    I have to agree with Sally on the ergonomics. I shot with Nikon for 26 years and started using their digital cameras in 2006, and the Sony ergonomics are far better for me. I love the sensible locations of the buttons, I always hated how Nikon just had like 6 buttons all in a straight line on the back of the camera, I always had to look at what button I was pushing, with Sony the buttons are spaced in a way that you always know what button you’re hitting, you never have to look. BUT the buttons on the older bodies (A9, A7RIII, A7III) are kind of flat and don’t have the best response, however the new buttons (A7RIV, A9II) are exponentially improved (particularly that joystick). This is a great upgrade (even with the same sensor) and well worth the price. Still the highest resolution professional sports camera available, and the addition of the new mechanical shutter is a very big deal, that really brings the A9 series into other areas that it was limited in before.

    This is the first video I've seen on the a9II. Thanks! But man, I think Sony is jumping the shark. Is it because Kaz Hirai left (serving as CEO from 2012 to 2018), and Ken'ichiro Yoshida replaced him? Kaz Hirai seemed to want to push boundaries. I've heard nothing from Ken'ichiro Yoshida, though.

      The question is how long you can develop cameras at this pace so that it makes sense financially? Especially that they are still innovativing faster than Canon and Nikon. I remember Nikon releasing DSLRs in the past and the only upgrade was adding a wifi and changing a grip a bit. I think at first they kept releasing cameras and kept upgrading so fast that some people were frustrated. People were buying a6300 and then a few months later you had a6500. Sony slowed that which for me makes sense financially, but still they are innovating faster than Canon and Nikon.

    I do not understand this whining about camera menu - a complex camera will have a complex menu with more settings. Ergonomics in this context is about being able to customize. And the custom buttons - placement has improved with every model. I like small light bodies & I have small hands so those who complain please be awarethat there are different hand sizes & grips. Sensor stabilization in larger sensors is based more on stabilizing hand movements & in the context of stills slow shutter speeds. Is this different in the panasonic or nikon I do not know. I did tryout the panasonic SH1& it is significantly heavier & not a camera that would fit in the lightweight ergonomic category so not very conducive to subtle flexible handheld work that one requires in precision sports like Table tennis. ( I used to play professionaly many decades ago & one needs very subtle last minute movements for handheld. The tracking that they havedeveloped is phenomenal. The DSLr bodies are simply clunky. Sony's policy has been to bring about paradigm shifts in sensors & then upgrade them. The R2 brought in a BSI 42mp sensor - R3 was incremental - R4 is again a paradigm shift. The same with a9 - it brought in the stacked sensor so to expect in 2 years another sensor is not very realistic. They have designed it keeping the olympics in mind. To be able to relay and transfer images fast etc. Basically theyhave different bodies & lens systems for different needs

      I did a speed test with the A7III using both UHS-I and UHS II cards so you should be able to get some value from that. The only difference is that the A9II has dual UHS II cards so it can process dual raw at the same speed as single raw vs the A7III that slows down when shooting dual raw since the 2nd card slot is slower

    any pointers as to why the A9II EVF would show so many artifacts ( purple blue moire ) and has so little resolution especially while half pressing the shutter ?

    • @learningcameras
      @learningcameras Місяць тому +1

      Yes, when you half press the shutter the EVF quality goes down. I can't remember where it is but I believe there is a setting for EVF or viewfinder frame rate. If this is turned on high, the quality will be sacrificed in order to maintain the better refresh rate. Turn this to standard viewfinder frame rate and the quality should improve. When this camera came out, getting a viewfinder with that resolution at a frame rate high enough for 30fps was unheard of but the camera couldn't do both at the same time. Most phone screens work like this as well where if you turn up the refresh rate of the display, the phone screen can't work at the max resolution

    Hi Dan,
    I think that you and Sally make a great couple and I enjoy watching your videos.
    I have a request for a video, however, I want to tell you a little bit about my Photography. In 2013, I started shooting on a Nikon D600, (their "Entry Level" full frame camera). About 2 years ago, I sold all my Nikon gear, and switched to the Sony a7III. (Their "Basic" Full Frame camera). I had heard what Sony was doing and I wanted to be a part of it.
    When I shot Nikon I had a version of the Holy Trinity, but what I found out was
    that I didn't like it. I have decided for my photography I want to shoot with all Prime Lenses. I have the Zeiss Batis 85mm f/1.8 OSS Lens, and I am going to buy the Sigma 35mm f/1.2 DG DN Art for FE.
    What I can't seem to decide is what camera I want as my primary camera for the next few years. (I will make the Sony a7III my second camera.) I have to decide between the Sony a7RIV and the Sony a9 II. This is not an easy decision!
    The 61MP Sensor on the a7RIV is amazing. I would love to have all that resolution, so I could
    shoot wide and crop my photos in post. Also, having a 26MP APS-C mode would be like having a second focal length lens on my camera.
    I like the a9 II too. I love the electronic shutter that let's you shoot silently, and up to 1/32,000 of a
    second. This would be awesome when paired with the Sigma 35mm f/1.2 DG DN Art FE, because I could shoot with an aperture of f/1.2 at High Noon and blow out the background without over exposing the image. Another thing, I have heard that the a9 II has the better focus system and is much better at driving the big glass like the: 600mm f/4 GM.
    Can you make a video comparing the a9 II to the a7RIV? I think this is a common problem when upgrading from the a7III. Do we go with the electronic shutter or with a super high MP camera? (I can only afford to buy one!)

    now I know why there was no press event for this camera, nothing really to get excited about, everyone already new when the A7r lV came out that the A9ll would have the same ergonomics and sd card slots. so there are almost no surprises with the A9ll, the original A9 had the best focusing system on the planet, and the A9ll is the same. and same sensor. I think only a small percentage of A9 owners will upgrade to this new camera, just like a small percent of A7r lll users will upgrade to the A7r 1V, but for people who don't already own an A9, the A9 ll is a great camera. the ergonomics i know some people will like more, extra weather sealing is always a good thing, the two fast card slots, and the connectivity, 10fps mechanical shutter, but for me personally, I was hoping for a slight raise in MP, and even though the focusing is already amazing, I was hoping to hear that Sony even made it better, and I have been wanting a fully functional tough screen for ages now, I really don't get why it isn't easy for Sony to give it to us. so for now I will be sticking with my A7r lll until the A7r 5 or A9lll comes out, but I will also be curious about the A7s lll, hopefully it has allot more wow factor.

    This is a big reason for sales going way down and only pros and monied people have the cash to spend....For the vast majority of the working class the expense is extreme.On the other hand a amature photographer is forced to actually learn lighting,aperture, iso, as well as capturing subjects that carry emotion ,wonder and curiosity. Dslr's are becoming to expensive and too cover the market of regular people ( many are just as good or better than the so called pro's and experts).

      A9II costs as much as original A9 at launch. Now we're getting bigger grip, better buttons, improved battery life, better weather sealing, 10 fps mechanical shutter, 5 ghz wireless, continuous file transfers even with camera powered down, improved AF over last firmware update, newest Bionz processor. This processor alone is ready for future updates that can improve performance and features as Sony sees fit.

    Sony seems to think the sweet spot is 24mp. While 24mp certainly is enough. Especially if you’re only printing up to 16x24. But If you’re printing larger it would be nicer to have more resolution. I think they should bump their cameras up to 40 or 50. “I mean all of them not just the a7r series cameras”

      as a bird photographer , a7riv or a7riii are slow, a6600 are noisy and less detailed .. 36 mp was the expectation .. anyways Sony needs to do design thinking seriously for the user .. currently they are just in money minting marketing

      Dipesh Mehrotra yeah they definitely do need to start being more innovative again. For the past 2 years it’s been recycled cameras. Except for the Sony a7iii. Which in my opinion is still amazing for the price. I personally don’t think it’s slow. But then again I shoot weddings and not birds.

      If Sony A9 is having problem in clearing 24 megapixel files why ask for more megapixel?

    • @matthoffman6962
      @matthoffman6962 4 роки тому

      Cris Meman who said it’s having a problem clearing 24mp files? This is more to do with the speeds of the memory cards not the camera itself.

    Can I be happy and disappointed, happy that my current A9 is still great. Disappointed missing a few things , why not upgrade the EVF to match A7r4, why not improve the res of the back screen, why not improve the touch screen capability, yes it’s a faster processor pushing the old 24mp sensor, surprised of no new sensor change, no video improvements. Makes the A7r4 look a lot better thought out upgrade. Over all disappointed.
