Thank you Kate and a very happy new year to you and keep those videos coming and I never heard of Sean Scully before but I really like his work, especially that big one...must be a lot of fun to do and a great pleasure to see.
always dig scully. his work is harder to make than you would think. I've made stripe paintings before, there are so many variables of color, thickness and viscosity of paint, shades, tones, brushstrokes, drips, pure from the tube color, color overlapping color.....its a process that really would take a lifetime to master. i like that big ole painting with the new spray paint sections but its kinda...gawdy too. which is actually a nice change for scully, his work can sometimes be really brice marden/rothko w the atmosphere. the cube paintings...jurys still out they are weird to me. thanks james, i love these videos!
I loved Skully´s work in the 80´s and 90´s. And I like the paintings on aluminum. The stacks loose the drawing like sensation of his paintings, its lines, its edges, the hand in the brush.
Love his work, a great colorist and he has a lot of videos on You Tube which are very interesting. He's the real deal, a street fighter for sure and a misspent youth like many of us have.
Using aluminum as a base works for me. When it comes to new ideas, this is a problem for everyone - especially minimalists like Mr. Scully. Also, no one mentions his drawings, which resonate for me. Has Phyllis Segura had any good ideas lately?
Sean scully is a boss. The painting blue note had amazing passages in it and the drawings are great. If you are having a problem having him move to 3 dimensions, then examine your tiny world view.
The monster blue note is quite impressive in the big space shown here,it looks almost too simple, yet it has authority. The cubed drawings are interesting too,but personally the cubed paintings and sculptures less so.Seems like Scully is very controversial now, reading some of these comments, many people thinking that he has 'got away with painting stripes' for too long. Gary Hume,British artist, also paints on aluminum panels.
3-D or 2-D The sameness is mind numbing. I can see why the Met likes to acquire his work. Safe choice. You are too nice. You are too close to the work and the artists. The word you're looking for is regurgitation.
What a load of rubbish anyone can paint stripes on a canvas .How can this be called art . He's getting paid thousands even millions for just painting stripes. He convinces everyone that he's some kind of master of his craft. I would not even call it abstract art to be honest. If anyone has seen the comedy film The Rebel with Tony Hancock you will know what i'm talking about .
I find this artist's work to be disappointing in the past 5-10 years. He's got all the techniques and rhymes and riddles in his satchel and just cranking it out. I think perhaps his ego and great desire for fame has crippled the great artist he was. Now it's a desperate run to the finish line to win.

Those cube paintings are awesome.

nice video
So far I'm likin' the critical thinking going on with this show. Interesting...
Are these varnished or does the aluminum keep the oil at the top creating the sheen?
I think the latter...
Like it.
i agree , looks like anything goes coz it Scully, guess you didnt ask him foe a comment or you would newer get away
so many peoples just to talk about her life...
I think these new works just don't work, those cubes both as sculpture and paintings are awful. I'd prefer a Rubik cube
The art of saying nothing ...
Looks like he's out of ideas. How far can you go with stripes? Wow, diagonal stripes. Really?
I'M SORRY....NO.
....NOT A SEAN SCULLY FAN...ALLWAYS THOUGHT..OVER-RATED...
