"This Brent Mydland song, debuted in 1988, was a show-stopper whenever it was played through the summer of 1990, and this was the final live version by the Grateful Dead. All 23 versions feature something very special." - David Lemieux
I know Buffalo from the year before is out, and I can find a boot video of this entire show, but is there any chance the whole show may ever be released on video?
What a powerhouse tune and how it blows my mind when these six fellows create such Mighty Power live on stage, Fantastic! my hat's off to You Dave for all you do and are, Mr. Beautiful:)
I've loved these guys for 31 years! I can be at my darkest and they always pull me out! I was a social misfit, nowhere to go- and then I found the lot. Thank you- ultimate freedom
RIP Brent - the connection between him and Jerry was amazing. I love seeing them locking eyes and just smiling. He was really something special..As they say, "only the good die young"
That growly tenor... no one else had that voice- or one close to it in warmth when he got down to preachin' from the organ. As a Baritone Tenor, there are very few songs of his I can sing. For all that throat, he hit those notes. Soared. That key change in We Can Run... and on.
I really needed to hear this song right now. My end of the year is going downhill. I'll be listening this daily (hourly) for inspiration. Bless you, Brent. Happy Years everyone else.
My favorite Brent song by far. I quoted this song in a college philosophy class and the professor said don’t use Brent’s words, they’re too deep. This show was 10 days after my birthday and sadly Brent died 10 days after this day
Amazing tune and he was so much better than Jeff Chimenti, but Jeff is more rated because he is great at being a secondary player, love Jeff but he isn’t Grateful Dead material, only Dead cover material
Brent brought something exceptional to the band, he had so much soul. I love it all but his time is my favorite period of music. There was or is nothing like a GD show.
Nvr has been, nvr will be again. This lil time in history we were so fortunate to have taken part in. If U've nvr seen it, U definitely should see "And Miles to Go Before I Sleep: On Tour With the GratefulDead Summer '93" it really captures the essence of the experience. All footage of the lot & the DeadHeads, with perfect interviews of credible folks from the era (Leary, Wavy Gravy, Kesey, Rock Scully,...etc) I have it on a DVD
I've imagined what it would've been like to experience this particular performance live It def translates to the youtube viewer in 2024 As a Head I feel this is w out question , One of , if not the Deads most emotionally powerful and moving performances of alltime Brent's full spirit shines here ✨️ I'm just gonna say this is my fave performance of the dead out of them all No other makes me feel so free of worry and connected w their music
Correct CSN opened. I remember pulling through the neighborhood leading to the stadium. The people were awesome! Offering cheap parking, grills fired up. Just so friendly. I remember more about that than the actual show.🤪
I’m shortly going to miss phill singing this catch e little tune of my faverots all of songs that phill song wear rely good I was always hanging out in the phill zone.OpHILL. OPHIll. Rest in peace until we all meat again fairly well
@@kevinfredettte2191 This was only my 2nd show and it really put the hook in me. And my 1st show was the March 1990 Knickerbocker Arena show that featured that magnificent version of Loser. Ended up seeing them 25 times over the next few years.
I missed out on the Knickerbocker shows so I went to Nassau Coliseum instead and got to witness the Branford sit in, although I think the 3/30 show was better lol
RIP to a Truly Amazing Musician Brent Mydland !!!!! His Voice and just the passion he brought to the stage, It Blow's me Away every time I listen to him Sing/Play and just The Dead In general, Absolute Goosebumps !!!!!!!! THE MUSIC NEVER STOPPED !!!!!!!!! 7-7-89 still my Absolute Favorite Gem from Brent Mydland !!!!!! 💀⚡️💀⚡️💀⚡️
I still have that shirt stashed away in my basement, given to me by my wife (not a deadhead but put up with me anyway) back then, maybe a year before this show.
Brent Mydland was a treasure. Loved his playing and his passionate voice, and this song has some tragically philosophical lyrics. Thanks for the memories, sweet prince.
Every time I hear these 88-90 shows with Brent I’m transported back to the hikes our family took in Arches NP when we were listening to these shows on heavy rotation. Thanks for posting.
From the bottom of my heart, I always wanted to give Brent Mydland a break. In this, which I'm hearing for the first time in 2019, I see a way I might be able to do that. Soulful. Beautiful.
His passion in singing and keyboards was incredible. I saw his last show and a few days later he was gone. We were fortunate to have him and Jerry while we could. That being said I really do like what John Mayer has brought to the Dead. I need to see them yet.
I've loved Dead & Company's effort to keep the vibe flowing for another generation to have a glimpse of. Let There Be Songs To Fill The Air. The Music Never Stopped. Thanx guys!🎶💜✌
Thank you thank you thankyou!! I loved those Old Orchard Park shows man. And the Boys we're Sooo on that night. Spectacular Blow Away! Gratefully yours (~);} Thanks.
Billy was probably thinking about that Craft Services ham sammich he had for lunch... Always seems his mind is a million miles away, but his hands and arms are right there in the *millisecond.*
Everyone seems burned out af by 1990, but Brent Mydland still on fire! I'm more into Anthem of the Sun / Uncle John's Band era Dead, but gotta give it to Brent, he's still rockin out. Definitely made the performance for me
this is the only dead song by someone other then jerry or bob that really is great....... brent midland was a true bay area person..... a real blues singer RIP brother... see u in heaven n will get some speedballs 2getjer n jam :)
So. I didnt like greatful dead growing up. Never heard that much on them. But now in my 30s I am blown away at the most unique psychedelic soulful bluesy rock band ever. I love brent prob the most as vocals but jerry is a close second and Bob might be my third favorite but dude can still sing. The way they just played through everything. The crazy setlists because it was all organic. I get it now. Not only was it organic it was transforming constantly. That's what made the dead the dead. I think. I'm not an aficionado I prob would rank 500 millionth place in knowledge but I do kinda look like a younger Jerry I feel a spiritual thing with him and this group and I can't explain it more. I've never ever experienced anything like these guys. Nothing even compares. The soul here is insane .brent also made me cry during dear mr fantasy cause I just was overwhelmed with his passionate vocals. Someone stop me I'll go on all night. Just discovered them in a honest way about a month ago. My long strange trip has just begun ❤ miss you brent and Jerry
I became aware of Dead when album, Terrapin Station came out. Bad album, but started to listen to cassettes from live concerts. Brent came in, in 1979 - 1990 the longest tenured keyboard player! Loved his voice (unique) and fit in perfectly with Jerry, & Bobby. I grew up the entire 1980's Dead. I thought Brent added to the band. Him & Jerry had a great love for each other. When you see Jerry smiling, it's usually because him and Brent were in a groove! Too bad, drugs killed both of them. After Brent passed, you could just see Jerry's performances go down.

Saw the first one, Alpine 88. I'll never forget it.
I Thank you
release hershey park please.
RIP Brent. Wish you could have played for us longer...
Honestly I think he would’ve loved today on a progressive tip
There’s always that special feeling In your heart when you feel Brent’s soul through his singing
I adore Brent Mydland so much. Super talented. Carrying on the wand from Pig and Keith who were so amazing. I love them all.
I was down in a Hole and played this long ago it still remains the absolute most heavy and uplifting musical experience of my

RIP Brent - the connection between him and Jerry was amazing. I love seeing them locking eyes and just smiling. He was really something special..As they say, "only the good die young"
partly because they used hard drugs together
Glad I was there to catch this show. dBrent was dead ten days later - So sad... Such a talent and contribution to the Dead's lexicon,
Brent Had one of the best voices out there. His death was truly a loss
That growly tenor... no one else had that voice- or one close to it in warmth when he got down to preachin' from the organ. As a Baritone Tenor, there are very few songs of his I can sing. For all that throat, he hit those notes. Soared. That key change in We Can Run... and on.
I was at the Chicago Tinley Park show that was his last show. What a performance he had that night, sang an outstanding "The Weight" that night.
Anthony Tavella just amazing
Brent was just just so freaking talented on so many levels.
@@Ashencrowe counter tenor actually
This might not be “the tearjerker” version, but knowing it’s the last gives it a different sadness altogether.
ForgottenSpace this is a flawless version, not the best, but no mistakes and a great vocal.
@@777jones early in first set is why
What’s second best to 7/7/89? Anyone? I’m legit asking. Thx
Brent brought magic with him every time he played. They all did really ⚡️💀🌹
Yes all that love pouring out of everyone I bet they were exhausted afterwards
Brent was special I just love him ❤

He didn't write the lyrics, Barlow did.
Wow, I knew this was near end of his life but 10 days is sad to hear. This was truly his song.
Blake Pitts touché
Hey Dane :) I was born 3 daze later
If I may ask, which lyrics did you quote?
The line “when a man and a woman come together as strangers, and when they part they’re usually strangers still” will forever give me chills
Deep..
Amazing tune and he was so much better than Jeff Chimenti, but Jeff is more rated because he is great at being a secondary player, love Jeff but he isn’t Grateful Dead material, only Dead cover material
true but im not dead and im damn good
Brent will never blow away
Phil’s bass tone is captured on this recording so well. It grabs my soul and doesn’t let go.

Beautiful song, especially live. Lucky for all the people who were there...
Thank you, Willie I cried, didn't mean to but this is a beautiful thing that brought joy to this old head. It soars with love of angels.

Can we talk about Phil's dolphin shirt? OUTSTANDING.
and that Bass!!!:)
I used to have that shirt! Early Liquid Blue, I think. Good comment!
Had that shirt also, think I got it at Cal Expo a month before this show

Great to go down memory lane with this great awesome from Brent! Thinking of all the friends I had that were certainly at this show!
I love Jerry and Brent together. They each supported each other. It was like they are best fans of one another.
Brent was really something ❤
I can't love this enough. RIP Brent! Yes, I want to know real love! Thank you for sharing.
Liz Field Agreed...on all you said!
Brent was such an amazing talent - just laid it all out there every chance he had.
Grateful Dead’s live show sound design is unparalleled tbh
You can tell from 89 to 90 something really shifted in Garcia’s stage presence, a lot more sublime in the summer of 90, dabblin.
Then went full blown after brent demise
Nice of Jerry to wax his legs for this show, reducing drag improves performance.
he was deep in his diving phase right here!
The one thing I love about DeadHeads...their sense of humor! Thank you for the laugh. 😆
he was a man committed to his craft
I told my son what Brent meant to us and how sad it was when he passed.
Brent was at the top of his game when he died. Such a tragedy.
My second time seeing The Dead. I didn't realize it at the time, but it was my first and last time hearing Brent sing this in concert. What a treat!!!
