Beautiful Vintage Haughton Escalators @ Macy's, Oakland Mall, Troy, MI

These are the main escalators in the Macy's at Oakland Mall, which is currently the largest Macy's in the Detroit metro area. These seem to be in the best condition of all the escalators at this mall, which is impressive, since these are more than fifty years old. Strangely, they seem to be staggered on level 2, because the distance between 2 and 3 is shorter than the others. One of them has two identical state ID plates.
This is one of just fourteen known remaining sets of Haughton escalators in existence, and one of two sets in the Detroit metro area.

The Macy’s at my local mall in South Portland, ME still has its original haughton escalators from its opening in the late 60s. They also still run great.
I was just editing my Haughton records today and wondered if they were still original there. Glad to hear that they are.

I used to shop at this store a lot when I visited my late Aunt and Uncle who lived in Ann Arbour and I believe what you see of the Escalators is it. I think this store opened in 1967 or 1968. Wrong...there is a newer set of Glass Escalators at the front of the store leading in and out of the Lower Level Men's Department. They come/go directly into the main mall. I think they were installed in the early nineties. The are kind of in the middle of the main entrance from the mall.
