yeah! they use unity and a tool. i know the guy who programmed edens garden and he's a very talented guy whos very open to sharing his resources with others
@@cherryzeroI’ve talked with Sweden, the maid dev, quite a lot and I’ve seen firsthand how easy it really is. Unless you make new minigames you just need sprites, ui, and a trial room. Ik the nsd is litterally a box for text, what type of text is it, what animation, who’s talking. So I’m really excited
Producer of Project: Eden's Garden here! Thank you so much for mentioning us. Your video basically summarizes how game development, specifically in DR Games can be very hard to develop from time to time. But I think another point that needs to be mentioned is the creative direction your Project. Although many people have their unique ideas on how they would use different tropes in the premise of their Killing Game, there is also a technical matter of whether it’s feasible to develop that feature or not. And while you mentioned that everything is made for free, time is another important asset that even when you have the most talented people, wont do any good if they can’t work on it. That being said, I really liked your thoughts on the matter and hopefully be excited for when we release chapter 1 🍎
i have so much respect for you guys!!! Best of luck as you continue on in the DR process. I cannot imagine doing all of the difficult work of producing a fangan for free…
@@Lena.- when i saw a posted gameplay of this "eden s garden" i asked myself : "wait, why is this sooo danganronpa style? same creators?" The person behind design practiced a lot because of being inmerse in DR universe, must be a lover, not just entertainer for likes and monetization, as this shows effort.
*Danganronpa Another and Super Danganronpa Another 2 were the first Fangames I have watched and man that was a fun ride. After that I checked a lot of fangames, I liked most of the fangames I have seen, I don't really care about what art style they have, all I cared about were the characters, their design, Ultimate Talent, and the plot.* *Project Edens Garden is currently my favorite fangame, currently top 3 for me...* *Top 3:* *Super Danganronpa Another 2* *Danganronpa F: Shattered Hope* *Project Eden's Garden*
BRO SHOULD I WATCH shattered hope,or despair time idk which one Also I don't care about the art style either, unless it looks like shit or i don't like it (Forcing my self to watch every fan game of Danganronpa I can to master the art style)
In my opinion Super Danganronpa Another 2 is one of the best fan made Danganronpa out there with many twists and unique plot. I am excited for Eden Garden and see how that goes.
The fangans getting quite a bit of attention I would say are all good. Imo a good fangan needs a good story and good art for me to get invested. The Another Duology is frickin amazing, Despair Time is currently my favorite, and I have high hopes for Eden's Garden. It took me a while to get used to the art if F:Shattered Hope, and there isn't a lot yet for Brave: A Coward's Paradise, but I'd love to see more of those. Lapse was fun and beautiful, but the pacing was a bit off for me to fully like but it's still very respectable. Antebellum I need to give a better shot bc the art has improved over time. I hope the projects currently under development can achieve greatness in the future.
Yeah antibellum is super rough in its first chapter but it’s improvements are wild. I mean I still think that it’s a bit fast paced and the writing revolves a bit too much around characters trauma dumping instead of actually building proper relationships. However it has a really unique vibe to it and the character designs are so good that I’m honestly content to overlook a lot of the flaws which will hopefully improve as time moves forward
The Best Fangan taking all aspects into account in my opinion has to be another 2 rn. It had some of the best plot twists I've seen. Period. Holy hell chapters 4 or even we can say 3 onwards it became it's own thing entirely, and so far nothing has come close to it for me. The promising ones that can compete sdra2 when theyre finished are Eden's Garden, Shattered Hope, (He)Artless Deceit etc.
i believe **some** fanganronpas are better imo, no matter how long or short they are, most (edens garden, shattered hope, despair time) all caught my attention fast and left me wanting more while the canon dr games were kind of dry
@@DiiDiiCakezz yes, exactly!! especially with the characters, i notice some fangans have much more intriguing or realistic characters than the canon games which i enjoy
I think a big thing with fangans is that since they aren't allowed to monetize it's very hard to make something similar to triple As when budgets are non-existent, doubly so since a smaller team means everything takes longer. I love Eden's Garden but for so many people to stick with it for like a year per episode (6+ years total probably), for a project with no revenue, when they're already so talented... I have hope and pray for it but I worry it'll get cancelled haha. At least everything till then will be hype.
@@teateakira5971 The fact that the developers wanted to make them different from your typical Danganronpa settings too, makes me hyped for what they have for us soon in the future.
The fact Shattered Hope hasn't been mentioned a lot in these comments is a unpleasant surprise. Speaking as a creative writing major, it has without question the best writing and storytelling (I'd argue cast too, although that's much more subjective) in the whole fandom. It kinda really sucks to see EG overshadow it. Maybe controversially, but SH in it's prolouge was a lot more successful on the writing front, in my opinion - which isn't to say EG's was remotely bad either. They deserve to be at more equal popularity; they both equally stand out from the rest for their own reasons I think Danganronpa: Heartless Deceit is another fangan I'm going to absolutely love when it releases, the storytelling in the trailers alone is incredible. Would suggest anyone reading this to check it out. It's worth your time.
Have you read "Operation V.K."? That one only exists in book form, but to me it's still a proper "fangan", and it's the one I personally would nominate as "best writing and storytelling in the whole franchise". Its story is as slow-paced and detailed as V3 (maybe more), giving the reader plenty of time to get attached to characters just as well as in a game. During investigations and trials, multiple characters are doing their own thing, pursuing their own goals, which makes them feel compelling. The overarching mystery is also very detailed, with each chapter revealing something new in the backstory and connecting more of the dots. It even treats the canon with respect, expanding on it while not violating the "spirit" of the story, which is rare to see in fanfiction. And the final trial is emotionally satisfying on multiple levels, resolving many conflicts at the same time. FYI, toward the end it heavily leans into a Zero Escape crossover, so a basic familiarity with that series is recommended. Then there are also some crossovers with other books, movies and games, but all of those get explained when needed.
@KingofHearts No, that's fair. It entirely depends what your looking for. Shattered Hope, while having those Danganronpa comic relief moments, overall takes itself pretty seriously. Buuut, Danganronpa's charm comes from the fact that it's hardly ever 100% serious; there's almost always something wacky and over the top to cut the tension. So comparing two different writing styles, which are both good at doing what those writing styles are trying to achieve, is a little unfair of me. I was just being overdramatic to get a point across, lol
It’s varying quality. For me, while I’m not very experienced with the fangan community, DRA let me rediscover how I felt when playing the first Danganronpa. It was actually better, because I spent my original DR experience unraveling the logic behind the spoilers id seen online so I wasn’t discovering anything. I kept myself spoiler-free for DRA and SDRA2, though, so I got to connect and be torn from those characters in real time. DRA gave me back something I never thought I’d have again, and that’s why I loved it so much. Definitely looking forward to properly getting through Eden’s Garden!!
I really hope we get more Kill/Cure content. The cast alone looks amazing. Love the talents and they all have such distinct looks and traits. I’m really digging Eden’s Garden so far too. And Lapse isn’t bad at all but for some reason I just can’t get into it. Not sure why. It’s wild that Danganronpa is practically its own genre at this point. Props to all fangame creators, I envy your talent and dedication❤️
I frequently visit Kill/Cure's tumblr, and they have been making about 9 posts a month, so I'd say they're pretty active. Also, a week and a half ago they posted a "sprite & concept artist application" post, if someone's interested.
Wowie it's me (The Danganronpa Antebellum creator) and from the perspective of someone who creates fangans and started working on Antebellum when I was the grand age of 14 (which explains why the prologue and chapter 1 is so crusty I did nearly all of that myself) fangame making is... Really not easy! I've kinda given up trying to replicate canon and I've instead tried to focus on making Antebellum good in its own right even if it doesn't 100% replicate canon Dr (Because I tried to do that early on and the gameplay suffered from it) so Yipee. I think the reason a lot of fangans fail is people are more concerned about getting an audience and popularity than working on the fangan for what it is. Fangans should be made out of passion and it's a shame how some Devs just don't seem to get that.
OMG wow for 14 what you did create was great! I bet creating this series has definitely help you grow in many ways too. I wish you and the rest of your team (if you have one) the best!
Hello! If you could, I’d love for you to help me create a fangame. I adore yours and I am just like you at 14 (in fact I am 14) so I’d love some guidance if you can!
i'm SO excited for eden's garden. at first i was so worried that nothing would end up coming out of it, but now like. i have full faith in this team to make something great. ive never looked into fangans before but after playing the prologue of p:eg i'm really considering playing the ones that are out in english right now!
I’m currently working on some Fanganrompas but my Issue is that I don’t seem to have enough Time sense I’m in high school and plenty of other reasons aka HOMEWORK AND ITS ONLINE… Also it’s mostly Fanfics so it’s easy as heck
dra and sdra2 are legitimately some of the best games i’ve ever played. they genuinely made me STOP being a danganronpa fan bc i was able to see just how much wasted potential they had. like it’s crazy that Just Some Guy managed to make danganronpa better than the people who made danganronpa😭 also (s)dra doesn’t treat most of its gay characters like a joke so🙏
Personally, there are some that are kind of lackluster. But there are some that are as good, or dare I say BETTER than the original games. Specifically the another duology, despair time, and Eden's Garden (Lapse I like but it has too many issues for me in good conscious to put it on the same level as the others)
@@megarotom1590 Yeah Lapse was promising but kinda fell flat haha you could say the quality _lapsed_ a bit there... (but for a free passion project I'm not really complaining haha)
idk dude. Hate to be pessimistic but the chances of another game releasing is very low if not 0. That’s probably why attention is being driven more to fangans recently
@@cherryzero Well at least Kodaka and Spike Chunsoft will be releasing another game next year called Rain Code, which is another mystery game, so there's that to look forward to. Anything Kodaka is a part of now is always going to get my attention since I consider him a 'mad genius' lol.
Thanks for making a video about this. I would also have the opportunity to share what I think about fan games compared to the OG games. To start, I liked the OG series mainly because of its consistency in the difficulties of each cases from part 1 to 3 and so far, none of the fan games have beaten the cases from the OG when it comes to writing. I agree with what most people say that they didn't felt attached with the characters from thh. I personally think it's because time was too short for us to absorb each character in dangan thh. To explain what I meant about the cases from the fan games not being as well-written, I've seen that the fan games failed to write the flow of the trials well. Often most of the dialogues are just pastime and all I did was just wait for the important parts(meaning the mini-games and challenges in each trial). This is not the case in the original where I read every dialogue and don't feel bored when doing so. Now for the BDAs and executions, I believe any fan game has equal potential to make at least this better than the OG. Since the fan games did not have to worry about any restrain which the OG had, they are free to make these all look worse and more stomach-turning. As to character writing, SDR2 is peak among the OG Danganronpa series. THH didn't do so well and DRV3 is quite decent but SDR2 is just way superior even tho all the characters in that series lived unlike in the other games. Now I would like to comment about what I have observed from other Danganronpa fans. Surely most of them discovered Danganronpa because of the original and only a few might have because of the fan games. And yeah, they all want more killing games like I do. Well, I actually brought this topic up to share what I think about fans comparing the OG to the fan games. Well surely, fan games are made to create storylines not made by the original in order to appeal to fans who wanted something new. I don't agree with people saying some fan games are better than the original. Well, I think they could be equal at best but the consistency that the original has pulled off is way too hard to emulate and surely only a few could accomplish such feat. One fan game that comes to mind is the Another series. I didn't look much into the other fan games since almost none are even finished yet so I think it's not right to compare a full game or series to something that was axed or not completed by the writer/writers. Another series did quite well in building up tension as well as the original in each chapter. The characters from Another 1 are more well written than the second as in the first you would feel more attached, maybe even more than the characters from Dangan THH and V3. I didn't like the characters that much in SDRA2(sorry to it's fans) mainly because of it's Void concept which is unique but failed in gathering sympathy from me as a viewer. The Void was heavily inspired by UDGs Warriors of Hope which is made up of twisted children. The Another series surely didn't waste the opportunity and made each BDA and execution look darker than the orig which hooked a lot of Dangan fans to that fan game as well. But the only part where they came short is the writing of the trials and it's cases. Basically in SDRA2 chap 3 they literally had to make the blackened a superhuman almost comparable to Izuru in order to accomplish an almost perfect crime when this is not supposed to happen. Also the dialogues in each trial didn't help it's case when all it did was to make the trials longer in duration. These didn't have much purpose to the story not even for entertainment or tensity. Well, that's all I could say about this matter for now. I still have of things in my mind but I shouldn't make this comment too long.
Honestly speaking, I was shocked when I found this video in my recommendations, but I'm glad that there are people showing Fangan creators appreciation, even the ones who discontinued their projects. Creating content that falls under this category is an undertaking like no other. As a Fangan creator myself, I am aware of all the struggles that entail endeavors such as these, from recruiting talented teammate to stressing over small details due to a sense of perfectionism that I can't explain (if you know, you know), and when all these things pile up to the point where they become too much to bear it's difficult to stay motivated. I myself was forced to step away from my project for a time on an indefinite hiatus due to personal issues (and the COVID-19 pandemic certainly didn't help matters on that front), but a short while ago thanks to the continued support my project received from both the team I painstakingly assembled and the fans I garnered along the way along with the betterment of my livelihood thanks to a series of difficult but ultimately necessary decisions I've made in my private life, I found myself slowly but surely contributing to the project once again hopefully this time to it's completion. And even if I don't, I've been working with a group to create a game engine that will allow Unity using Fangan creators to create fangames more easily (we're calling it the DR: Editor) so not all my efforts will be in vain. All in all, to me, this video serves as a pointed reminder to stay positive and stay the course. Remember, even when you've hit rock bottom, the only place you can go from there is up.
Super danganronpa another 2 was literally better than the originals by far from the plot twists the deaths executions trials and just the characters personalities and plot overall lol amazing shit right there
Personally, I think that one of the things that can be done to up the quality of a fangan to official standards is to put more effort in the visual part to mimic the feel of the games a bit more. Don’t get me wrong, writing is the most important aspect in the end. I just think aesthetics are very important as well.
I totally agree with wanting the art style to look familiar, but I think one thing that gives a fangan identity is how unique their art styles can be. I really love sdar2 and Brave Danganronpa for drawing it’s characters with bold lines and muted color palettes to give their games a more authentic VN feel. But I also understand how cool it is to play something like Project Eden’s Garden, where it feels like you’re playing an authentic danganronpa game. Overall, aesthetics are a really important part of a fangan and should be given attention, whether or not they replicate the Dangan art style.
Another despair academy needs another one in the future, I am genuinely invested in that fangame and I can't help but think of it as if it's apart of the actual series. I want to see the journey of yuki in Sora's body trying to use his luck to help others while also trying to bring back sora since she was an A.I based off akane. That game has left an imprint on me, also had the most brutal deaths I've seen so far. I feel bad still for satsuka and hibiki. The endings having multiple was a nice touch too
Yeah I think they mentioned that the hard part was creating everything from scratch and from Ch. 1 onward, they don't need to create as much since they'll be reusing different things. But I guess it also depends on how much new content unfurls within each chapter, like any new locations, different char sprites, obviously stuff involving BDAs, executions, and more CGs (I hope we get some fun ones).
Not going to lie, I actually believe I am enjoying Project Eden's Garden over any official Danganronpa game. Damon is a very unique protagonist (kind of like if Hajime and Byakuya were inserted into one character). He doesn't feel the same as the previous protags, since all of them want to save the killing game while Damon is acting as if to trust no one which is a reasonable response. It also is a refresher from being inside a classroom (I mean sure it is still one), but the different looks stand out from the rest of the Danganronpa settings (even Goodbye Despair's). I don't wanna make assumptions yet, but I think the introduction of all the Eden's Lake Garden characters were the strongest yet out of any official game out there. It ties in to my first point, but the way it is going so headstrong to make all the characters feel unique from previous killing game's predecessors. Another example is comparing Cassidy to Chiaki. While Chiaki is a casual, collective gamer in terms of playing the games and her personality, while Cassidy acts so headstrong, and carefree.
Hm well I do think the fan games all do end up doing something interesting you can't find in the original. They have no restrictions, so they can literally be about anything and appeal to anyone. It's really just the fact that it's rare to see a fan game project done to its completion, so finding the motivation to check out incomplete stories is really low, especially when there's a good chance it'll end up canceled (which official games obviously don't have to worry about)
Yes some can be really well done. Best looking ones I've seen so far are Project Eden's Garden, Dead End and Kill/Cure(the latter both which seem to be in some sort of limbo for now, with no news on progress), they all are graphically so similar to the original games. Danganronpa Another and SDRA2 are good, and I also have enjoyed following Brave: Coward's Paradise, Shattered Hope, Despair Time and Antebellum, also Twisted Truths though it hasn't started yet. I've also read some fan fiction of Danganronpa that have IMO compared to the games. My favorite ones with original killing games and characters so far are: Fractured Fates (Remake) New Hope University: Major in Murder Village of Despair Behind Bars (Almost finished) Avenging Despair (Almost finished) Starting a new one soon. All of those are on Archive of Our Own, if anyones intrested.
I have a meme(spoilers): Eden's garden: *looks and works like a normal Danganronpa's game* Damganronpa Despair time: *adds some things to the worldbuilding* Danganronpa Another: *predicted the whole V3 before it got released so don't play it before you play v3 because you will get some spoilers*
Me before watching the videos: No...they are better. 😁 (Seriously, though, save for a few characters in parts of Danganronpa Another, the writing shows so much potential, and the stories are framed in a way every single character is likeable or at least creates intrigue (I'll admit though, it's not really fair to judge between the canon and the fanworks because these works were mainly created after the canon releases. In other words, of course they'll aim to be better than the originals.))
Would like to see a video like this on the Sonic, MegaMan, and Touhou franchises. Those are loaded with pretty aweasome fangames and romhacks, most of which hold up as well as the official games, and heck, my favorite Touhou game, Hollow Song of Birds, is a fangame.
DRA is so overshadowed compared to its sequel, it sucks honestly. Yes, the art aged a lot, but the story itself? I cried during Chapter 4 harder than in any canon Danganronpa game. And it's HARD to make me cry.
@@Justin-ul7fhSDRA2 is not Overrated. DRA is Underrated. There is a difference. SDRA2 deserves all the praise it gets. But DRA is not getting the praise it deserves.
The reason for this is during 2020 the Danganrona shine era SDRA2 was being translated and DRAs engine is very difficult to update since it's an Old RPG Maker (kind of the Vocalsynth u can only get in pages with 89348 malware) So it was pushed aside, if i'm not wrong DRA is currently being remade
I only got into this series months ago (like 7+ or less), and for me the fangames are much more existing and fun than the main one. Probably because DR2 and V3 stayed like a clone to DR in terms of how people die and how many each chapter, and no real change at the end. Eaden's Garden is my actual first DR-like game to play and it's looking SO GOOD, I didn't even played the main ones (except for DR2 for couple of minutes)
@@cherryzero I did watched them actually, even Ultra Despair Girls, explanation of DR Zero, and DR3's future side/hope side with some of despair side and the Nagito episode, so I am not completely blind on the plot. Imo SDRA2 and Eden's Garden are better than the actual games. We might not have enough if Eden's Garden yet but SDRA2 has such good, well thought out cases and i personally just can't get enough of it.
2:57 It's funny cuz this isn't even a Danganronpa character nor a Danganronpa OC, it's the main protagonist of Megami Ibunroku Persona. I've seen tons of fan arts like these of the Persona characters in Persona Q style online.
im currently working on a fan game and we have a team of maybe 20 i work with unity engine and c# scripts im very experienced and its probably gonna take multiple years to get multiple chapters out probably months to get even one chapter out
Danganronpa despair time is my favourite fangame honestly the story is absolutely amazing, the puzzles, the hints, evidence, everything. Not to mention how dedicated and hardworking the creators and fans are. Only "downside" I'd say is that its not a game but its not a personal downside for me since I prefer it in the video format.
Your so right about every fan game trying to have a Makoto rip-off. Also I find it ironic that you mention anti hero then show Kill/Cure were every character is evil lol. Good video though!
Every character in Kill/Cure is evil? You sure you didn't mistake it for Antebellum? I know that every Kill/Cure character is a Former Ultimate, but never heard a thing about the evil part.
@@valutakoshelok2879 Yeah they all are evil. There "motive" videos are making them NOT want to kill instead of killing everyone. Apparently in this game everyone has a reason to kill or what they originally went for
@@abridgedplane4417 Yes. Just like in normal Danganronpa with motive videos to get them a reason to kill. In Kill/Cure there "motive" videos are trying to stop them from killing
I think it all depends on how you look at it, sure the originals came first and obviously have a bigger budget and team to work with while the fan games are limited in that regard. Although I think the good fan games deserve credit where it's due, the original games have a bad habit of playing it safe and reusing too many ideas especially when it comes to the first game. The fan games on the other hand while inevitably borrowing ideas or plot points from the original they still end up taking the already established lore and expanding on it while doing their own thing. And while in the original they have many pointless and/or unlikable characters that too often don't contribute to the game, fan games like Danganronpa Another or SDRA2 have a better track record of having likable characters that actually contribute one way or another and aren't just a waste of space. ( The originals are great don't get me wrong but they feel WAY too safe, even a game like V3 that ended up taking one hell of a turn towards the end still ended up feeling like they were using a similar formula to the previous games.)
I hadn't watched the video just yet but going off the title alone , YES THEY CAN. honestly in my opinion Super Dangaronpa 2 did the troup better than original dangaronpa 🤷🏽♀️ . I think nowadays ppl saw what can work in a game like this and what cant.
@Henrique Velloso same. K is such a beast, I still sometimes get chills when I rewatch the frking trial 😭 ( I won't say their name cause i might spoil some peeps lol)
What about fanganronpas that instead of games, are video series? I made one years ago called "Almost Danganronpa" that started as a joke and with more videos, I put more effort into it, but only a small group of people ever watched it, I am proud of those 6 videos
hello i am making a fangan called Danganronpa Nexus It's currently in pre-production (the plan is in writing) this project is supposed to be a game so I need people who would be interested into joining my team (we are over 30 by now) I need help please apply thanks
People might come at me but I’m gonna be honest I think the fangans can still be good like Eden’s Garden but I still think they aren’t as good as the mains. I think people are just saying the writings are better than the main series because they’re more fresh to their experience since they’re not as well known and they aren’t popular enough to have their flaws pointed out, of course everyone can have opinions though and they obviously won’t be as good since they don’t have close to the budget. Here’s where people are gonna get mad I think SDRA2 isn’t good or well written and overrated. But yes dangans can still be pretty impressive and engaging and I’m hype for Eden’s content and some others whether it gets cancelled or not
SDRA2 imo is good but overrated. Other fangans I recognize their flaws but I think they're all very good. SDRA2 gets too much attention like it literally overshadowed it's predecessor, which I liked more. I like Another 2 I just think there's better fangans out there.
V3 had a much bigger team, which means more money for production, but the game would take more time to both finish, and play. Just speedrunning v3 would take about 7 hours at best, just skipping text and everything. I think with everyone's attention span decreasing due to tiktok and stuff, people would most definitely be inclined to start loving shorter but impactful series like Danganronpa another or just about any fangame!
@@cherryzero yeah, I aree with you. but personally, I love long stories too. I just think Another is better than V3 in every way. and it's not because it's shorter and impactful, even the characters, the plot is better in my opinion.
eden's garden - The best fanronpa I have ever seen. no, there were other quite good ronpas, but THIS ?? I got out of the "ronpa fanatic" phase and now I honestly don't even like danganronpa anymore. but the garden of eden intrigued me a lot .. now I love this fanronpa more than the original, lmao in this project, I felt fresh air, there are no directly absolutely useless characters, no terribly strange characters in appearance (hifumi, teruteru Will there be fanservice? sexualization of minors in the original.. ugh i know i'm a bore
They have thousands of times less expectations, so yes they'll seem better but no Fanganronpa even comes close to the quality, detail or enjoyability of a Spike Chunsoft Release
The another series is masterpiece levels of story characters plot, plot twists and trials along with the deaths and executions am sorry but it shits on the original games in terms of enboyability that's for sure lol
DRA needs a translation fitting of its status cause the one we have is so awful and hardly functions as a translation. It literally gets worse as the game continues and alot of content isnt even translated. But besides that i firmly and STRONGLY hold that DRA1&2 are better than the canon games, and im sure thatll be a controversial take but i just find that they executed every idea from the canon better while also having its own unique ideas.
It’s not. I do and always will prefer the original. Although Eden’s Garden is a nice touch I must say. The only tragic thing preventing me from playing it any further is that trash talking protag who doesn’t shut up and has to always be so sassy. I hate him! If only they made him less annoying in a way and selfish I would have liked to play more..
@@xN0XvRVLEZx So you’re gonna call me out for having my own opinion? You’re the one who need to sit down. I said “Eden’s Garden is a nice touch” that doesn’t mean I hated it.
after seeing them? Definitely not tbh. It's inspiring that they were motivated to create, but none of them really live up to Danganronpa unless you're talking exclusively about Danganronpa 1. They tend to have that indie game feel where the quality isn't quite up there with the official Danganronpa content. I feel as though asking this question gives way to *alot* of sentimental bias where people *want* to say/believe that any old fangame is as good as the official Danganronpa, but you have to realize that Danganronpa got it's popularity for a *reason*. Even just looking objectively at player statistics and notoriety, it's not really much of a contest. Some people fell off of Danganronpa and might see the fan games as better as a result, and others just like the idea of supporting individual, smaller creators and might let that cloud their judgement. I'm seeing a lot of that in the comments. While I don't want to belittle the effort and undeniable good quality that comes with some fan games, I also don't think it's fair to not recognize what Danganronpa (the original) has done.
Have you even played Suprr Danganronpa Another 2? Every Single thing about it surpasses the actual Second Game, whether it be writing quality, foreshadowing, the cases themselves, the deaths, the presentation, the executions, everything. The characters are simply better written. The worst SDRA2 character can often outshine half of the mainline characters. Sure the quality, no, the budget may not be there at all compared to a AAA game like the OG. But even if I cant stand for any other fangame and hell, even the first game of the another series, in just the first three chapters SDRA2 surpassed all of the mainline games in every aspect possible. Main thing is it took the tropes DR series made. And not only twisted them, but wrote them just better.
@antagonisticalex401 I think it says alot that you can't really elaborate much beyond "it's better" despite admitting that the quality isn't there. All of the danganronpa games have significant foreshadowing and the tropes are correlating for a reason that leaves them in speculation to this day, such as weather the third murder is always a suicide or the murder of a burly, bigger figure. There's way more nuance to the original danganronpa that makes the cast feel like an actual cast as opposed to a bunch of OCs in a room. That's what most other danganronpa fan games lack.
Quite frankly from all the fan series I've seen the only one that has character designs that actually fit the originals is Shattered Hope on youtube. But a lot of the characters are obnoxious
I rank some fangames (DRA duo and Eden's Garden) alongside the main games. That is, near the top. And then there's Hyper H20, below everything. Yes, even below Despair Arc.
Well probably. I mean the originals have TONS of problems so the fans take those problems and fix them and add they spin on It. That it, nothing to deep for me
Depends. SDRA2 sucks, but DRA, Despair Time and Eden's Garden are already amazing to me because they take themselves seriously with current cohesion, coherence and a sense of understanding how social bonds work in high intensity situations, as well as developing characters far beyond the scope of reality. Take Tsurugi, who I believe is one of the best characters written, period. He resembles a Shakespearean nightmare and it absolutely carried the whole of dra for me. It was Yuki's story, and while that concept was interesting enough, we cannot deny that it was all Tsurugi's game. And his imposing presence coming in at the same time as his depressing and growing vulnerability/dependencies was pure fucking class to me, way better than a lot of characters in canon.
@@valutakoshelok2879 Because it is a joke of a game with too many plot twists and forced sci-fi contrivances with characters who either have no synergy or forced synergy for plot. They also ruined Rei and Tsurugi's integrity as characters and made them wildly inconsistent to their original counterparts. The beauty of danganronpa for me lies in picking apart potential relationships and offhand interactions that solidify a character's development. Notably, in dra, Kinji and Haruhiko impacted Tsurugi drastically without ever being close with him. Same can be said for Yuki. But in A2, closeness is forced between Tsurugi and Yuki when their closeness in the first gave was the alliance of outsiders. (Eg. seen in Never Let Me Go, where outsider solidarity was explored wonderfully) A2 is even aware of this when Mikado asks if Tsurugi is married to Yuki, which just ruined things for me. As well as this, I can't think of any unforced relationships in A2 with a few interactions that help drive character motivations. Also, designs are less memorable, Void was built up to be fucking nothing, Teruya died needlessly, and all of the cast are pretty bland to me. A1 is always going to be the peak fangame to me.
The biggest crime SDRA2 did is making the masterminds look underwhelming because of a certain character(that died in ch.3) which was shown to be more evil and seems to be one who's more deserving of the Ultimate Despair title. For me, one of the golden rules in Danganronpa games is to make the mastermind/masterminds the most evil out of all the characters in the story. SDRA2 failed big time.
"Are danganronpa fangames better then the actual games?" Some of them arent but a fair bit of them Ive seen are just as good or even better then the later danganronpa games
One note, when you said 50-100 people are needed for a project like this... Man, more than a hundred people is already considered a GIANT development team. Half Life 2 was made by 82 people and it would fit neatly into that range. You don't need more than 20 people for a fan game.
to be fair, it seems that most fangame projects have the following types of staff attached to it: 1 project leader 1 character artist 1-3 ish writers 1 background artist 1 UI artist 16 to 20 ish Voice Actors for any characters involved. 1 coder or video editor. (or more it really depends). 1 or more artist for the soundtracks. so at barest minimum we are just 23+ people involved in set project. Other then that it also complicates things when those types of people all have their own life and schedules and it being a fanproject it is unpaid volunteer work.. and it just wouldn't surprise that most fangans, especiall good or high quality ones get into a development hell.
No. Lots of them have cringe writing, whether it's the korean overly violent for the sake of violence and everyone is a psychopath somehow, or others that have dialogue written by teens/manchilds with insults every 2 seconds and every character having to be peculiary dark behind their masks
It's honestly so nice that the edans garden team is planning on making the games engine open for future fangames
I wonder how user friendly it is though. Hopefully it's not too hard to use!

Good Luck with the Game guys
Hola, que me puedes decir sobre el proyecto Eden Garden? Me interesa muchísimo

Despair time is amazing. It has one of the best protagonists I’ve ever seen.
Yeah antibellum is super rough in its first chapter but it’s improvements are wild. I mean I still think that it’s a bit fast paced and the writing revolves a bit too much around characters trauma dumping instead of actually building proper relationships. However it has a really unique vibe to it and the character designs are so good that I’m honestly content to overlook a lot of the flaws which will hopefully improve as time moves forward
i thought project edens garden was official for a long time 💀
Lol

The Best Fangan taking all aspects into account in my opinion has to be another 2 rn. It had some of the best plot twists I've seen. Period. Holy hell chapters 4 or even we can say 3 onwards it became it's own thing entirely, and so far nothing has come close to it for me. The promising ones that can compete sdra2 when theyre finished are Eden's Garden, Shattered Hope, (He)Artless Deceit etc.
Idiot nothing can compete sdra2
i believe **some** fanganronpas are better imo, no matter how long or short they are, most (edens garden, shattered hope, despair time) all caught my attention fast and left me wanting more while the canon dr games were kind of dry
however this doesn’t mean i don’t like the canon dr games , but most fangans were much more entertaining to me
I feel like it's also because fans can take the critique made towards the original games and use them to help better write their own fangans.
@@DiiDiiCakezz yes, exactly!! especially with the characters, i notice some fangans have much more intriguing or realistic characters than the canon games which i enjoy
The factor that hooked me tbh was the fact we got a trial with the whole cast. That fact alone sold me lol
@@MINNOWBER yes! i love how we got to have a better taste of all the characters before any of them die
It's crazy because if it really takes 6+ years, then most of the fans will be adults by then.
tbh i like edens garden the most or super danganronpa too
Idk, nothing can really beat the originals for me. However, I need to watch a few to form some opinions.

They deserve to be at more equal popularity; they both equally stand out from the rest for their own reasons
I think Danganronpa: Heartless Deceit is another fangan I'm going to absolutely love when it releases, the storytelling in the trailers alone is incredible. Would suggest anyone reading this to check it out. It's worth your time.
I just prefer "actual games" if that makes sense. These video format games are whatever to me.
Writing seems good though!
Writing being better than canon is questionable but ig I understand since I’m not really sure what makes certain writing better than others
I HAVEN'T WATCHED THE VIDEO! I SHOULD SOON! But Shattered Hope was my first fangan to get into, and I LOVE IT SO MUCH!
Danganronpa spoilers are everywhere lol!
“if it’s too long winded..people are gonna get bored” The 7 hour prologue in DANGANRONPA 3 is insane 😭😭
I don't really play fangames but Eden's garden was really good, still for me nothing beats the original
thanks finally i found someone who have different opinion ,same here too.

I feel like the only noteworthy ones so far are Eden's garden danganronpa another
Despair time and shattered hope are also good
Eden Garden and super Dangropa another two are the best behind games ever they should be canon because like both are so good they should work together
Sdra2 imo is my fav and I’d say it’s way better than Og danganronpa
Another despair academy needs another one in the future, I am genuinely invested in that fangame and I can't help but think of it as if it's apart of the actual series. I want to see the journey of yuki in Sora's body trying to use his luck to help others while also trying to bring back sora since she was an A.I based off akane. That game has left an imprint on me, also had the most brutal deaths I've seen so far. I feel bad still for satsuka and hibiki. The endings having multiple was a nice touch too
Edens garden is planning on one chapter a year. Which makes sense because of DREditor making it really easy
Hi CherryZero I love this and I hope you have a good day and you are awesome
Thank you very much! I hope you have a wonderful day as well.
Holy sheet you used persona 2 music?! Never thought I'd hear Shiori's theme in a video essay. Hell yeah persona 2 representation
My favorite ones with original killing games and characters so far are:
Fractured Fates (Remake)
New Hope University: Major in Murder
Village of Despair
Behind Bars (Almost finished)
Avenging Despair (Almost finished)
Starting a new one soon. All of those are on Archive of Our Own, if anyones intrested.
I have a meme(spoilers):
Eden's garden: *looks and works like a normal Danganronpa's game*
Damganronpa Despair time: *adds some things to the worldbuilding*
Danganronpa Another: *predicted the whole V3 before it got released so don't play it before you play v3 because you will get some spoilers*
Me before watching the videos: No...they are better. 😁
(Seriously, though, save for a few characters in parts of Danganronpa Another, the writing shows so much potential, and the stories are framed in a way every single character is likeable or at least creates intrigue (I'll admit though, it's not really fair to judge between the canon and the fanworks because these works were mainly created after the canon releases. In other words, of course they'll aim to be better than the originals.))
I love Project: Edens Garden so much.
Finally someone who prefers Dra to Sdra2 🙏 🙏 (well both of them are good tho)
SDRA2 is good but overrated and it gets too much attention. BUT ANOTHER 1 IS FUCKING GREAT
@@Justin-ul7fhSDRA2 is not Overrated. DRA is Underrated. There is a difference. SDRA2 deserves all the praise it gets. But DRA is not getting the praise it deserves.
The reason for this is during 2020 the Danganrona shine era SDRA2 was being translated and DRAs engine is very difficult to update since it's an Old RPG Maker (kind of the Vocalsynth u can only get in pages with 89348 malware)
So it was pushed aside, if i'm not wrong DRA is currently being remade
I only got into this series months ago (like 7+ or less), and for me the fangames are much more existing and fun than the main one. Probably because DR2 and V3 stayed like a clone to DR in terms of how people die and how many each chapter, and no real change at the end.
Eaden's Garden is my actual first DR-like game to play and it's looking SO GOOD, I didn't even played the main ones (except for DR2 for couple of minutes)
DR2 Prologue is long af. The main games are really interesting to play, I highly recommend it if you have the time!
@@cherryzero I did watched them actually, even Ultra Despair Girls, explanation of DR Zero, and DR3's future side/hope side with some of despair side and the Nagito episode, so I am not completely blind on the plot.
I know this comment want long enough, but I actually did this recently as my first try, in case you don't mind and have the time to check, I hope you like it:
ua-cam.com/video/DpMEimvE07k/v-deo.html
It's taken from a video from Kyoko and Kaede's VA channel
Imo SDRA2 and Eden's Garden are better than the actual games. We might not have enough if Eden's Garden yet but SDRA2 has such good, well thought out cases and i personally just can't get enough of it.
The situation really reminds me of Undertale AU's.
One series in which fangames be better than the original ones, is the Five Nights at Freddy's one, no doubt
pokemon hack roms too
There are some super good Sonic fangames out there too!
Gotta love fangame content..encourage creativity and still give credit to the original..legit good

It's funny cuz this isn't even a Danganronpa character nor a Danganronpa OC, it's the main protagonist of Megami Ibunroku Persona.
I've seen tons of fan arts like these of the Persona characters in Persona Q style online.
That was a just a little joke I put in! lmao
@@cherryzero
Lol I see-
The Ultimate Speed Demon thing got me confused too for a second 😅
im currently working on a fan game and we have a team of maybe 20 i work with unity engine and c# scripts im very experienced and its probably gonna take multiple years to get multiple chapters out probably months to get even one chapter out
Danganronpa despair time is my favourite fangame
honestly the story is absolutely amazing, the puzzles, the hints, evidence, everything.
Wait, every character in Kill/Cure is evil?
@@pastelantlers7479 thanks. Now that I think about it, I think I heard this some time ago. Completely forgot about this point.
Who's the character on the left side of the thumbnail, what his talent might be?
The another series is top tier and Eden’s garden is right up there I think fan games can be just as good depending how n the care put into it
I honestly prefer dra and sdra2 more than v3 and thh, characterwise. ToT
And story wise as well. Though a few parts may feel lackluster for some, at least Linuj managed to pull off well written endings unlike v3 lmao
@Henrique Velloso same. K is such a beast, I still sometimes get chills when I rewatch the frking trial 😭 ( I won't say their name cause i might spoil some peeps lol)
My sister literally a fan of all of these Danganronpa fangame, but only watch the gameplay
I’m surprised penguinronpa and cartoons in danganropa weren’t mentioned
The bar is very low so usually yeah.
danganronpa V3 ending mention about we have too much fan game of danganronpa and Retired author
What about fanganronpas that instead of games, are video series? I made one years ago called "Almost Danganronpa" that started as a joke and with more videos, I put more effort into it, but only a small group of people ever watched it, I am proud of those 6 videos
hello
i am making a fangan called Danganronpa Nexus
It's currently in pre-production (the plan is in writing)
this project is supposed to be a game
so I need people who would be interested into joining my team (we are over 30 by now)
I need help
please apply
thanks
Sdra2 is a fangame I’d argue is better than the games in the actual series
I have been summoned
I personally love Danganronpa Another series more than V3. The story is much more deep and I even cried playing it. V3 however... not so good...
V3 is dogshit yeah
Danganronpa Rebirth 😭😭😭
I love opening up a video and getting the reply to the main question right away.
EDENS GARDEN IS AMAZINGGGG
What game is the character on the left in the title card from? Or is it an OC commission for a UA-camr?
400th sub!!
eden's garden - The best fanronpa I have ever seen. no, there were other quite good ronpas, but THIS ??
I got out of the "ronpa fanatic" phase and now I honestly don't even like danganronpa anymore. but the garden of eden intrigued me a lot .. now I love this fanronpa more than the original, lmao
in this project, I felt fresh air, there are no directly absolutely useless characters, no terribly strange characters in appearance (hifumi, teruteru
Will there be fanservice? sexualization of minors in the original.. ugh
i know i'm a bore
Yes!
hahahahahaha athanks for letting me know
!)
ANTEBELLUM SHOUTOUT
They have thousands of times less expectations, so yes they'll seem better but no Fanganronpa even comes close to the quality, detail or enjoyability of a Spike Chunsoft Release
The another series is masterpiece levels of story characters plot, plot twists and trials along with the deaths and executions am sorry but it shits on the original games in terms of enboyability that's for sure lol
@sheol8989 hm I agree and glad I found someone who says something refreshing.
Bro has NOT played the Another Series 💀
DRA needs a translation fitting of its status cause the one we have is so awful and hardly functions as a translation. It literally gets worse as the game continues and alot of content isnt even translated.
But besides that i firmly and STRONGLY hold that DRA1&2 are better than the canon games, and im sure thatll be a controversial take but i just find that they executed every idea from the canon better while also having its own unique ideas.
I personally would say edens garden is close to danganronpa with danganronpa
Bro he’s a fictional character, calm down and support the devs pls
@@xN0XvRVLEZx So you’re gonna call me out for having my own opinion? You’re the one who need to sit down. I said “Eden’s Garden is a nice touch” that doesn’t mean I hated it.
@@mike_morton_simp3080 Yea but you're whining over a fictional boy in a video game being mean, like you must be really sensitive if that gets to you.
@@mike_morton_simp3080 It's a nice change from a perfect hero protagonist
To be fair that was only the prologue. It is obvious he'll (hopefully) get more development as time goes on.
after seeing them?
@viennasavage9110 You really captured my thoughts perfectly and expressed them so clearly!
friggin love renpy
Quite frankly from all the fan series I've seen the only one that has character designs that actually fit the originals is Shattered Hope on youtube. But a lot of the characters are obnoxious
I rank some fangames (DRA duo and Eden's Garden) alongside the main games. That is, near the top.
And then there's Hyper H20, below everything. Yes, even below Despair Arc.
Yes. Sda2 is flawless
Danganronpa official walks so SDRA2 can run.
What name this Danganronpa 0:52 pls
Danganrebirth (sorry I got it wrong last time)
W video
Well probably. I mean the originals have TONS of problems so the fans take those problems and fix them and add they spin on It. That it, nothing to deep for me
“Are the fan games good?”
Me : No, not at all.
Just my opinion pls don’t cancel me
Oh why do you feel that way?
If you don't mind, what exactly made you dislike SDRA2?
I'm gonna have to disagree with the first part lmao, but you're right about dra (and Tsurugi) being phenomenal.
@@darkmoney7762 Actually, there are like 4 characters who are more morally defunct than the masterMID
Tsurugi, Syobai, Kanade and Kokoro
"Are danganronpa fangames better then the actual games?"
Some of them arent but a fair bit of them Ive seen are just as good or even better then the later danganronpa games
I never played any of them
One note, when you said 50-100 people are needed for a project like this... Man, more than a hundred people is already considered a GIANT development team.
Half Life 2 was made by 82 people and it would fit neatly into that range.
You don't need more than 20 people for a fan game.
to be fair, it seems that most fangame projects have the following types of staff attached to it:
1 project leader
1 character artist
1-3 ish writers
1 background artist
1 UI artist
16 to 20 ish Voice Actors for any characters involved.
Ok does anyone know the fangame around 00:38
Danganronpa Deadication
No. Lots of them have cringe writing, whether it's the korean overly violent for the sake of violence and everyone is a psychopath somehow, or others that have dialogue written by teens/manchilds with insults every 2 seconds and every character having to be peculiary dark behind their masks
Go and read Danganronpa Yakuza Arc and thank me later.
I'll check it out some time!
While i feel like fangana are pretty much overrated i dont think any of them beats out the original, the dra series is pretty good
