Fabulous cast : Jose Van Dam (Figaro), Lucia Popp (Susanna), Gundula Janowitz (Contessa Almaviva), Gabriel Bacquier (Almaviva), Federica Von Stade (Cherubino), Jane Berbié (Marcellina).
Frederica is ideal vocally physically... and Lucia Popp is just the most delicious Susanna to me...
I saw her do this in Paris in 1980. She was the darling of Paris. Was there ever a silkier, more sensitive and nuanced rendition of this aria? I think not. She was THE Cherubino of her generation, and stills wears that crown, imo.

I think we have to wait a long time to find someone to top Von Stade in this role.
There are a lot of things i like about her voice and way of playing this role, but most of all i love the way she puts just the right emotions in her voice and how she is simply bursting with repressed energy and emotion and the exact right places of the song, thus portraying the emotions of a teenager full of hormones with just her voice.
she is the cutest, most perfect cherubino... this is also my sort of signature aria and i love the repressed energy she shows... it's as if she's about to burst! plus i just love her voice. flicka i want to be you!

ho ascoltato la von Stade più volte alla Scala in questo ruolo. IMPRESSIONANTE! Praticamente perfetta come Cherubino. Esattamente come la Dupuy in Romeo e Kraus in Werther! La totale identificazione fra un cantante e un ruolo.

WOW. This is the best Flicka I've seen. I saw her in Fort Worth last year, and she is still amazing. Talk about effortless singing in this video! From 2:00-end I am in awe. Her give and take with the line is flawless! BRAVA!

I am with you too. I prefer, for example, the historic rendition at Glyndebourne, 1973. Cherubino is a boy of no more 16 or 17 yo, and his attitude must be more nervous, most restless... However, how splendid Flicka is here... here and ever!

Magnífica la voz, como no podía ser menos tratándose de Frederica, pero me gusta más la versión de 1973 en el festival de Glyndebourne, con John Pritchard, que era más rápida, más vital ¡Aquello sí fue una genial representación, la creación de un personaje nunca superado! ¡Viva Frederica, entonces y ahora!
I definitely agree Flicka is exceptional here, really. More youthful and more beautifully performed than all her other clips on UA-cam for sure, I think. But how about Berganza? The beauty of her tone, especially as Cherubino, is unrivalled I find.

@Alexandrinio1995 No!!! It's a trouser role, written for a mezzo, specifically to underline the fact that Cherubino is not yet a fully-grown man.
it sounds so good! But right now I have to learn that aria, and I'm telling you, it's not easy... I've been having classical singing lessons for one year now and this aria is the most difficult one I've ever had to learn.. "L'ho perduta me meschina" was way easier...^^

Von Stade is exquisite. I like "Voi, che sapete" better, though -- can you post that?
Von Stade is my favorite Cherubino I've seen (other than my sister, who played the role in college). I tend to prefer sopranos in this role to mezzo-sopranos for the bright and pure quality that they have. So many mezzos take this role and make it dark and heavy.
Flicka is the best Cherubino ever. Her performance in the 1986 Met tv broadcast is even better than this one, more active and compulsive, and sadder somehow; just more nuanced. I wish someone would post that.

but Von Stade is a lyrics mezzo.
sometimes mezzo's souns like sopranos.. but I know that they also can fill out a soprano role, like a soprano can fill out a mezzo role...
nevermind, she has a bright likeable mezzo voice, but i don't like her vibrato..it's to fast!
yes she is amazing but still to be perfect in character of Cherubinon one has to be male!
