There definitely does need to be more education of canoeists and kayakers. If you fish the Belmont stretch in the summer the worst thing is the lack of distance from the banks that some kayak, there's just no need for it. I've had my line caught when fishing WITH back leads, some are only just an oars length from the bank.
Definitely. This is a private stretch and I was the only Angler on the bank that week. Its hoi g on all the time. Its human nature, but again no guidance from the kayak companies. There's been many issues over the years with Angling including discarded line, litter and Lead shot. All of which we address as an industry with many educational projects. Angling changed the whole lead shot industry laws for the protection of wild life. We address problems and are continually monitored/licenced and penalised. Can the canoeists say the same?
I'm with you on this, good and bad people in both fishermen & canoeists. i've fished the Severn for 30 years and now see the difference in canoe traffic, the main problem is the hire centres dont seem to educate the newbies in river edicate and are only interested in making money, most these people dont even know that they are doing wrong when they pass anglers bashing and shouting, and are totally oblivious to anglers, you can always tell an experienced canoeist as they pass you with respect, but I've also seen more rubbish left by anglers on the bank these days. I guess a sign of the times.
Misinformed I’m afraid. One needs a waterways license to go canoeing which costs £45.00 per annum. No doubt there will be people that don’t buy a license just as there are many fishermen that don’t buy a rod license. Also I’ve lost count how many times I’ve seen floats, lures, hooks and line hanging from trees on the opposite banks. You are right, there are good and bad canoeists just as there are good and bad fishermen, but most fishermen are a miserable lot and have an attitude problem. Just saying.
Not misinformed. The need of a license to paddle certain rivers is disputed and a very grey area. But who polices the canoe license anyway? It’s more like a donation, not a legal requirement. Find me a case of a prosecution for unlicensed paddling? Kayak companies are not refusing hire without one. Many fisheries will not allow anglers on the bank without a license. As for anglers being miserable, you would be too if you saw such an imbalance in the financial contribution by other river users. Line and lures in trees is a little bit less unpleasant than human excrement and toilet roll. I believe there’s an education process on both sides, but you cannot expect equilibrium until all parties are licensed and contributing in the same way.
it definitely does Dave because it's only heading one way with the types of people that will end up on the canoes. in Oxford on the canal hire boats were not to much of a problem 10 years ago but now they've ruined the canal as a fishery. Maily cheap deals for stag and hen weekends. boats packed with pissed up people bouncing of the canal banks at speed. Be sad if the Wye ends up like that

So the litter was left by a paddler and not an angler??? What about all the line that is left on the banks and left hanging from tree branches???
