When I was a kid, I definitely noticed the details in dolls once I was around 7 years-old. I noticed things like snaps and how soft and thick the fabric was. I also noticed manufacturing flaws like wonky eyes, and there are way more of those now. Barbie is still making some decent dolls, but you have to hunt, and the cost seems to have gone up way more than general inflation. Like, the Superstar Christie repro is worse quality than the original and is about 8x the price (now $60 in Canada). I actually returned her because there were flaws in the lip paint and I just couldn’t bear to see a doll that was inferior to the Superstar Barbie I had as a kid. I’m crossing my fingers for the Rewind dolls.

The only nice things I can say about that doll, is I think the face was good, and it’s cool she came with a lot of accessories.
The only Disney dolls I have right now were all purchased from Amazon and they were Disney Store dolls.sadly I don’t have any villain dolls, I wish they would make a Frollo, he’s my favorite villain.

As a child, I cared about the hair, an attractive face (aleast to me), and the outfits...especially the outfits. The blank empty backs were a no go for me. I loathed it then and I loathe it now. Articulation is something I appreciation more now but could have cared less then. I wanted my baby dolls to have the articulation. Its actually kind of weird because I still lean toward the same types of styles for my fashion dolls as a collector. I thought I might have changed but nope...still good ole big dress, fantasy or street fashion inspired, and with thick hair dolls. Lol.

When I was a kid we hated non-Barbie dolls because they either wouldn’t bend at the hip and couldn’t sit down or they wouldn’t bend at the knee, so if they DID sit down, their legs were gonna be sticking straight out. We felt lucky to have Barbies because they had the bend and snap knees. And we didn’t even mind having no movable elbow, wrist, or shoulder joints. Now days, the fashionistas are reminding me of just how low Mattel has sunk. You’ve got to have bendable knees. Anything less is dollar store garbage.

Barbie has such a long history and set the standard for any fashion doll. If you look at Barbie's timeline it's hasn't been the same quality through time. You can see that every couple of years there is a crisis that Mattel doesn't know where to go with Barbie and she has to adapt to the changing times where things get cheaper or gimmicky. As a long time Barbie collector I definitely had more periods I thought the quality was less (remember when they gave Barbie bigger heads and tacky clothes and after they went back to normal head sizes) and I lost interest. But then again Barbie reinvents itself again and comes out with something interesting and more quality and beautiful dolls and I am hooked again. Yes Barbie is again in crisis with no clear direction but hopefully with the competition of dolls like Rainbow High they will step it up. Barbie looks to me is a step in the right direction ;-)

I got a 1986 fun to dress Barbie and she was about the same price used as a fashionista but I got the lingerie swimsuit she came with originally. The only thing I could nitpick her for is having kankalon hair but it is rooted plentifully and is nice kankalon hair. Her legs bend and her joints have held up well, even her waist, which on some dolls gets pretty swingy.
The thing or point is that Fun To Dress was the Budget Barbie of her day along with my First Barbie but it seems to me that you did get more value for your money, I guess ramble on too.

I wasn't considering any of these since the only villain I want in doll form is a human Scar. 🥵 lmao
The worst choice for me is that body they gave her but, like you said, this is the standard Hasbro set so I'm not surprised or all that concerned. I collect some Marvel Legends figures and I'm always pleased with the quality of those so it's unfortunate seeing that Hasbro's dolls don't impress me as much.
I don't have Barbie nostalgia since I didn't get into doll collecting until Monster High but even I can see the quality drop. I can only imagine what it's like in collector communities seeing people argue about this kind of stuff. I really only interact with 3 UA-cam channels focused on dolls and dassit. Lol

I think she could be way better for sure, but honestly surprising we got new Disney Villain dolls at all even if they're more cartoony. I think Hasbro could make some amazing dolls but somebody behind the creation of these dolls try to be as cheap as possible, despite being a company that also makes Marvel Legends. I know every brand under Hasbro isn't the same, but it feels to me the ones behind the Disney Dolls cater to a younger demographic. I'm happy we got new Disney villain dolls, I'd definitely say grab them while they're available because Villains dolls lines are sparse and rare.

    • @JeffreySteinmanReviews
      @JeffreySteinmanReviews  3 роки тому +1

I don't understand why toy companies think kids don't notice quality and detail. I did as a kid! I could tell the difference between a real Barbie and a knock off even when adults didn't. In toy stores I would always compare dolls faces, who had the best make-up, spoke to me the most, before buying one. Barbie back then was already considered an expensive toy but also it had superior quality. And the kids who play with dolls today are the collectors of tomorrow so they should try to give kids quality dolls.

I was very picky when a child, I did understand that the hair quality was not that good, I was annoyed when they reused molds for pets and just changed the color (when it’s all one color), I likes the dolls with articulation, always annoyed me that I couldn’t make Barbie use her phone properly, or sit in a way that looks natural… anyways, I think kids do notice small things and will be happier with better quality

I get what you mean. I have experienced anx heard, many stories of people who were little that recall haveing a special toy of admiration or it fondly remembered to be unique or it was a durable play thing. Like their are parents who want to gift their child a piece of what they experience. And it does feel disappointing when you recal a well made toy in your childhood. That has decreased in quality, even though the brand is still alive. It just doesn't hit the same or you feel like. They could absolutely do better. MGA still has it's inner issues (not forgiving the doxing of a minor and the racist remark) but i think it is good that Mattel/ Barbie has a competitor that is getting them uncomfortable. Because the brand has been on cruising as the "Best" for a while. (Monster high /Brats had a momment but it is a wait n see again) So now (even though it hits sketchy momments) the brand has been experimenting recently, and i also hope this can also show/open doors for perhaps. A opening for future doll brands/toys. Seeing the top brand not hit first place could be a motivator or a well needed wake up call. That they need to reevaluate what their average standard should be.

    • @JeffreySteinmanReviews

I cared most that my dolls were Black & had great fashion. I think adult collectors forget how important it is to children & adults to see dolls who look like them. Barbie has tried to provide that for decades. Yes MGA is doing amazing things with fashion but we need to remember the entire line of dolls has the exact same face mold & body type. It's the decision of what matters most to the company are they investing in physical diversity or clothing? Of course the perfect line of dolls would have both but could they still be affordable? IDK.

I mean...she's not the highest quality but honestly I like the hasbro dolls and the thin rooting doesn't bother me in this case because of her hairstyle. I'm also completely brainwashed to be happy with anything after all of the crap we've seen on dolls in recent years lol. But usually I think the hasbro hair is nice and also longer than that of many Barbie's, which I would have greatly appreciated as a child.

Hasbro frustrates me so much because they make amazing articulated action figures and absolutely have good sculptors but they just never can seem to put a really good doll together. If the sculpts and proportions and articulation are on point than the clothing is lackluster and the hair thinly rooted (or molded 🤢)
Like Ursula's face sculpt here is probably the closest to the animated film I've ever seen, but the body is so off.
I appreciate the plastic free packaging but you can't convince me that they couldn't properly proportion her. Idk why companies are so afraid of actually depicting a fat character as fat but it's annoying as hell. And while I can definitely see how thin rooting might be necessary to achieve the hairstyle I don't think it justifies just how bald she is in the back. Also Ursula wore earrings so like? She should have had earrings. $20 from Hasbro isn't a bad price but for what I'm seeing here, is more than I would personally pay for this doll.
Totally agree a Vanessa doll in this line probably would have been great!
Barbie was never my favorite even as a child buuut I'm really trying to fall in love with her because Mattel makes me a lot less angry than a lot of these other toy companies even if their quality and styling isn't where I'd like it to be.
