This and two more games ( Terranigma and Star Ocean ) were the massive master piece of the SNES. And shame on SNES of America at the time not to bring them to us.
Because the bSNES widescreen hack isn't stretching to widescreen, it's actually expanding the visual area. You end up with some glitches from scenes that don't have any data beyond the normal 4:3/5:4 viewable area, but you also get expanded viewpoints in scenarios where the game can create additional content beyond the borders.
I just wanted to make the same video but damn this looks great. It's sad that widescreen often only works good in cinematics and not in gameplay.

It's 16x9... and the circular objects aren't squished... what's going on here.
