I still don't understand why a replacement for the indispensable A-10 is not being considered. The engine (no afterburner) and airframe are relatively low tech and inexpensive. Incorporate engine improvements, composite instead of titanium armor, ability to carry the latest weapons, upgraded avionics and communications, newer electronic countermeasures, the existing cannon and VOILA! Close air support is 'back in business'

Yes, that F135 has a very distinctive sound. I miss hearing it every day. Though if you put it side-by-side with its little brother, the F-22's F119, you could hardly tell the difference. Makes sense, since they're mostly the same engine.
Don't you know it! Having been a Gunfighter in the '70's at Mountain Home I spent many off duty days out on Saylor Creek Range along the Bruneau Canyon watching the Aardvarks do it in the dirt. Nothing would be finer than watching an F model tear that Star Wars Canyon a new one easy peasy... I doubt any of these aircraft are but a fart in the wind compared to the F-111's low level abilities...
@@farout1220 I worked on the F-4 Phantom for 3 years in the Air Force, and the F-111 for one year. The F-111s were grounded most of that year (1970) because so many were crashing. We referred to them as Our "Triple Threat" aircraft... It bombs them, strafes them, and FALLS on them." My field was weapons loading. The F-4 was a dream to work on. The 111 was a nightmare on many levels. Sorry if I stepped on your onions.
