How to photograph the stars in New Zealand

- This is how to photograph the stars in New Zealand. In this video I visit Tasman Lake in Mount Cook National Park, New Zealand. See and learn my camera settings to photograph the stars. This would easily have to be one of the best astrophotography sessions I've ever had, even though I didn't have the exact lens I needed with me. But at the end of the day, you make the most of the camera gear and lenses you're travelling with. Dead batteries, frozen cameras, it was all happening on this night. But I'll never forget how bright the stars are in this part of New Zealand. Please enjoy this awesome location :)

Adrian that final shot is a portfolio photo for sure. Epic for sure. And with a 2.8 just awesome. About the batteries - at least it wasn't for the D850.
Thanks so much for watching Steven. Yes, thank goodness it wasn't the main photographic camera, which coincidentally was down to one bar haha! Very happy with the shot in the end. Worth braving the freezing cold for :)
Your shots are beyond amazing Adrian. WOW. The 7:04 shot looks magical!

Thanks Peter for watching. Really is a great spot there. I'd love to go back and just go hiking without the photography side of things happening. Peaceful as anything, and close up with nature.
Just Gorgeous!!❄️😍I know the feeling when your batteries dies on you!😝 Your storytelling is just really great, and the shots amazing, loved watching this! 😃👌🏻
Thanks so much for watching, really appreciate your kind comment, cheers :)
Indeed a magical place! Sorry to hear about your battery and your lens. But still, everything went well, those are really amazing photos!
Cheers, thanks so much for watching. Ended up being a great night :)
this is so lovely. tq much
Thank you for watching 🙏
Gear is a killer hey - We are sticking with one camera and 2 iphone 11s because we need phones them anyway. It’s so hard when doing photo and video hey, so many mistakes to be made and at least one happens every time. You were able to salvage some really good results and that’s the main thing 👌 Amazing place
Yeah just one of those things. Probably the fact that I was exhausted from doing a dawn shoot, then driving 4 hours and rushing out to the location. Less haste, less waste next time :)
Amazing location and amazing images Adrian 👌 I felt your pain in finding your batteries dead but it made no difference to the quality of the video and story you produced. Great piece of work. Cheers, Cliff
Clifton Ticehurst thanks Cliff glad you liked the video. I think the cold wacked my batteries that night. Was lucky to get the shot in the end was down to one bar on the D850. Lessons learned. Cheers mate 🙏
What a beautiful picture, thank you for sharing - how did you make it back to the parking at night 😀
Good question - made a lot of wrong turns, but eventually found my car. It was so dark!
Just came across your channel and wow! What was that app you used? it seems very handy!
Hi Dan - PhotoPills is the app. Thanks for watching 🙏
@@adrianalfordphotography awesome thanks for that. Just what I needed. Going to try get some photos tonight
Hi Adrian, good informative videos. With regatd to astrophotography, I have a Nikon D850 with a Nikon ED AF-S Nikkor 28-70mm 1:2.8 lens. This might seem a strange question, when you set the lens to manual and on the camera, do you set the aperture ring wide open at f2.8 on the lens or leave it as it is (f22) as the camera will set the aperture? Hope this makes sense.
Regards
Glen
Thanks for watching Glen. Definitely you need the lens wide open at F2.8 you need as much light as you can. If you watch this other D850 astrophotography video youll see all my settings - ua-cam.com/video/k8bnAQVxGjk/v-deo.htmlsi=iOfXTwfE1tF6s1vD
