Wikipedia says that Hans Christian Andersen wrote the original little mermaid in 1837 so I think you're spot on for those dresses.

I appreciate how you don't bash a film because the costumes aren't " historically accurate". It drives me crazy when historians, bash a historical film, or a " kid's movie" that is pure fantasy. like you said the animaters took inspiration from a little bit of everything. I'm a HUGE history buff, as well as a lover of movies. I don't sit there and bash a historical film no matter if the actual fashion sense is off. I like a movie for its entertainment, and the story it tells, not if a sleeve of a gown is not from the actual time period it's supposed to be in. So again, thank you for not bashing the little mermaid for its many different molds. lol🧜‍♀💗💗

Agreed, the key phrase is "kids movie" and "fantasy movie". Imagination is used in the old fairy tales, something that makes the stories wonderful.

Also, these older princess movies were completely hand drawn. No animation team is going to be tasked with depicting an actual historically accurate princess dress. Those things are way too detailed and complex.
Also, it's Disney. The dresses are intentionally left vague to encapsulate a feeling of timelessness, as the girls aren't tied down to one specific and obvious time period

I can't help but wish you'd discussed Vanessa's dresses too, since she's the other one with a couple of different fits. I know the white slip is basically just a slip and less to say about that, but still

I don't think that blue dress is very pretty, but truthfully I never thought cartoons had to be historically accurate? However, I think movies should be because movies often are supposed to be set in a particular time in history.
