Is Slow Actually Smooth in Disc Golf?

  • The first form guru I listened to was Danny Lindahl, and he always used to say that "Slow is smooth, and smooth is far". But for some reason I've always moved a little to fast for my own good in disc golf.
    So today we are testing, whether going slow and controlled will actually improve my accuracy and maybe even give me more distance?
    Enjoy the video :)

    Something ive seen and that has helped me, while doing the briefcase type load up, once you go to throw you sort of roll your forearm to where the bottom of your arm faces up, that way it pushes the disc nose down. Pouring the coffee can help but if you look at the release itll be more of a hyzer then nose down, thats where the wrist/forearm roll comes into play. Pour the coffee and turn the key . Feels weird at first but then it becomes natural

    Cool video. Enjoyed the content! Slowing down helped me big time. If i may share an observation - you're doing what I i used to do which is stepping too far to the left on your last step, it doesnt allow you to get shoulder to hip separation and robs sooooo much power. Also by decreasing the width of my last step and striding out towards the front of the teepad instead of the side helped a lot with my accuracy because it sent my momentum in the direction I want to throw in. Hope that makes sense. Would love to see a video of you trying to work on your footwork to see if that would work for you. best wishes

      Wow you're good! That is literally the form piece ive been working on lately, so I guess we made the same observation. Did you do anything to fix it or just forced yourself to step forward? I'm having a lot of timing problems when i do it, I dont seem to have time to cool fully

      Lol no way. Well I guess I'm on the right track then!. Unfortunately it's definitely going to temporarily ruin your timing and overall throw because you have to unlearn the bad footwork and reinforce the new. I watched a video by Overthrow Disc Golf that showed correct footwork, and that was all I needed. It drastically improved my accuracy consistency and added distance once I got used to the changes. And the slow is smooth idea really makes sense and helped me too. The throw is all about timing and creating that rubberband effect, which is way too hard to do while trying to go fast. Check out Paul Oman and how he throws. Very unique form but has all of the important things and moves so slow, but he is super accurate and can bomb. Seeing him changed the way I thought about throwing a lot

      @@matgbx yeah I'm also pretty hooked on Overthrow being the best form coach. I will say, Paul Oman has the same advantage as someone like gannon or eagle, where their lims are just longer so their good timing will be amplified. Being 5'6 i do need to move fast, but definitely still a good principal. And no doubt i would be able to throw atleast 450' with very low efford if I have good form. So im not gonna pretend I cant learn from the long guys 😂

      @@jezufandiscgolf oh for sure. I'm actually 6'3 so I have that advantage too. With bad form I could still out drive most people, but it took a lot of effort and was inconsistent. Now it's much lower effort and more consistent with better distance. I totally understand physical limitations based on height and size, but I think people look at pros and try to throw as fast as them (particularly the shorter pros) - and that just won't work. Those pros have great form that they've burned into muscle memory so they could speed it up over time. I believe that if you work on good form and timing first while moving slower, you'll play better ( and probably pick up some distance due to better form) and then will be able to speed things up once your new form is automatic. Yea the way Josh at Overthrow teaches his ideas just really makes sense to me, so I've watched them a lot. This video is the indepth X-step one: ua-cam.com/video/aWMR1Kf2m3w/v-deo.html and this one is the complete walk up: ua-cam.com/video/w4Y4tGiPbhA/v-deo.html - Those are what I used to rework my walkup/footwork. @@matgbx yeah i actually went out playing a round with the slow moving form right after filming this video and shot a scorching -11 at my home course so no doubt there is some Accuracy to gain as well. It's just so hard for me to continously convince myself to move slow when throwing farther is the only thing im really missing 😄 it's a mental block i need to overcome

    Thank you for a great video🙌🏼🤩 I Think it would be interesting to talk about the difference between midrange and fairway drivers, I feel like it has some relevans in this topic . Often when I throw midrange I feel really smooth, controlled, accurate and so on, but when I go up for a fairway it seems like because it requires more power I loose all of that good stuff🤔🥏 at least I Think it is an exciting topic, also the mental aspect of it🤔

    • @jezufandiscgolf
      @jezufandiscgolf  7 місяців тому

      Yeah that is interesting. Im weird with midragens, When i power grip them, it takes extra power for me to get them out of my hand clean. I see what you mean though, the faster the disc, the faster we feel like we have to throw it... But is it really nessecary or is it in out heads? 😄

    The whole point of having "good form" is to prevent injury....... Seriously, I've heard time after time...... Keep your spine straight, use your body like a whip & always, always, always follow through. Stay safe & see you down the fairway. 😉
