own experience, the difference between 28 Pro One TLE and 32 Clement Strada USH (came with my bike originally as a “gravel tire”) is huge. During my 1-hr 25 km “pre-climb” route (across a large city area just to get to the bottom of the climb), the difference is huge, it’s about 3-4 kph faster (average speed, with auto-pause enabled), or about 8-9 minutes less on the premium road tire. This route is a combination of city roads with a lot of traffic lights, bike path, side road of freeway, a lot of complicated overpass/inter-conjunction bridges, all with very heavy traffic. Each run will not be identical to each other due to you can’t expect the traffic lights and what you encounter be the same, but since I run this route too many times, and there are too many of the lights, as a result of the amazing law of possibility, the final time is surprisingly consistent. On the fast tire it’s always something like 57:xx or 58:xx, the slow tire is 1:08:xx or 1:07:xx something like that. The power is almost identical, because I always ride this “pre-ride” route the same way, power is avg of 150w and NP of 175w, actually on the slow tire the power is usually a little bit higher. Downhill is another story. On the 32 “slow tire” I can always feel the grip is so good that I can brake very late almost into the corner while on the fast tire, it’s a lot more sketchy, on the 25 conti gp5k TL I can always feel the tend to sliding and on the 28 Pro One it’s much better but still, the slow 32 Clement there’s no such thing… I think tire width here is the main factor, maybe you can try wider road tire, so you may have the best from both world. Because I don’t have any gravel within 50km radius, so for the pure joy of ride I’ll just go with the good road tire, maybe next time experiment with something wider. It’s good to see a video actually made in busy urban area, not every cyclist lives in the forests or small villages… 😂

      I almost wrote in the title wheels/tyres - remembering the gravel wheels are also smaller (650b)

    • @xuchenglin6256
      @xuchenglin6256 2 роки тому +1

      @@TriFitwithTimandAmanda There are in fact premium road tyres in 650b size, for example the conti GP5k has that size. So if you want to dig deeper maybe you could get some of these and see the difference. As far as my knowledge goes, the tire is the main concern here because the rolling resistance is huge. The wheel difference (even those aero ones, I ride with a 50/88 combination) is far smaller especially at this normal riding speed. I also ride my folding "road bike" (tern x30h with drop bar) with 20 inch wheels but with good tyres (pro one TLE in tubeless), they are the same speed with my 700c road bike.

    I've always wanted to test this as well. It seems hard to get comparable data without a power meter, which I also don't own, but I perceive road wheels/tires to be a lot faster (especially when comparing alloy gravel wheels to carbon road wheels).

    • @TriFitwithTimandAmanda
      @TriFitwithTimandAmanda  Рік тому

      Undoubtedly they are but for a hacker like myself is it worth the effort swapping wheels for an easy road ride

  • @tucniak111
    @tucniak111 2 роки тому +2

    your HR data suggests you have used more power to achieve +- same time on gravel wheels, doesn't it?
    More telling test would be to do the course with same power (avg, normalized) and see how fast you go with same power output :)

    • @TriFitwithTimandAmanda
      @TriFitwithTimandAmanda  2 роки тому

      Yep, the road wheels are definitely quicker with the same power. I don’t have a power meter nor want one and just checked my HR data at the end of the rides. Thanks for watching

  • @brianrollins3245
    @brianrollins3245 2 роки тому +1

    Surprising only 30 seconds in it, but less effort suggests course had some influence. Did you analyse further to see which sections were same, slower, faster?

    • @TriFitwithTimandAmanda
      @TriFitwithTimandAmanda  2 роки тому +1

      No I didn’t analyse it any further. I had to push harder with the gravel wheels which shows the road wheels are quicker

    Then, better and safer to saty with the fat tires. Cushioned and more grip for that type of urban, tight corner rides! No brainer!

  • @pierrex3226
    @pierrex3226 2 роки тому +1

    That's a material time difference, and a material HR difference, both pointing in the same direction. So yes, it is different! You neednt even do a test, though, the rolling resistance and ride quality of knobby tires on asphalt are just terrible. Nice test though.

  • @DaveCM
    @DaveCM 2 роки тому +1

    I kind of do the same test pretty regularly but not intentionally. I have an "after work route" I do usually two or three times a lot of weeks. I will often use my gravel bike even though it is all paved surfaces. I have done this for years. (Yes. I am a creature of habit.) With the 38c Specialized Pathfinder Pro tires, I am only about 1 mph slower on the gravel bike on average. I had some WTB tires that were noticeably slower and were 42c width. (I changed from them not because they were slower on pavement, I just hated the tires. Off pavement, I didn't notice much of a speed difference.) I have a pretty aggressive position on my gravel bike which helps minimize the less aerodynamics typically associated with them. I have always been tempted to put my road wheels on my gravel bike just to see the difference.

      You need to keep an eye on that. You don’t want to do 10,000 km on one cassette and 1000km on the other one. I try to keep an eye on it and keep the wear even. So far it’s worked well
