Don't forget it also comes with weather sealing and record close focusing, which is great for detail shots. I have owned the Tamron 35 f/1.8 for about two months on a Nikon D750 and it is my favorite lens.
I'm strangely excited for the 85 to come out. A do a lot of handheld video at weddings, and it's a pain to run the 70-200 all day just for the VR. Thanks for doing a proper review of this, and also thanks for not going too overly technical.
I have the 35mm lens for my 6D and I think it is an absolutely awesome lens. It's definitely my most used lens and the performance is well worth the money
I bought the 35mm 1.8 as soon as it came out and immediately used it for a wedding. You say the focusing is super fast, but I have to admit that I had a few missed shots during the reception because of it searching for focus. Still, the VC saved my tail on more than a few occasions and I probably got more shots from the reception that were hits rather than misses because of that. For the price you can't beat this lens if you shoot weddings or low light events. The bokeh quality wasn't as pretty in my opinion at 1.8 versus Sigma ART or Canon lenses, though. I'm still pretty damn happy with the lens and it's always in my go to bag.
Great video on this lens. I'm a photographer for the Canadian Armed Forces and I just picked up this lens. Really excited to see what I can produce with it! Cheers.
You are 100 percent correct about your assessment, for weddings along with a 85mm and a 70-200. This a great lens and for low light it excels, like in a wedding reception with low light the VC is awesome. I own the sp45 and love it and you do only need one or the other. I have an older Nikon 35mm f2.0d series and this is a huge step up in quality. This lens is incredibly sharp with great color saturation. Tamron has come a long way and I own several of their lenses.
First I wondered why image stabilisation in wide-angle primes is such a big deal, then I realised that being used to Pentax' in body stabilisation I never knew that CaNikon users don't benefit from stabilised wide-angle primes :P
Tamron has also weather sealing... Which more expensive 35mm Sigma's don't have... Also a plus point for outdoor usage... Gonna buy the Tamron next week... Cheers for the VC examples... Gonna do night city shots with it as we. :)
please help me to choose.. if you should choose only 1 or 2 lenses for nikon d750 (fx) body which one you think the best lens range for wedding (the most usefull)? 16-35mm(nikon f4 VR) , 24mm (nikon f1.8g), 35mm (sigma f1.4 ART), 85mm (nikon 1.8g) or else? please can you sort from the best choice to the end ..
I don’t have a 50 in my kit. The 1.8 sigma 18 - 35 a huge jump to the 1.4 85mm and the 2.8 70 to 200. This is bang on for me on the Blackmagic 6K super 35. I do a lot of interior event shoots and street handheld. Vibration control is the difference between usable and unusable footage for me.
Build quality in all honesty does not feel cheap. Ultimately Sigma of course has the W overall but compared to first party canon or Nikon this lens feels great. Hefty but not overkill
great info!....but your heavy handed music levels made me turn it OFF.

Agreed that they are approaching uncharted territory. I would love to see more IS in Canon prime wide angle. But what about picture quality? Optical performance? Pretty incomplete "review" therefore :-(
Not sure if it has been mentioned, but it also has weather sealing so for some trip in cold winter for mountain landscapes whatever, it could be great option to get 35mm one. Thinking actually about Tamron over getting Sigma Art for this... But still not sure. :)
A stabilized 35mm lens may not be the beginner's first choice, but it's definitely a general purpose walkaround lens for someone like me - a hobbyist and family father who wants something for travel and holidays.
I shoot with D750 and the 35mm but my lens is always missing focus if the subject is further away like 10 to 15 feet. Do you experience a similar issue?
bebespurs it definitely gets very very pastely almost too soft at 1.8 sometimes. but overall the lenses are beautiful. second, the lens is insanely durable i dropped it out of my car (wasn’t moving) and the glass was perfectly fine-while the outside was banged up. but otherwise, it was fine. photos come out beautiful
I'm surprised Lee wasn't able to get better photographs with the setup given that he seems to like it a lot. I love night time photography, but often struggle to come back with keepers when the light is dim. None of the examples shown seemed to be worlds apart from what I'm getting. VC on a fairly wide (but probably not wide enough for my tastes as a DX shooter) makes me happy, but not blown away with the results even fully open at 1/5. I do appreciate these are likely OOC shots though, and praise for that - nothing worse than seeing a ton of PP when that's not the purpose of the exercise.
i wonder how this is compared to the sony e 35mm 1.8 with image stabilization. seems like they are very much alike, except that sonys lenses react Little better in af. price and size differs a lot so i asume the tamron is better coz its more pricy? i cant really find any comparison between them.( i own a tamron 35m and i can say that it is a bit hard to keep focus on my Canon m5 when things in front of the camera is moving.
+justin94block All DSLRs today are amazing. Even the entry level ones. I'd suggest buying a Canon Rebel and a 50mm 1.8. It will be super cheap but will still take amazing shots.
+justin94block personally I would buy a nice used camera and lens... say a Nikon D5100 or Canon T3i body then buy a new 35mm 1.8 prime lens for $200. $400 will get you what cost $1000 just 3 years ago. That is how I would start. I practice what I preach too. I just bought a refurbished Nikon D7100 on black friday for $479... wow what a deal. You want to start on a consumer body... they are complicated enough for a beginner... don't buy something designed for a semi-pro to learn on its biting off more than one can easily chew.
love the videos but can you please try to level out the music with the speaking bits. Music is WAY too loud and then when you speak it is very quiet. Keep up the great work =)
I'm a landscape and lifestyle photographer and I definitely wouldn't use a tripod unless I'm doing astrophotography, there's no reason to use a tripod in the middle of the day, vibration control definitely helps so you don't have to boost the ISO to crazy levels
As always a great review, albeit with one caveat this time - either I missed it or you didn't lose a single word on image quality? Pretty much the most important aspect.
smrfr Check DxO ... you'll be amused. I own the Tamron and have used the Sigma a bit.... it's about even to the eye, DxO rates them extremely close with the Tamron slightly edging the Sigma. It's funny because you hear all these reviews that mention the Tamron having CA.... but then the Sigma no mention of it, when both are actually fairly low compared to Nikon's 35mm 1.8..... which is horrid.
@singletrack29349 I own the 45, it doesn't have much lateral CA but more of the longitudinal which shows up in the bokeh. 99% of people will not notice that and to my eye, it's better to have a lens with some CA but great rendering such as the 45 rather than a very well corrected lens with poor rendering like so many other lenses including the sigma.
I want two or three off each as they are reasonable priced lences. Gonna use them on my Nikon D750 that I will get soon and my Nikon D5500 as well as my future GH5
I've been pleased to get invited to a presentation of those for local portrait photographers last october (pp.vk.me/c625229/v625229407/43686/cjJwuezCwA4.jpg), and the way you pointed out the build quality and VR usage boundaries was right along my thoughts. It's built solid and VR for a cost of little F-stop reduction (keeping T-stop still pretty high as they assure) is surprisingly helpful even if you don't use it a lot. I only feel you forgot to mention their almost extreme close focusing feature as well as long and soft focus ring rotation for manual use. I think Tamron's intention was to pick a good price for all those features combined as an quality package between native lenses and pricy Sigma Art.
FYI guys, I got one of these new sp 35s, everything is great. But if I forget to turn VC off when shooting long exposure - it kills the picture dead with motion blur. I did not see anything like this even on cheapest canon kit lenses.Of course, images with IS off on long exposure are sharper, but for fuck sake on this Tamron it looks like 1second handheld. Is it just my lens?
+sasatrif I bought the 28 I while back at about half retail price secondhand (they're really unpopular). It's pretty much my walk around and go-to event flashgun lens. Definitely overlooked.
Why are you spinning the zoom ring. Its called a focus ring on a prime lens at 1:28 This video sounds like Tamron paid for it. If you are truly reviewing lenses you should have the Nikon and or Canon versions to the third party options to appear unbiased
+AGH331 it would be still a huge difference. lets say the usa doenst have a vat. the price is 500. 500 * 1.19 is more or less 600. 800-600 is still 200 dollar difference
1) I like your reviews, but I don't agree with you when you call a 45mm for a wide angle lens. Our eyes "normal view" is equal to 45 mm +/- 2 mm. 2) I'm getting old and want a lighter bag. And, I want more primes again. I have sold my Tamrons 24-70 and 70-200 (both G2), and will buy this 45mm. Other lenses I have are Canon 12-24 and 100-400 v2, TC 1.4x III, and Tamron 90 mm f/2.8 macro. (F017). I don't think I will miss any focal lengths.
+blackjohnny0 VC helps in any situation. You getting old and your hands are shacking, you've been at a weeding all day making photos and your hands gets tired, you see something and you need to take a photo at a moment notice, VC is always welcome in any lens, always helps.
Wrong...by bring in up the Iso you can use faster shutter speeds and VC only helps to get the image sharper not the other way around. The reason of having VC is to help out you and your lens to get steady shoots.VC is always goo either you use faster speeds or not. I've got this lens my self and I am very happy with it.
Which unfortunately is not great and definitely kills either for those wanting it for EF mount. Just settle for the EF 35 f/2 IS which does better everything but weather sealing.
+Noobshit888 So did I. Ended up with the EF 35 f/2 IS, although I would prefer the 45 FOV. Canon ends up being more compact, just 1/3 stop slower, yet sharper, with lower CA and with smoother bokeh and consistent AF. Yes, it lacks weather sealing and the MFD, but I don't think I would be shooting many things @ 8in / 20cm with a 35-45.
+singletrack29349 I am not dogmatic. Would love to be enlightened with some links / samples. Both the EF 35 f/2 IS and the Tamron 35 1.8 VC are better in CA regards vs. Sigma 35A and Canon 35L mk1 and both are very sharp. But I still think the Canon is sharper, and the reviews I have in mind, support that. That includes the Roger Cicala test that samples 10+ lenses to average out sample variations: www.lensrentals.com/blog/2015/12/tamron-f1-8-vc-prime-lenses-sharpness-mtf-curves. My biggest beef was with the onion-patterned oof highlights that Tamron shows, when the Canon doesn't...also, if you are to believe DXO mark, actually gives the Canon the same - even slightly faster T stop (i.e. probably the Tamron is more of f/2 too). Either way, its nit-picking, you cannot go wrong with either.
Sorry guys but your ' review' spends 4 minutes discussing VC. What about the optical qualities ? There is no mention of their remarkable close focus ability either. Poor effort.
Agreed. I like these guys, but on this video the audio mix is just *horrible*. The dialogue is too low and the music is too loud, not to mention that it comes in too soon each time, cutting off what he's saying at the end of each point he's making. REALLY annoying. I'd rather have the subject's audio well mixed with no music, then to be constantly adjusting volume for the entire video. Poor attention to audio details here.
Don't forget it also comes with weather sealing and record close focusing, which is great for detail shots. I have owned the Tamron 35 f/1.8 for about two months on a Nikon D750 and it is my favorite lens.
I like the VC. Imagine the things I can do handheld with this at night at f1.8 and Nikon D4s at 25600 ISO :3
I'm strangely excited for the 85 to come out. A do a lot of handheld video at weddings, and it's a pain to run the 70-200 all day just for the VR.
Thanks for doing a proper review of this, and also thanks for not going too overly technical.
So... What are your thoughts on the 85 now?
I'm in the market for an 85mm, and I'm either going with Tamron 85mm f/1.8 or Sigma 85mm f/1.4.
@@nostalium how strong are your arms? If the answer is anything less than very, get the tamron
I borrowed this for an hour one time and wow!!! I’ve been wanting a sigma 35 1.4 art..but I was blown away by the shots I got! Definitely buying one

I'm sure he meant focus ring. I've done that before! Lol
First I wondered why image stabilisation in wide-angle primes is such a big deal, then I realised that being used to Pentax' in body stabilisation I never knew that CaNikon users don't benefit from stabilised wide-angle primes :P
Is there any audible noise with the auto focus or stabalization turned on?

Canon has a 35mm IS
VR on EVERYTHING if you ask me;~)
Keep up the great content on this channel.
I have one on hold. That 1/5 at 100 ISO was incredible. What shutter speed is acceptable for commercial photos at night with VC turned on?
0:24 - that's not true, canon makes wide primes 24 & 28mm with IS as well.
which one you like the most and you're right you don't need a 35mm and a 45mm but i wanted the 35mm for sure but which one you use the most
Bokeh seems to be very soft and nice too, a real plus for a prime lens :)
You found a zoom ring in a fixed focus lens?
what with the focus assist, are you shooting on auto? :D good lens review doe
Very helpful review - more Tamron please
I shoot with D750 and the 35mm but my lens is always missing focus if the subject is further away like 10 to 15 feet. Do you experience a similar issue?
I have the Sony A6300 AND NEED TO upgrade my kit lens. Will the VB or IS work with the A6300? I thought I read somewhere it won't. Thanks in advance.
What about Sharphes on 1.8? Bokeh? Color? Focus Speed? This is the most needed information, but you does´n say at all.))))
bebespurs it definitely gets very very pastely almost too soft at 1.8 sometimes. but overall the lenses are beautiful. second, the lens is insanely durable i dropped it out of my car (wasn’t moving) and the glass was perfectly fine-while the outside was banged up. but otherwise, it was fine. photos come out beautiful

Bro, if you want to do better in dim light.... your going to have to upgrade to full frame. Cheers!
Good review. Thanks guys.
For portrait Is Tamron 45mm 1.8 a better option than Nikon 50mm 1.8G? I'm using Nikon D5500 and 35mm 1.8G.
Tomal Bhattacharjee I have the Nikon 50mm F1.4 for my D750 it's just such I nice lens.
Mark Shirley but it's review say that the 1.8 version is better.. 1.4 has barrel distortion n it's slow
i wonder how this is compared to the sony e 35mm 1.8 with image stabilization. seems like they are very much alike, except that sonys lenses react Little better in af. price and size differs a lot so i asume the tamron is better coz its more pricy? i cant really find any comparison between them.( i own a tamron 35m and i can say that it is a bit hard to keep focus on my Canon m5 when things in front of the camera is moving.
Very well done video and editing ;)
Any basic setup you recommend that isn't too pricey for starters?
+justin94block All DSLRs today are amazing. Even the entry level ones. I'd suggest buying a Canon Rebel and a 50mm 1.8. It will be super cheap but will still take amazing shots.
Yeah, $700+ seems cheap for the bundle. You got any videos of them?
+justin94block personally I would buy a nice used camera and lens... say a Nikon D5100 or Canon T3i body then buy a new 35mm 1.8 prime lens for $200. $400 will get you what cost $1000 just 3 years ago. alright man, thanks!
+justin94block Check Costco $499 T5 and 2 lenses, current deal don't know how much longer it's going for. Then get a 50mm 1.8, $125.
hi love ur videos , can u tell me canon 85mm f/1.8 is it great for portraits?
I have had primes in the past and couldn't deal with the needed shutter speeds just in general indoors. even dropping 1-2 stops is huge.
focus ring :D not zoom
love the videos but can you please try to level out the music with the speaking bits. Music is WAY too loud and then when you speak it is very quiet. Keep up the great work =)
may I know whats the name of the music in the first few minutes? thanks before
does it work on the new a7S2 with an adaptor ? can you review that on the video aspect ?
Hi,
Thank you so much for review. Can you please compare Tamron 85 mm F1.8 with Canon 85 mm (L series) ?
Thanks in advance.
Excellent lens. I love it. The slowest lens I own as far as speed of AF is concerned
what body were you using?
Are they whether sealed?
What camera you use for this video?
+Trener Pali Nikon d750s
canon sells a 35mm f2 is.
+Mike Anastasio Thanks for pointing that out. I never knew this lens existed
+Fstoppers haha Welcome. Thought it would be good to let others know. I do think the tamron seems like the better lens though.
And the Canon 35 f/2 IS is very good, focuses quick and very accurate.
y switching
Is the Canon weather sealed like the Tamron?
I'm a landscape and lifestyle photographer and I definitely wouldn't use a tripod unless I'm doing astrophotography, there's no reason to use a tripod in the middle of the day, vibration control definitely helps so you don't have to boost the ISO to crazy levels
Are they FX lenses?
Yes they are!
Awesome thank Marc Morris
Nice review 👍🏼. Hopefully these lenses work well on entry level DSLR..
Tauseef Tariq guess you should of spent 250 on canon 5d dumbass
As always a great review, albeit with one caveat this time - either I missed it or you didn't lose a single word on image quality? Pretty much the most important aspect.
+gurudeclan they are sigma sharp.... And sharp in the edges, where the sigmas are not.
Does anybody found purple fringing in this lens
Tried the 35mm last month. The chromatic aberration is unfortunate
Less than the Sigma... You'd have to buy something like the Canon 35 f1.4 L II at three times the cost to get less CA.
Not from my experience. I currently own the Sigma
smrfr Check DxO ... you'll be amused.
I didn't even give Nikon's 35mm 1.8 a shot because of the cheap build quality. Can't see myself buying another "featherweight" Nikon 1.8 again
Thanks for the info Lee. See you at Fashion Week?
When are you guys gonna make playlist of all the dope songs you use on your videos? Maybe "Fstoppers Official Sundtrack"?
3:13 What is a "moh-vie"?
A Movi is a handheld 3-axis gimbal!
I want two or three off each as they are reasonable priced lences. Gonna use them on my Nikon D750 that I will get soon and my Nikon D5500 as well as my future GH5

I think Tamron's intention was to pick a good price for all those features combined as an quality package between native lenses and pricy Sigma Art.
This is nice but wish they made a 24 or 28mm 1.8 with VC.
If you need VC/IS get a Sony or Pentax, they have it built into the camera !!!
2:45 I'm sold. Sigma, sorry babe...
FYI guys, I got one of these new sp 35s, everything is great. But if I forget to turn VC off when shooting long exposure - it kills the picture dead with motion blur. I did not see anything like this even on cheapest canon kit lenses.Of course, images with IS off on long exposure are sharper, but for fuck sake on this Tamron it looks like 1second handheld. i bought one, it is a excellent lens.
Does anyone have issues with auto focus
I'd love these on Sony ;)
+Rafaelinux They'll be releasing a Sony mount version shortly.
+Visaural Not e mount :/
Canon offers new set of prime lenses with IS lately. 35 f2, 28 2.8 IS etc
+sasatrif I bought the 28 I while back at about half retail price secondhand (they're really unpopular). It's pretty much my walk around and go-to event flashgun lens. Definitely overlooked.
"spin the zoom ring"....on a prime?
Zoom Ring ?
Zoom prime
good stuff!
Klasse gemacht gefällt mir außerordentlich gut Lg.Pidi
That 45mm focal length just throws me off.
I love you cap dude
That's went you change to Sony A7II or A7R II mirrorless and in body stabilization. Thanks Sony
Why are you spinning the zoom ring. Its called a focus ring on a prime lens at 1:28 This video sounds like Tamron paid for it. If you are truly reviewing lenses you should have the Nikon and or Canon versions to the third party options to appear unbiased
Informative video but loud annoying music...
500 to 600 Dollars ? These are 800 Dollars in Germany...
+Machun American prices are displayed with VAT (Mehrwertsteuer) as it differs between states. Add that and the difference shrinks significantly.
+AGH331 it would be still a huge difference. lets say the usa doenst have a vat. the price is 500. 500 * 1.19 is more or less 600. 800-600 is still 200 dollar difference
Bought mine 2 years ago for 300$ brand new
Ok but now we have sigma 35mm 1.4 art. Please help tamron or sigma:)
(F017). I don't think I will miss any focal lengths.
suuuuppp homey.
Its stupid. How the fuck VC will help in low light when i shoot weddings? People needs short time to freeze them.
+blackjohnny0 VC helps in any situation. You getting old and your hands are shacking, you've been at a weeding all day making photos and your hands gets tired, you see something and you need to take a photo at a moment notice, VC is always welcome in any lens, always helps.
andreiiasi But on wedding people are moving. They dont stay still waiting as you take picture. How VC will help in that situation? It will not help.
blackjohnny0 It will help. All you have to do is to put your ISO high and not use slow shuter speed.
andreiiasi And if i do that, what is reason to use VC, which only gain is longer time... which i will not use, because i wanna have sharp people???
Wrong...by bring in up the Iso you can use faster shutter speeds and VC only helps to get the image sharper not the other way around. The reason of having VC is to help out you and your lens to get steady shoots.VC is always goo either you use faster speeds or not. I've got this lens my self and I am very happy with it.
Review an F1.8 lens without talking about the bokeh, rookie mistake guys
Which unfortunately is not great and definitely kills either for those wanting it for EF mount. Just settle for the EF 35 f/2 IS which does better everything but weather sealing.
+Dimitrios Tolios haha thanks for the follow up, it's a shame, was looking forward to getting one

Yes, it lacks weather sealing and the MFD, but I don't think I would be shooting many things @ 8in / 20cm with a 35-45.
+Dimitrios Tolios odd.... Every test I've seen shows the canon less sharp with more CA.
GO SONY !!!!
Sorry guys but your ' review' spends 4 minutes discussing VC. What about the optical qualities ? There is no mention of their remarkable close focus ability either. Poor effort.
+gurudeclan supposed to be constructive criticism :( The production is nice.
That 35 is nice, but not $600 nice.
Nicer than Sigmas $799 35mm .... That sells all day.
Wanna help get you to a million so....... "I Subscribed!!!" God bless....
Dump the crap loud music and your videos would be more watchable, as it doesn't make your comment more valid just irritating.
Zoom ring!
More advert than review but hey.....
🖖🏼. First
Too qualitative review.
Just bla bla bla and nothng else ! no optical quality test or discusion.
The fucked up music is really annoying
