Michael Bassett is New Zealand’s best-known political historian. He is the author of fifteen books, nearly all of them with a political theme. His specialty is political biography. Dr Bassett was New Zealand’s Minister of Health and Local Government between 1984 and 1987, and then Minister of Internal Affairs, Local Government, Civil Defence and Arts and Culture between 1987 and 1990. He spent ten years (1994-2004) as a tribunal member of the Waitangi Tribunal that deals with claims by New Zealand’s first settlers, the Maori. Between 2009 and 2013 he was a Board member of the Museum of New Zealand: Te Papa Tongarewa. He has taught history at the University of Auckland and was J.B. Smallman Professor of History at the University of Western Ontario during the early 1990s. He was Fulbright Professor of New Zealand History at Georgetown University in Washington DC in 2002.
The Maoris did not cede full sovereignty at Waitangi in 1840. This lie has recently been put out by the Waitangi Tribunal at the behest of part-Maori radicals. By Article One of the Treaty the chiefs ceded full sovereignty of these violent and anarchic islands to Queen Victoria forever as the speeches of Rewa, Te Kemara, Kawiti and other chiefs of the time show. Twenty years later at the Kohimarama (Auckland) conference, the largest gathering of chiefs in New Zealand history, they declared that full sovereignty had been ceded in 1840. If the chiefs did not cede sovereignty, they would have continued their cannibalism, which meant a lot to some of them.
@@Winstonsmithsalias Those tribes, like Tuhoe and Tainui, whose chiefs did not sign the Treaty, are not bound by it. The obvious answer to this is that Tuhoe, Tainui, etc. should return to the taxpayer all their substantial Treaty settlements. For how do those tribes take a settlement from a Treaty that their tribal forebears did not sign? However, as is so often the case, the obvious is not the truth. By living peacefully under the law for several generations - paying taxes, receiving welfare benefits, fighting in the armed services, etc. - these and other tribes have, by their actions, accepted the sovereignty of the Crown. Whether or not their forebears signed the Treaty is irrelevant. End of story.
@@berniefynn6623 Tuhoe and Tainui were by far the worst of the maori tribes, non stop war parties, murder, slavery, cannabilism....dozens upon dozens of other tribes wanted Crown protection from the aforementioned, but you are quite right that those 2 outfits did not sign, yet the taxpayers have been forced to hand over hundreds of millions of dollars .....
As the first Podiatrist to form a primary Diabetic Foot service with Ngat Hine Health Trust I can attest to the DNA problem. We had a free service with an 18 % DNA rate. Granted some whanau are so isolated the struggled to attend, which is why we did Marae clinic too. But still a problem. I have many stories about how corrupt some of the Maori Health Providers have been over the last 20 years.
Yep if there’s a fiddle they can’t help themselves. The whananga’s have people enrolled who don’t exist and get beneficiary payments. The east coast floods exposed that game as early on there were hundreds of “missing”, people. Probably from the Wananga enrollment forms.
Wrong headline. There was nothing about iwi extortion, but it was good to hear from Dr Bassett. Loved listening to him in my failed days to the Uni of Auckland. I also followed his career and respect how he changed his political views. Best wishes Michael from Whakatane.
When you subscribe to Platform Plus (either monthly or annually) you get access to the full interview which is about double the length of the UA-cam free version. I suspect that is where the Iwi extortion will be found.
Wasn't it the Labour Party that introduced FEES for participation in tertiary education? Back in my day, university was essentially free for NZ citizens. And universities did not spout politically correct nonsense, as they now do.
I agree - I got my BA before fees, and had excellent lecturers, especially in English lit and history. And the amount we got through and read was huge, compared to now, with their “Course Readers”. I would never have known what any of my lecturers thought about politics, etc..

An amazing man , it’s interesting that Bassett , Palmer, Douglas and even Moor and to a lesser extent Lange are our best remembered politicians . They were not stuck with ideologies but rather moved , not to the right as the interviewer suggests but adopted common sense stances which at times moved them away from their base . Always truthful they did not avoid the difficult decisions . It is a shame they were not elected for longer. I am embarrassed to admit that I never voted for them , isn’t hindsight a wonderfull thing.

I may had read your comment wrong, but you said the chiefs “did not”, sign over sovereignty in 1840?
That seems to contradict the later points.
