FASIs are caused by vacuolated myelin in children with NF1. FASIs regress and should have disappeared at the adult age/18-20 years. FASIs are not neoplastic, but it might be difficult to distinguish them from low grade glial tumors. The role of neurofibromin as an oncosuppressor gene in the RAS MAP kinase pathway is briefly mentioned.
