Classical and not-so-classical-at-all: Julia Holter’s music lies at a crossroads similar to the one where artists like Arthur Russell or Laurie Anderson reside. It’s the sound of an artist who has clearly been trained-in this case at Cal Arts with Michael Pisaro and in India singing with harmonium under guru Pashupatinath Mishra-and one that has no problem forgetting everything previously learned, if needed. Holter’s songwriting stems from a mythological reverence of that which is incomprehensibly beautiful.
Her 2007 EP Eating the Stars was a first attempt at musically transcribing this feeling, and her 2011 debut album Tragedy embraced similar strains of shimmer. But it was on 2012’s Ekstasis where everything came together. Critically beloved, it’s the culmination of her young career, a record whose motivating character was best described by Holter herself: Ekstasis reflects, she says, “a desire to get outside of my body and find what I can’t define.”
In her 2013 Red Bull Music Academy lecture, Holter talked about what she learned while attending the University of Michigan, her creative process, recording Ekstasis, and more.

The beginning of the video is precious lmao
she so deserved a superior interviewer
I can't imagine Julia ever drinking Red Bull.
She only does it when you're not looking.
Lmfao😂
Julia Holter is one of the most unique talents working today! Her composition is a celebration of all things musically wonderful!
Riveting viewing 0:00 to 4:53
I love how Julia wears her thoughts in her face.
+Nitrous McBread totally
On her face? *
No, in it. And under it, and slightly to the north east of it.
Damn son.
+Mitchem Callahan Lol
You really want to give her a hug.
and then marry her
Idk why people complain about the interviewer, I think he was fine tbh. Not the interviewer of the decade, but still nice!
And she inspires me so much since I discovered her music & personality.
I think he's a good interviewer, and Julia Holter is amazing.
23:06 incredible song...
That's a really long time to spend with that dude.
HAHA
Hahahaha
Hey, that's mean spirited, bradh!
Sometimes dudes take a long time................to ask good questions.
22:21 this smile tho...she's a stunner
I guess what people find frustrating is that he makes too many assumptions with his questions, rather than asking open questions. I don't mind that personally, he's engaged and his interviewers feel comfortable. They don't feel like they're being probed or tested and it's got quite a relaxed format.
I love Julia Holter.
one of my favourite artists, so creative
Does anyone know if theres video of the show she did with Thundercat?
After watching this, I think I know what I want to do with my life. Thanks for having this lecture. BTW, how can I get a copy of the Cookbook piece?
listening to a track in then car, in my room or at a venue is one this.......infront of a group of strangers...wow
0:22 julia wanted to laugh
1:22:25 WOAH, origins of Why Sad Song precursor

He has done his research. I like his style.
Wooooah! Objekt asks a question at 1:19:00! This is especially cool considering how different each ones music is from the other.
For anyone who doesn’t know Objekt CHECK HIM OUT! Then go listen to his RBMA lecture the was released this year. :)
Peace
Office Of The Dead ♥♥♥♥
Objekt in the crowd.
Boss
Can't find any recording of the "Lay Lady Lay" cover :/
4:10 eyes...
isn't he the same interviewer from opn's? who's him? people hate him quite a bit, right? :/
I liked him during OPN’s, but he comes off almost confrontational at times here. Definitely a totally different vibe from him regardless.
Why is everyone mad at the dude? He and Julia were having a great time... But, seriously, LOOK AT THAT AUDIENCE!!! THEY LOOK LIKE THEY ARE SO DEPRESSED JESUS CHRIST
Does anyone know the songs they play on here
You can find all the songs in the description.
Weird but brilliant track.
1:07 at this moment she realized...she's surrounded by nerds
Julia is great, this interviewer...not so much.
such an awkward way to start a video
reminds me of an awkward date
this interviewer though
First 5 minutes are so hard to watch, fuck sakes.
This is a lecture?
Interview just seems stoned awkward to me
That old man is insufferable
