My mom used to sing this song to me when I was a little child
She said my aunt had sewing classes with a japanese sensei and she sang this song while sewing.
After that, my aunt taught my mom and sang this song while sewing too.
It became my "childhood theme song" LOL

I was singing this on a train home from teaching in Shingiku and a Japanese man says , "You like DRINKING song" and I just turned red. I also had lived in Japan at age 5 and knew this song from that age : ) I guess it is well sung everywhere. I remember from youth old men cooking their sweet potatoes outside and singing this song.
