    I agree. For the average Joe who puts their tower under their desk and forgets about it mounting the PSU fan side up is a good idea. Most people into computers don't work with the general public alot and thus don't see how dusty PCs get when they aren't cleaned out for years.

  • @PapaMav

    I appreciate and understand your explanation and reasoning. I am one of those who does attend to cleaning the bottom filter and front of cases. I also have one of those plastic "pet" mats, that you put under Kitty or Fido's food and water dishes (like a place mat) underneath our PCs so air is not being sucked like a vacuum directly through the rug (floor standing PCs). The mat does cut down on a lot of the crud getting sucked up by the PSU fan.

    thanks for the advice, just finished a build for a friend and had a minor heart attack about how "dangerously wrong" I was when I installed the PSU fan side up. The case is the same as the NZXT one in this video where there's holes in the shroud on top so the intake fan isn't just wedged against a solid surface, and it's good to hear my "mistake" actually has some benefits to it!

    Oldie here. I remember that relocating the PSU to the bottom was so that the PC would be more bottom heavy for weight balance and PSU would get more cooler air (as hot air rises). Thus realocating the mainboard towards the top rear where it will have two dedicated exhaust fans that pushes hot air out quicker as it naturally rises towards the top of the PC.
    During that time it was popular to run air flow negatively so that cool air is cycled faster to the top/rear of the pc. So the PSU being upside down is actually part of a old cooling strategy.

    I just upcycled an old PC as a gift to my little sister, she lives with cats in an old house and I up-mounted the power supply for these reasons. I know she wont clean it, I know she wont care about the internals, and I know the front intakes are filtered and are visible so she will see and hoover those intakes.
    Knowing how dusty PSUs get I even dust filtered the psu even tho its internal air

    There might be another reason for putting the PS from top to bottom. The DVD drives have 5,25" and are longer than HDDs 3,5". So there is now mostely more room for the cables ... and hands. :-)
    Since then, PS can be longer. When gaming graphics cards in the last 10 years needed a lot of power, PS had to be stronger, sometime bigger/longer than usual.
    Greetings from germany. I love your channel! And it's for me a good opportunity to practice english language.

    I agree, I still run a boomer case where the PSU is at the top. Heat rises so invariably will be picking up the hottest air in the case (if my case fans aren't getting rid of it first)

    • @pujiea
      @pujiea 3 роки тому

      that's pretty boomer, dude.

    • @d0nj03
      @d0nj03 2 роки тому

      Yes, and because boomer cases were severly choked for air, that layout led to way hotter air running through the PSU and its fan having to run at way higher RPM to keep it from getting damaged => noisier PC. The reason to want a separate air stream just for the PSU (and ideally for the CPU and GPU too, if we had the option) would be if you want to keep its cooler absolutely as quiet as possible.

    Lol if the PSU produces a relevant amount of heat you have bigger problems than what the fan faces. Great vid.

    actually the fan pointing down at the bottom of the case is for the cable to be nearer to the right side so cable length would be at max reach.

  • @PaulTheFox1988

    The only time I will mount a PSU fan side down is if the PSU shroud is completely blocked off, the EPS 12v connector is too short to easily reach, the PSU is top mounted, or if cable management restrictions means the system will look tidier with fan side down.
    Otherwise I will always fit the PSU fan side up; To me having the PSU fan side up is more aesthetically pleasing, it makes zero difference to thermals of the PSU, and with the many, many computers I've built over the years, I've never had a PSU fail because it was mounted fan side up.
    The way I build systems means that if a computer I've built ever comes in for maintenance, there's almost zero dust in the PSU no matter the environment they're put into, the systems are easy for the customer to keep clean themselves just by running a hoover across the front and top intakes, and they will always be built with the best cable management I can in the case it's put into, even with no side panel window; Because if anyone else looks at the system, I want them to see it was done professionally, and with the same care and attention I would put into my personal machines.
    The argument about fan side up or down is usually made by someone who read a reddit post about the subject, built 1 computer for themselves and now thinks they're a pro.

  • @gogee8510
    @gogee8510 2 роки тому +1

    Makes sense as there are very few average joes that will do a maintenance once year to clear all their dust filters. Th only time it is cleared is when they are doing an upgrade or the computer fails itself. Good video.

    Thanks Adamant, I am now building a new system with Coolmaster Gold 650 V2 PSU, Full Modular. Now I always had the PSU upside down. On this new one I have problem if installed upside down the M.B. and CPU collectors are on the far(left) side of the Modular which will be difficult to get to if I need to do maintenance on The PSU and take it out for a dust clean. If have up the normal way the collectors will be closer to me to dis-collect the cables and easier to pull the PSU out. I always clean my fans very 6 months and strip them for cleaning.👌👌Bingo!!👌👌

    Just when you said the part about (and I'll paraphrase) having to respond to the same question many, many times and typing it out, I thought...hey, check out KeyText. You can load up dozens of canned responses. It quickly types it out for you and It works from your client over an RDP session. I use it for not only answering common questions, but storing serial keys for my company's common software.
    Not only does it save me a ton of time, but I can keep tweaking my "perfect" answer to update and clarify. It costs $30 USD, but I bought mine about 15 years ago and I still use it every business day since.

    The whole bottom mount thing with a rectangular shroud probably started for aesthetics because as soon as the RGB craze kicked off with tempered glass panels all these people didn't want to look in their case to see a PSU with dangling damn cables at the top, even if you were able to tuck them in the back, it didn't look "clean" enough.

    I've been mounting my fans like that for years. Never even occurred to me to do it otherwise. I'm already fiddling my fans to blow and exhaust a steady flow of fresh air over my components, the psu sucking a bit ain't gonna hurt and I only have to worry about cleaning filters on the front intake. My case is old enough to predate widespread psu shrouds though.

  • @FatheredPuma81

    "You're computers air isn't that much hotter than room temp."
    I can take the side panel off my computer after gaming and feel the hot air flood over me or use the glass side panel itsself as a hand warmer (gotta be careful though because some parts are hot enough to hurt).
    I guess I need to spend more than what I spent on my case on fans for decent air flow maybe?

    • @danskifpv
      @danskifpv 4 роки тому +1

      You're definitely doing something wrong there, do you have your GPU mounted sideways? I play for in excess of 8 hours most days, I'm in the UK so it's almost always raining or cold. The case absolutely never gets hot. Run it with the side panel off maybe and feel where the heat is coming from

    • @docferringer
      @docferringer 4 роки тому +2

      Definitely want to invest in some fans to improve the airflow, and make sure those fans are behind a grille that is letting in fresh air (or allowing the fan to blow out hot air). A LOT of modern cases use fans for decoration and will stick them right up against a pane of glass, making them completely useless for moving air around. When you shop for a case, think about how many fans you plan to use and make sure the ventilation holes in the case match the fan size. 8 fans will cool as well as 1 if the only intake on the case is the size of a postage stamp.

    • @Dexx1s
      @Dexx1s 4 роки тому +2

      The temperature of the air flowing through is different from the temperature of the components. You can literally check the temps of your parts and see them hitting high temps. You'll feel it if the delta is high enough. That wouldn't be the temperature of the air that flows through it though.

  • @RunKingFilm

    I believe that only if there is no additional fan in the case, the power supply should be mounted with the fan up. It is then the only place that draws warm air from the inside of the case. Otherwise, it is better if it is a downward fan because it is cooled better, and some other fan takes care of extracting warm air.

    I've been pretty against PSU shrouds for a while. Full ATX and mATX cases they still have room to feed the GPU. I've actually been happy to see some manufacturers returning to top mounted PSUs primarily in non ultra compact ITX builds (Metallicgear Neo Mini V2, Phanteks P200A, and the Antec P120). For people that utilize the GPUs a lot you can have a path for air from the bottom with fans (granted you run into a dust issue, but I don't mind cleaning out my box). It seems the smaller the distance between the GPU and the shroud the more of an impact it would have. Granted most ITX people are more space-conscious, but from a practical standpoint and being able to utilize cheaper ATX PSUs with larger fans. If it's the type that runs consistently then consistent exhaust, and if it's only when it's hot then it seems that you'll get extra exhaust when required. The delta in air temp is important sure, but the movement of air over components does tremendous things for temps. It's one of the odd things about water. It's fantastic at absorbing heat, but not the greatest at dissipating it. For people that live in drier climates and don't know how to maintain their PCs this makes a lot of sense if your GPU has the headroom PSU to the inside makes a lot of sense.

    I was actually thinking of installing the PSU in my next build fan side up in order to keep a bit more separation between the hot GPU that sits right underneath the CPU.. As we know, hot air goes up and also we know the hotter the GPU gets, in most cases, the higher the top CPU temps under load. Logic being that while the PSU takes in part of the air, it drags the overall draft/intake down, preventing all of the warm air from flowing/raising up from the GPU to the CPU. Not only, but should your PSU fan ever break, the relatively small amount of warm air that it's producing, will now have a way to escape up, through the fan/vent, instead of building up inside..

    Just make sure to install enough carpet in your room, so the dust gets stuck inside the carpet and doesnt flow arround in the room. (Edit: don't - read comments)Then make sure your PC stands on a solid material. Finally always maintain your PC even if you install the PSU facing up. And "maintain" - clean your room, vacuum your carpet(s) and you are good 2 go.

    • @d0nj03
      @d0nj03 2 роки тому

      That's absurd. Textiles you lie on, sit on, walk on or rub for any reason are one of the main sources of dust in your home. A carpet likely generates as much dust as it "traps", probably more. Just vacuum often or run an air filter/purifier, those are your main methods to keep the dust quantity low. As for the PC case, get it as far off the floor as you can, as most of the heavier dust particles will gather there, while the higher-up surfaces like desks only get the lighter particles deposited on them since only those can be carried up high enough by air currents.

    • @884tomato
      @884tomato 2 роки тому

      @@d0nj03 Well ok horrible take from me, that carpets purify air or whatever. Obviously the cleaning process itself is the main reason why air gets purified, and this is hard to do if big diameter dust particles are trapped inside the carpet and obviously more easier with hard-floored rooms (e.g. hospitals). I would still like to know, beside acoustic reasons, why every, like nearly every freaking office installs carpets by default? I used to work in offices and carpets are obviously always more cozy, because less noise and so on. Still the PCs never had issues with dust as they were standing on the desks, with maintaining and cleaning them now and then. Also I swear ( and I know this isnt scientific at all, but please proof me wrong), that every room with installed carpet flooring has way less dust on the other surfaces like desks, lamps, shelves, and so on - compared to if you have the same room but without carpets, where especially the big and visible dust particles are laying in corners just a few days after cleaning.

    • @d0nj03
      @d0nj03 2 роки тому

      Oh and also, keep your relative humidity above 25-30% because that helps form heavier aerosols from dust+water that will tend to settle to the floor faster and not remain floating for too long to be breathed in by you or your devices, not to mention how very low humidity also increases the chances of static discharge that can also damage electronics. (But also don't go far above 50%, ideally, as that favors mold/fungus/bacteria and other problems.)

    what if the psu has hybrid mode? seasonic say to mount it upside down, but then what if you dont? what if you mount it with the fan on the bottom?

    • @Adamant_IT
      @Adamant_IT  Рік тому +1

      For PSUs with fan-stop mode, having them fan-side-up means more heat can escape, so the fan starts less often.
      It won't damage it to be fan-side-down, but it may be that the fan doesn't actually stop very often because it's constantly having to vent hot air out the back.
      I've not looked into how much of an 'issue' this actually is, but in my experience, good quality PSUs are mostly silent even when the fan is spinning, so it's a non-issue.
      I have an EVGA supernova that I actually have the hybrid-fan mode turned off on, because it hot-boxes itself and then the fan has to spin loudly to bring the temp back down. It's quieter to have the fan spinning on low all the time than it is for it to kick in every now and then.

    • @Zombie101

      @@Adamant_IT Hi Adam. thanks for the reply. That makes sense! actually i emailed seasonic about this, the manual states to have psu fan side up if running hybrid mode, but they confirmed with me that it can also be fan side down! pretty much as you said, should temps rise the fan will kick in and cool it down. Luckily the 1000gx vertex doesnt suffer the same fait as the EVGA psu lol
      i run mine in hybrid mode now, if i run it constantly on, it does make the most noise out of my entire system, i think in part due to how close the fan sits with the case vents

    AIO's are the big reason in my opinion. If a single drop of water (with chemicals, fungus and stuff) from a leakage from the AIO (wich will probably happen when the pump die) reaches the PSU then you will have a very very bad day. I think that companies are aware from that issue, and in oder to avoid incidents in a really nasty way with leakages from the AIO's they sell and the PSU's they sell and the negative effect of that in AIO's sellings, they silently "force" people to put their PSU's down with their stupid propaganda and the PSU covers that almost all PC cases have nowadays "only for aesthetically" purposes...

    So why dont these case builders learn from someone like Dell who mount the PSU at the top of the case away from the follor which has got to be the worst area for dust??, it just makes sense to have it at the top , it pulls the air from the case so its kind of dual action , taking heat out of the case and cooling the PSU

    I get where you're coming from - but my argument would be not to take risks on your own part, and to simply tell the customer "clean your PC fan filters once every month or two"
    If they fail to do so, it's not your problem, and can only result in additional business for PC technicians.
    Catering to laziness or a lack of intelligence is silly, and creates an environment where those who would neglect their expensive possessions don't learn from their mistakes.
    Teach, rather than creating a stupid-friendly environment.

      I do agree with this statement. I never want to be in a situation where the general populus thinks it is fit and forget. never been a fan of dumbing things down, they should be educated else we're not doing our part sociologically.

      "it's not your problem" someone who doesn't care about their customers will say that.
      Not to mention, putting it upward will have more benefit then this guy actually shooting two birds with one stone. upward facing:
      - Will take the hot air out of your case. since it will work as an extra fan for your case.
      - Will have less dust to your PSU.
      - Needs less maintenance.
      As for downside direction:
      - Less risk in case your case has a watercooler.
      As you can see, the benefit of upward is a lot more than downward unless you have a watercooler system.

      Tell them, sure. Will they follow it? Likely not. He doesn't want a customer to go in for repair if he can prevent it. In return he gets better reputation; more word of mouth advertisement from satisfied customers, compared to a tech who doesn't care.
      You may have the maintenance of your computer as a priority, most customers don't.

    I built a new PC using hydro x water cooling, my computer turned on and worked fine for first hour while I was trying to OC the cpu to 5.2Ghz, for some reason my PSU blown, I put my old PSU in and it posted but I’m super scared incase I’ve ruined something by blowing the PSU.. anybody know how it could have blown ? I was only overlooking using the systems safe tuning 🤔🤷‍♂️

      What PSU was it that died? I'm surprised that an OC killed it, unless it was underpowered for the job and already at its limit.
      Generally speaking, it's pretty rare for a failed PSU to damage something else. I've replaced hundreds of blown PSUs and can't think of any specific instance where something else was damaged. Not saying it can't happen, but if everything still works, I'd say you're in the clear.

    It’s all depending on case and airflow there is no up or down.

      980 Matrix. I have since sold it... in a way I liked having is because it's a very special card, but all I was using it for is just to sit in demo builds and look pretty - which is a bit sad for a card like that.

      Nothing special! I run an i5 8600k, Z370 Aorus Ultra Gaming, EVGA GTX 1070. I've built up a nice desk setup though :) i.imgur.com/AWQnUjA.jpg
      I've had the upgrade itch since before christmas, but I really like this build, and anything that's noticeably better is going to cost me arms and legs.

    can we just say this is the guy that mounts them like that? anyway I think it is also a great idea, we should have cool attics instead of basements on cases, old school top mounts are not good but a dedicated housing on the top would be great!
